Jesus vergibt der Ehebrecherin

1 tJesus verließ die Stadt und ging zum Ölberg.2 Aber schon früh am nächsten Morgen war er wieder im Tempel. Viele Menschen drängten sich um ihn. Er setzte sich und lehrte sie.

3 Da schleppten die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer eine Frau heran, die beim Ehebruch überrascht worden war, stießen sie in die Mitte4 und sagten zu Jesus: »Lehrer, diese Frau wurde auf frischer Tat beim Ehebruch ertappt.5 Im Gesetz hat Mose uns befohlen, eine solche Frau zu steinigen. Was meinst du dazu?«t

6 tSie fragten dies, um Jesus auf die Probe zu stellen und ihn dann anklagen zu können. Aber Jesus bückte sich nur und schrieb mit dem Finger auf die Erde.7 tAls sie nicht locker ließen, richtete er sich auf und sagte: »Wer von euch noch nie gesündigt hat, soll den ersten Stein auf sie werfen!«8 Dann bückte er sich wieder und schrieb weiter auf die Erde.9 Als die Menschen das hörten, gingen sie einer nach dem anderen davon - die älteren zuerst. Schließlich war Jesus mit der Frau allein.

10 Da stand er auf und fragte sie: »Wo sind jetzt deine Ankläger? Hat dich denn keiner verurteilt?«11 t»Nein, Herr«, antwortete sie. »Dann verurteile ich dich auch nicht«, entgegnete ihr Jesus. »Geh, aber sündige nun nicht mehr!«

Das Licht, das zum Leben führt

12 tEin anderes Mal sagte Jesus zu den Menschen: »Ich bin das Licht für die Welt. Wer mir nachfolgt, irrt nicht mehr in der Dunkelheit umher, sondern folgt dem Licht, das ihn zum Leben führt.«

13 Da unterbrachen ihn die Pharisäer: »Du bist doch wieder nur dein eigener Zeuge. Das beweist noch lange nicht, dass du die Wahrheit sagst.«14 tJesus erwiderte ihnen: »Auch wenn ich hier als mein eigener Zeuge auftrete, sage ich die Wahrheit. Denn ich weiß, woher ich komme und wohin ich gehe; aber ihr wisst das alles nicht.15 Ihr urteilt über mich nach dem äußeren Schein. Ich urteile über niemanden so.16 Wenn ich aber über jemanden das Urteil spreche, dann ist mein Urteil gerecht. Denn ich richte nicht allein, sondern der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, spricht das Urteil.17 Nach eurem Gesetz ist vor Gericht eine Aussage glaubwürdig, wenn es dafür mindestens zwei Zeugen gibt.t18 tNun, ich selbst trete für mich als Zeuge auf, und mein Vater, der mich gesandt hat, ist auch mein Zeuge.«19 t»Wo ist denn dein Vater?«, fragten sie daraufhin. Jesus antwortete: »Ihr wisst ja nicht einmal, wer ich bin; deshalb kennt ihr meinen Vater erst recht nicht. Wenn ihr mich kennen würdet, wüsstet ihr auch, wer mein Vater ist.«

20 tDas alles sagte Jesus an der Stelle des Tempels, wo das Geldopfer gesammelt wurde. Aber niemand nahm ihn fest, denn die Zeit dafür war noch nicht gekommen.

»Wo ich sein werde, könnt ihr nicht hingehen«

21 Später sagte Jesus noch einmal zu ihnen: »Ich gehe fort. Ihr werdet mich dann verzweifelt suchen, aber ihr werdet in euren Sünden umkommen. Ihr könnt nicht dorthin gehen, wo ich sein werde.«

22 »Will er sich etwa das Leben nehmen?«, fragten sich die Juden. »Oder was heißt das: ›Ihr könnt nicht dorthin gehen, wo ich sein werde‹?«23 tDazu sagte ihnen Jesus: »Ihr seid von hier unten; ich komme von oben. Ihr gehört zu dieser Welt; ich gehöre nicht zu dieser Welt.24 tDeshalb habe ich gesagt: Ihr werdet in euren Sünden umkommen. Wenn ihr nicht glaubt, dass ich es bin, gibt es keine Rettung für euch.«

25 »Dann sag uns, wer du bist!«, forderten sie ihn auf. Jesus erwiderte: »Darüber habe ich doch von Anfang an mit euch geredet.«t26 »Ich hätte euch viel vorzuwerfen und viel an euch zu verurteilen. Trotzdem sage ich euch nur, was ich von dem gehört habe, der mich gesandt hat. Er ist wahrhaftig und zuverlässig.«

27 Aber sie verstanden noch immer nicht, dass Jesus von Gott, seinem Vater, sprach.28 tDeshalb erklärte er ihnen: »Wenn ihr den Menschensohn erhöhtt habt, werdet ihr erkennen, wer ich bin, und einsehen, dass ich nichts von mir aus tue, sondern weitergebe, was mir mein Vater gesagt hat.29 Er, der mich gesandt hat, ist bei mir und lässt mich nie allein, weil ich immer das tue, was ihm gefällt.«30 Nach diesen Worten glaubten viele an Jesus.

