Mannen som var fødd blind

1 Då Jesus kom gåande, fekk han sjå ein mann som hadde vore blind frå han var fødd. 2 Læresveinane spurde: «Rabbi, kven er det som har synda, han eller foreldra hans, sidan han vart fødd blind?» 3 t Jesus svara: «Verken han eller foreldra hans har synda. Men no kan Guds gjerningar bli openberra på han. 4 t Så lenge det er dag, må vi gjera hans gjerningar som har sendt meg. Det kjem ei natt då ingen kan arbeida. 5 t Så lenge eg er i verda, er eg lyset i verda.» 6 t Då han hadde sagt det, spytta han på jorda og laga til litt leire av spyttet og smurde på auga til mannen.

7 tt Så sa han: «Gå og vask deg i Siloa-dammen!» Siloa tyder utsend. Mannen gjekk dit og vaska seg, og då han kom att, kunne han sjå.
8 Naboane og dei som før hadde sett at han var tiggar, sa då: «Er ikkje dette han som sat og tigga?» 9 «Jau, det er han», sa somme. Andre sa: «Nei, men han liknar.» Sjølv sa han: «Det er eg.» 10 «Korleis vart auga dine opna?» spurde dei. 11 Han svara: «Den mannen som heiter Jesus, laga til litt leire og smurde på auga mine og sa: ‘Gå til Siloa-dammen og vask deg!’ Eg gjekk dit, og då eg hadde vaska meg, kunne eg sjå.»

12 «Kvar er denne mannen?» spurde dei. «Eg veit ikkje», svara han.
13 Så førte dei mannen som hadde vore blind, til farisearane. 14 tt Det var sabbat den dagen Jesus hadde laga til leire og opna auga hans. 15 Også farisearane spurde korleis han hadde fått synet. «Han la leire på auga mine», svara mannen, «så vaska eg meg, og no ser eg.» 16 t Då sa nokre av farisearane: «Denne mannen er ikkje frå Gud sidan han ikkje held sabbaten.» Andre sa: «Korleis kan eit syndig menneske gjera slike teikn?» Det vart usemje mellom dei om dette.

17 t Så spurde dei på nytt han som hadde vore blind: «Kva meiner du om han, sidan det var dine auge han opna?» «Han er ein profet», svara mannen.
18 Jødane ville ikkje tru at han hadde vore blind og no kunne sjå. Difor sende dei bod på foreldra til han som hadde fått synet att, 19 og spurde dei: «Er dette son dykkar, han som de seier er fødd blind? Korleis har det seg då at han kan sjå?» 20 Foreldra svara: «Vi veit at dette er vår son, og at han er fødd blind. 21 Men korleis det har seg at han no kan sjå, det veit vi ikkje, og heller ikkje veit vi kven som har opna auga hans. Spør han sjølv! Han er gammal nok til å svara for seg.» 22 tt Dette sa dei fordi dei var redde jødane. For jødane hadde alt vorte einige om at den som vedkjende at Jesus var Messias, skulle støytast ut av synagogen.

23 Difor sa foreldra hans: «Han er gammal nok, spør han sjølv.»
24  t Andre gongen henta dei han som hadde vore blind, og sa til han: «Gjev Gud æra! Vi veit at dette mennesket er ein syndar.» 25 Han svara: «Om han er ein syndar, det veit eg ikkje. Men dette veit eg: Eg var blind, og no ser eg.» 26 «Kva gjorde han med deg?» spurde dei. «Korleis opna han auga dine?» 27 «Eg har alt sagt dykk det», sa han, «og de ville ikkje høyra på meg. Kvifor vil de høyra det om att? Kanskje vil de òg bli læresveinane hans?» 28 Dei skjelte han ut og sa: «Du er læresveinen hans, vi er læresveinane til Moses. 29 Vi veit at Gud har tala til Moses, men vi veit ikkje kvar dette mennesket er ifrå.» 30 «Det er då underleg», sa mannen, «at de ikkje veit kvar han er ifrå, endå han har opna auga mine. 31 t Vi veit at Gud ikkje høyrer på syndarar, men han høyrer på den som har gudsfrykt og gjer etter hans vilje. 32 Så lenge verda har stått, har ein aldri høyrt om at nokon har opna auga på ein som er fødd blind. 33 t Var ikkje denne mannen frå Gud, kunne han ingen ting gjera.»

