Giovanni 4

Una donna con cinque mariti.

1 Molte persone preferivano andare da Gesù, piuttosto che da Giovanni per farsi battezzare, e diventavano poi suoi seguaci,2 benché non fosse Gesù a battezzare, ma i discepoli.3 Quando Gesù venne a sapere che i Farisei erano al corrente della cosa, partì dalla Giudea per ritornare in Galilea.4 Durante il viaggio, doveva attraversare la Samaria.5-6 Verso mezzogiorno, giunto al villaggio di Sicar, si fermò al pozzo di Giacobbe, situato sul pezzo di terra che Giacobbe diede a suo figlio Giuseppe. Gesù era stanco per il lungo cammino e si sedette sull’orlo del pozzo.7 Poco dopo, venne a prendere l’acqua una donna samaritana. Gesù le disse: « Dammi da bere ».8 In quel momento era solo, perché i discepoli erano andati al villaggio a comprare qualcosa da mangiare.9 La samaritana rispose sorpresa: « Come mai tu, Giudeo, chiedi da bere a me, che sono samaritana? » Di solito, infatti, i Giudei non rivolgevano nemmeno la parola ai Samaritani.10 Gesù rispose: « Se tu sapessi che dono meraviglioso ha Dio per te e chi sono io, saresti tu a chiedermi dell’acqua, ed io ti darei dell’acqua viva! »11 « Ma tu non hai né corda, né secchio », osservò la donna, « e il pozzo è profondo. Da dove prenderesti, dunque, quest’acqua viva?12 E poi, sei forse più potente di Giacobbe, il nostro antenato? Come puoi darci dell’acqua migliore di questa, che ci ha dato lui, da cui lui stesso ha bevuto con i suoi figli e il suo bestiame? »13 Gesù rispose: « Chi beve quest’acqua, avrà sete di nuovo; chi invece berrà l’acqua che gli darò io, non avrà mai più sete, per sempre.14 Anzi, l’acqua che gli darò, diventerà in lui una sorgente, da cui sgorga vita eterna ».15 « Ti prego, Signore », disse la donna, « dammi quest’acqua! Così non avrò più sete e non dovrò più tornare qui a prenderne ogni giorno! »16 « Vai a chiamare tuo marito », le disse Gesù.17-18 « Ma io non sono sposata », rispose la donna. « È vero », confermò Gesù. « Hai avuto cinque mariti e non sei sposata neppure con l’uomo con cui vivi ora ».19-20 « Signore », esclamò la donna, « tu devi essere un profeta! Allora, spiegami: perché voi Giudei insistete nel dire che l’unico posto per adorare Dio è Gerusalemme; mentre noi Samaritani sosteniamo invece che sia qui (sul monte Garizim), dove adoravano Dio i nostri antenati? ».21-24 « È venuto il tempo, donna, in cui non ci preoccuperemo più se adorare Dio qui o a Gerusalemme. Perché l’importante non è dove noi adoriamo, ma come adoriamo. È spirituale e reale la nostra adorazione? Abbiamo l’aiuto dello Spirito Santo? Perché Dio è spirito, e chi lo adora deve lasciarsi guidare dallo Spirito di Dio per adorarlo nel modo giusto. È questo che Dio vuole da noi. Ma voi Samaritani sapete ben poco di lui, adorate ciò che non conoscete, mentre noi Giudei lo conosciamo, perché la salvezza viene al mondo per mezzo dei Giudei ».25 La donna osservò: « Beh, almeno so che verrà il Messia, quello che chiamano Cristo e, quando verrà, ci insegnerà tutto! »26 Allora Gesù le disse: « Sono io il Messia! »27 In quel momento arrivarono i discepoli e rimasero sorpresi di trovarlo a parlare con una donna, ma nessuno di loro gli chiese perché, o di che cosa stessero parlando.28-29 La donna, intanto, lasciata la brocca, si era precipitata al villaggio, dove diceva a tutti: « Venite a vedere, c’è un uomo, che mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto! Che sia lui il Messia? »30 La gente allora venne dal villaggio per vederlo.31 Nel frattempo, i discepoli insistevano perché Gesù mangiasse.32 « No », rispose Gesù, « io ho dei cibo, che voi non conoscete ».33 « Chi glielo avrà mai portato? » si chiedevano i discepoli.34 Allora Gesù spiegò loro: « Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di Dio che mi ha mandato; e completare la sua opera.35 Voi pensate che la mietitura non comincerà prima dell’estate, fra quattro mesi, non è vero? Ebbene, guardatevi intorno! Veri e propri campi di anime sono già pronti per la mietitura.36 I mietitori ricevono la giusta paga per raccogliere le anime immortali per il cielo! Che soddisfazione per chi semina e per chi miete!37 In questo caso è proprio vero che uno semina e qualcun altro raccoglie!38 Vi ho mandato a mietere dove altri avevano faticato a seminare; avete raccolto i frutti della fatica di altri, che hanno lavorato prima di voi ».39 Molti abitanti di quel villaggio della Samaria credettero che Gesù era il Messia, grazie alle parole della donna samaritana che raccontava: « Quell’uomo ha saputo dirmi tutto ciò che ho fatto! »40 I Samaritani dunque andarono da Gesù e lo pregarono di rimanere nel loro villaggio. Ed egli accettò di restare per due giorni.41 Bastò quel breve periodo, perché molti altri credessero in lui, dopo averlo ascoltato.42 E dicevano alla donna: « Ora crediamo, non solo per il tuo racconto, ma perché lo abbiamo sentito con le nostre orecchie! Sappiamo che egli è davvero il Salvatore del mondo! »43-44 Dopo essersi fermato quei due giorni, Gesù ripartì per la Galilea. Egli era solito dire: « Un profeta è onorato ovunque, eccetto nel proprio paese! »45 Ma i Galilei lo accolsero a braccia aperte, perché erano stati a Gerusalemme per la festa della Pasqua ed avevano visto alcuni dei suoi miracoli.

