Johannes 8

1 og Jesus gjekk ut til Oljeberget. 2 Tidleg om morgonen dagen etter kom han til templet att. Alt folket samla seg ikring han, og han sette seg og lærte dei. 3 Då kom dei skriftlærde og farisearane med ei kvinne som var gripen i ekteskapsbrot; dei stelte henne fram 4 og sa: «Meister, denne kvinna har dei kome over medan ho gjorde ekteskapsbrot. 5 Moses har sagt oss føre i lova at slike kvinner skal steinast. Kva seier no du?»t 6 Dette sa dei for å setja han på prøve, så dei kunne få noko å klaga han for. Jesus bøygde seg ned og skreiv på jorda med fingeren. 7 Men då dei heldt fram med å spørja, rette han seg opp og sa: «Den av dykk som er utan synd, kan kasta den fyrste steinen på henne.»t 8 Så bøygde han seg ned att og skreiv på jorda. 9 Då dei høyrde det, gjekk dei bort, den eine etter den andre, dei eldste fyrst. Til sist var Jesus att åleine med kvinna som stod der. 10 Då rette han seg opp og sa: «Kvar er dei, kvinne? Var det ingen som dømde deg?»

11 «Nei, Herre, ingen,» svara ho. Då sa Jesus: «Så dømer ikkje eg deg heller. Gå bort og synda ikkje meir!»

Jesus, verdsens ljos

12 Atter tala Jesus til folket og sa: «Eg er ljoset for verda. Den som fylgjer meg, skal ikkje ferdast i mørkret, men ha livsens ljos.» t 13 Farisearane sa til han: «Du vitnar i eiga sak, vitnemålet ditt gjeld ikkje.» t 14 Jesus svara: «Vitnar eg i eiga sak, er vitnemålet mitt sant likevel, for eg veit kvar eg er komen ifrå og kvar eg fer av. Men de veit korkje kvar eg kjem ifrå eller kvar eg fer av. 15 De dømer på menneskevis; eg dømer ingen. t 16 Men om eg dømer, så gjeld domen min. For eg er ikkje åleine; han som sende meg, er med. 17 Og i dykkar eiga lov står det skrive at to manns vitnemål er sætande. t 18 Eg vitnar om meg sjølv, og Faderen som har sendt meg, vitnar òg om meg.» t 19 «Kvar er far din?» spurde dei. Jesus svara: «De kjenner korkje meg eller Far min. Hadde de kjent meg, hadde de kjent Far min òg.» t

20 Dette sa Jesus attmed tempelkista medan han lærte i heilagdomen. Men ingen la hand på han; for tida hans var endå ikkje komen.t

Dit eg går, kan ikkje de koma

21 Ein annan gong sa Jesus til dei: «Eg går bort, og de kjem til å leita etter meg; men de skal døy i synda dykkar. Dit eg går, kan ikkje de koma.» t 22 Då sa jødane: «Han vil vel ikkje ta sitt eige liv, sidan han seier: Dit eg går, kan ikkje de koma?» 23 Jesus sa til dei: «De er nedanfrå, eg er ovanfrå. De er av denne verda, eg er ikkje av denne verda. t 24 Eg sa at de skal døy i syndene dykkar. For trur de ikkje at «eg er Han», skal de døy i syndene dykkar.» t t 25 «Kven er du?» spurde dei. «Kvifor talar eg i det heile med dykk?» sa Jesus.

26 «Mykje har eg å seia om dykk og døma dykk for. Men han som sende meg, talar sant, og det eg har høyrt av han, det talar eg til verda.»t
27 Dei skjøna ikkje at det var om Faderen han tala til dei. 28 Difor sa Jesus: «Når de får lyft Menneskesonen opp, då skal de skjøna at «eg er Han», og at eg ikkje gjer noko av meg sjølv, men talar så som Faderen har lært meg. t t 29 Og han som har sendt meg, er med meg. Han lèt meg ikkje vera åleine; for eg gjer alltid det som er etter hans gode vilje.» t

