Jésus nourrit cinq mille hommes

Mt 14.13-21 ; Mc 6.30-44 ; Lc 9.10-17

1  tAprès cela, Jésus s’en alla sur l’autre rive de la mer de Galilée, la mer de Tibériade. 2 tUne grande foule le suivait, parce qu’elle voyait les signes qu’il produisait sur les malades. 3 tJésus monta sur la montagne ; là, il s’assit avec ses disciples.

4 tOr la Pâque, la fête des Juifs, était proche.
5  tJésus leva les yeux et vit qu’une grande foule venait à lui ; il dit à Philippe : Où achèterons-nous des pains pour que ces gens aient à manger ? 6 tIl disait cela pour le mettre à l’épreuve, car il savait, lui, ce qu’il allait faire. 7 tPhilippe lui répondit : Deux cents deniers de pains ne suffiraient pas pour que chacun en reçoive un peu. 8 tUn de ses disciples, André, frère de Simon Pierre, lui dit : 9 tIl y a ici un jeune garçon qui a cinq pains d’orge et deux poissons ; mais qu’est-ce que cela pour tant de gens ? 10 Jésus dit : Faites installer ces gens. – Il y avait beaucoup d’herbe en ce lieu. – Ils s’installèrent donc, au nombre d’environ cinq mille hommes. 11 tJésus prit les pains, rendit grâce et les distribua à ceux qui étaient là ; il fit de même pour les poissons, autant qu’ils en voulurent. 12 tLorsqu’ils furent rassasiés, il dit à ses disciples : Ramassez les morceaux qui restent, pour que rien ne se perde.

13 tIls les ramassèrent donc ; ils remplirent douze paniers avec les morceaux des cinq pains d’orge qui restaient à ceux qui avaient mangé.

14  tA la vue du signe qu’il avait produit, les gens disaient : C’est vraiment lui, le Prophète qui vient dans le monde.

15  tJésus, sachant qu’ils allaient venir s’emparer de lui pour le faire roi, se retira de nouveau sur la montagne, seul.

Jésus marche sur la mer

16  tLe soir venu, ses disciples descendirent jusqu’à la mer. 17 tIls montèrent dans un bateau pour se rendre à Capharnaüm, sur l’autre rive de la mer. Les ténèbres étaient déjà là, et Jésus n’était pas encore venu à eux. 18 tUn vent violent soufflait et la mer se soulevait. 19 tAprès avoir ramé environ vingt-cinq ou trente stades, ils aperçoivent Jésus qui marche sur la mer et s’approche du bateau ; ils eurent peur. 20 tMais il leur dit : C’est moi, n’ayez pas peur !

21 tIls voulaient donc le prendre dans le bateau ; aussitôt le bateau toucha la terre, là où ils allaient.

22  tLe lendemain, la foule qui était restée sur l’autre rive de la mer vit qu’il n’y avait eu là qu’une seule barque et que Jésus n’était pas monté en bateau avec ses disciples, mais que ses disciples étaient partis seuls. 23 tCependant d’autres barques vinrent de Tibériade, près du lieu où ils avaient mangé le pain, après que le Seigneur eut rendu grâce. 24 tQuand la foule vit que ni Jésus, ni ses disciples n’étaient là, les gens montèrent eux-mêmes dans ces barques et vinrent à Capharnaüm, à la recherche de Jésus.

25 Ils le trouvèrent sur l’autre rive de la mer et lui dirent :Rabbi, quand es-tu arrivé ici ?
26  tJésus leur répondit :Amen, amen, je vous le dis, vous me cherchez, non parce que vous avez vu des signes, mais parce que vous avez mangé des pains et que vous avez été rassasiés. 27 tŒuvrez, non pas en vue de la nourriture qui se perd, mais en vue de la nourriture qui demeure pour la vie éternelle, celle que le Fils de l’homme vous donnera ; car c’est lui que le Père – Dieu – a marqué de son sceau. 28 tIls lui dirent : Que devons-nous faire pour accomplir les œuvres de Dieu ?

29 tJésus leur répondit : L’œuvre de Dieu, c’est que vous mettiez votre foi en celui qu’il a lui-même envoyé.
30  tIls lui dirent alors : Quel signe produis-tu donc, toi, pour que nous voyions et que nous te croyions ? Quelle œuvre fais-tu ? 31 tNos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, selon ce qui est écrit :Il leur donna à manger du pain venu du ciel. 32 tJésus leur dit :Amen, amen, je vous le dis, ce n’est pas Moïse qui vous a donné le pain du ciel, c’est mon Père qui vous donne le vrai pain du ciel ; 33 car le pain de Dieu, c’est celui qui descend du ciel pour donner la vie au monde. 34 tIls lui dirent : Seigneur, donne-nous toujours ce pain-là.

35 tJésus leur dit : C’est moi qui suis le pain de la vie. Celui qui vient à moi n’aura jamais faim, et celui qui met sa foi en moi n’aura jamais soif.
36  tMais je vous l’ai dit : Vous m’avez vu, et vous ne croyez pas. 37 tTout ce que le Père me donne viendra à moi ; et celui qui vient à moi, je ne le chasserai jamais dehors ; 38 tcar je suis descendu du ciel pour faire, non pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé. 39 tOr, la volonté de celui qui m’a envoyé, c’est que je ne perde rien de tout ce qu’il m’a donné, mais que je le relève au dernier jour.

40 tLa volonté de mon Père, en effet, c’est que quiconque voit le Fils et met sa foi en lui ait la vie éternelle ; et moi, je le relèverai au dernier jour.
41  tLes Juifs maugréaient à son sujet, parce qu’il avait dit : C’est moi qui suis le pain descendu du ciel.

42 tIls disaient : N’est-ce pas Jésus, le fils de Joseph, dont nous, nous connaissons le père et la mère ? Comment peut-il dire maintenant : « Je suis descendu du ciel ! »
43  tJésus leur répondit : Ne maugréez pas entre vous. 44 tPersonne ne peut venir à moi si le Père qui m’a envoyé ne l’attire ; et moi, je le relèverai au dernier jour. 45 tIl est écrit dans les Prophètes : Ils seronttous instruits de Dieu. Quiconque a entendu le Père et reçu son enseignement vient à moi.

46 tNon pas que quelqu’un ait vu le Père, sinon celui qui est issu de Dieu ; lui a vu le Père.
47  t Amen, amen, je vous le dis, celui qui croit a la vie éternelle. 48 tC’est moi qui suis le pain de la vie. 49 tVos pères ont mangé la manne dans le désert, et ils sont morts. 50 tLe pain que voici, c’est celui qui descend du ciel, pour que celui qui en mange ne meure pas.

51 tC’est moi qui suis le pain vivant descendu du ciel. Si quelqu’un mange de ce pain, il vivra pour toujours ; et le pain que, moi, je donnerai, c’est ma chair, pour la vie du monde.

52 Les Juifs se querellaient entre eux ; ils disaient : Comment celui-ci peut-il nous donner sa chair à manger ?
53  tJésus leur dit :Amen, amen, je vous le dis, si vous ne mangez pas la chair du Fils de l’homme et si vous ne buvez pas son sang, vous n’avez pas de vie en vous. 54 tCelui qui mange ma chair et qui boit mon sang a la vie éternelle, et moi, je le relèverai au dernier jour. 55 tCar ma chair est vraie nourriture, et mon sang est vraie boisson. 56 tCelui qui mange ma chair et boit mon sang demeure en moi, comme moi en lui. 57 tComme le Père, qui est vivant, m’a envoyé, et comme moi, je vis par le Père, ainsi celui qui me mange vivra par moi.

58 tVoici le pain descendu du ciel. Il n’est pas comme celui qu’ont mangé les pères : ils sont morts. Celui qui mange ce pain vivra pour toujours.

