Juan 8

1 Pero Jesús se dirigió al Monte de los Olivos,2 y al día siguiente, al amanecer, volvió al templo. La gente se le acercó, y él se sentó y comenzó a enseñarles.3 Los maestros de la ley y los fariseos llevaron entonces a una mujer, a la que habían sorprendido cometiendo adulterio. La pusieron en medio de todos los presentes,4 y dijeron a Jesús:
—Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en el acto mismo de cometer adulterio.5 En la ley, Moisés nos ordenó que se matara a pedradas a esta clase de mujeres. ¿Tú qué dices?6 Ellos preguntaron esto para ponerlo a prueba, y tener así de qué acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y comenzó a escribir en la tierra con el dedo.7 Luego, como seguían preguntándole, se enderezó y les dijo:
—Aquel de ustedes que no tenga pecado, que le tire la primera piedra.8 Y volvió a inclinarse y siguió escribiendo en la tierra.9 Al oír esto, uno tras otro comenzaron a irse, y los primeros en hacerlo fueron los más viejos. Cuando Jesús se encontró solo con la mujer, que se había quedado allí,10 se enderezó y le preguntó:
—Mujer, ¿dónde están? ¿Ninguno te ha condenado?11 Ella le contestó:
—Ninguno, Señor.
Jesús le dijo:
—Tampoco yo te condeno; ahora, vete y no vuelvas a pecar.]

Jesús, la luz del mundo

12 Jesús se dirigió otra vez a la gente, diciendo:
—Yo soy la luz del mundo; el que me sigue, tendrá la luz que le da vida, y nunca andará en la oscuridad.13 Los fariseos le dijeron:
—Tú estás dando testimonio a favor tuyo: ese testimonio no tiene valor.14 Jesús les contestó:
—Mi testimonio sí tiene valor, aunque lo dé yo mismo a mi favor. Pues yo sé de dónde vine y a dónde voy; en cambio, ustedes no lo saben.15 Ustedes juzgan según los criterios humanos. Yo no juzgo a nadie;16 pero si juzgo, mi juicio está de acuerdo con la verdad, porque no juzgo yo solo, sino que el Padre que me envió juzga conmigo.17 En la ley de ustedes está escrito que cuando dos testigos dicen lo mismo, su testimonio tiene valor.18 Pues bien, yo mismo soy un testigo a mi favor, y el Padre que me envió es el otro testigo.19 Le preguntaron:
—¿Dónde está tu padre?
Jesús les contestó:
—Ustedes no me conocen a mí, ni tampoco a mi Padre; si me conocieran a mí, también conocerían a mi Padre.20 Jesús dijo estas cosas mientras enseñaba en el templo, en el lugar donde estaban los cofres de las ofrendas. Pero nadie lo arrestó, porque todavía no había llegado su hora.

«A donde yo voy,//ustedes no pueden ir»

21 Jesús les volvió a decir:
—Yo me voy, y ustedes me van a buscar, pero morirán en su pecado. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir.22 Los judíos dijeron:
—¿Acaso estará pensando en matarse, y por eso dice que no podemos ir a donde él va?23 Jesús les dijo:
—Ustedes son de aquí abajo, pero yo soy de arriba; ustedes son de este mundo, pero yo no soy de este mundo.24 Por eso les dije que morirán en sus pecados; porque si no creen que Yo Soy, morirán en sus pecados.25 Entonces le preguntaron:
—¿Quién eres tú?
Jesús les respondió:
—En primer lugar, ¿por qué he de hablar con ustedes?26 Tengo mucho que decir y que juzgar de ustedes, pero el que me ha enviado dice la verdad, y lo que yo le digo al mundo es lo mismo que le he oído decir a él.27 Pero ellos no entendieron que les hablaba del Padre.28 Por eso les dijo:
—Cuando ustedes levanten en alto al Hijo del hombre, reconocerán que Yo Soy, y que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta; solamente digo lo que el Padre me ha enseñado.29 Porque el que me ha enviado está conmigo; mi Padre no me ha dejado solo, porque yo siempre hago lo que a él le agrada.30 Cuando Jesús dijo esto, muchos creyeron en él.

