ヨナ書 1

一

1 アミタイの子ヨナに、神様から次のようなお告げがありました。
2 　「あの大都市ニネベへ行って、神がこう語ると告げよ。　『わたしはおまえたちを滅ぼす。　おまえたちの悪行の数々が、山のように積もり、その悪臭が天にまでただよって来たからだ。』
3 　ところが、ヨナは行くことをいやがり、神様の前から逃げ出して海岸の方へ行き、ヨッパの港へ出たのです。　ちょうど、タルシシュ行きの船が出航するところでした。　船賃を払って船に乗り込んだヨナは、神様から身を隠そうと、暗い船底に降りて行きました。
4 　ところが、航海が始まると、突然のように神様は嵐を起こし、その船めがけて突風を吹きつけました。　船は今にも沈みそうです。　5 身の危険を感じた水夫たちは、必死の思いで、自分の信じている神々に助けを求めました。　また、なんとか船を軽くしようと、積み荷を海に捨てました。　その間、ヨナは船底でぐっすり眠り込んでいたのです。
6 　あきれた船長は船底に降りて行って、どやしつけました。　「おい！　どういうつもりだ、こんな時に眠りこけて。　さっさと起きて、おまえの神様に祈ったらどうだ。　そうすれば、お恵みで助かるかもしれんぞ！」
7 　乗組員はくじを引くことにしました。　神々を怒らせて、こんな恐ろしい嵐を引き起こした張本人はだれか、見つけようというのです。　くじはヨナに当たりました。
8 　「いったい何をしでかしたんだ。　こんなに恐ろしい嵐を起こすとは？　えっ！　おまえさん何者だい？　仕事は？　どっから来た？どこの者だ。」
9-10 「ユダヤ人です。　この地と海とをお造りになった天の神様を信じ、拝んでいる者です。」　それから、その神様から逃げ回っているわけを話しました。
人々は話を聞くと、ますます恐ろしくなりました。　「何でそんなことをしたんだ？　11 ああ、この嵐を静めるために、おまえさんをどうすりゃいいんだろう」と叫ぶように言いました。　海はいっそう荒れ狂ってきたからです。
12 「どうか、私を海に投げ込んでください。　そうすれば、静まるでしょう。　この嵐も、私のせいなのですから。」
13 　それでも、なんとか陸に近づこうと必死にこぎましたが、どうにもなりません。　突風が荒れ狂い、まともに吹きつけるのです。　14 とうとう、人々はヨナが仕えている神様に大声で祈りました。　「ああ神様。　お願いでございます。　この男のために、おれたちまで巻き添えにしないでください。　この男を海に投げ込みますが、どうぞ、おれたちを罰しないでください。　おれたちの責任じゃありません。特別なわけがあって、神様がこの男に嵐を見舞わせているのですから。」
15 　彼らはヨナを荒れ狂う海に投げ込みました。　すると、どうでしょう。　嵐はぴたりと収まったではありませんか。
16 　人々は神様の前に恐れをなし、いけにえをささげて、ヨナの信じていた神様に仕えることを誓いました。
17 　ところで、神様は大きな魚に、ヨナをのみ込ませました。　ヨナは三日三晩、魚の腹の中にいたのです。

Jonah 1

1 Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.4 But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.14 Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.16 Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.17 And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
