El año sabático

1 En el monte Sinaí el Señor le ordenó a Moisés 2 que les dijera a los israelitas: «Cuando ustedes hayan entrado en la tierra que les voy a dar, la tierra misma deberá observar un año de reposos en honor al Señor. 3 Durante seis años sembrarás tus campos, podarás tus viñas y cosecharás sus productos; 4 pero llegado el séptimo año la tierra gozará de un año de reposo en honor al Señor. No sembrarás tus campos ni podarás tus viñas; 5 no segarás lo que haya brotado por sí mismo ni vendimiarás las uvas de tus viñas no cultivadas. La tierra gozará de un año completo de reposo. 6 Sin embargo, de todo lo que la tierra produzca durante ese año sabático, podrán comer no sólo tú sino también tu siervo y tu sierva, el jornalero y el residente transitorio entre ustedes. 7 También podrán alimentarse tu ganado y los animales que haya en el país. Todo lo que la tierra produzca ese año será sólo para el consumo diario.

El año del jubileo

8 »Siete veces contarás siete años sabáticos, de modo que los siete años sabáticos sumen cuarenta y nueve años, 9 y el día diez del mes séptimo, es decir, el día del Perdón, harás resonar la trompeta por todo el país. 10 El año cincuenta será declarado *santo, y se proclamará en el país la liberación de todos sus habitantes. Será para ustedes un jubileo, y cada uno volverá a su heredad familiar y a su propio clan. 11 El año cincuenta será para ustedes un jubileo: ese año no sembrarán ni cosecharán lo que haya brotado por sí mismo, ni tampoco vendimiarán las viñas no cultivadas. 12 Ese año es jubileo y será santo para ustedes. Comerán solamente lo que los campos produzcan por sí mismos.
13 »En el año de jubileo cada uno volverá a su heredad familiar.
14 »Si entre ustedes se realizan transacciones de compraventa, no se exploten los unos a los otros. 15 Tú comprarás de tu prójimo a un precio proporcional al número de años que falten para el próximo jubileo, y él te venderá a un precio proporcional al número de años que queden por cosechar. 16 Si aún faltan muchos años para el jubileo, aumentarás el precio en la misma proporción; pero si faltan pocos, rebajarás el precio proporcionalmente, porque lo que se te está vendiendo es sólo el número de cosechas. 17 No se explotarán los unos a los otros, sino que temerán a su Dios. Yo soy el Señor su Dios.

Consecuencias de la obediencia

18 »Pongan en práctica mis estatutos y observen mis preceptos, y habitarán seguros en la tierra. 19 La tierra dará su fruto, y comerán hasta saciarse, y allí vivirán seguros.
20 »Si acaso se preguntan: “¿Qué comeremos en el séptimo año, si no plantamos ni cosechamos nuestros productos?”, 21 déjenme decirles que en el sexto año les enviaré una bendición tan grande que la tierra producirá como para tres años. 22 Cuando ustedes siembren durante el octavo año, todavía estarán comiendo de la cosecha anterior, y continuarán comiendo de ella hasta la cosecha del año siguiente.

