Mat åt fem tusen
1 Sedan for Jesus över till andra sidan av Galileiska sjön, eller Tiberiassjön. 2 Mycket folk följde efter, därför att de såg de tecken han gjorde genom att bota de sjuka. 3 Och Jesus gick upp på berget och satte sig där med sina lärjungar.
4 Det var strax före judarnas påskhögtid.
5 När Jesus lyfte blicken och såg att så mycket folk var på väg till honom sade han till Filippos: ”Var skall vi köpa bröd så att alla dessa får något att äta?” 6 Det sade han för att pröva Filippos, själv visste han vad han skulle göra. 7 Filippos svarade: ”Det räcker inte med bröd för tvåhundra denarer, om de skall få en bit var.” 8 En av lärjungarna, Simon Petrus bror Andreas, sade: 9 ”Här är en pojke som har fem kornbröd och två fiskar. 10 Men vad förslår det till så många?” Jesus sade: ”Låt folket slå sig ner.” Det var gott om gräs på den platsen. Och de slog sig ner — det var omkring fem tusen män. 11 Jesus tog brödet, tackade Gud och delade ut åt dem som låg där, och likaså av fiskarna så mycket de ville ha. 12 När de hade ätit sig mätta sade han till lärjungarna: ”Samla ihop bitarna som har blivit över, så att ingenting förfars.”
13 De samlade ihop dem och fyllde tolv korgar med de bitar av de fem kornbröden som hade blivit över när de ätit.
14 Då människorna såg vilket tecken han hade gjort sade de: ”Detta måste vara Profeten som skall komma hit till världen.”
15 Men Jesus, som förstod att de tänkte tvinga honom med sig för att göra honom till kung, drog sig undan till berget igen, i ensamhet.Jesus går på vattnet
16 När det hade blivit kväll gick hans lärjungar ner till sjön 17 och steg i en båt för att ta sig över till Kafarnaum på andra sidan. Det var redan mörkt, och Jesus hade ännu inte kommit tillbaka. 18 Det blåste hårt och vågorna gick höga. 19 När de hade rott en halvmil fick de se Jesus komma gående på sjön och närma sig båten. De blev rädda, 20 men han sade till dem: ”Det är jag, var inte rädda.”
21 Då ville de ta med honom i båten, och med ens var den framme vid stranden dit de var på väg.Livets bröd
22 Nästa dag upptäckte folkmassan, som var kvar på andra sidan sjön, att det bara hade funnits en enda båt där och att Jesus inte hade följt med sina lärjungar i den utan att de hade gett sig av ensamma. 23 Men det kom andra båtar från Tiberias och lade till nära platsen där man hade ätit brödet, det som Herren hade läst tacksägelsen över. 24 När folket nu upptäckte att Jesus inte var där och inte heller hans lärjungar steg de i båtarna och for över till Kafarnaum för att leta efter Jesus. 25 De fann honom där på andra sidan sjön och frågade honom: ”Rabbi, när kom du hit?” 26 Jesus svarade: ”Sannerligen, jag säger er: ni söker inte efter mig därför att ni har fått se tecken utan därför att ni åt av bröden och blev mätta. 27 Arbeta inte för den föda som är förgänglig utan för den föda som består och skänker evigt liv och som Människosonen skall ge er. Ty på honom har Fadern, Gud själv, satt sitt sigill.” 28 De frågade då: ”Vad skall vi göra för att utföra Guds verk?” 29 Jesus svarade: ”Detta är Guds verk: att ni tror på honom som han har sänt.” 30 De sade: ”Vilket tecken vill du göra, så att vi kan se det och tro på dig? Vad kan du utföra? 31 Våra fäder åt mannat i öknen, så som det står skrivet: Han gav dem bröd från himlen att äta. ” 32 Jesus svarade: ”Sannerligen, jag säger er: Mose gav er inte brödet från himlen, men min fader ger er det sanna brödet från himlen.
33 Guds bröd är det bröd som kommer ner från himlen och ger världen liv.”
34 De bad honom då: ”Herre, ge oss alltid det brödet.” 35 Jesus svarade: ”Jag är livets bröd. Den som kommer till mig skall aldrig hungra, och den som tror på mig skall aldrig någonsin törsta. 36 Men som jag har sagt er: ni har sett mig och tror ändå inte. 37 Alla som Fadern ger mig skall komma till mig, och den som kommer till mig skall jag inte visa bort. 38 Ty jag har inte kommit ner från himlen för att göra vad jag själv vill utan för att göra hans vilja som har sänt mig. 39 Och detta är hans vilja som har sänt mig: att jag inte skall låta någon gå förlorad av dem som han har gett mig utan låta dem uppstå på den sista dagen.
