Josué 24

Renovación del pacto en Siquén

1 Josué reunió a todas las tribus de Israel en Siquén. Allí convocó a todos los jefes, líderes, jueces y oficiales del pueblo. Todos se reunieron en presencia de Dios. 2 Josué se dirigió a todo el pueblo, y le exhortó:
—Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Hace mucho tiempo, sus antepasados, Téraj y sus hijos Abraham y Najor, vivían al otro lado del río Éufrates, y adoraban a otros dioses. 3 Pero yo tomé de ese lugar a Abraham, antepasado de ustedes, lo conduje por toda la tierra de Canaán y le di una descendencia numerosa. Primero le di un hijo, Isaac; 4 y a Isaac le di dos hijos, Jacob y Esaú. A Esaú le entregué la serranía de Seír, en tanto que Jacob y sus hijos descendieron a Egipto.
5 » ”Tiempo después, envié a Moisés y Aarón, y herí con plagas a Egipto hasta que los saqué a ustedes de allí. 6 Cuando saqué de ese país a sus antepasados, ustedes llegaron al *Mar Rojo y los egipcios los persiguieron con sus carros de guerra y su caballería. 7 Sus antepasados clamaron al Señor, y él interpuso oscuridad entre ellos y los egipcios. El Señor hizo que el mar cayera sobre éstos y los cubriera. Ustedes fueron testigos de lo que les hice a los egipcios. Después de esto, sus antepasados vivieron en el desierto durante mucho tiempo. 8 A ustedes los traje a la tierra de los amorreos, los que vivían al este del río Jordán. Cuando ellos les hicieron la guerra, yo los entregué en sus manos; ustedes fueron testigos de cómo los destruí para que ustedes poseyeran su tierra. 9 Y cuando Balac, hijo de Zipor y rey de Moab, se dispuso a presentarles combate, él envió al profeta Balán hijo de Beor para que los maldijera. 10 Pero yo no quise escuchar a Balán, por lo cual él los bendijo una y otra vez, y así los salvé a ustedes de su poder. 11 Finalmente, cruzaron el río Jordán y llegaron a Jericó, cuyos habitantes pelearon contra ustedes. Lo mismo hicieron los amorreos, ferezeos, cananeos, hititas, gergeseos, heveos y jebuseos. Pero yo los entregué en sus manos. 12 No fueron ustedes quienes, con sus espadas y arcos, derrotaron a los dos reyes amorreos; fui yo quien por causa de ustedes envié tábanos, para que expulsaran de la tierra a sus enemigos. 13 A ustedes les entregué una tierra que no trabajaron y ciudades que no construyeron. Vivieron en ellas y se alimentaron de viñedos y olivares que no plantaron.”
14 »Por lo tanto, ahora ustedes entréguense al Señor y sírvanle fielmente. Desháganse de los dioses que sus antepasados adoraron al otro lado del río Éufrates y en Egipto, y sirvan sólo al Señor. 15 Pero si a ustedes les parece mal servir al Señor, elijan ustedes mismos a quiénes van a servir: a los dioses que sirvieron sus antepasados al otro lado del río Éufrates, o a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra ustedes ahora habitan. Por mi parte, mi familia y yo serviremos al Señor.
16 El pueblo respondió:
—¡Eso no pasará jamás! ¡Nosotros no abandonaremos al Señor por servir a otros dioses! 17 El Señor nuestro Dios es quien nos sacó a nosotros y a nuestros antepasados del país de Egipto, aquella tierra de servidumbre. Él fue quien hizo aquellas grandes señales ante nuestros ojos. Nos protegió durante todo nuestro peregrinaje por el desierto y cuando pasamos entre tantas naciones. 18 El Señor expulsó a todas las que vivían en este país, incluso a los amorreos. Por esa razón, nosotros también serviremos al Señor, porque él es nuestro Dios.
19 Entonces Josué les dijo:
—Ustedes son incapaces de servir al Señor, porque él es Dios *santo y Dios celoso. No les tolerará sus rebeliones y pecados. 20 Si ustedes lo abandonan y sirven a dioses ajenos, él se les echará encima y les traerá desastre; los *destruirá completamente, a pesar de haber sido bueno con ustedes.
21 Pero el pueblo insistió:
—¡Eso no pasará jamás! Nosotros sólo serviremos al Señor.
22 Y Josué les dijo una vez más:
—Ustedes son testigos contra ustedes mismos de que han decidido servir al Señor.
—Sí, sí lo somos —respondió toda la asamblea. 23 Josué replicó:
—Desháganse de los dioses ajenos que todavía conservan. ¡Vuélvanse de todo *corazón al Señor, Dios de Israel!
24 El pueblo respondió:
—Sólo al Señor nuestro Dios serviremos, y sólo a él obedeceremos.
25 Aquel mismo día Josué renovó el *pacto con el pueblo de Israel. Allí mismo, en Siquén, les dio preceptos y normas, 26 y los registró en el libro de la *ley de Dios. Luego tomó una enorme piedra y la colocó bajo la encina que está cerca del santuario del Señor. 27 Entonces le dijo a todo el pueblo:
—Esta piedra servirá de testigo contra ustedes. Ella ha escuchado todas las palabras que el Señor nos ha dicho hoy. Testificará contra ustedes en caso de que ustedes digan falsedades contra su Dios.
28 Después de todo esto, Josué envió a todo el pueblo a sus respectivas propiedades.