30 Då han sa dette, var det mange som trudde på han.t

Abrahams ætt

31 Så sa Jesus til dei jødane som var komne til tru på han: «Vert de verande i mitt ord, er de rette læresveinane mine. t 32 Då skal de få kjenna sanninga, og sanninga skal gjera dykk frie.» 33 «Vi er Abrahams ætt,» la dei imot, «og har aldri vore trælar for nokon. Korleis kan du då seia at vi skal verta frie?» t 34 Jesus svara: «Sanneleg, sanneleg, det seier eg dykk: Kvar den som gjer synd, er træl under synda. t 35 Ein træl vert ikkje verande i huset for all tid, men ein son vert verande der for all tid. t 36 Får Sonen gjort dykk frie, vert de retteleg frie. t 37 Eg veit at de er Abrahams ætt, men de vil drepa meg, av di ordet mitt ikkje får rom hjå dykk. t 38 Eg talar om det eg har sett hjå Faderen, og de gjer det de har høyrt av dykkar far.» 39 «Vår far er Abraham,» sa dei. Jesus svara: «Var de Abrahams born, gjorde de som Abraham. t 40 Men no vil de drepa meg, ein mann som har sagt dykk sanninga, som han har høyrt av Gud. Det gjorde ikkje Abraham. t 41 De gjer som far dykkar gjorde.» «Vi er ikkje fødde i hor,» sa dei. «Vi har éin far, og det er Gud.» 42 Jesus sa til dei: «Var Gud far dykkar, så hadde de elska meg; for eg har gått ut frå Gud og er komen til dykk. Eg er ikkje komen av meg sjølv, men han har sendt meg. t 43 Kvifor skjønar de ikkje det eg seier? Fordi de ikkje toler å høyra mitt ord! 44 De har djevelen til far og vil gjera det far dykkar ynskjer. Han har vore ein mordar frå det fyrste og står ikkje i sanninga; det finst ikkje sanning i han. Når han lyg, talar han ut frå sitt eige, for han er ein lygnar og far åt lygna. t 45 Men eg seier sanninga, og difor trur de meg ikkje. 46 Kven av dykk kan peika på synd hjå meg? Men når det er sanning eg seier, kvifor trur de meg ikkje då? t

47 Den som er av Gud, høyrer Guds ord. De høyrer ikkje, fordi de ikkje er av Gud.»t
48 Då svara jødane: «Er det ikkje sant som vi seier at du er ein samaritan og er forgjord?» t 49 «Eg er ikkje forgjord,» sa Jesus, «men eg ærar Far min, og de vanærar meg. 50 Eg søkjer ikkje mi eiga ære. Det er ein som det gjer, og han dømer. t 51 Sanneleg, sanneleg, det seier eg dykk: Den som held fast på mitt ord, skal ikkje i all æve sjå døden.» t 52 Jødane svara: «No veit vi at du er forgjord. Abraham døydde, og profetane like eins. Og du seier: Den som held fast på mitt ord, skal ikkje i all æve smaka døden. 53 Du er vel ikkje større enn Abraham, far vår? Både han og profetane døydde. Kven gjev du deg ut for å vera?» t 54 Jesus svara: «Dersom eg ærar meg sjølv, er æra mi ingen ting verd. Det er Far min som ærar meg, han som de kallar dykkar Gud. 55 De har aldri kjent han, men eg kjenner han. Sa eg at eg ikkje kjenner han, var eg ein lygnar, liksom de. Men eg kjenner han og held fast på hans ord. t 56 Abraham, far dykkar, gledde seg hjarteleg til å sjå min dag. Han fekk sjå han og fryda seg.» t 57 «Du er enno ikkje femti år,» sa jødane, «og så har du sett Abraham?»

58 Jesus svara: «Sanneleg, sanneleg, det seier eg dykk: Før Abraham var, er eg.»t
59 Då tok dei opp steinar og ville kasta på han. Men Jesus løynde seg og gjekk bort frå tempelplassen.t

JOHN 8

1 but Jesus walked out to the Mount of Olives.

2 Then early the next morning he went to the temple. The people came to him, and he sat downt and started teaching them.
3 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses brought in a woman who had been caught in bed with a man who wasn't her husband. They made her stand in the middle of the crowd. 4 Then they said, “Teacher, this woman was caught sleeping with a man who isn't her husband.

5 t The Law of Moses teaches that a woman like this should be stoned to death! What do you say?”

6 They asked Jesus this question, because they wanted to test him and bring some charge against him. But Jesus simply bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger.
7  t They kept on asking Jesus about the woman. Finally, he stood up and said, “If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and throw the first stone at her!” 8 Once again he bent over and began writing on the ground.

