Évangile selon Jean 8

1 Mais Jésus se rendit au mont des Olivierst. 2 Tôt le lendemain matin, il retourna dans le temple et tous les gens s’approchèrent de lui. Il s’assit et se mit à leur donner son enseignement. 3 Les maîtres de la loi et les Pharisiens lui amenèrent alors une femme qu’on avait surprise en train de commettre un adultère. Ils la placèrent devant tout le monde 4 et dirent à Jésus : « Maître, cette femme a été surprise au moment même où elle commettait un adultère.

5 Moïse nous a ordonné dans la loi de tuer de telles femmes à coups de pierrest. Et toi, qu’en dis-tu ? »
6 Ils disaient cela pour lui tendre un piège, afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Mais Jésus se baissa et se mit à écrire avec le doigt sur le sol. 7 Comme ils continuaient à le questionner, Jésus se redressa et leur dit : « Que celui d’entre vous qui n’a jamais péché lui jette la première pierre. » 8 Puis il se baissa de nouveau et se remit à écrire sur le sol. 9 Quand ils entendirent ces mots, ils partirent l’un après l’autre, les plus âgés d’abord. Jésus resta seul avec la femme, qui se tenait encore devant lui. 10 Alors il se redressa et lui dit : « Eh bien, où sont-ils ? Personne ne t’a condamnée ? » –

11 « Personne, Maître », répondit-elle. « Je ne te condamne pas non plus, dit Jésus. Tu peux t’en aller, mais désormais ne pèche plus. »]

Jésus, la lumière du monde


12 Jésus adressa de nouveau la parole à la foule et dit : « Je suis la lumière du mondet. Celui qui me suit aura la lumière de la vie et ne marchera plus jamais dans l’obscurité. » 13 Les Pharisiens lui dirent : « Tu te rends témoignage à toi-même ; ton témoignage est sans valeur. » 14 Jésus leur répondit : « Même si je me rends témoignage à moi-même, mon témoignage est valable, parce que je sais d’où je suis venu et où je vais. Mais vous, vous ne savez ni d’où je viens ni où je vais. 15 Vous jugez à la manière des hommes ; moi je ne juge personne. 16 Cependant, s’il m’arrive de juger, mon jugement est valable, parce que je ne suis pas tout seul pour juger, mais le Père qui m’a envoyé est avec moi. 17 Il est écrit dans votre loi que si deux personnes apportent le même témoignage, ce témoignage est valablet. 18 Je me rends témoignage à moi-même et le Père qui m’a envoyé témoigne aussi pour moi. »

19 Ils lui demandèrent : « Où est ton Père ? » Jésus répondit : « Vous ne connaissez ni moi ni mon Père. Si vous me connaissiez, vous connaîtriez aussi mon Père. »

20 Jésus prononça ces paroles alors qu’il enseignait dans le temple, à l’endroit où se trouvent les troncs à offrandes. Personne ne l’arrêta, parce que son heure n’était pas encore venue.

« Vous ne pouvez pas aller là où je vais »


21 Jésus leur dit encore : « Je vais partir ; vous me chercherez, mais vous mourrez dans votre péché. Vous ne pouvez pas aller là où je vais. » 22 Les Juifs se disaient : « Va-t-il se suicider, puisqu’il dit : “Vous ne pouvez pas aller là où je vais” ? » 23 Jésus leur répondit : « Vous êtes d’en bas, mais moi je viens d’en haut. Vous appartenez à ce monde, mais moi je n’appartiens pas à ce monde. 24 C’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que vous mourrez dans vos péchés. Car vous mourrez dans vos péchés si vous ne croyez pas que “je suist”. » – 25 « Qui es-tu ? » lui demandèrent-ils. Jésus leur répondit : « Celui que je vous ai dit depuis le commencementt.

26 J’ai beaucoup à dire et à juger à votre sujet. Mais j’annonce au monde seulement ce que j’ai appris de celui qui m’a envoyé ; et lui, il dit la vérité. »
27 Ils ne comprirent pas qu’il leur parlait du Père. 28 Jésus leur dit alors : « Quand vous aurez élevé le Fils de l’hommet, vous reconnaîtrez que “je suis” ; vous reconnaîtrez que je ne fais rien par moi-même : je dis seulement ce que le Père m’a enseigné. 29 Celui qui m’a envoyé est avec moi ; il ne m’a pas laissé seul, parce que je fais toujours ce qui lui plaît. »

