EVANGELO DI S. GIOVANNI 8

La donna adultera

1 E GESÙ se ne andò al monte degli Ulivit.

2 E in sul far del giorno, venne di nuovo nel tempio, e tutto il popolo venne a lui; ed egli, postosi a sedere, li ammaestravat.
3 Allora i Farisei, e gli Scribi, gli menarono una donna, ch'era stata colta in adulterio; e fattala star in piè ivi in mezzo, 4 dissero a Gesù: Maestro, questa donna è stata trovata in sul fatto, commettendo adulterio. 5 Or Mosè ci ha comandato nella legge, che cotali si lapidinot; tu adunque, che ne dici? 6 Or dicevano questo, tentandolo, per poterlo accusaret. Ma Gesù chinatosi in giù, scriveva col dito in terra. 7 E come essi continuavano a domandarlo, egli, rizzatosi, disse loro: Colui di voi ch'è senza peccato getti il primo la pietra contro a leit. 8 E chinatosi di nuovo in giù, scriveva in terra. 9 Ed essi, udito ciò, e convinti dalla coscienzat, ad uno ad uno se ne uscirono fuori, cominciando da'~più vecchi infino agli ultimi; e Gesù fu lasciato solo con la donna, che era ivi in mezzo. 10 E Gesù, rizzatosi, e non veggendo alcuno, se non la donna, le disse: Donna, ove sono que'~tuoi accusatori? niuno t'ha egli condannata?

11 Ed ella disse: Niuno, Signore. E Gesù le disse: Io ancora non ti condannot; vattene, e da ora innanzi non peccar piùt.

Discorso di Gesù sulla sua missione divina

12 E GESÙ di nuovo parlò loro, dicendo: Io son la luce del mondot; chi mi seguita non camminerà nelle tenebre, anzi avrà la luce della vita.
13 Laonde i Farisei gli dissero: Tu testimonii di te stesso; la tua testimonianza non è veracet. 14 Gesù rispose, e disse loro: Quantunque io testimonii di me stesso, pure è la mia testimonianza veracet; perciocchè io so onde io son venutot, ed ove io vo; ma voi non sapete nè onde io vengot, nè ove io vo. 15 Voi giudicate secondo la carnet; io non giudico alcunot. 16 E benchè io giudicassi, il mio giudicio sarebbe veracet, perciocchè io non son solot; anzi son io, e il Padre che mi ha mandato. 17 Or anche nella vostra legge è scritto, che la testimonianza di due uomini è veracet. 18 Io son quel che testimonio di me stesso; e il Padre ancora, che mi ha mandato, testimonia di met.

19 Laonde essi gli dissero: Ove è il Padre tuo? Gesù rispose: Voi non conoscete nè me, nè il Padre miot; se voi conosceste me, conoscereste ancora il Padre miot.

20 Questi ragionamenti tenne Gesù in quella parte, dov'era la cassa delle offerte, insegnando nel tempio; e niuno lo pigliò, perciocchè la sua ora non era ancora venuta.
21 Gesù adunque disse loro di nuovo: Io me ne vo, e voi mi cercheretet, e morrete nel vostro peccato; là ove io vo, voi non potete venire. 22 Laonde i Giudei dicevano: Ucciderà egli sè stesso, ch'egli dice: Dove io vo, voi non potete venire? 23 Ed egli disse loro: Voi siete da basso, io son da altot; voi siete di questo mondo, io non son di questo mondot.

24 Perciò vi ho detto che voi morrete ne'~vostri peccati, perciocchè, se voi non credete ch'io son desso, voi morrete ne'~vostri peccatit.
25 Laonde essi gli dissero: Tu chi sei? E Gesù disse loro: Io sono quel che vi dico dal principio. 26 Io ho molte cose a parlare, ed a giudicar di voi; ma colui che mi ha mandato è verace, e le cose che io ho udite da lui, quelle dico al mondot.

27 Essi non conobbero che parlava loro del Padre.
28 Gesù adunque disse loro: Quando voi avrete innalzato il Figliuol dell'uomot, allora conoscerete che io son dessot, e che non fo nulla da me stesso; ma che parlo queste cose, secondo che il Padre mi ha insegnatot.

29 E colui che mi ha mandato è mecot: il Padre non mi ha lasciato solo; poichè io del continuo fo le cose che gli piaccionot.

