Joshua 8
1 And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land;2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: set thee an ambush for the city behind it.
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night.4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:5 and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city. And it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them;6 and they will come out after us, till we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: so we will flee before them;7 and ye shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand.8 And it shall be, when ye have seized upon the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of Jehovah shall ye do: see, I have commanded you.9 And Joshua sent them forth; and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
10 And Joshua arose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.11 And all the people, even the men of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai.12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of the city.13 So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers-in-wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he knew not that there was an ambush against him behind the city.15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.16 And all the people that were in the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
18 And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thy hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire.20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.22 And the others came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.25 And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.26 For Joshua drew not back his hand, wherewith he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey unto themselves, according unto the word of Jehovah which he commanded Joshua.28 So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a heap for ever, even a desolation, unto this day.29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the eventide: and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, unto this day.
30 Then Joshua built an altar unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, in mount Ebal,31 as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of unhewn stones, upon which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings.32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Israel.33 And all Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the homeborn; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners that were among them.
Joshua 8
Israel Conquers Ai
1 The Lord told Joshua, “Don’t be afraid and don’t panic!t Take the whole army with you and march against Ai!t See, I am handing over to yout the king of Ai, along with his people, city, and land.
2 Do to Ai and its king what you did to Jerichos and its king, except you may plunder its goods and cattle. Set an ambush behind the city!”
3 Joshua and the whole army marched against Ai.t Joshua selected thirty thousand brave warriors and sent them out at night.4 He toldt them, “Look, set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city; all of you be ready!5 I and all the troopst who are with me will approach the city. When they come out to fight us like before, we will retreat from them.6 They will attackt us until we have lured them from the city, for they will say, ‘They are retreating from us like before.’ We will retreat from them.7 Then you rise up from your hiding placet and seizet the city. The Lord your God will hand it over to you.8 When you capture the city, set itt on fire. Do as the Lord says! See, I have given you orders.”t
9 Joshua sent them away and they went to their hiding placet west of Ai, between Bethels and Ai.t Joshua spent that night with the army.t
10 Bright and early the next morning Joshua gatheredt the army,t and he and the leaderst of Israel marchedt at the head of itt to Ai.11 All the troops that were with him marched up and drew near the city.t They camped north of Ai on the other side of the valley.t12 He took five thousand men and set an ambush west of the city between Bethels and Ai.
13 The army was in position – the main army north of the city and the rear guard west of the city. That night Joshua went intot the middle of the valley.
14 When the king of Ai saw Israel, he and his whole army quickly got up the next day and went out to fight Israel at the meeting place near the Arabah.t But he did not realizet men were hiding behind the city.t15 Joshua and all Israel pretended to be defeated by them and they retreated along the way to the desert.16 All the reinforcementst in Ais were orderedt to chase them; they chased Joshua and were lured away from the city.
17 No men were left in Ai or Bethel;ss they all went out after Israel.t They left the city wide open and chased Israel.
18 The Lord told Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the curved sword in your hand, for I am handing the cityt over to you.” So Joshua held out toward Ai the curved sword in his hand.19 When he held out his hand, the men waiting in ambush rose up quickly from their place and attacked.t They entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire.20 When the men of Ai turned around, they sawt the smoke from the city ascending into the sky and were so shocked they were unable to flee in any direction.t In the meantime the men who were retreating to the desert turned against their pursuers.21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that the city was going up in smoke,t they turned around and struck down the men of Ai.22 At the same time the men who had taken the city came out to fight, and the men of Ai were trapped in the middle.t The Israelites struck them down, leaving no survivors or refugees.
23 But they captured the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the ment of Ai who had chased them toward the desertt (they all fell by the sword),s all Israel returned to Ai and put the sword to it.25 Twelve thousand men and women diedt that day, including all the men of Ai.26 Joshua kept holding out his curved sword until Israel had annihilated all who lived in Ai.t27 But Israel did plunder the cattle and the goods of the city, in accordance with the Lord’s orders to Joshua.t28 Joshua burned Ai and made it a permanently uninhabited mound (it remains that way to this very day).t
29 He hung the king of Ai on a tree, leaving him exposed until evening.t At sunset Joshua ordered that his corpse be taken down from the tree.s They threw it down at the entrance of the city gate and erected over it a large pile of stones (it remains to this very day).t
Covenant Renewal
30 Then Joshua built an altar for the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal,31 just as Moses the Lord’s servant had commanded the Israelites. As described in the law scroll of Moses, it was made with uncut stones untouched by an iron tool.t They offered burnt sacrifices on it and sacrificed tokens of peace.t32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua inscribed on the stones a duplicate of the law written by Moses.t33 All the people,t rulers,t leaders, and judges were standing on either side of the ark, in front of the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord. Both resident foreigners and native Israelites were there.t Half the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and the other half in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the Lord’s servant had previously instructed to them to do for the formal blessing ceremony.ts34 Thent Joshua read aloud all the words of the law, including the blessings and the curses, just as they are written in the law scroll.
35 Joshua read aloud every commandment Moses had givent before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, children, and resident foreigners who lived among them.t
