Una mujer sorprendida en adulterio

1  Jesús regresó al monte de los Olivos, 2 pero muy temprano a la mañana siguiente, estaba de vuelta en el templo. Pronto se juntó una multitud, y él se sentó a enseñarles. 3 Mientras hablaba, los maestros de la ley religiosa y los fariseos le llevaron a una mujer que había sido sorprendida en el acto de adulterio; la pusieron en medio de la multitud.

4 «Maestro —le dijeron a Jesús—, esta mujer fue sorprendida en el acto de adulterio. 5 La ley de Moisés manda apedrearla, ¿tú qué dices?».

6 Intentaban tenderle una trampa para que dijera algo que pudieran usar en su contra, pero Jesús se inclinó y escribió con el dedo en el polvo. 7 Como ellos seguían exigiéndole una respuesta, él se incorporó nuevamente y les dijo: «¡Muy bien, pero el que nunca haya pecado que tire la primera piedra!». 8 Luego volvió a inclinarse y siguió escribiendo en el polvo.

9 Al oír eso, los acusadores se fueron retirando uno tras otro, comenzando por los de más edad, hasta que quedaron sólo Jesús y la mujer en medio de la multitud.

10 Entonces Jesús se incorporó de nuevo y le dijo a la mujer:
—¿Dónde están los que te acusaban? ¿Ni uno de ellos te condenó?

11 —Ni uno, Señor —dijo ella.
—Yo tampoco —le dijo Jesús—. Vete y no peques más.

Jesús, la luz del mundo

12 Jesús habló una vez más al pueblo y dijo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo. Si ustedes me siguen, no tendrán que andar en la oscuridad porque tendrán la luz que lleva a la vida».

13 Los fariseos respondieron:
—¡Tú haces esas declaraciones acerca de ti mismo! Un testimonio así no es válido.

14 —Estas afirmaciones sí son válidas, aunque las diga de mí mismo —respondió Jesús—. Pues sé de dónde vengo y adónde voy, pero eso es algo que ustedes no saben de mí. 15 Ustedes me juzgan con criterios humanos, pero yo no juzgo a nadie. 16 Y, si lo hiciera, mi juicio sería correcto en todo sentido, porque no estoy solo. El Padre,t quien me envió, está conmigo. 17 La misma ley de ustedes establece que, si dos personas concuerdan en algo, su testimonio se acepta como un hecho.t 18 Yo soy uno de los testigos, y mi Padre, quien me envió, es el otro.

19 —¿Dónde está tu padre? —le preguntaron.
Jesús contestó:
—Como ustedes no saben quién soy yo, tampoco saben quién es mi Padre. Si me conocieran a mí, también conocerían a mi Padre.

20 Jesús dijo todo esto mientras enseñaba en la parte del templo conocida como la tesorería, pero no lo arrestaron, porque aún no había llegado su momento.t

Advertencia para los incrédulos

21 Más tarde, Jesús volvió a decirles: «Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán, pero morirán en su pecado. Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir».

22 Por lo tanto la gentet se preguntaba: «¿Estará pensando suicidarse? ¿Qué quiere decir con “no pueden ir adonde yo voy”?».

23 Jesús continuó diciendo: «Ustedes son de abajo; yo soy de arriba. Ustedes pertenecen a este mundo; yo no. 24 Por eso dije que morirán en sus pecados; porque, a menos que crean que YO SOY quien afirmo ser,t morirán en sus pecados».

25 —¿Y quién eres? —preguntaron.
—El que siempre dije que era.t 26 Tengo mucho para decir acerca de ustedes y mucho para condenar, pero no lo haré. Pues digo sólo lo que oí del que me envió, y él es totalmente veraz.

27 Pero ellos seguían sin entender que les hablaba de su Padre.

28 Por eso Jesús dijo: «Cuando hayan levantado al Hijo del Hombre en la cruz, entonces comprenderán que YO SOY.t Yo no hago nada por mi cuenta, sino que digo únicamente lo que el Padre me enseñó. 29 Y el que me envió está conmigo, no me ha abandonado. Pues siempre hago lo que a él le agrada».

30 Entonces muchos de los que oyeron sus palabras creyeron en él.

Jesús y Abraham

31 Jesús les dijo a los que creyeron en él:
—Ustedes son verdaderamente mis discípulos si se mantienen fieles a mis enseñanzas; 32 y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.

33 —Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham —le respondieron—, nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Qué quieres decir con “los hará libres”?