Wer sündigt, ist ein Gefangener der Sünde

31 tZu den Juden, die nun an ihn glaubten, sagte Jesus: »Wenn ihr an meinen Worten festhaltet und das tut, was ich euch gesagt habe, dann gehört ihr wirklich zu mir.32 Ihr werdet die Wahrheit erkennen, und die Wahrheit wird euch befreien!«

33 t»Aber wir sind Nachkommen Abrahams und niemals Sklaven gewesen«, wandten sie ein. »Wovon sollen wir eigentlich befreit werden?«

34 tJesus erwiderte ihnen: »Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Jeder, der sündigt, ist ein Gefangener der Sünde.35 Ein Sklave kann sich nicht darauf verlassen, dass er immer in dem Haus bleibt, in dem er arbeitet. Dieses Recht hat nur der Sohn der Familie.36 tWenn euch also der Sohn Gottes befreit, dann seid ihr wirklich frei.

37 Ich weiß natürlich auch, dass ihr Nachkommen Abrahams seid. Und trotzdem wollt ihr mich töten, weil ihr meine Worte nicht zu Herzen nehmt.38 Ich spreche von dem, was ich bei meinem Vater gesehen habe. Und ihr tut, was ihr von eurem Vater gehört habt.«

39 »Unser Vater ist Abraham«, erklärten sie. »Nein«, widersprach ihnen Jesus, »wenn er es wirklich wäre, würdet ihr auch so handeln wie er.40 Weil ich euch die Wahrheit sage, die ich von Gott gehört habe, wollt ihr mich töten. Das hätte Abraham nie getan.41 tNein, ihr handelt genau wie euer wirklicher Vater.« »Wir sind doch schließlich nicht im Ehebruch gezeugt worden«, wandten sie ein. »Wir haben nur einen Vater: Gott selbst!«

42 Doch Jesus entgegnete ihnen: »Wenn es tatsächlich so wäre, dann würdet ihr mich lieben; denn ich komme ja von Gott zu euch; in seinem Auftrag und nicht aus eigenem Entschluss.43 tAber ich will euch sagen, weshalb ihr mich nicht versteht: weil ihr meine Worte überhaupt nicht hören könnt!44 tDenn ihr seid Kinder des Teufels. Und deshalb handelt ihr so, wie es eurem Vater gefällt. Der war schon von Anfang an ein Mörder, wollte mit der Wahrheit nichts zu tun haben und war ihr schlimmster Feind. Sein ganzes Wesen ist Lüge, er ist der Lügner schlechthin - ja, der Vater jeder Lüge.

45 Mir aber glaubt ihr nicht, weil ich die Wahrheit sage.46 tOder kann mir einer von euch auch nur eine einzige Sünde nachweisen? Wenn ich euch die Wahrheit sage, warum glaubt ihr mir dann nicht?47 Wer Gott zum Vater hat, der hört, was Gott sagt. Ihr aber habt Gott nicht zum Vater, und deshalb hört ihr auch seine Worte nicht.«

Jesus, ein Gotteslästerer?

48 t»Also hatten wir doch Recht«, schimpften die Juden. »Du bist ein Samariter, von bösen Geistern besessen!«

49 »Nein«, antwortete Jesus, »ich habe keinen bösen Geist, sondern ich ehre meinen Vater. Aber ihr zieht meine Ehre in den Schmutz.50 Trotzdem suche ich nicht meine eigene Ehre. Gott will, dass ihr mich anerkennt. Er wird auch das Urteil über euch sprechen.51 tIch sage euch die Wahrheit: Wer meine Botschaft annimmt und danach lebt, wird niemals sterben.«

52 Verärgert riefen die Juden: »Jetzt hast du dich verraten: Du wirst von einem Dämon beherrscht! Selbst Abraham und die Propheten sind gestorben. Und da willst du behaupten: ›Wer nach meiner Botschaft lebt, wird niemals sterben.‹?53 tBist du etwa mehr als unser Vater Abraham, der doch auch gestorben ist? Oder willst du mehr sein als die Propheten, die schließlich alle sterben mussten? Was bildest du dir eigentlich ein?«

54 Jesus entgegnete: »Würde ich mich selbst loben, könntet ihr mir zu Recht misstrauen. Aber mich ehrt mein Vater. Ihr nennt ihn zwar euren Gott.55 tDoch ihr kennt ihn überhaupt nicht. Ich kenne ihn. Wenn ich sagen würde, ich kenne ihn nicht, dann wäre ich ein Lügner wie ihr. Doch ich kenne ihn und erfülle seinen Auftrag.56 tEuer Vater Abraham freute sich auf den Tag, an dem ich kommen würde. Er hat mein Kommen gesehen und war froh darüber.«

57 »Was?«, fragten die Juden befremdet. »Du bist noch nicht einmal fünfzig Jahre alt und willst Abraham gesehen haben?«58 tJesus entgegnete ihnen: »Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Lange bevor Abraham überhaupt geboren wurde, war ich da.t«

59 tZornig griffen sie nach Steinen, um Jesus zu töten. Aber er entkam ihnen und verließ den Tempel.

1 but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,4 they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?6 And this they said, trying him, that they might have whereof to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.8 And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.9 And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.10 And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.12 Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.16 Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.17 Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.18 I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.19 They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.20 These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.21 He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.22 The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.25 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.27 They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.28 Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.29 And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.30 As he spake these things, many believed on him.31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples;32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.35 And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.38 I speak the things which I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from your father.39 They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.41 Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.45 But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.46 Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?47 He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.48 The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?49 Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.50 But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.52 The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;55 and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.57 The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