30 Mentre egli ragionava queste cose, molti credettero in luit.
31 E Gesù disse a'~Giudei che gli aveano creduto: Se voi perseverate nella mia parola, voi sarete veramente miei discepolit;

32 e conoscerete la veritàt, e la verità vi francheràt.
33 Essi gli risposero: Noi siam progenie d'Abrahamo, e non abbiam mai servito ad alcunot; come dici tu: Voi diverrete franchi? 34 Gesù rispose loro: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che chi fa il peccato è servo del peccatot. 35 Or il servo non dimora in perpetuo nella casa; il figliuolo vi dimora in perpetuot. 36 Se dunque il Figliuolo vi franca, voi sarete veramente franchit. 37 Io so che voi siete progenie d'Abrahamo; ma voi cercate d'uccidermit, perciocchè la mia parola non penetra in voi. 38 Io parlo ciò che ho veduto presso il Padre miot; e voi altresì fate le cose che avete vedute presso il padre vostro. 39 Essi risposero, e gli dissero: Il padre nostro è Abrahamot. Gesù disse loro: Se voi foste figliuoli d'Abrahamot, fareste le opere d'Abrahamo.

40 Ma ora voi cercate d'uccider me, uomo, che vi ho proposta la verità ch'io ho udita da Dio; ciò non fece già Abrahamo. Voi fate le opere del padre vostro.
41 Laonde essi gli dissero: Noi non siam nati di fornicazione; noi abbiamo un solo Padre, che è Iddiot. 42 E Gesù disse loro: Se Iddio fosse vostro Padre, voi mi amerestet; poichè io sono proceduto, e vengo da Diot; perciocchè io non son venuto da me stesso, anzi esso mi ha mandato. 43 Perchè non intendete voi il mio parlare? perchè voi non potete ascoltar la mia parola. 44 Voi siete dal diavolo, che è vostro padret; e volete fare i desideri del padre vostro; egli fu micidiale dal principiot, e non è stato fermo nella veritàt; poichè verità non è in lui; quando proferisce la menzogna, parla del suo proprio; perciocchè egli è mendace, e il padre della menzogna. 45 Ma, quant'è a me, perciocchè io dico la verità, voi non mi credete. 46 Chi di voi mi convince di peccatot? e se io dico verità, perchè non mi credete voi?

47 Chi è da Dio ascolta le parole di Diot; perciò, voi non l'ascoltate, perciocchè non siete da Dio.

48 Laonde i Giudei risposero, e gli dissero: Non diciamo noi bene che tu sei Samaritano, e che hai il demoniot?
49 Gesù rispose: Io non ho demonio, ma onoro il Padre mio, e voi mi disonorate. 50 Or io non cerco la mia gloriat; v'è chi la cerca, e ne giudica.

51 In verità, in verità, io vi dico che se alcuno guarda la mia parola, non vedrà giammai in eterno la mortet.
52 Laonde i Giudei gli dissero: Ora conosciamo che tu hai il demonio. Abrahamo, ed i profeti son morti; e tu dici: Se alcuno guarda la mia parola, egli non gusterà giammai in eterno la morte.

53 Sei tu maggiore del padre nostro Abrahamo, il quale è morto? i profeti ancora son morti; che fai te stesso?
54 Gesù rispose: Se io glorifico me stesso, la mia gloria non è nullat; v'è il Padre mio che mi glorificat, che voi dite essere vostro Dio. 55 E pur voi non l'avete conosciutot; ma io lo conoscot; e, se io dicessi che io non lo conosco, sarei mendace, simile a voi; ma io lo conosco, e guardo la sua parola.

56 Abrahamo, vostro padre, giubilando, desiderò di vedere il mio giornot, e lo vide, e se ne rallegrò.

57 I Giudei adunque gli dissero: Tu non hai ancora cinquant'anni, ed hai veduto Abrahamo?

58 Gesù disse loro: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che avanti che Abrahamo fosse nato, io sonot.
59 Essi adunque levarono delle pietre, per gettarle contro a lui; ma Gesù si nascose, ed uscì del tempio, essendo passato per mezzo loro; e così se ne andòt.

John 8

A Woman Caught in Adultery

1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.s2 Early in the morning he came to the temple courts again. All the people came to him, and he sat down and began to teacht them.3 The experts in the lawt and the Phariseess brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery. They made her stand in front of them4 and said to Jesus,t “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery.5 In the law Moses commanded us to stone to deaths such women.s What then do you say?”6 (Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges againstt him.)s Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger.t7 When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straightt and replied,t “Whoever among you is guiltlesst may be the first to throw a stone at her.”