34 Jesús contestó:
—Les digo la verdad, todo el que comete pecado es esclavo del pecado. 35 Un esclavo no es un miembro permanente de la familia, pero un hijo sí forma parte de la familia para siempre. 36 Así que, si el Hijo los hace libres, ustedes son verdaderamente libres. 37 Claro que me doy cuenta de que son descendientes de Abraham. Aun así, algunos de ustedes procuran matarme porque no tienen lugar para mi mensaje en su corazón. 38 Yo les cuento lo que vi cuando estaba con mi Padre, pero ustedes siguen el consejo de su padre.

39 —¡Nuestro padre es Abraham! —declararon.
—No —respondió Jesús— pues, si realmente fueran hijos de Abraham, seguirían su ejemplo.t 40 En cambio, procuran matarme porque les dije la verdad, la cual oí de Dios. Abraham nunca hizo algo así.

41 No, ustedes imitan a su verdadero padre.
—¡Nosotros no somos hijos ilegítimos! —respondieron—, Dios mismo es nuestro verdadero Padre.

42 Jesús les dijo:
—Si Dios fuera su Padre, ustedes me amarían, porque he venido a ustedes de parte de Dios. No estoy aquí por mi propia cuenta, sino que él me envió. 43 ¿Por qué no pueden entender lo que les digo? ¡Es porque ni siquiera toleran oírme! 44 Pues ustedes son hijos de su padre, el diablo, y les encanta hacer las cosas malvadas que él hace. Él ha sido asesino desde el principio y siempre ha odiado la verdad, porque en él no hay verdad. Cuando miente, actúa de acuerdo con su naturaleza porque es mentiroso y el padre de la mentira. 45 Por eso, es natural que no me crean cuando les digo la verdad. 46 ¿Quién de ustedes puede, con toda sinceridad, acusarme de pecado? Y si les digo la verdad, ¿por qué, entonces, no me creen? 47 Los que pertenecen a Dios escuchan con gusto las palabras de Dios, pero ustedes no las escuchan porque no pertenecen a Dios.

48 —¡Samaritano endemoniado! —replicaron—. ¿No veníamos diciendo que estabas poseído por un demonio?

49 —No —dijo Jesús—, no tengo ningún demonio. Pues yo honro a mi Padre; en cambio, ustedes me deshonran a mí. 50 Y, aunque no tengo ninguna intención de glorificarme a mí mismo, Dios va a glorificarme y él es el verdadero juez. 51 Les digo la verdad, ¡todo el que obedezca mi enseñanza jamás morirá!

52 —Ahora estamos convencidos de que estás poseído por un demonio —dijeron—. Hasta Abraham y los profetas murieron, pero tú dices: “¡El que obedezca mi enseñanza nunca morirá!”. 53 ¿Acaso eres más importante que nuestro padre Abraham? Él murió, igual que los profetas. ¿Tú quién te crees que eres?

54 Jesús contestó:
—Si yo buscara mi propia gloria, esa gloria no tendría ningún valor, pero es mi Padre quien me glorificará. Ustedes dicen: “Él es nuestro Dios”t, 55 pero ni siquiera lo conocen. Yo sí lo conozco; y si dijera lo contrario, ¡sería tan mentiroso como ustedes! Pero lo conozco y lo obedezco. 56 Abraham, el padre de ustedes, se alegró mientras esperaba con ansias mi venida; la vio y se llenó de alegría.

57 Entonces la gente le dijo:
—Ni siquiera tienes cincuenta años. ¿Cómo puedes decir que has visto a Abraham?t

58 Jesús contestó:
—Les digo la verdad, ¡aun antes de que Abraham naciera, YO SOY!t

59 En ese momento, tomaron piedras para arrojárselas, pero Jesús desapareció de la vista de ellos y salió del templo.

JOHN 8

1 but Jesus walked out to the Mount of Olives.

2 Then early the next morning he went to the temple. The people came to him, and he sat downt and started teaching them.
3 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses brought in a woman who had been caught in bed with a man who wasn't her husband. They made her stand in the middle of the crowd. 4 Then they said, “Teacher, this woman was caught sleeping with a man who isn't her husband.

5 t The Law of Moses teaches that a woman like this should be stoned to death! What do you say?”

6 They asked Jesus this question, because they wanted to test him and bring some charge against him. But Jesus simply bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger.
7  t They kept on asking Jesus about the woman. Finally, he stood up and said, “If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and throw the first stone at her!” 8 Once again he bent over and began writing on the ground.