40 Ty detta är min faders vilja: att alla som ser Sonen och tror på honom skall ha evigt liv. Och jag skall låta dem uppstå på den sista dagen.”
41 Judarna förargade sig över att han hade sagt: ”Jag är brödet som har kommit ner från himlen”, 42 och de sade: ”Är det inte Jesus, Josefs son? Vi känner ju hans far och mor. Hur kan han då säga att han har kommit ner från himlen?” 43 Jesus svarade: ”Var inte förargade. 44 Ingen kan komma till mig utan att Fadern som har sänt mig drar honom, och jag skall låta honom uppstå på den sista dagen. 45 Det står skrivet hos profeterna: Alla skall bli Guds lärjungar. Var och en som har lyssnat till Fadern och lärt av honom kommer till mig. 46 Men ingen har sett Fadern, utom den som har kommit från Gud; han har sett Fadern. 47 Sannerligen, jag säger er: den som tror har evigt liv. 48 Jag är livets bröd. 49 Era fäder åt mannat i öknen och de dog. 50 Men brödet som kommer ner från himlen är sådant att den som äter av det inte skall dö.
51 Jag är det levande brödet, som har kommit ner från himlen. Den som äter av det brödet skall leva i evighet. Brödet jag skall ge är mitt kött, jag ger det för att världen skall leva.”
52 Judarna började då tvista med varandra om hur han kunde ge dem sitt kött att äta. 53 Jesus svarade: ”Sannerligen, jag säger er: om ni inte äter Människosonens kött och dricker hans blod äger ni inte livet. 54 Den som äter mitt kött och dricker mitt blod har evigt liv, och jag skall låta honom uppstå på den sista dagen. 55 Ty mitt kött är verklig föda, och mitt blod är verklig dryck. 56 Den som äter mitt kött och dricker mitt blod förblir i mig och jag i honom. 57 Liksom den levande Fadern har sänt mig och jag lever genom Fadern, skall också den som äter mig leva genom mig. 58 Detta är brödet som har kommit ner från himlen, ett annat bröd än det som fäderna åt. De dog, men den som äter detta bröd skall leva i evighet.”
59 Detta sade han när han undervisade i synagogan i Kafarnaum.Lärjungarna förargar sig över Jesu ord
60 Många av hans lärjungar som hörde honom tala sade: ”Det är outhärdligt, det han säger. Vem står ut med att höra på honom?” 61 Jesus, som genast förstod att lärjungarna förargade sig över hans ord, sade till dem: ”Får det här er att vackla? 62 Hur blir det då om ni får se Människosonen stiga upp dit där han var förut? 63 Det är anden som ger liv, köttet är till ingen hjälp. De ord jag har talat till er är ande och liv. 64 Men det är några av er som inte tror.” Jesus visste ju från början vilka som inte trodde och vem som skulle förråda honom.
65 Och han fortsatte: ”Det var därför jag sade er att ingen kan komma till mig om han inte får det som gåva av Fadern.”
66 Då drog sig många av hans lärjungar tillbaka och ville inte längre följa med honom. 67 Jesus sade till de tolv: ”Inte vill väl ni också gå er väg?” 68 Simon Petrus svarade: ”Herre, till vem skulle vi gå? Du har det eviga livets ord, 69 och vi tror och vi förstår att du är Guds helige.” 70 Jesus sade: ”Har jag inte själv valt ut er tolv? Och ändå är en av er en djävul.” 71 Han menade Judas, Simon Iskariots son, ty denne skulle förråda honom, och han var en av de tolv.

Feeding Five Thousand
(Matthew 14.13-21; Mark 6.30-44; Luke 9.10-17)
1 Jesus crossed Lake Galilee, which was also known as Lake Tiberias. 2 A large crowd had seen him work miracles to heal the sick, and those people went with him.
3-4 It was almost time for the Jewish festival of Passover, and Jesus went up on a mountain with his disciples and sat down.t
5 When Jesus saw the large crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, “Where will we get enough food to feed all these people?”
6 He said this to test Philip, since he already knew what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered, “Don't you know that it would take almost a year's wagest just to buy only a little bread for each of these people?”
8 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the disciples. He spoke up and said,
9 “There is a boy here who has five small loavest of barley bread and two fish. But what good is that with all these people?”
10 The ground was covered with grass, and Jesus told his disciples to tell everyone to sit down. About 5,000 men were in the crowd.
11 Jesus took the bread in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he passed the bread to the people, and he did the same with the fish, until everyone had plenty to eat.
12 The people ate all they wanted, and Jesus told his disciples to gather up the leftovers, so that nothing would be wasted.
13 The disciples gathered them up and filled twelve large baskets with what was left over from the five barley loaves.
14 After the people had seen Jesus work this miracle, t they began saying, “This must be the Prophett who is to come into the world!”