Entierros en la Tierra prometida

29 Tiempo después murió Josué hijo de Nun, siervo del Señor, a la edad de ciento diez años. 30 Fue sepultado en la parcela que se le había dado como herencia, en el lugar conocido como Timnat Sera, en la región montañosa de Efraín, al norte del monte Gaas. 31 Durante toda la vida de Josué, el pueblo de Israel había servido al Señor. Así sucedió también durante el tiempo en que estuvieron al frente de Israel los jefes que habían compartido el liderazgo con Josué y que sabían todo lo que el Señor había hecho a favor de su pueblo.
32 Los restos de José, que los israelitas habían traído de Egipto, fueron sepultados en Siquén, en un terreno que Jacob había comprado por cien monedas de plata a los hijos de Jamor, padre de Siquén. El terreno después llegó a ser propiedad de los descendientes de José.
33 Finalmente, Eleazar hijo de Aarón murió y fue sepultado en Guibeá, propiedad de su hijo Finés, en la región montañosa de Efraín.

Joshua 24

Israel Renews its Commitment to the Lord

1 Joshua assembled all the Israelite tribes at Shechem. He summoned Israel’s elders, rulers, judges, and leaders, and they appeared before God.2 Joshua told all the people, “Here is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘In the distant past your ancestorst lived beyond the Euphrates River,t including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshipedt other gods,3 but I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphratest and brought him intot the entire land of Canaan. I made his descendants numerous; I gave him Isaac,4 and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I assigned Mount Seir,t while Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.5 I sent Moses and Aaron, and I struck Egypt down when I intervened in their land.t Then I brought you out.6 When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you arrived at the sea. The Egyptians chased your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.7 Your fatherst cried out for help to the Lord; he made the area between you and the Egyptians dark,t and then drowned them in the sea.t You witnessed with your very own eyest what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness for a long time.t8 Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought with you, but I handed them over to you; you conqueredt their land and I destroyed them from before you.9 Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, launched an attackt against Israel. He summonedt Balaam son of Beor to call down judgmentt on you.10 I refused to respond to Balaam; he keptt prophesying good things aboutt you, and I rescued you from his power.t11 You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.s The leaderst of Jericho, as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, fought with you, but I handed them over to you.12 I sent terrort ahead of you to drive out before you the twot Amorite kings. I gave you the victory; it was not by your swords or bows.t

13 I gave you a land int which you had not worked hard; you took up residence in cities you did not build and you are eating the produce oft vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.’
14 Nows obeyt the Lord and worshipt him with integrity and loyalty. Put aside the gods your ancestorst worshipedt beyond the Euphratest and in Egypt and worshipt the Lord.

15 If you have no desiret to worshipt the Lord, choose today whom you will worship,t whether it be the gods whom your ancestorst worshipedt beyond the Euphrates,t or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But I and my familyt will worshipt the Lord!”
16 The people responded, “Far be it from us to abandon the Lord so we cant worshipt other gods!17 For the Lord our God took us and our fathers out of slaveryt in the land of Egyptt and performed these awesome miraclest before our very eyes. He continually protected us as we traveled and when we passed through nations.t

18 The Lord drove out from before us all the nations, including the Amorites who lived in the land. So we too will worshipt the Lord, for he is our God!”
19 Joshua warnedt the people, “You will not keep worshipingt the Lord, fors he is a holy God.t He is a jealous God who will not forgivets your rebellion or your sins.

20 Ift you abandon the Lord and worshipt foreign gods, he will turn against you;t he will bring disaster on you and destroy you,t though he once treated you well.”t
21 The people said to Joshua, “No! We really willt worshipt the Lord!”22 Joshua said to the people, “Do you agree to be witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to worship the Lord?”t They replied, “We are witnesses!”s

23 Joshua said,t “Now put aside the foreign gods that are among you and submit tot the Lord God of Israel.”

24 The people said to Joshua, “We will worshipt the Lord our God and obey him.”t
25 That day Joshua drew up an agreementt for the people, and he established rules and regulationst for them in Shechem.26 Joshua wrote these words in the Law Scroll of God. He then took a large stone and set it up there under the oak tree near the Lord’s shrine.27 Joshua said to all the people, “Look, this stone will be a witness against you, for it has heard everything the Lord said to us.t It will be a witness against you ift you deny your God.”

28 When Joshua dismissed the people, they went to their allotted portions of land.t

An Era Ends

29 After all thist Joshua son of Nun, the Lord’s servant, died at the age of one hundred ten.30 They buried him in his allotted territoryt in Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

31 Israel worshipedt the Lord throughout Joshua’s lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive.t These men had experienced firsthand everything the Lord had done for Israel.t

32 The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the part of the field that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money.t So it became the inheritance of the tribe of Joseph.t

33 Eleazar son of Aaron died, and they buried him in Gibeah in the hill country of Ephraim, where his son Phinehas had been assigned land.t
