Jonah 1

1 Now the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.4 But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it unto them. But Jonah was gone down into the innermost parts of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.6 So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.7 And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who hath made the sea and the dry land.10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.11 Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous.12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.14 Wherefore they cried unto Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.15 So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.16 Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows.17 And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 1

Jonah Tries to Run from the Lord

1 The Lord saidt to Jonah son of Amittai,t2 “Go immediatelyt to Nineveh,s thatt large capitalt city,t and announce judgment againstt its peoplet because their wickednesss has come to my attention.”t3 Instead, Jonah immediatelyt headed off to Tarshisht to escapet from the commission of the Lord.ts He traveledts to Joppas and found a merchant ship headingt to Tarshish.t So he paid the faret and went aboardt it to go with themt to Tarshisht far away from the Lord.t4 Butt the Lord hurledt a powerfult wind on the sea. Such a violentt tempest arose on the sea thatt the ship threatened to break up!t5 The sailors were so afraid that each cried outt to his own godt and they flungt the ship’s cargot overboardt to make the ship lighter.t Jonah, meanwhile,t had gone downt into the holdt below deck,t had lain down, and was sound asleep.t6 The ship’s captain approached him and said, “What are you doing asleep?t Get up! Cry outts to your god! Perhaps your godt might take notice of ust so that we might not die!”7 The sailors said to one another,t “Come on, let’s cast lotss to find outs whose fault it is that this disaster has overtaken us.t” So they cast lots, and Jonah was singled out.t8 They said to him, “Tell us, whose fault is it that this disaster has overtaken us?t What’s your occupation? Where do you come from? What’s your country? And who are your people?”ts9 He said to them, “I am a Hebrew! And I worshipt the Lord,ts the God of heaven,t who made the sea and the dry land.”10 Hearing this,t the men became even more afraidt and said to him, “What have you done?” (The men said this because they knew that he was trying to escapet from the Lord,s because he had previously told them.t)11 Because the storm was growing worse and worse,t they said to him, “What should we do to you to maket the sea calm downt for us?”12 He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea to make the sea quiet down,t because I know it’s my fault you are in this severe storm.”13 Instead, they tried to rows back to land,s but they were not able to do sot because the storm kept growing worse and worse.t14 So they cried out to the Lord, “Oh, please, Lord, don’t let us die on account of this man! Don’t hold us guilty of shedding innocent blood.t After all, you, Lord, have done just as you pleased.”t15 So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped raging.

16 The men feared the Lords greatly,t and earnestly vowedt to offer lavish sacrificest to the Lord.t
17 s The Lord sentt a huget fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.
