John 7
1 And after these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.2 Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works which thou doest.4 For no man doeth anything in secret, and himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.5 For even his brethren did not believe on him.6 Jesus therefore saith unto them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.8 Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.9 And having said these things unto them, he abode still in Galilee.10 But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?12 And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray.13 Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.14 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.15 The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?16 Jesus therefore answered them and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.17 If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from myself.18 He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you doeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me?20 The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I did one work, and ye all marvel because thereof.22 Moses hath given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man.23 If a man receiveth circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye wroth with me, because I made a man every whit whole on the sabbath?24 Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.25 Some therefore of them of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?26 And lo, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing unto him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ?27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.28 Jesus therefore cried in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.29 I know him; because I am from him, and he sent me.30 They sought therefore to take him: and no man laid his hand on him, because his hour was not yet come.31 But of the multitude many believed on him; and they said, When the Christ shall come, will he do more signs than those which this man hath done?32 The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to take him.33 Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while am I with you, and I go unto him that sent me.34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come.35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go that we shall not find him? will he go unto the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?36 What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.39 But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.40 Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet.41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee?42 Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?43 So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why did ye not bring him?46 The officers answered, Never a man so spake.47 The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray?48 Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?49 But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed.50 Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to him before, being one of them),51 Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
53 And they went every man unto his own house:
John 7
The Feast of Tabernacles
1 After thiss Jesus traveled throughout Galilee.t Het stayed out of Judeat because the Jewish leaderst wantedt to kill him.2 Now the Jewish feast of Tabernaclest was near.s3 So Jesus’ brothersts advised him, “Leave here and go to Judea so your disciples may see your miracles that you are performing.ts4 For no one who seeks to make a reputation for himselft does anything in secret.s If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”
5 (For not even his own brothers believed in him.)s
6 So Jesus replied,t “My timet has not yet arrived,t but you are ready at any opportunity!t7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I am testifying about it that its deeds are evil.8 You go ups to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feasts because my timet has not yet fully arrived.”t
9 When he had said this, he remained in Galilee.
10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then Jesust himself also went up, not openly but in secret.11 So the Jewish leaderst were looking for him at the feast, asking, “Where is he?”t12 There wast a lot of grumblingt about him among the crowds.t Some were saying, “He is a good man,” but others, “He deceives the common people.”t
13 However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jewish leaders.t
Teaching in the Temple
14 When the feast was half over, Jesus went up to the temple courtst and began to teach.t15 Then the Jewish leaderst were astonishedt and said, “How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?”ts16 So Jesus replied,t “My teaching is not from me, but from the one who sent me.t17 If anyone wants to do God’s will,t he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.t18 The person who speaks on his own authorityt desirest to receive honort for himself; the one who desirest the honort of the one who sent him is a man of integrity,t and there is no unrighteousness in him.
19 Hasn’t Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keepst the law! Why do you wantt to kill me?”
20 The crowdt answered, “You’re possessed by a demon!t Who is trying to kill you?”ts21 Jesus replied,t “I performed one miraclet and you are all amazed.s22 However, because Moses gave you the practice of circumcisiont (not that it came from Moses, but from the forefathers), you circumcise a male childt on the Sabbath.23 But if a male childt is circumcisedt on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken,s why are you angry with me because I made a man completely wellt on the Sabbath?
24 Do not judge according to external appearance,t but judge with propert judgment.”
Questions About Jesus’ Identity
25 Then some of the residents of Jerusalems began to say, “Isn’t this the mant they are tryingt to kill?26 Yet here he is, speaking publicly,t and they are saying nothing to him.s Do the rulers really know that this mant is the Christ?ts
27 But we know where this mant comes from.s Whenever the Christts comes, no one will know where he comes from.”s
28 Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts,t cried out,t “You both know me and know where I come from!s And I have not come on my own initiative,t but the one who sent met is true. You do not know him,t
29 butt I know him, because I have come from himt and het sent me.”
30 So then they tried to seize Jesus,ts but no one laid a hand on him, because his timet had not yet come.
31 Yet many of the crowdt believed in him and said, “Whenever the Christts comes, he won’t perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?”t
32 The Phariseess heard the crowdt murmuring these things about Jesus,t so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officerst to arrest him.t33 Then Jesus said, “I will be with you for only a little while longer,t and thent I am going to the one who sent me.
34 You will look for met but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come.”
35 Then the Jewish leaderst said to one another, “Where is het going to go that we cannot find him?t He is not going to go to the Jewish people disperseds among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?ts
36 What did he mean by saying,t ‘You will look for met but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come’?”
Teaching About the Spirit
37 On the last day of the feast, the greatest day,s Jesus stood up and shouted out,t “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and38 let the one who believes in me drink.t Just as the scripture says, ‘From within himtwill flow rivers of living water.’”s
39 (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given,t because Jesus was not yet glorified.)s
Differing Opinions About Jesus
40 When they heard these words, some of the crowdt began to say, “This reallyt is the Prophet!”s41 Others said, “This is the Christ!”ts But still others said, “No,t for the Christ doesn’t come from Galilee, does he?t42 Don’t the scriptures say that the Christ is a descendanttof Davids and comes from Bethlehem,ss the village where David lived?”t43 So there was a division in the crowdt because of Jesus.t
44 Some of them were wanting to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.s
Lack of Belief
45 Then the officerst returnedt to the chief priests and Pharisees,s who said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him back with you?”t46 The officers replied, “No one ever spoke like this man!”47 Then the Pharisees answered,t “You haven’t been deceived too, have you?t48 None of the rulerss or the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?t
49 But this rabblet who do not know the law are accursed!”
50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesust before and who was one of the rulers,t said,t51 “Our law doesn’t condemnt a man unless it first hears from him and learnst what he is doing, does it?”t
52 They replied,t “You aren’t from Galilee too, are you?t Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophetst comes from Galilee!”
53 ss And each one departed to his own house.
