Jésus guérit un homme aveugle de naissance
1 En chemin, Jésus vit un homme qui était aveugle depuis sa naissance. 2 Ses disciples lui demandèrent : « Maître, pourquoi cet homme est-il né aveugle : à cause de son propre péché ou à cause du péché de ses parentst ? » 3 Jésus répondit : « Ce n’est ni à cause de son péché, ni à cause du péché de ses parents. Il est aveugle pour que l’œuvre de Dieu puisse se manifester en lui. 4 Pendant qu’il fait jour, nous devons accomplir les œuvres de celui qui m’a envoyé. La nuit s’approche, où personne ne peut travailler. 5 Pendant que je suis dans le monde, je suis la lumière du mondet. » 6 Après avoir dit ces mots, Jésus cracha par terre et fit un peu de boue avec sa salivet ; il frotta les yeux de l’aveugle avec cette boue 7 et lui dit : « Va te laver la figure à la piscine de Siloét. » – Ce nom signifie « Envoyé ». – L’aveugle y alla, se lava la figure et, quand il revint, il voyait ! 8 Ses voisins et ceux qui l’avaient vu mendier auparavant demandaient : « N’est-ce pas cet homme qui se tenait assis pour mendier ? » 9 Les uns disaient : « C’est lui. » D’autres disaient : « Non, ce n’est pas lui, mais il lui ressemble. » Et l’homme disait : « C’est bien moi. » 10 Ils lui demandèrent : « Comment donc tes yeux ont-ils été guéris ? » 11 Il répondit : « L’homme appelé Jésus a fait un peu de boue, il en a frotté mes yeux et m’a dit : “Va à Siloé te laver la figure.” J’y suis allé et, après m’être lavé, je voyais ! »
12 Ils lui demandèrent : « Où est cet homme ? » – « Je ne sais pas », répondit-il.Les Pharisiens interrogent l’aveugle guéri
13 On amena alors aux Pharisiens l’homme qui avait été aveugle. 14 Or, Jésus avait fait de la boue et lui avait guéri les yeux un jour de sabbat. 15 C’est pourquoi les Pharisiens, eux aussi, demandèrent à l’homme ce qui s’était passé pour qu’il voie maintenant. Il leur dit : « Il m’a mis un peu de boue sur les yeux, je me suis lavé la figure et maintenant je vois. » 16 Quelques Pharisiens disaient : « Celui qui a fait cela ne peut pas venir de Dieu, car il n’obéit pas à la loi du sabbat. » Mais d’autres répliquaient : « Comment un pécheur pourrait-il faire de tels signes miraculeux ? » Et ils étaient divisés entre eux.
17 Les Pharisiens demandèrent encore à l’aveugle guéri : « Et toi, que dis-tu de celui qui a guéri tes yeux ? » – « C’est un prophète », répondit-il.
18 Cependant, les chefs juifs ne voulaient pas croire qu’il avait été aveugle et que maintenant il voyait. C’est pourquoi ils convoquèrent ses parents 19 pour les interroger. Ils leur demandèrent : « Est-ce bien là votre fils ? Affirmez-vous qu’il est né aveugle ? Que s’est-il donc passé pour qu’il voie maintenant ? » 20 Les parents répondirent : « Nous savons que c’est notre fils et qu’il est né aveugle. 21 Mais nous ne savons pas ce qui s’est passé pour qu’il voie maintenant et nous ne savons pas non plus qui a guéri ses yeux. Interrogez-le : il est d’âge à répondre lui-même ! » 22 Ils parlèrent ainsi parce qu’ils avaient peur des chefs juifs. En effet, ceux-ci s’étaient déjà mis d’accord pour exclure de la synagogue toute personne qui affirmerait que Jésus est le Messie.