59  tVoilà ce qu’il dit alors qu’il enseignait dans la synagogue, à Capharnaüm.

Des paroles de vie éternelle


60  tAprès l’avoir entendu, beaucoup de ses disciples dirent : Cette parole est dure ; qui peut l’entendre ? 61 tJésus, sachant que ses disciples maugréaient à ce sujet, leur dit : Est-ce là pour vous une cause de chute ? 62 tEt si vous voyiez le Fils de l’homme monter où il était auparavant ? 63 tC’est l’Esprit qui fait vivre. La chair ne sert de rien. Les paroles que, moi, je vous ai dites sont Esprit et sont vie. 64 tMais il en est parmi vous quelques-uns qui ne croient pas. Car Jésus savait depuis le commencement qui étaient ceux qui ne croyaient pas et qui était celui qui le livrerait.

65 tEt il disait : C’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que personne ne peut venir à moi, si cela ne lui est donné par le Père.

66  tDès lors, beaucoup de ses disciples s’en retournèrent ; ils ne marchaient plus avec lui.

67  tJésus dit donc aux Douze : Et vous, voulez-vous aussi vous en aller ? 68 tSimon Pierre lui répondit : Seigneur, à qui irions-nous ? Tu as des paroles de vie éternelle. 69 tNous, nous sommes convaincus, nous savons que c’est toi qui es le Saint de Dieu. 70 tJésus leur répondit : N’est-ce pas moi qui vous ai choisis, vous, les Douze ? Pourtant l’un de vous est un diable ! 71 tIl parlait de Judas, fils de Simon Iscariote ; car c’était lui qui allait le livrer, lui, l’un des Douze !

John 6

1 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.2 And a great multitude followed him, because they beheld the signs which he did on them that were sick.3 And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.4 Now the passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.5 Jesus therefore lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great multitude cometh unto him, saith unto Philip, Whence are we to buy bread, that these may eat?6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.7 Philip answered him, Two hundred shillings’ worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little.8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him,9 There is a lad here, who hath five barley loaves, and two fishes: but what are these among so many?10 Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.11 Jesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would.12 And when they were filled, he saith unto his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which remain over, that nothing be lost.13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which remained over unto them that had eaten.14 When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, This is of a truth the prophet that cometh into the world.15 Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.16 And when evening came, his disciples went down unto the sea;17 and they entered into a boat, and were going over the sea unto Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.18 And the sea was rising by reason of a great wind that blew.19 When therefore they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the boat: and they were afraid.20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.21 They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat: and straightway the boat was at the land whither they were going.22 On the morrow the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save one, and that Jesus entered not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples went away alone23 (howbeit there came boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks):24 when the multitude therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they themselves got into the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.25 And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled.27 Work not for the food which perisheth, but for the food which abideth unto eternal life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him the Father, even God, hath sealed.28 They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God?29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.30 They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou?31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.32 Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, It was not Moses that gave you the bread out of heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread out of heaven.33 For the bread of God is that which cometh down out of heaven, and giveth life unto the world.34 They said therefore unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.35 Jesus said unto them. I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.36 But I said unto you, that ye have seen me, and yet believe not.37 All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.38 For I am come down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.39 And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all that which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.40 For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.41 The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, I am the bread which came down out of heaven.42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how doth he now say, I am come down out of heaven?43 Jesus answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.44 No man can come to me, except the Father that sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day.45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me.46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he that is from God, he hath seen the Father.47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath eternal life.48 I am the bread of life.49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.50 This is the bread which cometh down out of heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.52 The Jews therefore strove one with another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?53 Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves.54 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day.55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.56 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him.57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me.58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread shall live for ever.59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?61 But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said unto them, Doth this cause you to stumble?62 What then if ye should behold the Son of man ascending where he was before?63 It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life.64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.65 And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father.66 Upon this many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.67 Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.69 And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God.70 Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil?71 Now he spake of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.
