Giosué 24

1 Giosuè adunò pure tutte le tribù d’Israele in Sichem, e convocò gli anziani d’Israele, i capi, i giudici e gli ufficiali del popolo, i quali si presentarono davanti a Dio.2 E Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: "Così parla l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: I vostri padri, come Terah padre d’Abrahamo e padre di Nahor, abitarono anticamente di là dal fiume, e servirono ad altri dèi.3 E io presi il padre vostro Abrahamo di là dal fiume, e gli feci percorrere tutto il paese di Canaan; moltiplicai la sua progenie, e gli diedi Isacco.4 E ad Isacco diedi Giacobbe ed Esaù, e assegnai ad Esaù il possesso della montagna di Seir, e Giacobbe e i suoi figliuoli scesero in Egitto.5 Poi mandai Mosè ed Aaronne, e colpii l’Egitto coi prodigi che feci in mezzo ad esso; e dopo ciò, ve ne trassi fuori.6 Trassi dunque fuor dall’Egitto i vostri padri, e voi arrivaste al mare. Gli Egiziani inseguirono i vostri padri con carri e cavalieri fino al mar Rosso.7 Quelli gridarono all’Eterno, ed egli pose delle fitte tenebre fra voi e gli Egiziani; poi fece venir sopra loro il mare, che li ricoperse; e gli occhi vostri videro quel ch’io feci agli Egiziani. Poi dimoraste lungo tempo nel deserto.8 Io vi condussi quindi nel paese degli Amorei, che abitavano di là dal Giordano; essi combatterono contro di voi, e io li diedi nelle vostre mani; voi prendeste possesso del loro paese, e io li distrussi d’innanzi a voi.9 Poi Balak figliuolo di Tsippor, re di Moab, si levò a muover guerra ad Israele; e mandò a chiamare Balaam, figliuolo di Beor, perché vi maledicesse;10 ma io non volli dare ascolto a Balaam; egli dovette benedirvi, e vi liberai dalle mani di Balak.11 E passaste il Giordano, e arrivaste a Gerico; gli abitanti di Gerico, gli Amorei, i Ferezei, i Cananei, gli Hittei, i Ghirgasei, gli Hivvei e i Gebusei combatteron contro di voi, e io li diedi nelle vostre mani.12 E mandai davanti a voi i calabroni, che li scacciarono d’innanzi a voi, com’era avvenuto dei due re Amorei: non fu per la tua spada ne per il tuo arco.13 E vi diedi una terra che voi non avevate lavorata, delle città che non avevate costruite; voi abitate in esse e mangiate del frutto delle vigne e degli uliveti che non avete piantati.

14 Or dunque temete l’Eterno, e servitelo con integrità e fedeltà; togliete via gli dèi ai quali i vostri padri servirono di là dal fiume, e in Egitto, e servite all’Eterno.

15 E se vi par mal fatto servire all’Eterno, scegliete oggi a chi volete servire: o agli dèi ai quali i vostri padri servirono di là dal fiume, o agli dèi degli Amorei, nel paese de’ quali abitate; quanto a me e alla casa mia, serviremo all’Eterno".16 Allora il popolo rispose e disse: "Lungi da noi l’abbandonare l’Eterno per servire ad altri dèi!17 Poiché l’Eterno, il nostro Dio, è quegli che ha fatto salir noi e i padri nostri fuor dal paese d’Egitto, dalla casa di schiavitù, che ha fatto quei grandi miracoli dinanzi agli occhi nostri, e ci ha protetti per tutto il viaggio che abbiam fatto, e in mezzo a tutti i popoli fra i quali siamo passati;18 e l’Eterno ha cacciato d’innanzi a noi tutti questi popoli, e gli Amorei che abitavano il paese, anche noi serviremo all’Eterno, perch’egli e il nostro Dio".19 E Giosuè disse al popolo: "Voi non potrete servire all’Eterno, perch’egli è un Dio santo, e un Dio geloso; egli non perdonerà le vostre trasgressioni e i vostri peccati.20 Quando abbandonerete l’Eterno e servirete dèi stranieri, egli vi si volterà contro, vi farà del male e vi consumerà, dopo avervi fatto tanto bene".21 E il popolo disse a Giosuè: "No! No! Noi serviremo l’Eterno".22 E Giosuè disse al popolo: "Voi siete testimoni contro voi stessi, che vi siete scelto l’Eterno per servirgli!" Quelli risposero: "Siam testimoni!"23 E Giosuè: "Togliete dunque via gli dei stranieri che sono in mezzo a voi, e inclinate il cuor vostro all’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio d’Israele!"24 Il popolo rispose a Giosuè: "L’Eterno, il nostro Dio, è quello che serviremo, e alla sua voce ubbidiremo!"25 Così Giosuè fermò in quel giorno un patto col popolo, e gli diede delle leggi e delle prescrizioni a Sichem.

