1 Jésus se rendit au mont des Oliviers.
2 tMais dès le matin, il retourna au temple, et tout le peuple vint à lui. S’étant assis, il les instruisait.
3 tAlors les scribes et les pharisiens amènent une femme surprise en adultère, la placent au milieu 4 tet lui disent : Maître, cette femme a été surprise en flagrant délit d’adultère. 5 tMoïse, dans la loi, nous a ordonné de lapider de telles femmes : toi, donc, que dis-tu ? 6 tIls disaient cela pour le mettre à l’épreuve, afin de pouvoir l’accuser. Mais Jésus se baissa et se mit à écrire avec le doigt sur la terre. 7 tComme ils continuaient à l’interroger, il se redressa et leur dit : Que celui de vous qui est sans péché lui jette le premier une pierre ! 8 tDe nouveau il se baissa et se mit à écrire sur la terre. 9 tQuand ils entendirent cela, ils se retirèrent un à un, à commencer par les plus âgés. Et il resta seul avec la femme qui était là, au milieu. 10 tAlors Jésus se redressa et lui dit : Eh bien, femme, où sont-ils passés ? Personne ne t’a donc condamnée ?
11 tElle répondit : Personne, Seigneur. Jésus dit : Moi non plus, je ne te condamne pas ; va, et désormais ne pèche plus.]La lumière du monde
12 tJésus leur dit encore : C’est moi qui suis la lumière du monde ; celui qui me suit ne marchera jamais dans les ténèbres, mais il aura la lumière de la vie.
13 tLà-dessus, les pharisiens lui dirent : C’est toi qui te rends témoignage à toi-même, ton témoignage n’est pas vrai. 14 tJésus leur répondit : Même si c’est moi qui me rends témoignage à moi-même, mon témoignage est vrai, car je sais d’où je suis venu et où je vais ; vous, vous ne savez ni d’où je viens ni où je vais. 15 tVous, vous jugez selon la chair ; moi, je ne juge personne. 16 tEt si, moi, je jugeais, mon jugement serait vrai, car je ne suis pas seul : il y a moi et le Père qui m’a envoyé. 17 tDans votre loi, il est écrit que le témoignage de deux hommes est vrai. 18 tMoi, je me rends témoignage à moi-même, et le Père qui m’a envoyé me rend témoignage.
19 tIls lui dirent donc : Où est ton Père ? Jésus répondit : Vous ne connaissez ni moi, ni mon Père. Si vous me connaissiez, vous connaîtriez aussi mon Père.
20 tIl dit ces paroles dans le Trésor, alors qu’il enseignait dans le temple ; et personne ne vint l’arrêter, parce que son heure n’était pas encore venue.Jésus, l’envoyé du Père
21 tIl leur dit encore : Moi, je m’en vais ; vous me chercherez, et vous mourrez dans votre péché ; là où moi, je vais, vous, vous ne pouvez pas venir. 22 tLes Juifs dirent : Va-t-il se tuer lui-même, pour qu’il dise : « Là où, moi, je vais, vous, vous ne pouvez pas venir. » 23 tIl leur disait : Vous, vous êtes d’en bas ; moi, je suis d’en haut. Vous, vous êtes de ce monde ; moi, je ne suis pas de ce monde. 24 tC’est pourquoi je vous ai dit que vous mourrez dans vos péchés ; en effet, si vous ne croyez pas que, moi, je suis, vous mourrez dans vos péchés. 25 tIls lui disaient : Qui es-tu, toi ? Jésus leur répondit : Ce que je vous dis depuis le commencement. 26 tJ’ai à votre sujet beaucoup à dire et à juger ; mais celui qui m’a envoyé est vrai, et moi, je dis au monde ce que j’ai entendu de lui. 27 tIls ne surent pas qu’il leur parlait du Père. 28 tAlors Jésus leur dit : Quand vous aurez élevé le Fils de l’homme, vous saurez que, moi, je suis, et que je ne fais rien de moi-même, mais que je parle selon ce que le Père m’a enseigné.
29 tCelui qui m’a envoyé est avec moi ; il ne m’a pas laissé seul, parce que, moi, je fais toujours ce qu’il agrée.
30 tComme il parlait ainsi, beaucoup mirent leur foi en lui.Fils d’Abraham ou fils du diable ?
31 tJésus, donc, disait aux Juifs qui avaient mis leur foi en lui : Si vous demeurez dans ma parole, vous êtes vraiment mes disciples ; 32 tvous connaîtrez la vérité, et la vérité vous rendra libres. 33 tIls lui répondirent : Nous sommes la descendance d’Abraham et nous n’avons jamais été esclaves de personne ; comment peux-tu dire, toi : « Vous deviendrez libres ! » 34 tJésus leur répondit :Amen, amen, je vous le dis, quiconque fait le péché est esclave du péché. 35 tOr l’esclave ne demeure pas pour toujours dans la maison ; le fils, lui, demeure pour toujours.
