ヨシュア記 7

七

1 　しかしイスラエル人の中に、罪がひそんでいたのです。　神様のものとするもの以外はすべて滅ぼせ、というヨシュアの命令が、実は守られていなかったのです。　ユダ部族のカルミの子で、祖父はザブディ、曾祖父がゼラフであるアカンが、戦利品の一部をふところに入れていました。　そのために、神様の激しい怒りが、イスラエル人全員に下ったのです。
2 　エリコ陥落後すぐに、ヨシュアはまた、ベテル東方の町アイに、数人のスパイを送り込みました。
3 　彼らは戻って報告しました。　「小さな町ですから、二、三千人もいれば十分です。　すぐに占領できるでしょう。　全員で攻めるまでもありません。」
4 　そこで、およそ三千の兵がアイに送り込まれました。　ところがどうでしょう。　彼らはさんざん痛めつけられたのです。　5 三十六人が攻撃中に殺された上、大ぜいがアイの住民に石切り場まで追われ、次々に倒れました。　イスラエル軍は、この敗北ですっかりおびえてしまいました。　6 ヨシュアと長老たちは心を痛め、衣服を裂き、頭にちりをかぶって、夕方まで神の箱の前にひれ伏しました。
7 　ヨシュアは神様に叫びました。　「ああ神様。　エモリ人の手によって私たちを滅ぼすおつもりなら、どうして、ヨルダン川を渡らせてくださったのですか。　どうして、すでに得ていたもので、満足させてくださらなかったのですか。　こんなことになるくらいなら、ヨルダン川の東側にとどまっていればよかったのです。　8 ああ神様。敵に背を見せてしまった今となっては、どうすることもできません。9 カナン人や近隣の民族がこれを聞けば、攻めて来るに決まっています。　もはや全滅です。　そうなれば、神様の大いなる御名の栄誉はどうなるのでしょう。」
10-11 しかし、神様はお答えになりました。　「顔を上げて、立て。イスラエルは罪を犯したのだ。　わたしの命令に背いて、取ってはならないと命じた戦利品を盗んだのだ。　盗んだだけではない。　偽って、自分の持ち物の中に隠しているのだ。　12 だから、おまえたちは敗れた。　これで、敗北の原因がわかったろう。　今では、イスラエルのほうが滅ぼされる運命にある。　その罪が完全に取り除かれなければ、もう、おまえとは共に歩まない。
13 　立て。　みなにこう告げよ。　『各自、あすに備えて、きよめの儀式を行なえ。　イスラエルの神様である主がこう言われるからだ。だれかが神様のものを盗んだ。　この罪を処分するまで、敵を破ることはできない。　14 明朝、あなたがたは部族ごとに進み出なさい。神様が犯人のいる部族を摘発なさるだろう。　その部族は氏族に分かれて進み出なさい。　神様が犯人の属する氏族を示してくださるだろう。　次に、その氏族は家族ごとに進み出なさい。　そして、犯人を含む家族はみな、一人ずつ前へ出るのだ。　15 神様のものを盗んだ者は、全財産もろとも、火で焼かれるがいい。　神の契約を破って、全イスラエルに災難をもたらしたからだ。』」
16 　翌朝はやく、ヨシュアは神様の前に、イスラエルの各部族を連れ出しました。　すると、ユダ部族に犯人がいることがわかったのです。17 ついでユダの各氏族を進み出させると、ゼラフの氏族だとわかりました。　今度は、家族に分かれて神様の前に進み出たところ、ザブディの家族だということになりました。　18 ザブディ家の男子が一人ずつ連れ出されると、ついに、犯人はザブディの孫アカンであると判明したのです。
19 　ヨシュアはアカンにただしました。　「よいか。　イスラエルの神様に栄光を帰すのだ。　ほんとうのことを白状しろ。　さあ、何をしたか、包み隠さず話せ。」
20 　「私はイスラエルの神様に対して、取り返しのつかない罪を犯しました。　21 ちょっと見たら、バビロン産の美しい外套と、金の延べ棒と、銀とがあったんです。　銀は六万円もするだろうし、金のほうは十五万円の値打があると思いました。　すると、矢も盾もたまらず欲しくなりました。　それで、そいつを自分のテントの下に埋めたんです。　銀はいちばん深い所に隠しました。」
22 　さっそく人をやって、戦利品を捜させました。　テントへ駆けつけた面々は、アカンの供述どおり、隠してあった盗品を掘り出し、さらに深い所からは銀を見つけました。　23 それらはすべてヨシュアのもとへ運ばれ、神様の前に並べられました。　24 ヨシュアは全イスラエル人と共に、アカンをアコルの谷まで連れ出しました。　もちろん、盗んだ銀、外套、金の延べ棒、それに息子、娘、牛、ろば、羊、テントなど、全財産もいっしょです。
25 　ヨシュアはアカンに言い渡しました。　「どうして、われわれにこんな災難を招くようなことをしでかしたのだ。　今度は、神様がおまえをひどい目に会わせる番だ。」
人々は彼とその家族を石で打ち殺し、死体を焼き、　26 その上に石を高く積み上げました。　その石塚は現在も残っており、谷は、今もなおアコル〔災い〕の谷と呼ばれています。　こうして、ようやく神様の激しい怒りはおさまったのです。

Joshua 7

1 But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted thing; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the devoted thing: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the children of Israel.

2 And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth-aven, on the east side of Beth-el, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and spy out the land. And the men went up and spied out Ai.3 And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither; for they are but few.4 So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.5 And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men; and they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them at the descent; and the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

6 And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.7 And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord Jehovah, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over the Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? would that we had been content and dwelt beyond the Jordan!8 Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel hath turned their backs before their enemies!9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

10 And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore art thou thus fallen upon thy face?11 Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.12 Therefore the children of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except ye destroy the devoted thing from among you.13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, There is a devoted thing in the midst of thee, O Israel; thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the devoted thing from among you.14 In the morning therefore ye shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which Jehovah taketh shall come near by families; and the family which Jehovah shall take shall come near by households; and the household which Jehovah shall take shall come near man by man.15 And it shall be, that he that is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath; because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

16 So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel near by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:17 and he brought near the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zerahites: and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:18 and he brought near his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.19 And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to Jehovah, the God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.20 And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against Jehovah, the God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:21 when I saw among the spoil a goodly Babylonish mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.23 And they took them from the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel; and they laid them down before Jehovah.24 And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them up unto the valley of Achor.25 And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? Jehovah shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones, unto this day; and Jehovah turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.
