Jesus ger mat åt mer än 5 000 personer

1 Sedan for Jesus över till andra sidan av Galileiska sjön, som också kallas Tiberiassjön.2 En stor folkmassa följde efter honom vart han än gick, för de hade sett honom bota de sjuka.3 Och Jesus gick upp på ett berg och satte sig där med sina efterföljare.

4 Det var dagarna före påskt, judarnas stora högtid.
5 När Jesus såg sig omkring och märkte att så mycket folk hade följt efter honom, vände han sig till Filippos och sa: "Filippos, var kan vi köpa bröd så att alla dessa människor får något att äta?"

6 Detta sa han för att testa Filippos, för själv visste han exakt vad han skulle göra.

7 Filippos svarade: "Det skulle kosta en förmögenhett och ändå skulle de inte bli mätta."
8 En annan av hans efterföljare, Andreas, bror till Simon Petrus, sa då:

9 "Det finns en pojke här som har fem kornbröd och två fiskar. Men det räcker ju inte åt så många människor."
10 Då sa Jesus: "Säg åt alla att sätta sig ner." Det växte mycket gräs där, och allihop slog sig ner. Det var omkring 5 000 män där, förutom kvinnor och barn.

11 Sedan tog Jesus bröden och tackade Gud och delade ut dem till folket, och han gav dem av fiskarna så mycket som de ville ha.
12 När alla hade ätit sig mätta, sa han till sina efterföljare: "Samla nu ihop det som har blivit över, så att inget förstörs."

13 Det fanns fem kornbröd från början, men när de samlade ihop alla bitar som var över efter måltiden, blev det tolv fulla korgar!
14 Då det gick upp för folket vilket stort under som hade inträffat ropade de: "Han måste vara profetent som Gud skulle sända till världen med sitt budskap!"

15 Men när Jesus förstod att de tänkte tvinga honom att följa med, så att de kunde göra honom till kung över Israel, drog han sig undan i ensamhet högre upp bland bergen.

Jesus går på vattnet

16 På kvällen gick hans efterföljare ner till sjön och väntade på honom där.17 Men när det var helt mörkt och Jesus fortfarande inte hade kommit tillbaka, steg de i en båt för att åka över till Kafarnaum på andra sidan sjön.18 Det dröjde inte länge förrän det började blåsa kraftigt, och vågorna blev allt högre.19 När de hade rott ungefär en halvmil, fick de plötsligt se Jesus komma gående på vattnet och närma sig båten! De blev fruktansvärt rädda,20 men Jesus ropade till dem och sa: "Det är jag,t var inte rädda."

21 Då lät de honom komma upp i båten, och i samma stund var båten framme vid den plats dit de var på väg.

Jesus är brödet som ger evigt liv

22 Nästa morgon upptäckte folket, som var kvar på andra sidan sjön, att Jesus inte var där längre. De visste att det bara hade funnits en enda båt och att Jesus inte hade följt med sina efterföljare när de for därifrån.23 Men snart kom flera småbåtar från staden Tiberias och la till i närheten av den plats där Herren Jesus hade tackat Gud för brödet och alla hade ätit sig mätta.

24 Och eftersom folket såg att varken Jesus eller hans efterföljare var där, steg de i båtarna och for över sjön till Kafarnaum för att leta efter honom.

25 När de hittade honom på andra sidan sjön, frågade de: "Mästare, när kom du hit?"
26 Jesus svarade: "Jag ska säga er sanningen: ni kommer inte till mig därför att ni såg mig göra ett under, utan därför att jag gav er mat så att ni kunde äta er mätta.

27 Men sträva inte bara efter att få mat för dagen, utan sträva efter den mat som kan ge er evigt liv, den mat som jag, Människosonent, ska ge er. För Gud, Fadern, har sänt mig just för det här syftet."

28 Då frågade de: "Vad vill Gud att vi ska göra?"

29 Jesus svarade dem: "Gud vill att ni ska tro på den som han har sänt."
30 De svarade: "Du måste visa oss ett tecken om du vill att vi ska tro att Gud har sänt dig. Vad kan du göra för tecken?

31 Mose till exempel, han gav våra förfäder bröd varje dag när de vandrade genom öknen. Det står ju i Skriftent: 'Han gav dem bröd från himlen.t' "
32 Men Jesus svarade: "Jag försäkrar er att det inte var Mose som gav dem brödet, utan min Far i himlen. Och nu erbjuder han er det sanna brödet från himlen.

