La mujer sorprendida en adulterio

1 Pero Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos. 2 Al amanecer se presentó de nuevo en el *templo. Toda la gente se le acercó, y él se sentó a enseñarles. 3 Los *maestros de la ley y los *fariseos llevaron entonces a una mujer sorprendida en adulterio, y poniéndola en medio del grupo 4 le dijeron a Jesús:
—Maestro, a esta mujer se le ha sorprendido en el acto mismo de adulterio. 5 En la ley Moisés nos ordenó apedrear a tales mujeres. ¿Tú qué dices?
6 Con esta pregunta le estaban tendiendo una *trampa, para tener de qué acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y con el dedo comenzó a escribir en el suelo. 7 Y como ellos lo acosaban a preguntas, Jesús se incorporó y les dijo:
—Aquel de ustedes que esté libre de pecado, que tire la primera piedra. 8 E inclinándose de nuevo, siguió escribiendo en el suelo. 9 Al oír esto, se fueron retirando uno tras otro, comenzando por los más viejos, hasta dejar a Jesús solo con la mujer, que aún seguía allí. 10 Entonces él se incorporó y le preguntó:
—Mujer, ¿dónde están?s ¿Ya nadie te condena?
11 —Nadie, Señor.
—Tampoco yo te condeno. Ahora vete, y no vuelvas a pecar.

Validez del testimonio de Jesús

12 Una vez más Jesús se dirigió a la gente, y les dijo:
—Yo soy la luz del mundo. El que me sigue no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida. 13 —Tú te presentas como tu propio testigo —alegaron los *fariseos—, así que tu testimonio no es válido.
14 —Aunque yo sea mi propio testigo —repuso Jesús—, mi testimonio es válido, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy. Pero ustedes no saben de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy. 15 Ustedes juzgan según criterios *humanos; yo, en cambio, no juzgo a nadie. 16 Y si lo hago, mis juicios son válidos porque no los emito por mi cuenta sino en unión con el Padre que me envió. 17 En la ley de ustedes está escrito que el testimonio de dos personas es válido. 18 Uno de mis testigos soy yo mismo, y el Padre que me envió también da testimonio de mí.
19 —¿Dónde está tu padre?
—Si supieran quién soy yo, sabrían también quién es mi Padre. 20 Estas palabras las dijo Jesús en el lugar donde se depositaban las ofrendas, mientras enseñaba en el *templo. Pero nadie le echó mano porque aún no había llegado su tiempo.

Yo no soy de este mundo

21 De nuevo Jesús les dijo:
—Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán, pero en su pecado morirán. Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir. 22 Comentaban, por tanto, los judíos: «¿Acaso piensa suicidarse? ¿Será por eso que dice: “Adonde yo voy, ustedes no pueden ir”?»
23 —Ustedes son de aquí abajo —continuó Jesús—; yo soy de allá arriba. Ustedes son de este mundo; yo no soy de este mundo. 24 Por eso les he dicho que morirán en sus pecados, pues si no creen que yo soy el que afirmo ser,s en sus pecados morirán.
25 —¿Quién eres tú? —le preguntaron.
—En primer lugar, ¿qué tengo que explicarles?s —contestó Jesús—. 26 Son muchas las cosas que tengo que decir y juzgar de ustedes. Pero el que me envió es veraz, y lo que le he oído decir es lo mismo que le repito al mundo.
27 Ellos no entendieron que les hablaba de su Padre. 28 Por eso Jesús añadió:
—Cuando hayan levantado al Hijo del hombre, sabrán ustedes que yo soy, y que no hago nada por mi propia cuenta, sino que hablo conforme a lo que el Padre me ha enseñado. 29 El que me envió está conmigo; no me ha dejado solo, porque siempre hago lo que le agrada.
30 Mientras aún hablaba, muchos creyeron en él.