Leyes sobre el rescate de propiedades

23 »La tierra no se venderá a perpetuidad, porque la tierra es mía y ustedes no son aquí más que forasteros y huéspedes. 24 Por tanto, en el país habrá la posibilidad de recobrar todo terreno que haya sido heredad familiar.
25 »En el caso de que uno de tus compatriotas se empobrezca y tenga que vender parte de su heredad familiar, su pariente más cercano rescatará lo que su hermano haya vendido. 26 Si el hombre no tiene a nadie que pague el rescate a su favor, pero él mismo llega a prosperar y consigue lo suficiente para rescatar su propiedad, 27 deberá calcular el número de años transcurridos desde la venta y reembolsar el saldo a quien se la haya comprado. Así podrá volver a su propiedad. 28 Pero si no consigue lo suficiente para rescatarla, la tierra quedará en posesión del comprador hasta el año del jubileo, cuando el que la vendió la recobrará, y ésta volverá a su heredad familiar.
29 »Si alguno vende una casa en una ciudad amurallada, tendrá derecho a rescatarla durante un año completo a partir de la fecha de venta. Ése es el tiempo que dura su derecho a rescatarla. 30 Si no rescata la casa antes de cumplirse el año, no se le devolverá en el jubileo sino que pasará a ser propiedad perpetua del comprador y de sus descendientes.
31 »Las casas que estén en aldeas sin murallas se considerarán campo abierto, pero podrán rescatarse y se devolverán en el jubileo.
32 »Los levitas tendrán siempre el derecho de rescatar sus casas en las ciudades de su propiedad. 33 Si alguno de los levitas hace valer su derecho, la casa que vendió en una de sus ciudades se le devolverá en el jubileo, porque las casas en las ciudades de los levitas son su heredad familiar entre los israelitas. 34 Pero los campos alrededor de sus ciudades no se venderán, pues son su propiedad inalienable.
35 »Si alguno de tus compatriotas se empobrece y no tiene cómo sostenerse, ayúdale como lo harías con el extranjero o con el residente transitorio; así podrá seguir viviendo entre ustedes. 36 No le exigirás interés cuando le prestes dinero o víveres, sino que temerás a tu Dios; así tu compatriota podrá seguir viviendo entre ustedes. 37 Tampoco le prestarás dinero con intereses ni le impondrás recargo a los víveres que le fíes. 38 Yo soy el Señor su Dios, que los saqué de Egipto para darles la tierra de Canaán y para ser su Dios.
39 »Si alguno de tus compatriotas se empobrece y se ve obligado a venderse a ti, no lo hagas trabajar como esclavo. 40 Trátalo como al jornalero o como al residente transitorio que vive entre ustedes. Trabajará para ti, sólo hasta el año del jubileo. 41 Entonces lo pondrás en libertad junto con sus hijos, y podrán volver a su propia familia y a la heredad de sus antepasados. 42 Todos los israelitas son mis siervos. Yo los saqué de Egipto, así que no serán vendidos como esclavos. 43 No serás un amo cruel, sino que temerás a tu Dios.
44 »Asegúrate de que tus esclavos y esclavas provengan de las naciones vecinas; allí podrás comprarlos. 45 También podrás comprar esclavos nacidos en tu país, siempre y cuando sean de las familias extranjeras que vivan en medio de ustedes. Ellos serán propiedad de ustedes, 46 y podrán dejárselos a sus hijos como herencia para que les sirvan de por vida. En lo que respecta a tus compatriotas, no serás un amo cruel.
47 »Si un extranjero o un residente transitorio entre ustedes se enriquece, y uno de tus compatriotas se empobrece y tiene que venderse a un extranjero o a un familiar de ese extranjero, 48 no perderá su derecho a ser rescatado después de haberse vendido. Podrá rescatarlo cualquiera de sus parientes: 49 un tío, un primo o cualquier otro de sus parientes. Y si llegara a prosperar, él mismo podrá pagar su rescate. 50 Él y su dueño calcularán el tiempo transcurrido, desde el año en que se vendió hasta el año del jubileo. El precio de su liberación se determinará en proporción al sueldo de un jornalero por ese número de años. 51 Si aún faltan muchos años, pagará por su rescate una suma proporcional a la que se pagó por él. 52 Si sólo faltan pocos años para el jubileo, calculará y pagará por su rescate en proporción a esos años. 53 Ustedes vigilarán que su dueño lo trate como a los que trabajan por contrato anual, y que no lo trate con crueldad.
54 »Si tu compatriota no es rescatado por ninguno de esos medios, tanto él como sus hijos quedarán en libertad en el año del jubileo.
55 »Los israelitas son mis siervos. Yo los saqué de Egipto. Yo soy el Señor su Dios.