36 tSi donc le Fils vous rend libres, vous serez réellement libres.
37 tJe sais que vous êtes la descendance d’Abraham ; mais vous cherchez à me tuer, parce que ma parole ne trouve pas de place en vous.
38 tMoi, je dis ce que j’ai vu auprès du Père ; vous aussi, faites donc ce que vous avez entendu du Père.
39 tIls lui répondirent : Notre père, c’est Abraham. Jésus leur dit : Si vous étiez enfants d’Abraham, vous feriez les œuvres d’Abraham. 40 tMais maintenant vous cherchez à me tuer, moi, un homme qui vous ai dit la vérité que j’ai entendue de Dieu. Abraham n’a pas fait cela.
41 tVous, vous faites les œuvres de votre père.
Ils lui dirent : Nous, nous ne sommes pas nés de la prostitution ; nous avons un seul Père, Dieu. 42 tJésus leur dit : Si Dieu était votre Père, vous m’aimeriez ; car, moi, c’est de Dieu que je suis sorti et que je viens ; je ne suis pas venu de moi-même, mais c’est lui qui m’a envoyé. 43 tPourquoi ne connaissez-vous pas mon langage ? Parce que vous ne pouvez pas entendre ma parole. 44 tVous, vous êtes de votre père, le diable, et vous voulez faire les désirs de votre père. Lui, il était homicide dès le commencement ; il ne se tenait pas dans la vérité, parce qu’il n’y a pas de vérité en lui. Lorsqu’il dit le mensonge, il parle de ce qui lui est propre, car il est à la fois le menteur et son père. 45 tEt moi, parce que je dis la vérité, vous ne me croyez pas. 46 tQui de vous me confondra en matière de péché ? Si je dis la vérité, pourquoi, vous, ne me croyez-vous pas ?
47 tCelui qui est de Dieu entend les paroles de Dieu. Si, vous, vous n’entendez pas, c’est parce que vous n’êtes pas de Dieu.Jésus et Abraham
48 tLes Juifs lui répondirent : N’est-ce pas nous qui avons raison de dire que, toi, tu es un Samaritain, et que tu as un démon ? 49 tJésus répondit : Moi, je n’ai pas de démon, mais j’honore mon Père, et vous, vous me déshonorez. 50 tMoi, je ne cherche pas ma gloire ; il en est un qui la cherche, et qui juge.
51 tAmen, amen, je vous le dis, si quelqu’un garde ma parole, il ne verra jamais la mort.
52 tLes Juifs lui dirent donc : Maintenant nous savons que tu as un démon. Abraham est mort, les prophètes aussi, et toi, tu dis : « Si quelqu’un garde ma parole, il ne goûtera jamais la mort ! » 53 tSerais-tu, toi, plus grand qu’Abraham, notre père, qui est mort ? Les prophètes aussi sont morts. Qui prétends-tu être ? 54 tJésus répondit : Si c’est moi qui me glorifie moi-même, ma gloire n’est rien. C’est mon Père qui me glorifie, lui dont vous, vous dites : « Il est notre Dieu ! » 55 tEt vous ne le connaissez pas ; moi, je le connais. Et si je disais que je ne le connais pas, je serais un menteur comme vous. Mais je le connais et je garde sa parole. 56 tAbraham, votre père, a été transporté d’allégresse à la perspective de voir mon jour : il l’a vu, et il s’est réjoui. 57 Les Juifs lui dirent : Tu n’as pas encore cinquante ans, et tu as vu Abraham ?
58 tJésus leur dit :Amen, amen, je vous le dis, avant qu’Abraham vienne à l’existence, moi, je suis.
59 tLà-dessus, ils prirent des pierres pour les lui jeter ; mais Jésus se cacha et sortit du temple.

1 but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.3 And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,4 they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?6 And this they said, trying him, that they might have whereof to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.7 But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.8 And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.9 And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.10 And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?11 And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.12 Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.16 Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.17 Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.18 I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.19 They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.20 These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.21 He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.22 The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.25 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.27 They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.28 Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.29 And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.30 As he spake these things, many believed on him.31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, then are ye truly my disciples;32 and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.33 They answered unto him, We are Abraham’s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.35 And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.36 If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.38 I speak the things which I have seen with my Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from your father.39 They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.41 Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.43 Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.45 But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.46 Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?47 He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear them not, because ye are not of God.48 The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?49 Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.50 But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.52 The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?54 Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;55 and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.57 The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.59 They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