23 Voilà pourquoi les parents dirent : « Il est d’âge à répondre, interrogez-le ! »
24 Les Pharisiens appelèrent une seconde fois l’homme qui avait été aveugle et lui dirent : « Dis la vérité devant Dieu. Nous savons que cet homme est un pécheur. » 25 Il répondit : « Je ne sais pas s’il est pécheur ou non. Mais je sais une chose : j’étais aveugle et maintenant je vois. » 26 Ils lui demandèrent : « Que t’a-t-il fait ? Comment a-t-il guéri tes yeux ? » – 27 « Je vous l’ai déjà dit, répondit-il, mais vous ne m’avez pas écouté. Pourquoi voulez-vous me l’entendre dire encore une fois ? Peut-être désirez-vous, vous aussi, devenir ses disciples ? » 28 Ils l’injurièrent et dirent : « C’est toi qui es disciple de cet homme ! Nous, nous sommes disciples de Moïse. 29 Nous savons que Dieu a parlé à Moïse ; mais lui, nous ne savons même pas d’où il vient ! » 30 L’homme leur répondit : « Voilà bien ce qui est étonnant : vous ne savez pas d’où il vient et pourtant il a guéri mes yeux ! 31 Nous savons que Dieu n’écoute pas les pécheurs, mais qu’il écoute tout être qui le respecte et obéit à sa volontét. 32 On n’a jamais entendu dire que quelqu’un ait guéri les yeux d’une personne née aveugle. 33 Si cet homme ne venait pas de Dieu, il ne pourrait rien faire. »
34 Ils lui répondirent : « Tu es tout entier dans le péché depuis ta naissance et tu veux nous faire la leçon ? » Et ils le chassèrent de la synagoguet.L’aveuglement spirituel
35 Jésus apprit qu’ils l’avaient chassé. Il le rencontra et lui demanda : « Crois-tu au Fils de l’homme ? » – 36 « Dis-moi qui c’est, Maître, répondit l’homme, pour que je puisse croire en lui. » 37 Jésus lui dit : « Eh bien, tu le vois ; c’est lui qui te parle maintenant. » – 38 « Je crois, Seigneur », dit l’homme. Et il se mit à genoux devant Jésus. 39 Jésus dit alors : « Je suis venu dans ce monde pour qu’un jugement ait lieu : pour que les aveugles voient et que ceux qui voient deviennent aveugles. » 40 Quelques Pharisiens, qui se trouvaient près de lui, entendirent ces paroles et lui demandèrent : « Sommes-nous des aveugles, nous aussi ? » 41 Jésus leur répondit : « Si vous étiez aveugles, vous ne seriez pas coupables ; mais comme vous dites : “Nous voyons”, vous restez coupables. »

1 And as he passed by, he saw a man blind from his birth.2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?3 Jesus answered, Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.4 We must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.5 When I am in the world, I am the light of the world.6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and anointed his eyes with the clay,7 and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation, Sent). He went away therefore, and washed, and came seeing.8 The neighbors therefore, and they that saw him aforetime, that he was a beggar, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?9 Others said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he.10 They said therefore unto him, How then were thine eyes opened?11 He answered, The man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to Siloam, and wash: so I went away and washed, and I received sight.12 And they said unto him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.13 They bring to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.14 Now it was the sabbath on the day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.15 Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. And he said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.16 Some therefore of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he keepeth not the sabbath. But others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such signs? And there was division among them.17 They say therefore unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, in that he opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.18 The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,19 and asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? How then doth he now see?20 His parents answered and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:21 but how he now seeth, we know not; or who opened his eyes, we know not: ask him; he is of age; he shall speak for himself.22 These things said his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.24 So they called a second time the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is a sinner.25 He therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.26 They said therefore unto him, What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?27 He answered them, I told you even now, and ye did not hear; wherefore would ye hear it again? would ye also become his disciples?28 And they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses.29 We know that God hath spoken unto Moses: but as for this man, we know not whence he is.30 The man answered and said unto them, Why, herein is the marvel, that ye know not whence he is, and yet he opened mine eyes.31 We know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.32 Since the world began it was never heard that any one opened the eyes of a man born blind.33 If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and finding him, he said, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?36 He answered and said, And who is he, Lord, that I may believe on him?37 Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that speaketh with thee.38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.39 And Jesus said, For judgment came I into this world, that they that see not may see; and that they that see may become blind.40 Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye would have no sin: but now ye say, We see: your sin remaineth.