Los hijos de Dios y los esclavos//del pecado

31 Jesús les dijo a los judíos que habían creído en él:
—Si ustedes se mantienen fieles a mi palabra, serán de veras mis discípulos;32 conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.33 Ellos le contestaron:
—Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham, y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie; ¿cómo dices tú que seremos libres?34 Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que todos los que pecan son esclavos del pecado.35 Un esclavo no pertenece para siempre a la familia; pero un hijo sí pertenece para siempre a la familia.36 Así que, si el Hijo los hace libres, ustedes serán verdaderamente libres.37 Ya sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abraham; pero quieren matarme porque no aceptan mi palabra.38 Yo hablo de lo que el Padre me ha mostrado; así también ustedes, hagan lo que del Padre han escuchado.39 Ellos le dijeron:
—¡Nuestro padre es Abraham!
Pero Jesús les contestó:
—Si ustedes fueran de veras hijos de Abraham, harían lo que él hizo.40 Sin embargo, aunque les he dicho la verdad que Dios me ha enseñado, ustedes quieren matarme. ¡Abraham nunca hizo nada así!41 Ustedes hacen lo mismo que hace su padre.
Ellos le dijeron:
—¡Nosotros no somos hijos bastardos; tenemos un solo Padre, que es Dios!42 Jesús les contestó:
—Si de veras Dios fuera su padre, ustedes me amarían, porque yo vengo de Dios y aquí estoy. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que Dios me ha enviado.43 ¿Por qué no pueden entender ustedes mi mensaje? Pues simplemente porque no pueden escuchar mi palabra.44 El padre de ustedes es el diablo; ustedes le pertenecen, y tratan de hacer lo que él quiere. El diablo ha sido un asesino desde el principio. No se mantiene en la verdad, y nunca dice la verdad. Cuando dice mentiras, habla como lo que es; porque es mentiroso y es el padre de la mentira.45 Pero como yo digo la verdad, ustedes no me creen.46 ¿Quién de ustedes puede demostrar que yo tengo algún pecado? Y si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen?47 El que es de Dios, escucha las palabras de Dios; pero como ustedes no son de Dios, no quieren escuchar.

Cristo existe desde antes de Abraham

48 Los judíos le dijeron entonces:
—Tenemos razón cuando decimos que eres un samaritano y que tienes un demonio.49 Jesús les contestó:
—No tengo ningún demonio. Lo que hago es honrar a mi Padre; en cambio, ustedes me deshonran.50 Yo no busco mi gloria; hay alguien que la busca, y él es el que juzga.51 Les aseguro que quien hace caso de mi palabra, no morirá.52 Los judíos le contestaron:
—Ahora estamos seguros de que tienes un demonio. Abraham y todos los profetas murieron, y tú dices: “El que hace caso de mi palabra, no morirá.”53 ¿Acaso eres tú más que nuestro padre Abraham? Él murió, y los profetas también murieron. ¿Quién te has creído que eres?54 Jesús les contestó:
—Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo, mi gloria no vale nada. Pero el que me glorifica es mi Padre, el mismo que ustedes dicen que es su Dios.55 Pero ustedes no lo conocen. Yo sí lo conozco; y si dijera que no lo conozco, sería yo tan mentiroso como ustedes. Pero ciertamente lo conozco, y hago caso de su palabra.56 Abraham, el antepasado de ustedes, se alegró porque iba a ver mi día; y lo vio, y se llenó de gozo.57 Los judíos dijeron a Jesús:
—Todavía no tienes cincuenta años, ¿y dices que has visto a Abraham?58 Jesús les contestó:
—Les aseguro que yo existo desde antes que existiera Abraham.59 Entonces ellos tomaron piedras para arrojárselas; pero Jesús se escondió y salió del templo.

John 8

1 but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,4 they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?6 And this they said, trying him, that they might have whereof to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.8 And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.9 And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.10 And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.12 Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.16 Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.17 Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.18 I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.19 They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.20 These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.21 He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.22 The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.25 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.27 They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.28 Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.29 And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.30 As he spake these things, many believed on him.31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples;32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.35 And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.38 I speak the things which I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from your father.39 They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.41 Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.45 But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.46 Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?47 He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.48 The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?49 Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.50 But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.52 The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;55 and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.57 The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