Los hijos de Abraham

31 Jesús se dirigió entonces a los judíos que habían creído en él, y les dijo:
—Si se mantienen fieles a mis enseñanzas, serán realmente mis discípulos; 32 y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.
33 —Nosotros somos descendientes de Abraham —le contestaron—, y nunca hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo puedes decir que seremos liberados?
34 —Ciertamente les aseguro que todo el que peca es esclavo del pecado —respondió Jesús—. 35 Ahora bien, el esclavo no se queda para siempre en la familia; pero el hijo sí se queda en ella para siempre. 36 Así que si el Hijo los libera, serán ustedes verdaderamente libres. 37 Yo sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abraham. Sin embargo, procuran matarme porque no está en sus planes aceptar mi palabra. 38 Yo hablo de lo que he visto en presencia del Padre; así también ustedes, hagan lo que del Padre han escuchado.
39 —Nuestro padre es Abraham —replicaron.
—Si fueran hijos de Abraham, harían lo mismo que él hizo. 40 Ustedes, en cambio, quieren matarme, ¡a mí, que les he expuesto la verdad que he recibido de parte de Dios! Abraham jamás haría tal cosa. 41 Las obras de ustedes son como las de su padre.
—Nosotros no somos hijos nacidos de prostitución —le reclamaron—. Un solo Padre tenemos, y es Dios mismo.

Los hijos del diablo

42 —Si Dios fuera su Padre —les contestó Jesús—, ustedes me amarían, porque yo he venido de Dios y aquí me tienen. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que él me envió. 43 ¿Por qué no entienden mi modo de hablar? Porque no pueden aceptar mi palabra. 44 Ustedes son de su padre, el diablo, cuyos deseos quieren cumplir. Desde el principio éste ha sido un asesino, y no se mantiene en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando miente, expresa su propia naturaleza, porque es un mentiroso. ¡Es el padre de la mentira! 45 Y sin embargo a mí, que les digo la verdad, no me creen. 46 ¿Quién de ustedes me puede probar que soy culpable de pecado? Si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen? 47 El que es de Dios escucha lo que Dios dice. Pero ustedes no escuchan, porque no son de Dios.

Declaración de Jesús acerca de sí mismo

48 —¿No tenemos razón al decir que eres un samaritano, y que estás endemoniado? —replicaron los judíos.
49 —No estoy poseído por ningún demonio —contestó Jesús—. Tan sólo honro a mi Padre; pero ustedes me deshonran a mí. 50 Yo no busco mi propia gloria; pero hay uno que la busca, y él es el juez. 51 Ciertamente les aseguro que el que cumple mi palabra, nunca morirá.
52 —¡Ahora estamos convencidos de que estás endemoniado! —exclamaron los judíos—. Abraham murió, y también los profetas, pero tú sales diciendo que si alguno guarda tu palabra, nunca morirá. 53 ¿Acaso eres tú mayor que nuestro padre Abraham? Él murió, y también murieron los profetas. ¿Quién te crees tú?
54 —Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo —les respondió Jesús—, mi gloria no significa nada. Pero quien me glorifica es mi Padre, el que ustedes dicen que es su Dios, 55 aunque no lo conocen. Yo, en cambio, sí lo conozco. Si dijera que no lo conozco, sería tan mentiroso como ustedes; pero lo conozco y cumplo su palabra. 56 Abraham, el padre de ustedes, se regocijó al pensar que vería mi día; y lo vio y se alegró.
57 —Ni a los cincuenta años llegas —le dijeron los judíos—, ¿y has visto a Abraham?
58 —Ciertamente les aseguro que, antes de que Abraham naciera, ¡yo soy!
59 Entonces los judíos tomaron piedras para arrojárselas, pero Jesús se escondió y salió inadvertido del templo.s

JOHN 8

1 but Jesus walked out to the Mount of Olives.

2 Then early the next morning he went to the temple. The people came to him, and he sat downt and started teaching them.
3 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses brought in a woman who had been caught in bed with a man who wasn't her husband. They made her stand in the middle of the crowd. 4 Then they said, “Teacher, this woman was caught sleeping with a man who isn't her husband.

5 t The Law of Moses teaches that a woman like this should be stoned to death! What do you say?”

6 They asked Jesus this question, because they wanted to test him and bring some charge against him. But Jesus simply bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger.
7  t They kept on asking Jesus about the woman. Finally, he stood up and said, “If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and throw the first stone at her!” 8 Once again he bent over and began writing on the ground.

9 The people left one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally, Jesus and the woman were there alone.

10 Jesus stood up and asked her, “Where is everyone? Isn't there anyone left to accuse you?”

11 “No sir,” the woman answered.
Then Jesus told her, “I am not going to accuse you either. You may go now, but don't sin anymore.”t

Jesus Is //the Light for the World

12  t Once again Jesus spoke to the people. This time he said, “I am the light for the world! Follow me, and you won't be walking in the dark. You will have the light that gives life.”