30 Tandis que Jésus parlait ainsi, beaucoup crurent en lui.

Les hommes libres et les esclaves


31 Jésus dit alors aux Juifs qui avaient cru en lui : « Si vous restez fidèles à mes paroles, vous êtes vraiment mes disciples ; 32 ainsi vous connaîtrez la vérité et la vérité vous rendra libres. » 33 Ils lui répondirent : « Nous sommes les descendants d’Abrahamt et nous n’avons jamais été les esclaves de personne. Comment peux-tu nous dire : “Vous deviendrez libres” ? » 34 Jésus leur répondit : « Oui, je vous le déclare, c’est la vérité : tout homme qui pèche est un esclave du péché. 35 Un esclave ne fait pas pour toujours partie de la famille, mais un fils en fait partie pour toujours. 36 Si le Fils vous libère, vous serez alors vraiment libres. 37 Je sais que vous êtes les descendants d’Abraham. Mais vous cherchez à me faire mourir, parce que vous refusez mes paroles. 38 Moi, je parle de ce que mon Père m’a montré, mais vous, vous faites ce que votre père vous a dit. » 39 Ils lui répliquèrent : « Notre père, c’est Abraham. » – « Si vous étiez vraiment les enfants d’Abraham, leur dit Jésus, vous feriez les actions qu’il a faitest. 40 Mais maintenant, bien que je vous aie dit la vérité que j’ai apprise de Dieu, vous cherchez à me faire mourir. Abraham n’a rien fait de semblable ! 41 Vous, vous faites les mêmes actions que votre père. » Ils lui répondirent : « Nous ne sommes pas des enfants illégitimes. Nous avons un seul Père, Dieu. » 42 Jésus leur dit : « Si Dieu était vraiment votre Père, vous m’aimeriez, car je suis venu de Dieu et je suis ici de sa part. Je ne suis pas venu de moi-même, mais c’est lui qui m’a envoyé. 43 Pourquoi ne comprenez-vous pas ce que je vous dis ? Parce que vous êtes incapables d’écouter mes paroles. 44 Vous avez pour père le diable et vous voulez faire ce que votre père désire. Il a été meurtrier dès le commencement. Il ne s’est jamais tenu dans la vérité parce qu’il n’y a pas de vérité en lui. Quand il dit des mensonges, il parle de la manière qui lui est naturelle, parce qu’il est menteur et père du mensonge. 45 Mais moi je dis la vérité et c’est pourquoi vous ne me croyez pas. 46 Qui d’entre vous peut prouver que j’ai péché ? Et si je dis la vérité, pourquoi ne me croyez-vous pas ?

47 Celui qui est de Dieu écoute les paroles de Dieu. Mais vous n’êtes pas de Dieu et c’est pourquoi vous n’écoutez pas. »

Jésus et Abraham


48 Les Juifs répondirent à Jésus : « N’avons-nous pas raison de dire que tu es un Samaritain et que tu es possédé d’un esprit mauvais ? » – 49 « Je ne suis pas possédé, répondit Jésus, mais j’honore mon Père et vous, vous refusez de m’honorer. 50 Je ne cherche pas la gloire pour moi-même. Il en est un qui la cherche pour moi et qui juge.

51 Oui, je vous le déclare, c’est la vérité : celui qui obéit à mes paroles ne mourra jamais. »
52 Les Juifs lui dirent : « Maintenant nous sommes sûrs que tu es possédé d’un esprit mauvais ! Abraham est mort, les prophètes sont morts, et toi, tu dis : “Celui qui obéit à mes paroles ne mourra jamais.” 53 Abraham, notre père, est mort : penses-tu être plus grand que lui ? Les prophètes aussi sont morts. Pour qui te prends-tu ? » 54 Jésus répondit : « Si je me glorifiais moi-même, ma gloire ne vaudrait rien. Celui qui me glorifie, c’est mon Père. Vous dites de lui : “Il est notre Dieu”, 55 alors que vous ne le connaissez pas. Moi je le connais. Si je disais que je ne le connais pas, je serais un menteur comme vous. Mais je le connais et j’obéis à ses paroles. 56 Abraham, votre père, s’est réjoui à la pensée de voir mon jour ; il l’a vu et en a été heureux. » 57 Les Juifs lui dirent : « Tu n’as pas encore cinquante ans et tu as vu Abrahamt ? » 58 Jésus leur répondit : « Oui, je vous le déclare, c’est la vérité : avant qu’Abraham soit né, “je suist”. » 59 Ils ramassèrent alors des pierres pour les jeter contre lui. Mais Jésus se cacha et sortit du temple.

John 8

1 but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,4 they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?6 And this they said, trying him, that they might have whereof to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.8 And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.9 And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.10 And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.12 Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.16 Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.17 Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.18 I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.19 They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.20 These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.21 He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.22 The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.25 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.27 They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.28 Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.29 And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.30 As he spake these things, many believed on him.31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples;32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.35 And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.38 I speak the things which I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from your father.39 They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.41 Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.45 But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.46 Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?47 He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.48 The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?49 Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.50 But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.52 The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;55 and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.57 The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