33 Det sanna brödet från Gud är det som har kommit ner från himlen och ger evigt liv åt människorna."

34 "Herre", sa de, "ge oss det brödet varje dag!"
35 Då svarade Jesus: "Jag är brödet som ger evigt liv. Den som kommer till mig ska aldrig mer bli hungrig. Och den som tror på mig ska aldrig mer bli törstig.36 Men precis som jag redan har sagt er, så tror ni inte på mig trots att ni har sett mig.37 Alla de människor som min Far i himlen ger mig, de kommer till mig, och jag ska aldrig visa bort dem.38 Jag har ju inte kommit ner från himlen för att göra min egen vilja utan för att göra hans vilja som har sänt mig.39 Och hans vilja är att jag inte ska förlora en enda av dem som han har gett mig, utan att jag ska uppväcka dem till evigt liv den dag Gud ska döma alla människor.

40 Ja, det är min Fars vilja att alla som ser Sonen och tror på honom ska ha evigt liv. Och jag ska uppväcka dem den dag Gud ska döma alla människor."

Folket retar sig på vad Jesus säger

41 Folket retade sig på att Jesus hade sagt: "Jag är brödet som har kommit ner från himlen."42 De sa: "Det är ju bara Jesus, Josefs son. Vi känner hans föräldrar. Hur kan han då påstå att han har kommit ner från himlen?"43 Men Jesus svarade: "Det är ingen idé att ni retar er på detta.44 Ingen kan komma till mig om inte min Far i himlen, han som har sänt mig, drar honom till mig. Men den som kommer till mig ska jag uppväcka till evigt liv den dag Gud ska döma alla människor.45 Gud lät profeten Jesaja skriva: 'De ska alla bli undervisade av Gud.'t Och den som lyssnar till min Far och lär av honom, han kommer till mig.

46 Men ingen har någonsin sett Fadern. Det är bara jag som har sett honom, eftersom jag har kommit från Gud.
47 Jag försäkrar er, att den som tror på mig har evigt liv!48 Jag är det bröd som ger liv.49 Era förfäder åt bröd i öknen, och de dog som alla andra.50 Men brödet som kommer ner från himlen gör så att den som äter av det inte dör.

51 Jag är det livgivande brödet som har kommit ner från himlen. Den som äter av det brödet kommer att leva i evighet. Och brödet jag ska ge er är min kropp. Jag ger den för att människorna ska få evigt liv."

52 Folket började då diskutera med varandra och säga: "Hur ska han kunna ge oss sin kropp att äta?"
53 Men Jesus sa om igen: "Jag försäkrar er, att om ni inte äter av min, Människosonenst, kropp och dricker av mitt blod, så kan ni inte få evigt liv.54 Den som äter av min kropp och dricker av mitt blod har evigt liv, och jag kommer att uppväcka honom den dag Gud ska döma alla människor.55 För min kropp är verklig mat, och mitt blod är verklig dryck.56 Den som äter av min kropp och dricker av mitt blod fortsätter att leva i gemenskap med mig och jag med honom.57 Min Far i himlen har sänt mig, och jag lever på grund av hans livgivande kraft. På samma sätt ska den som äter av mig få del av min livgivande kraft.58 Jag är brödet som har kommit ner från himlen. Det är inte likt det bröd som förfäderna åt, för de dog som alla andra. Men den som äter av mig, det sanna brödet, han ska leva i evighet."

59 Detta sa Jesus när han undervisade i synagogant i Kafarnaum.

Många av Jesus efterföljare lämnar honom

60 Till och med många av hans efterföljare som hörde honom, sa: "Nu går han för långt! Vem kan stå ut med att höra honom prata på det här viset?"
61 Men Jesus var väl medveten om att hans efterföljare retade sig på det han hade sagt, och därför sa han till dem: "Får det här er att tappa tron på mig?62 Vad ska ni då tänka när ni får se mig, Människosonent, återvända till himlen?63 Det är bara Guds Ande som kan ge evigt liv. Ingen människa kan åstadkomma något sådant. Och det jag nyss sa kommer från Guds Ande, därför ger det er liv.

64 Men det är några av er som inte tror på mig." Jesus visste ju från början vilka som inte trodde och vem den person var som skulle förråda honom.

65 Han fortsatte: "Det var därför jag sa att ingen kan komma till mig om inte min Far i himlen ger honom det som gåva."

66 När han hade sagt detta, drog sig många efterföljare bort från honom och ville inte längre ha med honom att göra.

67 Då vände sig Jesus till sina tolv närmaste efterföljare och frågade: "Tänker ni också ge er iväg?"
68 Men Simon Petrus svarade: "Herre, till vem skulle vi gå? Bara du har det budskap som ger evigt liv,

69 och vi tror och vet att du är Guds helige tjänare."
70 Då sa Jesus: "Jag har själv valt ut er tolv, och ändå är en av er en djävul."