LEVITICUS 25

The Seventh Year

(Deuteronomy 15.1-11)

1  t When Moses was on Mount Sinai, the [Lord] told him

2 to say to the community of Israel:
After you enter the land that I am giving you, it must be allowed to rest one year out of every seven. 3 You may raise grain and grapes for six years, 4 but the seventh year you must let your fields and vineyards rest in honor of me, your [Lord]. 5 This is to be a time of complete rest for your fields and vineyards, so don't harvest anything they produce.

6-7 However, you and your slaves and your hired workers, as well as any domestic or wild animals, may eat whatever grows on its own.

The Year of Celebration

The [Lord] said to his people:

12 In this time of sacred celebration you may eat only what grows on its own.
13 During this year, all property must go back to its original owner. 14-15 So when you buy or sell farmland, the price is to be determined by the number of crops it can produce before the next Year of Celebration. Don't try to cheat. 16 If it is a long time before the next Year of Celebration, the price will be higher, because what is really being sold are the crops that the land can produce.

17 I am the [Lord] your God, so obey me and don't cheat anyone.
18-19 If you obey my laws and teachings, you will live safely in the land and enjoy its abundant crops. 20 Don't ever worry about what you will eat during the seventh year when you are forbidden to plant or harvest. 21 I will see to it that you harvest enough in the sixth year to last for three years.

22 In the eighth year you will live on what you harvested in the sixth year, but in the ninth year you will eat what you plant and harvest in the eighth year.

23 No land may be permanently bought or sold. It all belongs to me—it isn't your land, and you only live there for a little while.

24 When property is being sold, the original owner must be given the first chance to buy it.
25 If any of you Israelites become so poor that you are forced to sell your property, your closest relative must buy it back, 26 if that relative has the money. Later, if you can afford to buy it, 27 you must pay enough to make up for what the present owner will lose on it before the next Year of Celebration, when the property would become yours again.

28 But if you don't have the money to pay the present owner a fair price, you will have to wait until the Year of Celebration, when the property will once again become yours.
29 If you sell a house in a walled city, you have only one year in which to buy it back. 30 If you don't buy it back before that year is up, it becomes the permanent property of the one who bought it, and it will not be returned to you in the Year of Celebration. 31 But a house out in a village may be bought back at any time just like a field. And it must be returned to its original owner in the Year of Celebration. 32 If any Levites own houses inside a walled city, they will always have the right to buy them back. 33 And any houses that they do not buy back will be returned to them in the Year of Celebration, because these homes are their permanent property among the people of Israel.

34 No pastureland owned by the Levi tribe can ever be sold; it is their permanent possession.

Help for the Poor

The [Lord] said:

38 Remember—I am the [Lord] your God! I rescued you from Egypt and gave you the land of Canaan, so that I would be your God.
39  t Suppose some of your people become so poor that they have to sell themselves and become your slaves. 40 Then you must treat them as servants, rather than as slaves. And in the Year of Celebration they are to be set free, 41 so they and their children may return home to their families and property. 42 I brought them out of Egypt to be my servants, not to be sold as slaves.

43 So obey me, and don't be cruel to the poor.
44 If you want slaves, buy them from other nations 45 or from the foreigners who live in your own country, and make them your property.

46 You can own them, and even leave them to your children when you die, but do not make slaves of your own people or be cruel to them.
47 Even if some of you Israelites become so much in debt that you must sell yourselves to foreigners in your country, 48 you still have the right to be set free by a relative, such as a brother 49 or uncle or cousin, or some other family member. In fact, if you ever get enough money, you may buy your own freedom 50 by paying your owner for the number of years you would still be a slave before the next Year of Celebration. 51-52 The longer the time until then, the more you will have to pay. 53 And even while you are the slaves of foreigners in your own country, your people must make sure that you are not mistreated. 54 If you cannot gain your freedom in any of these ways, both you and your children will still be set free in the Year of Celebration. 55 People of Israel, I am the [Lord] your God, and I brought you out of Egypt to be my own servants.
