四

1 　人々が無事に渡り終えた時、神様はヨシュアにお語りになりました。
2-3 「特別な任務のために、各部族から一人ずつ選ばれた十二人に命じて、ヨルダン川の真ん中の、祭司が立っている地点から、一つずつ石を拾わせなさい。　その十二の石を集めて、今夜、野営する地に、記念碑として積み上げるのだ。」
4 　ヨシュアは十二人を呼び出し、　5 こう命じました。　「あの箱のある、川の真ん中に行き、一つずつ石をかついで来なさい。　つまり、十二部族にそれぞれ一つずつ、全部で十二だ。　それぞれの石は十二部族を象徴する。　6 その十二の石で記念碑を建てよう。　そうすれば、将来、子供たちに『これは何の記念碑ですか』と尋ねられて、　7 『ヨルダン川を神の箱が渡った時、水がせき止められたことを忘れないためだよ』と話して聞かせることができる。　この記念碑は、その途方もない奇蹟を、イスラエル人が永久に忘れないためのものなのだ。」
8 　十二人はヨシュアの命令に従い、川の真ん中から十二の石を拾いました。　各部族のために一つずつです。　まさに、神様がヨシュアに命じたとおりです。　彼らは石を野営地まで運び、記念碑として建てました。　9 ヨシュアはまた、川の真ん中の祭司たちが立っていた場所にも、十二の石で、記念碑を築きました。　それは、今もそこに建っています。　10 箱をかついでいた祭司たちは、モーセからヨシュアに与えられた神様の命令がことごとく成し遂げられるまで、川の真ん中に立ち尽くしていました。　その間に、人々は急いで川床を渡ったのです。　11 全員が渡り終えると、みんなの見守る中で、箱をかついだ祭司たちが、川から上がって先頭に立ちました。
12-13 モーセの命令どおり完全武装した、ルベン部族とガド部族、それにマナセの半部族からなる四万の軍勢は、一隊となって、神様のために戦う他部族の先頭に立ち、エリコの平原めざして進みました。
14 　その日は、ヨシュアにとって生涯忘れることのできない日となりました。　神様はイスラエル人全員の目の前で、ヨシュアに大きな栄誉をお与えになったのです。　人々は、モーセを敬ったと同じように、ヨシュアを心から敬いました。　15-16 ヨシュアこそが、神様の命を受けて、箱をかつぐ祭司たちに命令を下した人だったからです。
「川から上がりなさい」と祭司たちに命じるよう、神様はヨシュアを促しました。
17 　ヨシュアがそのとおりに命じ、　18 祭司たちが川床から上がって来ると、どうでしょう。　たちまち、水は元どおりに流れ込み、岸いっぱいにあふれました。　19 この奇蹟が起こったのは三月二十四日のことです。　この日、全イスラエルはヨルダン川を渡り、エリコの町の東方にあるギルガルに野営しました。　20 このギルガルに、ヨルダン川から運んだ十二の石を積み上げ、記念碑を建てたのです。
21 　その時ヨシュアは、この記念碑の意味について説明しました。「いつの日か、子供たちが、『なぜここに、こんな石が置いてあるの。これ、どういう意味なの』と尋ねる時がくるだろう。　22 その時には、この十二の石は、イスラエル人がヨルダン川のかわいた土の上を渡った、あのすばらしい奇蹟の記念碑なのだと教えてやりなさい。　23 さらに、その時どのようにして神様が、われわれの目の前で川の水をからし、全員が渡り終えるまでかわいたままにしておかれたかを、教えなさい。　それはまさに、四十年前の紅海での出来事と同じです。24 神様がこうなさったのは、全世界の国民が、イスラエルの神である主こそ、力ある唯一の神様であると悟り、さらに、あなたがたがみな、この神様をいつも礼拝するようになるためです。」

Joshua 4

1 And it came to pass, when all the nation were clean passed over the Jordan, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,2 Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,3 and command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place, where ye shall lodge this night.4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:5 and Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel;6 that this may be a sign among you, that, when your children ask in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?7 then ye shall say unto them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.9 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests that bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.10 For the priests that bare the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.11 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of Jehovah passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:13 about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over before Jehovah unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.14 On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

15 And Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying,16 Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of the Jordan.18 And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah were come up out of the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned unto their place, and went over all its banks, as aforetime.

19 And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho.20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal.21 And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?22 Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.23 For Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over;24 that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye may fear Jehovah your God for ever.