34 Dei svara: «Du er fødd syndar tvers igjennom, og du vil læra oss?» Så kasta dei han ut.
35 Jesus fekk høyra at dei hadde kasta han ut, og då han møtte mannen, spurde han: «Trur du på Menneskesonen?» 36 Mannen svara: «Kven er han då, gode herre, så eg kan tru på han?» 37 t «Du har sett han», sa Jesus. «Det er han som no snakkar med deg.»

38 «Eg trur, Herre», sa mannen. Og han tilbad han.
39  t Då sa Jesus: «Til dom er eg komen til denne verda, så dei som ikkje ser, skal sjå, og dei som ser, skal bli blinde.» 40 t Nokre av farisearane som stod der, høyrde dette og sa til han: «Kanskje vi òg er blinde?» 41 t Jesus svara: «Var de blinde, hadde de inga synd. Men no seier de ‘Vi ser!’ Difor blir synda dykkar ståande.»

Jesus //Heals a Man Born Blind

1 As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind since birth.

2 Jesus' disciples asked, “Teacher, why was this man born blind? Was it because he or his parents sinned?”
3 “No, it wasn't!” Jesus answered. “But because of his blindness, you will see God work a miracle for him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do what the one who sent me wants me to do. When night comes, no one can work.

5 t While I am in the world, I am the light for the world.”
6 After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground. He made some mud and smeared it on the man's eyes.

7 Then he said, “Go wash off the mud in Siloam Pool.” The man went and washed in Siloam, which means “One Who Is Sent.” When he had washed off the mud, he could see.
8 The man's neighbors and the people who had seen him begging wondered if he really could be the same man.

9 Some of them said he was the same beggar, while others said he only looked like him. But he told them, “I am that man.”

10 “Then how can you see?” they asked.

11 He answered, “Someone named Jesus made some mud and smeared it on my eyes. He told me to go and wash it off in Siloam Pool. When I did, I could see.”

12 “Where is he now?” they asked.
“I don't know,” he answered.

The Pharisees Try To Find Out //What Happened

15 They asked him how he was able to see, and he answered, “Jesus made some mud and smeared it on my eyes. Then after I washed it off, I could see.”

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus doesn't come from God. If he did, he would not break the law of the Sabbath.”
Others asked, “How could someone who is a sinner work such a miracle?”t
Since the Pharisees could not agree among themselves,

17 they asked the man, “What do you say about this one who healed your eyes?”
“He is a prophet!” the man told them.
18 But the Jewish leaders would not believe that the man had once been blind. They sent for his parents

19 and asked them, “Is this the son that you said was born blind? How can he now see?”
20 The man's parents answered, “We are certain that he is our son, and we know that he was born blind.

21 But we don't know how he got his sight or who gave it to him. Ask him! He is old enough to speak for himself.”

22-23 The man's parents said this because they were afraid of their leaders. The leaders had already agreed that no one was to have anything to do with anyone who said Jesus was the Messiah.

24 The leaders called the man back and said, “Swear by God to tell the truth! We know that Jesus is a sinner.”

25 The man replied, “I don't know if he is a sinner or not. All I know is that I used to be blind, but now I can see!”

26 “What did he do to you?” they asked. “How did he heal your eyes?”

27 The man answered, “I have already told you once, and you refused to listen. Why do you want me to tell you again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”
28 The leaders insulted the man and said, “You are his follower! We are followers of Moses.

29 We are sure God spoke to Moses, but we don't even know where Jesus comes from.”
30 “How strange!” the man replied. “He healed my eyes, and yet you don't know where he comes from. 31 We know that God listens only to people who love and obey him. God doesn't listen to sinners. 32 And this is the first time in history anyone has ever given sight to someone born blind.

33 Jesus could not do anything unless he came from God.”

34 The leaders told the man, “You have been a sinner since the day you were born! Do you think you can teach us anything?” Then they said, “You can never come back into any of our synagogues!”

35 When Jesus heard what had happened, he went and found the man. Then Jesus asked, “Do you have faith in the Son of Man?”

36 He replied, “Sir, if you will tell me who he is, I will put my faith in him.”

37 “You have already seen him,” Jesus answered, “and right now he is talking with you.”

38 The man said, “Lord, I put my faith in you!” Then he worshiped Jesus.

39 Jesus told him, “I came to judge the people of this world. I am here to give sight to the blind and to make blind everyone who can see.”

40 When the Pharisees heard Jesus say this, they asked, “Are we blind?”
41 Jesus answered, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty. But now that you claim to see, you will keep on being guilty.”
