Josué 2

1 Y Josué, hijo de Nun, envió secretamente desde Sitim a dos espías, diciendo: Id, reconoced la tierra, especialmente Jericó. Fueron, pues, y entraron en la casa de una ramera que se llamaba Rahab, y allí se hospedaron.2 Y se le dio aviso al rey de Jericó, diciendo: He aquí, unos hombres de los hijos de Israel han venido aquí esta noche para reconocer toda la tierra.3 Entonces el rey de Jericó mandó decir a Rahab: Saca a los hombres que han venido a ti, que han entrado en tu casa, porque han venido para reconocer toda la tierra.4 Pero la mujer había tomado a los dos hombres y los había escondido, y dijo: Sí, los hombres vinieron a mí, pero yo no sabía de dónde eran.5 Y sucedió que a la hora de cerrar la puerta, al oscurecer, los hombres salieron; no sé adónde fueron. Id de prisa tras ellos, que los alcanzaréis.6 Pero ella los había hecho subir al terrado, y los había escondido entre los tallos de lino que había puesto en orden en el terrado.

7 Y ellos los persiguieron por el camino al Jordán hasta los vados, y tan pronto como los que los perseguían habían salido, fue cerrada la puerta.
8 Y antes que se acostaran, ella subió al terrado donde ellos estaban, 9 y dijo a los hombres: Sé que el Señor os ha dado la tierra, y que el terror vuestro ha caído sobre nosotros, y que todos los habitantes de la tierra se han acobardado ante vosotros.10 Porque hemos oído cómo el Señor secó el agua del mar Rojo delante de vosotros cuando salisteis de Egipto, y de lo que hicisteis a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, a Sehón y a Og, a quienes destruisteis por completo.11 Y cuando lo oímos, se acobardó nuestro corazón, no quedando ya valor en hombre alguno por causa de vosotros; porque el Señor vuestro Dios, El es Dios arriba en los cielos y abajo en la tierra.12 Ahora pues, juradme por el Señor, ya que os he tratado con bondad, que vosotros trataréis con bondad a la casa de mi padre, y dadme una promesa segura,13 que dejaréis vivir a mi padre y a mi madre, a mis hermanos y a mis hermanas, con todos los suyos, y que libraréis nuestras vidas de la muerte.

14 Y los hombres le dijeron: Nuestra vida responderá por la vuestra, si no reveláis nuestro propósito; y sucederá que cuando el Señor nos dé la tierra, te trataremos con bondad y lealtad.
15 Entonces ella los hizo descender con una cuerda por la ventana, porque su casa estaba en la muralla de la ciudad, y ella vivía en la muralla.16 Y les dijo: Id a la región montañosa, no sea que los perseguidores os encuentren, y escondeos allí por tres días hasta que los perseguidores regresen. Entonces podéis seguir vuestro camino.17 Y los hombres le dijeron: Nosotros quedaremos libres de este juramento que nos has hecho jurarte,18 a menos que, cuando entremos en la tierra, ates este cordón de hilo escarlata a la ventana por la cual nos dejas bajar, y reúnas contigo en la casa a tu padre y a tu madre, a tus hermanos y a toda la casa de tu padre.19 Y sucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de tu casa a la calle, su sangre caerá sobre su propia cabeza, y quedaremos libres. Pero la sangre de cualquiera que esté en la casa contigo caerá sobre nuestra cabeza si alguien pone su mano sobre él.20 Pero si divulgas nuestro propósito, quedaremos libres del juramento que nos has hecho jurar.

21 Y ella respondió: Conforme a vuestras palabras, así sea. Y los envió, y se fueron; y ella ató el cordón escarlata a la ventana.
22 Y ellos se fueron y llegaron a la región montañosa, y permanecieron allí por tres días, hasta que los perseguidores regresaron. Y los perseguidores los habían buscado por todo el camino, pero no los habían encontrado.23 Entonces los dos hombres regresaron y bajaron de la región montañosa, y pasaron y vinieron a Josué, hijo de Nun, y le contaron todo lo que les había acontecido.24 Y dijeron a Josué: Ciertamente, el Señor ha entregado toda la tierra en nuestras manos, y además, todos los habitantes de la tierra se han acobardado ante nosotros.

Joshua 2

Joshua Sends Spies into the Land

1 Joshua son of Nun sent two spies out from Shittim secretly and instructed them:t “Find out what you can about the land, especially Jericho.”ts They stopped at the house of a prostitute named Rahab and spent the night there.t2 The king of Jericho received this report: “Note well!t Israelite men have come here tonightt to spy on the land.”3 So the king of Jericho sent this order to Rahab:t “Turn overt the men who came to yout – the ones who came to your houset – for they have come to spy on the whole land!”4 But the woman hid the two ment and replied, “Yes, these men were clients of mine,t but I didn’t know where they came from.5 When it was time to shut the city gate for the night, the men left.t I don’t know where they were heading. Chase after them quickly, for you have time to catch them!”6 (Now she had taken them up to the roof and had hidden them in the stalks of flax she had spread outt on the roof.)

7 Meanwhilet the king’s men tried to find them on the road to the Jordan Rivert near the fords.t The city gate was shut as soon as they set out in pursuit of them.t
8 Now before the spiest went to sleep, Rahabt went upt to the roof.9 She said to the men, “I know the Lord is handing this land over to you.t We are absolutely terrified of you,t and all who live in the land are cringing beforet you.t10 For we heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you left Egypt and how you annihilated the two Amorite kings, Sihon and Og, on the other side of the Jordan.t11 When we heard the news we lost our courage and no one could even breathe for fear of you.t For the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below!12 So now, promise me this with an oath sworn in the Lord’s name.ts Because I have shown allegiance to you, show allegiance to my family.t Give me a solemn pledget13 that you will spare the lives of my father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all who belong to them, and rescue ust from death.”

14 The men said to her, “If yout die, may we die too!t If you do not report what we’ve been up to,t then, when the Lord hands the land over to us, we will show unswerving allegiancet to you.”t
15 Then Rahabt let them down by a ropes through the window. (Hert house was built as part of the city wall; she lived in the wall.)s16 She told them, “Headt to the hill country, so the ones chasing you don’t find you.t Hide from them there for three days, long enough for those chasing yout to return. Then you can be on your way.”17 The men said to her, “We are not bound by this oath you made us swear unless the following conditions are met:t18 When we invade the landt, tie this red ropet in the window through which you let us down, and gather together in your house your father, mother, brothers, and all who live in your father’s house.t19 Anyone who leaves your house will be responsible for his own death – we are innocent in that case!t But if anyone with you in the house is harmed, we will be responsible.t20 If you should report what we’ve been up to,t we are not bound by this oath you made us swear.”21 She said, “I agree to these conditions.”t She sent them on their wayt and then tied the red rope in the window.22 They wentt to the hill country and stayed there for three days, long enough for those chasing themt to return. Their pursuerst looked all along the way but did not find them.t23 Then the two men returned – they came down from the hills, crossed the river,t came to Joshua son of Nun, and reported to him all they had discovered.

24 They told Joshua, “Surely the Lord is handing over all the land to us!t All who live in the land are cringing before us!”t