9 The people left one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally, Jesus and the woman were there alone.

10 Jesus stood up and asked her, “Where is everyone? Isn't there anyone left to accuse you?”

11 “No sir,” the woman answered.
Then Jesus told her, “I am not going to accuse you either. You may go now, but don't sin anymore.”t

Jesus Is //the Light for the World

12  t Once again Jesus spoke to the people. This time he said, “I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won't be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life.”

13  t The Pharisees objected, “You are the only one speaking for yourself, and what you say isn't true!”

14 Jesus replied:
Even if I do speak for myself, what I say is true! I know where I came from and where I am going. But you don't know where I am from or where I am going. 15 You judge in the same way that everyone else does, but I don't judge anyone. 16 If I did judge, I would judge fairly, because I would not be doing it alone. The Father who sent me is here with me. 17 t Your Law requires two witnesses to prove that something is true.

18 I am one of my witnesses, and the Father who sent me is the other one.

19 “Where is your Father?” they asked.
“You don't know me or my Father!” Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would know my Father.”

20 Jesus said this while he was still teaching in the place where the temple treasures were stored. But no one arrested him, because his time had not yet come.t

You Cannot Go Where //I Am Going

21 Jesus also told them, “I am going away, and you will look for me. But you cannot go where I am going, and you will die with your sins unforgiven.”

22 The people asked, “Does he intend to kill himself? Is that what he means by saying we cannot go where he is going?”
23 Jesus answered, “You are from below, but I am from above. You belong to this world, but I don't.

24 This is why I said you will die with your sins unforgiven. If you don't have faith in me for who I am, t you will die, and your sins will not be forgiven.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked Jesus.
Jesus answered, “I am exactly who I told you at the beginning.

26 There is a lot more I could say to condemn you. But the one who sent me is truthful, and I tell the people of this world only what I have heard from him.”

27 No one understood that Jesus was talking to them about the Father.
28 Jesus went on to say, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, t you will know who I am. You will also know that I don't do anything on my own. I say only what my Father taught me.

29 The one who sent me is with me. I always do what pleases him, and he will never leave me.”

30 After Jesus said this, many of the people put their faith in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 Jesus told the people who had faith in him, “If you keep on obeying what I have said, you truly are my disciples.

32 t You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33  t They answered, “We are Abraham's children! We have never been anyone's slaves. How can you say we will be set free?”

34 Jesus replied:
I tell you for certain that anyone who sins is a slave of sin! 35 And slaves don't stay in the family forever, though the Son will always remain in the family. 36 If the Son gives you freedom, you are free! 37 I know that you are from Abraham's family. Yet you want to kill me, because my message isn't really in your hearts.

38 I am telling you what my Father has shown me, just as you are doing what your father has taught you.

Your Father Is the Devil

39 The people said to Jesus, “Abraham is our father!”
Jesus replied, “If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did. 40 Instead, you want to kill me for telling you the truth that God gave me. Abraham never did anything like that.

41 But you are doing exactly what your father does.”
“Don't accuse us of having someone else as our father!” they said. “We just have one father, and he is God.”

42 Jesus answered:
If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and now I am here. He sent me. I did not come on my own. 43 Why can't you understand what I am talking about? Can't you stand to hear what I am saying?

44 t Your father is the devil, and you do exactly what he wants. He has always been a murderer and a liar. There is nothing truthful about him. He speaks on his own, and everything he says is a lie. Not only is he a liar himself, but he is also the father of all lies.
45 Everything I have told you is true, and you still refuse to have faith in me. 46 Can any of you accuse me of sin? If you cannot, why won't you have faith in me? After all, I am telling you the truth.

47 Anyone who belongs to God will listen to his message. But you refuse to listen, because you don't belong to God.

Jesus and Abraham

48 The people told Jesus, “We were right to say that you are a Samaritant and that you have a demon in you!”
49 Jesus answered, “I don't have a demon in me. I honor my Father, and you refuse to honor me. 50 I don't want honor for myself. But there is one who wants me to be honored, and he is also the one who judges.

51 I tell you for certain that if you obey my words, you will never die.”
52 Then the people said, “Now we are sure that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and so are the prophets. How can you say that no one who obeys your words will ever die?

53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I honored myself, it would mean nothing. My Father is the one who honors me. You claim that he is your God, 55 even though you don't really know him. If I said I didn't know him, I would be a liar, just like all of you. But I know him, and I do what he says.

56 Your father Abraham was really glad to see me.”

57 “You are not even 50 years old!” they said. “How could you have seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that even before Abraham was, I was, and I am.”t 59 The people picked up stones to kill Jesus, but he hid and left the temple.