26 Poi Giosuè scrisse queste cose nel libro della legge di Dio; e prese una gran pietra e la rizzò quivi sotto la quercia ch’era presso il luogo consacrato all’Eterno.27 E Giosuè disse a tutto il popolo: "Ecco, questa pietra sarà una testimonianza contro di noi; perch’essa ha udito tutte le parole che l’Eterno ci ha dette; essa servirà quindi da testimonio contro di voi, affinché non rinneghiate il vostro Dio".28 Poi Giosuè rimandò il popolo, ognuno alla sua eredità.

29 E, dopo queste cose, avvenne che Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, servo dell’Eterno, mori in età di centodieci anni,30 e lo seppellirono nel territorio di sua proprietà a Timnat-Serah, che è nella contrada montuosa di Efraim, al nord della montagna di Gaash.31 E Israele servì all’Eterno durante tutta la vita di Giosuè e durante tutta la vita degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè, e che aveano conoscenza di tutte le opere che l’Eterno avea fatte per Israele.

32 E le ossa di Giuseppe, che i figliuoli d’Israele avean portate dall’Egitto, le seppellirono a Sichem, nella parte di campo che Giacobbe avea comprata dai figliuoli di Hemor, padre di Sichem, per cento pezzi di danaro; e i figliuoli di Giuseppe le avean ricevute nella loro eredità.33 Poi morì anche Eleazar, figliuolo di Aaronne, e lo seppellirono a Ghibeah di Fineas, ch’era stata data al suo figliuolo Fineas, nella contrada montuosa di Efraim.

Israel Renews its Commitment to the Lord

1 Joshua assembled all the Israelite tribes at Shechem. He summoned Israel’s elders, rulers, judges, and leaders, and they appeared before God.2 Joshua told all the people, “Here is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘In the distant past your ancestorst lived beyond the Euphrates River,t including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshipedt other gods,3 but I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphratest and brought him intot the entire land of Canaan. I made his descendants numerous; I gave him Isaac,4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I assigned Mount Seir,t while Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.5 I sent Moses and Aaron, and I struck Egypt down when I intervened in their land.t Then I brought you out.6 When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you arrived at the sea. The Egyptians chased your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.7 Your fatherst cried out for help to the Lord; he made the area between you and the Egyptians dark,t and then drowned them in the sea.t You witnessed with your very own eyest what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness for a long time.t8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought with you, but I handed them over to you; you conqueredt their land and I destroyed them from before you.9 Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, launched an attackt against Israel. He summonedt Balaam son of Beor to call down judgmentt on you.10 I refused to respond to Balaam; he keptt prophesying good things aboutt you, and I rescued you from his power.t11 You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.s The leaderst of Jericho, as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, fought with you, but I handed them over to you.12 I sent terrort ahead of you to drive out before you the twot Amorite kings. I gave you the victory; it was not by your swords or bows.t

13 I gave you a land int which you had not worked hard; you took up residence in cities you did not build and you are eating the produce oft vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.’
14 Nows obeyt the Lord and worshipt him with integrity and loyalty. Put aside the gods your ancestorst worshipedt beyond the Euphratest and in Egypt and worshipt the Lord.

15 If you have no desiret to worshipt the Lord, choose today whom you will worship,t whether it be the gods whom your ancestorst worshipedt beyond the Euphrates,t or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my familyt will worshipt the Lord!”
16 The people responded, “Far be it from us to abandon the Lord so we cant worshipt other gods!17 For the Lord our God took us and our fathers out of slaveryt in the land of Egyptt and performed these awesome miraclest before our very eyes. He continually protected us as we traveled and when we passed through nations.t

18 The Lord drove out from before us all the nations, including the Amorites who lived in the land. So we too will worshipt the Lord, for he is our God!”
19 Joshua warnedt the people, “You will not keep worshipingt the Lord, fors he is a holy God.t He is a jealous God who will not forgivets your rebellion or your sins.

20 Ift you abandon the Lord and worshipt foreign gods, he will turn against you;t he will bring disaster on you and destroy you,t though he once treated you well.”t
21 The people said to Joshua, “No! We really willt worshipt the Lord!”22 Joshua said to the people, “Do you agree to be witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to worship the Lord?”t They replied, “We are witnesses!”s

23 Joshua said,t “Now put aside the foreign gods that are among you and submit tot the Lord God of Israel.”

24 The people said to Joshua, “We will worshipt the Lord our God and obey him.”t
25 That day Joshua drew up an agreementt for the people, and he established rules and regulationst for them in Shechem.26 Joshua wrote these words in the Law Scroll of God. He then took a large stone and set it up there under the oak tree near the Lord’s shrine.27 Joshua said to all the people, “Look, this stone will be a witness against you, for it has heard everything the Lord said to us.t It will be a witness against you ift you deny your God.”

28 When Joshua dismissed the people, they went to their allotted portions of land.t

An Era Ends

29 After all thist Joshua son of Nun, the Lord’s servant, died at the age of one hundred ten.30 They buried him in his allotted territoryt in Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

31 Israel worshipedt the Lord throughout Joshua’s lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive.t These men had experienced firsthand everything the Lord had done for Israel.t

32 The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the part of the field that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money.t So it became the inheritance of the tribe of Joseph.t

33 Eleazar son of Aaron died, and they buried him in Gibeah in the hill country of Ephraim, where his son Phinehas had been assigned land.t