8 Thent he bent over again and wrote on the ground.
9 Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones,t until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.10 Jesus stood up straightt and said to her, “Woman,s where are they? Did no one condemn you?”

11 She replied, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”]]ss

Jesus as the Light of the World

12 Then Jesus spoke out again,t “I am the light of the world.s The one who follows me will nevert walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”13 So the Phariseess objected,t “You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!”s14 Jesus answered,t “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you peoplet do not know where I came from or where I am going.s15 You peoplet judge by outward appearances;t I do not judge anyone.s16 But if I judge, my evaluation is accurate,t because I am not alone when I judge,t but I and the Father who sent me do so together.t17 It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.s

18 I testify about myselft and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 Then they began askingt him, “Who is your father?” Jesus answered, “You do not know either me or my Father. If you knew me you would know my Father too.”s

20 (Jesust spoke these words near the offering boxtss while he was teaching in the temple courts.t No one seized him because his timet had not yet come.)s

Where Jesus Came From and Where He is Going

21 Then Jesust said to them again,t “I am going away, and you will look for met but will die in your sin.t Where I am going you cannot come.”22 So the Jewish leaderst began to say,t “Perhaps he is going to kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’”23 Jesus replied,t “You peoplet are from below; I am from above. You people are from this world; I am not from this world.

24 Thus I told yout that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he,ts you will die in your sins.”
25 So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus replied,t “What I have told you from the beginning.26 I have many things to say and to judget about you, but the Fathert who sent me is truthful,t and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world.”t

27 (They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.)s
28 Then Jesus said,t “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he,t and I do nothing on my own initiative,t but I speak just what the Father taught me.t29 And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone,t because I always do those things that please him.”

30 While he was saying these things, many peoplet believed in him.

Abraham’s Children and the Devil’s Children

31 Then Jesus said to those Judeanst who had believed him, “If you continue to follow my teaching,t you are reallyt my disciples32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”ts33 “We are descendantst of Abraham,” they replied,t “and have never been anyone’s slaves! How can you say,t ‘You will become free’?”34 Jesus answered them, “I tell you the solemn truth,t everyone who practicest sin is a slavet of sin.35 The slave does not remain in the familyt forever, but the son remains forever.s36 So if the sont sets you free, you will be really free.37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants.t But you wantt to kill me, because my teachingt makes no progress among you.t

38 I am telling you the things I have seen while with thes Father;t as for you,t practice the things you have heard from thes Father!”
39 They answered him,t “Abraham is our father!”t Jesus replied,t “If you ares Abraham’s children, you would be doingst the deeds of Abraham.40 But now you are tryingt to kill me, a man who has told yout the truth I heard from God. Abraham did not do this!t

41 You peoplet are doing the deeds of your father.”
Thens they said to Jesus,t “We were not born as a result of immorality!s We have only one Father, God himself.”42 Jesus replied,t “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come from God and am now here.t It have not come on my own initiative,t but het sent me.43 Why don’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot acceptt my teaching.t44 You peoplet are fromt your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires.t Het was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth,t because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies,t he speaks according to his own nature,t because he is a liar and the father of lies.t45 But because I am telling yout the truth, you do not believe me.46 Who among you can prove me guiltyt of any sin?t If I am telling yout the truth, why don’t you believe me?

47 The one who belongs tot God listens and respondst to God’s words. You don’t listen and respond,t because you don’t belong to God.”t
48 The Judeanst replied,t “Aren’t we correct in sayingt that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?”t49 Jesus answered, “I am not possessed by a demon,t but I honor my Father – and yett you dishonor me.50 I am not trying to gett praise for myself.t There is one who demandst it, and he also judges.t

51 I tell you the solemn truth,t if anyone obeyst my teaching,t he will never see death.”ts
52 Thens the Judeanst responded,t “Now we know you’re possessed by a demon!t Both Abraham and the prophets died, and yett you say, ‘If anyone obeyst my teaching,t he will never experiencet death.’t53 You aren’t greater than our father Abraham who died, are you?t And the prophets died too! Who do you claim to be?”54 Jesus replied,t “If I glorify myself, my glory is worthless.t The one who glorifies me is my Father, about whom you peoplet say, ‘He is our God.’55 Yett you do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him,t I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obeyt his teaching.t

56 Your father Abraham was overjoyedt to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.”t
57 Then the Judeanst replied,t “You are not yet fifty years old!t Havet you seen Abraham?”58 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth,t before Abraham came into existence,t I am!”s

59 Then they picked upt stones to throw at him,s but Jesus hid himself and went out from the temple area.st