9 The people left one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally, Jesus and the woman were there alone.

10 Jesus stood up and asked her, “Where is everyone? Isn't there anyone left to accuse you?”

11 “No sir,” the woman answered.
Then Jesus told her, “I am not going to accuse you either. You may go now, but don't sin anymore.”t

Jesus Is //the Light for the World

12  t Once again Jesus spoke to the people. This time he said, “I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won't be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life.”

13  t The Pharisees objected, “You are the only one speaking for yourself, and what you say isn't true!”

14 Jesus replied:
Even if I do speak for myself, what I say is true! I know where I came from and where I am going. But you don't know where I am from or where I am going. 15 You judge in the same way that everyone else does, but I don't judge anyone. 16 If I did judge, I would judge fairly, because I would not be doing it alone. The Father who sent me is here with me. 17 t Your Law requires two witnesses to prove that something is true.

18 I am one of my witnesses, and the Father who sent me is the other one.

19 “Where is your Father?” they asked.
“You don't know me or my Father!” Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would know my Father.”

20 Jesus said this while he was still teaching in the place where the temple treasures were stored. But no one arrested him, because his time had not yet come.t

You Cannot Go Where //I Am Going

21 Jesus also told them, “I am going away, and you will look for me. But you cannot go where I am going, and you will die with your sins unforgiven.”

22 The people asked, “Does he intend to kill himself? Is that what he means by saying we cannot go where he is going?”
23 Jesus answered, “You are from below, but I am from above. You belong to this world, but I don't.

24 This is why I said you will die with your sins unforgiven. If you don't have faith in me for who I am, t you will die, and your sins will not be forgiven.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked Jesus.
Jesus answered, “I am exactly who I told you at the beginning.

26 There is a lot more I could say to condemn you. But the one who sent me is truthful, and I tell the people of this world only what I have heard from him.”

27 No one understood that Jesus was talking to them about the Father.
28 Jesus went on to say, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, t you will know who I am. You will also know that I don't do anything on my own. I say only what my Father taught me.

29 The one who sent me is with me. I always do what pleases him, and he will never leave me.”

30 After Jesus said this, many of the people put their faith in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

32 t You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33  t They answered, “We are Abraham's children! We have never been anyone's slaves. How can you say we will be set free?”

34 Jesus replied:
I tell you for certain that anyone who sins is a slave of sin! 35 And slaves don't stay in the family forever, though the Son will always remain in the family. 36 If the Son gives you freedom, you are free! 37 I know that you are from Abraham's family. Yet you want to kill me, because my message isn't really in your hearts.

38 I am telling you what my Father has shown me, just as you are doing what your father has taught you.

Your Father Is the Devil

39 The people said to Jesus, “Abraham is our father!”
Jesus replied, “If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did. 40 Instead, you want to kill me for telling you the truth that God gave me. Abraham never did anything like that.

41 But you are doing exactly what your father does.”
“Don't accuse us of having someone else as our father!” they said. “We just have one father, and he is God.”

42 Jesus answered:
If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and now I am here. He sent me. I did not come on my own. 43 Why can't you understand what I am talking about? Can't you stand to hear what I am saying?

44 t Your father is the devil, and you do exactly what he wants. He has always been a murderer and a liar. There is nothing truthful about him. He speaks on his own, and everything he says is a lie. Not only is he a liar himself, but he is also the father of all lies.
45 Everything I have told you is true, and you still refuse to have faith in me. 46 Can any of you accuse me of sin? If you cannot, why won't you have faith in me? After all, I am telling you the truth.

47 Anyone who belongs to God will listen to his message. But you refuse to listen, because you don't belong to God.

Jesus and Abraham

48 The people told Jesus, “We were right to say that you are a Samaritant and that you have a demon in you!”
49 Jesus answered, “I don't have a demon in me. I honor my Father, and you refuse to honor me. 50 I don't want honor for myself. But there is one who wants me to be honored, and he is also the one who judges.

51 I tell you for certain that if you obey my words, you will never die.”
52 Then the people said, “Now we are sure that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and so are the prophets. How can you say that no one who obeys your words will ever die?

53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I honored myself, it would mean nothing. My Father is the one who honors me. You claim that he is your God, 55 even though you don't really know him. If I said I didn't know him, I would be a liar, just like all of you. But I know him, and I do what he says.

56 Your father Abraham was really glad to see me.”

57 “You are not even 50 years old!” they said. “How could you have seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that even before Abraham was, I was, and I am.”t 59 The people picked up stones to kill Jesus, but he hid and left the temple.