Guarigione del figlio dell’ufficiale.

46-47 Durante il viaggio attraverso la Galilea, Gesù giunse di nuovo nella città di Cana, la stessa in cui aveva trasformato l’acqua in vino. Mentre si trovava là, un ufficiale governativo di Cafarnao, che aveva un figlio molto ammalato, venne a sapere che Gesù era tornato dalla Giudea. Lo andò a cercare, e lo pregò di seguirlo a Cafarnao, per guarire suo figlio moribondo.48 Gesù gli disse: « Possibile che se non faccio miracoli nessuno mi crede? »49 L’ufficiale supplicò: « Signore, vieni subito, prima che il bambino muoia! »50 Allora Gesù gli disse: « Torna a casa. Tuo figlio è guarito! » L’uomo gli credette e si avviò verso casa.51 Mentre era per strada, alcuni suoi servi gli andarono incontro per comunicargli che tutto andava per il meglio: suo figlio era guarito.52 Allora il padre chiese a che ora il ragazzo avesse cominciato a sentirsi meglio; gli risposero: « Ieri pomeriggio, verso l’una, la febbre è scomparsa improvvisamente! »53 Così il padre constatò che tutto era accaduto nello stesso momento in cui Gesù aveva detto: « Tuo figlio è guarito ». E l’ufficiale, con tutta la sua famiglia, credette che Gesù era il Messia.54 Questo fu il secondo miracolo di Gesù in Galilea, dopo il suo arrivo dalla Giudea.

1 When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John2 (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples),3 he left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.4 And he must needs pass through Samaria.5 So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph:6 and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.8 For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.9 The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)10 Jesus answered and said unto unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou that living water?12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Every one that drinketh of this water shall thirst again:14 but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life.15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come all the way hither to draw.16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.17 The woman answered and said unto him, I have no husband. Jesus saith unto her, Thou saidst well, I have no husband:18 for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly.19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father.22 Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers.24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth.25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.27 And upon this came his disciples; and they marvelled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why speakest thou with her?28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the people,29 Come, see a man, who told me all things that ever I did: can this be the Christ?30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him.31 In the mean while the disciples prayed him, saying, Rabbi, eat.32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not.33 The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat?34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest.36 He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.37 For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye have not labored: others have labored, and ye are entered into their labor.39 And from that city many of the Samaritans believed on him because of the word of the woman, who testified, He told me all things that ever I did.40 So when the Samaritans came unto him, they besought him to abide with them: and he abode there two days.41 And many more believed because of his word;42 and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.43 And after the two days he went forth from thence into Galilee.44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country.45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.46 He came therefore again unto Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.48 Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way.51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived.52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to amend. They said therefore unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judaea into Galilee.