15 Jesus realized that they would try to force him to be their king. So he went up on a mountain, where he could be alone.Jesus Walks on the Water
(Matthew 14.22-27; Mark 6.45-52)
16 That evening, Jesus' disciples went down to the lake. 17 They got into a boat and started across for Capernaum. Later that evening Jesus had still not come to them,
18 and a strong wind was making the water rough.
19 When the disciples had rowed for five or six kilometers , they saw Jesus walking on the water. He kept coming closer to the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said, “I am Jesus!t Don't be afraid!”
21 The disciples wanted to take him into the boat, but suddenly the boat reached the shore where they were headed.The Bread That Gives Life
22 The people who had stayed on the east side of the lake knew that only one boat had been there. They also knew that Jesus had not left in it with his disciples. But the next day 23 some boats from Tiberias sailed near the place where the crowd had eaten the bread for which the Lord had given thanks. 24 They saw that Jesus and his disciples had left. Then they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
25 They found him on the west side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that you are not looking for me because you saw the miracles, t but because you ate all the food you wanted.
27 t Don't work for food that spoils. Work for food that gives eternal life. The Son of Man will give you this food, because God the Father has given him the right to do so.”
28 “What exactly does God want us to do?” the people asked.
29 Jesus answered, “God wants you to have faith in the one he sent.”
30 They replied, “What miracle will you work, so that we can have faith in you? What will you do?
31 t For example, when our ancestors were in the desert, they were given mannat to eat. It happened just as the Scriptures say, ‘God gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jesus then told them, “I tell you for certain that Moses wasn't the one who gave you bread from heaven. My Father is the one who gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 And the bread that God gives is the one who came down from heaven to give life to the world.”
34 The people said, “Sir, give us this bread and don't ever stop!”
35 Jesus replied:
I am the bread that gives life! No one who comes to me will ever be hungry. No one who has faith in me will ever be thirsty. 36 I have told you already that you have seen me and still do not have faith in me.
37 Everything and everyone that the Father has given me will come to me, and I won't turn any of them away.
38 I didn't come from heaven to do what I want! I came to do what the Father wants me to do. He sent me, 39 and he wants to make certain that none of the ones he has given me will be lost. Instead, he wants me to raise them to life on the last day.t
40 My Father wants everyone who sees the Son to have faith in him and to have eternal life. Then I will raise them to life on the last day.
41 The people started grumbling because Jesus had said he was the bread that had come down from heaven.
42 They were asking each other, “Isn't he Jesus, the son of Joseph? Don't we know his father and mother? How can he say that he has come down from heaven?”
43 Jesus told them:
Stop grumbling! 44 No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me makes them want to come. But if they do come, I will raise them to life on the last day.
45 t One of the prophets wrote, “God will teach all of them.” And so everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him will come to me.
46 The only one who has seen the Father is the one who has come from him. No one else has ever seen the Father.
47 I tell you for certain that everyone who has faith in me has eternal life.
48 I am the bread that gives life! 49 Your ancestors ate mannat in the desert, and later they died. 50 But the bread from heaven has come down, so that no one who eats it will ever die.
51 I am that bread from heaven! Everyone who eats it will live forever. My flesh is the life-giving bread I give to the people of this world.
52 They started arguing with each other and asked, “How can he give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Jesus answered:
I tell you for certain that you won't live unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man. 54 But if you do eat my flesh and drink my blood, you will have eternal life, and I will raise you to life on the last day. 55 My flesh is the true food, and my blood is the true drink.
56 If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you are one with me, and I am one with you.
57 The living Father sent me, and I have life because of him. Now everyone who eats my flesh will live because of me.
58 The bread that comes down from heaven isn't like what your ancestors ate. They died, but whoever eats this bread will live forever.
59 Jesus was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum when he said these things.The Words of Eternal Life
60 Many of Jesus' disciples heard him and said, “This is too hard for anyone to understand.”
61 Jesus knew that his disciples were grumbling. So he asked, “Does this bother you? 62 What if you should see the Son of Man go up to heaven where he came from? 63 t The Spirit is the one who gives life! Human strength can do nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are from that life-giving Spirit.
64 But some of you refuse to have faith in me.” Jesus said this, because from the beginning he knew who would have faith in him. He also knew which one would betray him.
65 Then Jesus said, “You cannot come to me, unless the Father makes you want to come. That is why I have told these things to all of you.”
66 Because of what Jesus said, many of his disciples turned their backs on him and stopped following him. 67 Jesus then asked his twelve disciples if they also were going to leave him. 68 t Simon Peter answered, “Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life.
69 We have faith in you, and we are sure that you are God's Holy One.”
70 Jesus told his disciples, “I chose all twelve of you, but one of you is a demon!” 71 Jesus was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.t He would later betray Jesus, even though he was one of the twelve disciples.