71 Och den han syftade på var Judas, Simon Iskariots son, som senare skulle förråda honom, trots att han var en av Jesus tolv närmaste efterföljare.

John 6

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

1 After thist Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias).s2 A large crowd was following him because they were observing the miraculous signs he was performing on the sick.3 So Jesus went on up the mountainsides and sat down there with his disciples.4 (Now the Jewish feast of the Passovers was near.)s5 Then Jesus, when he looked upt and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so that these people may eat?”6 (Now Jesust said this to test him, for he knew what he was going to do.)s7 Philip replied,t “Two hundred silver coins wortht of bread would not be enough for them, for each one to get a little.”8 One of Jesus’ disciples,t Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,

9 “Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what goodt are these for so many people?”
10 Jesus said, “Havet the people sit down.” (Now there was a lot of grass in that place.)s So the ment sat down, about five thousand in number.11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed the bread to those who were seated. He then did the same with the fish,t as much as they wanted.12 When they were all satisfied, Jesust said to his disciples, “Gather up the broken pieces that are left over, so that nothing is wasted.”

13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loavess left over by the people who had eaten.
14 Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesust performed, they began to say to one another, “This is certainly the Prophetswho is to come into the world.”s

15 Then Jesus, because he knew they were going to come and seize him by force to make him king, withdrew again up the mountainside alone.s

Walking on Water

16 Now when evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,t17 got into a boat, and started to cross the laket to Capernaum.s (It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.)s18 By now a strong wind was blowing and the sea was getting rough.19 Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles,ts they caught sight of Jesus walking on the lake,t approaching the boat, and they were frightened.20 But he said to them, “It is I. Do not be afraid.”

21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land where they had been heading.
22 The next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the laket realized that only one small boatst had been there, and that Jesus had not boardedt it with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.23 But some boats from Tiberiass came to shoret near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.ss

24 So when the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boatst and came to Capernaums looking for Jesus.

Jesus’ Discourse About the Bread of Life

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake,t they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”s26 Jesus replied,t “I tell you the solemn truth,t you are looking for me not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate all the loaves of bread you wanted.t

27 Do not work for the food that disappears,ts but for the food that remains to eternal life – the foodt which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has put his seal of approval on him.”t
28 So then they said to him, “What must we do to accomplish the deedst God requires?”t29 Jesus replied,t “This is the deedt God requirest – to believe in the one whom het sent.”30 So they said to him, “Then what miraculous sign will you perform, so that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?

31 Our ancestorst ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”s
32 Then Jesus told them, “I tell you the solemn truth,t it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.33 For the bread of God is the one whot comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 So they said to him, “Sir,t give us this bread all the time!”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.ts36 But I told yout that you have seen mes and still do not believe.37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never send away.t38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.39 Now this is the will of the one who sent me – that I should not lose one person of every one he has given me, but raise them all upt at the last day.

40 For this is the will of my Father – for everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him to have eternal life, and I will raise him upt at the last day.”s
41 Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesust began complaining about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,”42 and they said, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”43 Jesus replied,t “Do not complain about me to one another.t44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him,ts and I will raise him up at the last day.45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’s Everyone who hears and learns from the Fathert comes to me.46 (Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God – het has seen the Father.)s47 I tell you the solemn truth,t the one who believess has eternal life.t48 I am the bread of life.t49 Your ancestorst ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.50 Thist is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a persont may eat from it and not die.

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The breadt that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesust began to argue with one another,t “How can this mant give us his flesh to eat?”53 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth,t unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,s you have no lifet in yourselves.54 The one who eatst my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.s55 For my flesh is truet food, and my blood is truet drink.56 The one who eatst my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me, and I in him.s57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who consumest me will live because of me.

58 Thist is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the bread your ancestorst ate, but then later died.t The one who eatst this bread will live forever.”

Many Followers Depart

59 Jesust said these things while he was teaching in the synagogues in Capernaum.s60 Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things,t said, “This is a difficultt saying!t Who can understand it?”t61 When Jesus was awaret that his disciples were complainingt about this, he said to them, “Does this cause you to be offended?ts62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?t63 The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help!t The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.t64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)s

65 So Jesus added,t “Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.”t

Peter’s Confession

66 After this many of his disciples quit following himt and did not accompany himt any longer.67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?”t68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.69 Wet have come to believe and to knows that you are the Holy One of God!”ss70 Jesus replied,t “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?”t

71 (Now he said this about Judas son of Simon Iscariot,s for Judas,t one of the twelve, was going to betray him.)s