13  t The Pharisees objected, “You are the only one speaking for yourself, and what you say isn't true!”

14 Jesus replied:
Even if I do speak for myself, what I say is true! I know where I came from and where I am going. But you don't know where I am from or where I am going. 15 You judge in the same way that everyone else does, but I don't judge anyone. 16 If I did judge, I would judge fairly, because I would not be doing it alone. The Father who sent me is here with me. 17 t Your Law requires two witnesses to prove that something is true.

18 I am one of my witnesses, and the Father who sent me is the other one.

19 “Where is your Father?” they asked.
“You don't know me or my Father!” Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would know my Father.”

20 Jesus said this while he was still teaching in the place where the temple treasures were stored. But no one arrested him, because his time had not yet come.t

You Cannot Go Where //I Am Going

21 Jesus also told them, “I am going away, and you will look for me. But you cannot go where I am going, and you will die with your sins unforgiven.”

22 The people asked, “Does he intend to kill himself? Is that what he means by saying we cannot go where he is going?”
23 Jesus answered, “You are from below, but I am from above. You belong to this world, but I don't.

24 This is why I said you will die with your sins unforgiven. If you don't have faith in me for who I am, t you will die, and your sins will not be forgiven.”

25 “Who are you?” they asked Jesus.
Jesus answered, “I am exactly who I told you at the beginning.

26 There is a lot more I could say to condemn you. But the one who sent me is truthful, and I tell the people of this world only what I have heard from him.”

27 No one understood that Jesus was talking to them about the Father.
28 Jesus went on to say, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, t you will know who I am. You will also know that I don't do anything on my own. I say only what my Father taught me.

29 The one who sent me is with me. I always do what pleases him, and he will never leave me.”

30 After Jesus said this, many of the people put their faith in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

32 t You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33  t They answered, “We are Abraham's children! We have never been anyone's slaves. How can you say we will be set free?”

34 Jesus replied:
I tell you for certain that anyone who sins is a slave of sin! 35 And slaves don't stay in the family forever, though the Son will always remain in the family. 36 If the Son gives you freedom, you are free! 37 I know that you are from Abraham's family. Yet you want to kill me, because my message isn't really in your hearts.

38 I am telling you what my Father has shown me, just as you are doing what your father has taught you.

Your Father Is the Devil

39 The people said to Jesus, “Abraham is our father!”
Jesus replied, “If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did. 40 Instead, you want to kill me for telling you the truth that God gave me. Abraham never did anything like that.

41 But you are doing exactly what your father does.”
“Don't accuse us of having someone else as our father!” they said. “We just have one father, and he is God.”

42 Jesus answered:
If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and now I am here. He sent me. I did not come on my own. 43 Why can't you understand what I am talking about? Can't you stand to hear what I am saying?

44 t Your father is the devil, and you do exactly what he wants. He has always been a murderer and a liar. There is nothing truthful about him. He speaks on his own, and everything he says is a lie. Not only is he a liar himself, but he is also the father of all lies.
45 Everything I have told you is true, and you still refuse to have faith in me. 46 Can any of you accuse me of sin? If you cannot, why won't you have faith in me? After all, I am telling you the truth.

47 Anyone who belongs to God will listen to his message. But you refuse to listen, because you don't belong to God.

Jesus and Abraham

48 The people told Jesus, “We were right to say that you are a Samaritant and that you have a demon in you!”
49 Jesus answered, “I don't have a demon in me. I honor my Father, and you refuse to honor me. 50 I don't want honor for myself. But there is one who wants me to be honored, and he is also the one who judges.

51 I tell you for certain that if you obey my words, you will never die.”
52 Then the people said, “Now we are sure that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and so are the prophets. How can you say that no one who obeys your words will ever die?

53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I honored myself, it would mean nothing. My Father is the one who honors me. You claim that he is your God, 55 even though you don't really know him. If I said I didn't know him, I would be a liar, just like all of you. But I know him, and I do what he says.

56 Your father Abraham was really glad to see me.”

57 “You are not even 50 years old!” they said. “How could you have seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus answered, “I tell you for certain that even before Abraham was, I was, and I am.”t 59 The people picked up stones to kill Jesus, but he hid and left the temple.
