士師記 1

一

1 　ヨシュアの死後、イスラエル国民は神様から指示を仰ごうとしました。
「カナン人と戦うには、まずどの部族が出陣すればよいのでしょうか。」
2 　「ユダ部族だ。　彼らに、輝かしい勝利を約束しよう。」
3 　ところが、ユダ部族の指導者たちは、シメオン部族に加勢を求めたのです。　「われわれの割り当て地に住むやつらを追っ払うのに、力を貸してほしい。　その代わり、君らが戦う時には必ず応援するよ。」　そんなわけで、シメオンとユダの軍隊は、合流して出陣したのです。　4-6 神様のお助けによるのでしょう、彼らはカナン人とペリジ人を打ち破ることができました。　このベゼクでの戦闘で、なんと一万人もの敵が殺されたのです。　アドニ・ベゼク王は逃げ出したものの、すぐ捕らえられ、手足の親指を切り取られてしまいました。
7 　「わしもこうやって、七十人もの王の親指を切り取り、わしの食卓から落ちるパンくずを食べさせたものだが、いま神様は、そのつけを回してこられたというわけだ」と、王は嘆きました。　王はエルサレムへ連れて行かれ、そこで息を引き取りました。
8 　ユダ部族はエルサレムを占領し、住民を殺し、町に火をかけました。　9 そののちユダの軍隊は、低地に住むカナン人を攻めたばかりか、山地やネゲブのカナン人とも戦いました。　10 また、以前キルヤテ・アルバと呼ばれたヘブロンにいるカナン人めがけて攻撃を開始し、シェシャイ、アヒマン、タルマイなどの町を滅ぼしました。　11 そのあと、デビルを攻撃しました。　デビルは、以前キルヤテ・セフェルと呼ばれていました。
12 　「だれか、率先してデビルを攻撃する者はおらんのか。　占領した者には、娘アクサを妻として与えるぞ」と、カレブは全軍に呼びかけました。
13 　カレブの弟ケナズの息子、オテニエルが、先陣を志願してデビルを占領し、アクサを花嫁に迎えました。　14 二人が新家庭を築くために巣立つ時、アクサは夫にそそのかされ、贈り物としてもっと土地をくれるよう、父にねだることにしました。　彼女が、ろばから降りると、カレブは尋ねました。
「どうした。　何か欲しいものでもあるのか。」
15 　「ネゲブの地は十分にいただいたのですけれど、できれば、泉もいただきたいの。」
そこでカレブは、上の泉と下の泉を与えました。
16 　ユダ部族が、アラデの南方、ネゲブの荒野の新天地に移った時、モーセの義父の子孫であるケニ族の人々も同行しました。　彼らは、「なつめやしの町」と呼ばれたエリコを離れ、以後ずっといっしょに生活しました。　17 そののちユダ軍はシメオン軍の加勢を得て、ツェファテの町に住むカナン人と戦い、絶滅させました。　今でも、その町はホルマ〔「絶滅」の意〕と呼ばれています。　18 ユダ軍はさらに、ガザ、アシュケロン、エクロンの町々と周辺の村々を手中に収めました。19 神様が助けてくださったので、山地一帯の住民を全滅させることができたのです。　ただし、谷の住民は鉄の戦車を持っていたので、征服できませんでした。
20 　ヘブロンの町は、神様のお約束どおりカレブの手に落ちました。カレブは、そこに住むアナクの三人の息子を追い出しました。
21 　ベニヤミン部族は、エルサレムに住むエブス人を根絶やしにできませんでした。　それでエブス人は、今でもイスラエル人といっしょに住んでいます。
22-23 ヨセフ部族も、ベテルの町を襲撃しました。　ベテルは以前ルズと呼ばれた町です。　神様はヨセフ部族とともにおられました。　まず、スパイが派遣されました。　24 彼らは町から出て来た男を捕まえ、町の城壁の出入口を教えてくれたら、家族のいのちも助けてやると持ちかけたのです。　25 案の定、男は町に入る方法をしゃべりました。おかげで、ヨセフ部族は町に攻め込み、全住民を滅ぼすことができたのです。　もちろん、その男と家族だけは助かりました。　26 のちに、その男はヘテ人の地に町を建て、ルズと名づけました。　今でも知られているとおりです。
27 　マナセ部族は、ベテ・シェアン、タナク、ドル、イブレアム、メギドとその周辺の町々の住民を追い出すことに失敗しました。　それでカナン人は、その地にとどまり続けたのです。　28 のちにイスラエルは強大になりましたが、カナン人を奴隷として働かせることはあっても、追い出しはしませんでした。　29 ゲゼルに住むカナン人についても、同じです。　今もなお、エフライム部族に混じって生活しています。
30 　ゼブルン部族も、キテロンとナハラルの住民を滅ぼすには至らず、奴隷として働かせました。　31-32 アシェル部族は、アコ、シドン、マハレブ、アクジブ、ヘルバ、アフェク、レホブの住民を追い出しませんでした。　それでイスラエル人は、今なお、原住民であるカナン人といっしょに住んでいるのです。　33 ナフタリ部族は、ベテ・シェメシュとベテ・アナテの住民を追い出しませんでした。　彼らは奴隷として、イスラエル人に混じって暮らし続けました。
34 　ダン部族の場合は、エモリ人に圧倒されて山地へ追いやられ、谷に降りることができませんでした。　35 しかし、のちにエモリ人は、ヘレス山、アヤロン、シャアルビムへと散在するにつれ、ヨセフ部族に征服されてしまい、奴隷として働かされることになりました。　36 エモリ人との境界線は、アクラビムの丘陵地帯から始まり、セラと呼ばれる地点を通り、そこから上の方に延びています。

Judges 1

1 And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?2 And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.4 And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.7 And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

8 And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.14 And it came to pass, when she came unto him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.18 Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.19 And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out the inhabitants of the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)24 And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.25 And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

27 And Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its towns, nor of Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.28 And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

31 Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

33 Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;35 but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.36 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
