1 Hỡi Thê-ô-phi-lơ quí nhân, vì có nhiều kẻ dốc lòng chép sử về những sự đã làm nên trong chúng ta,2 theo như các người chứng kiến từ lúc ban đầu và trở nên người giảng đạo đã truyền lại cho chúng ta,3 vậy, sau khi đã xét kỹ càng từ đầu mọi sự ấy, tôi cũng tưởng nên theo thứ tự viết mà tỏ ra cho ông,4 để ông biết những điều mình đã học là chắc chắn.5 Trong đời Hê-rốt, vua nước Giu-đê, có một thầy tế lễ, về ban A-bi-a, tên là Xa-cha-ri; vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét, thuộc về chi phái A-rôn.6 Cả hai đều là công bình trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời, vâng giữ mọi điều răn và lễ nghi của Chúa một cách không chỗ trách được.7 Hai người không có con, vì Ê-li-sa-bét son sẻ, và cả hai đều cao tuổi.8 Vả, Xa-cha-ri cứ theo thứ tự trong ban mình mà làm chức tế lễ trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.9 Khi đã bắt thăm theo lệ các thầy cả lập ra rồi, thì người được gọi vào nơi thánh của Chúa để dâng hương.10 Đang giờ dâng hương, cả đoàn dân đông đều ở ngoài cầu nguyện.11 Bấy giờ có một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện ra cùng Xa-cha-ri, đứng bên hữu bàn thờ xông hương.12 Xa-cha-ri thấy thì bối rối sợ hãi.13 Nhưng thiên sứ nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ, vì lời cầu nguyện ngươi đã được nhậm rồi. Ê-li-sa-bét vợ ngươi, sẽ sanh một con trai, ngươi khá đặt tên là Giăng.14 Con trai đó sẽ làm cho ngươi vui mừng hớn hở, và nhiều kẻ sẽ mừng rỡ về sự sanh người ra.15 Vì người sẽ nên tôn trọng trước mặt Chúa; không uống rượu hay là giống gì làm cho say, và sẽ được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ.16 Người sẽ làm cho nhiều con trai Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại cùng Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời của họ;17 chính người lại sẽ lấy tâm thần quyền phép Ê-li mà đi trước mặt Chúa, để đem lòng cha trở về con cái, kẻ loạn nghịch đến sự khôn ngoan của người công bình, đặng sửa soạn cho Chúa một dân sẵn lòng.18 Xa-cha-ri thưa rằng: Bởi sao tôi biết được điều đó? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi đã cao tuổi rồi.19 Thiên sứ trả lời rằng: Ta là Gáp-ri-ên, đứng trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời; Ngài đã sai ta đến truyền cho ngươi và báo tin mừng nầy.20 Nầy, ngươi sẽ câm, không nói được cho đến ngày nào các điều ấy xảy ra, vì ngươi không tin lời ta, là lời đến kỳ sẽ ứng nghiệm.21 Bấy giờ, dân chúng đợi Xa-cha-ri, và lấy làm lạ, vì người ở lâu trong nơi thánh.22 Khi Xa-cha-ri ra, không nói với chúng được, thì họ mới hiểu rằng người đã thấy sự hiện thấy gì trong đền thánh; người ra dấu cho họ, mà vẫn còn câm.23 Khi những ngày về phần việc mình đã trọn, người trở về nhà.24 Khỏi ít lâu, vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét chịu thai, ẩn mình đi trong năm tháng, mà nói rằng:25 Ấy là ơn Chúa đã làm cho tôi, khi Ngài đã đoái đến tôi, để cất sự xấu hổ tôi giữa mọi người.26 Đến tháng thứ sáu, Đức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa- rét, xứ Ga-li-lê,27 tới cùng một người nữ đồng trinh tên là Ma-ri, đã hứa gả cho một người nam tên là Giô-sép, về dòng vua Đa-vít.28 Thiên sứ vào chỗ người nữ ở, nói rằng: Hỡi người được ơn, mừng cho ngươi; Chúa ở cùng ngươi.29 Ma-ri nghe nói thì bối rối, tự hỏi rằng lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì.30 Thiên-sứ bèn nói rằng: Hỡi Ma-ri, đừng sợ, vì ngươi đã được ơn trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.31 Nầy, ngươi sẽ chịu thai và sanh một con trai mà đặt tên là Jêsus.32 Con trai ấy sẽ nên tôn trọng, được xưng là Con của Đấng Rất Cao; và Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời, sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi Đa-vít là tổ phụ Ngài.33 Ngài sẽ trị vì đời đời nhà Gia-cốp, nước Ngài vô cùng.34 Ma-ri bèn thưa rằng: Tôi chẳng hề nhận biết người nam nào, thì làm sao có được sự đó?35 Thiên sứ truyền rằng: Đức Thánh Linh sẽ đến trên ngươi, và quyền phép Đấng Rất Cao sẽ che phủ ngươi dưới bóng mình, cho nên con thánh sanh ra, phải xưng là Con Đức Chúa Trời.36 Kìa, Ê-li-sa-bét, bà con ngươi, cũng đã chịu thai một trai trong lúc già nua; người ấy vốn có tiếng là son, mà nay cưu mang được sáu tháng rồi.37 Bởi vì không việc chi Đức Chúa Trời chẳng làm được.38 Ma-ri thưa rằng: Tôi đây là tôi tớ Chúa; xin sự ấy xảy ra cho tôi như lời người truyền! Đoạn thiên sứ lìa khỏi Ma-ri.39 Trong những ngày đó, Ma-ri chờ dậy, lật đật đi trong miền núi, đến một thành về xứ Giu-đa,40 vào nhà Xa-cha-ri mà chào Ê-li-sa-bét.41 Vả, Ê-li-sa-bét vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào, con nhỏ ở trong lòng liền nhảy nhót; và Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy Đức Thánh Linh,42 bèn cất tiếng kêu rằng: Ngươi có phước trong đám đàn bà, thai trong lòng ngươi cũng được phước.43 Nhân đâu ta được sự vẻ vang nầy, là mẹ Chúa ta đến thăm ta?44 Bởi vì tai ta mới nghe tiếng ngươi chào, thì con nhỏ ở trong lòng ta liền nhảy mừng.45 Phước cho người đã tin, vì lời Chúa truyền cho sẽ được ứng nghiệm!46 Ma-ri bèn nói rằng: Linh hồn tôi ngợi khen Chúa,47 Tâm thần tôi mừng rỡ trong Đức Chúa Trời, là Cứu Chúa tôi.48 Vì Ngài đã đoái đến sự hèn hạ của tôi tớ Ngài. Nầy, từ rày về sau, muôn đời sẽ khen tôi là kẻ có phước;49 Bởi Đấng Toàn Năng đã làm các việc lớn cho tôi. Danh Ngài là thánh,50 Và Ngài thương xót kẻ kính sợ Ngài từ đời nầy sang đời kia.51 Ngài đã dùng cánh tay mình để tỏ ra quyền phép; Và phá tan mưu của kẻ kiêu ngạo toan trong lòng.52 Ngài đã cách người có quyền khỏi ngôi họ, Và nhắc kẻ khiêm nhượng lên.53 Ngài đã làm cho kẻ đói được đầy thức ngon, Và đuổi kẻ giàu về tay không.54 Ngài đã vùa giúp Y-sơ-ra-ên, tôi tớ Ngài, Và nhớ lại sự thương xót mình. Đối với Áp-ra-ham cùng con cháu người luôn luôn,55 Như Ngài đã phán cùng tổ phụ chúng ta vậy.56 Ma-ri ở với Ê-li-sa-bét chừng ba tháng, rồi trở về nhà mình.57 Bấy giờ, đến ngày mãn nguyệt, Ê-li-sa-bét sanh được một trai.58 Xóm riềng bà con nghe Chúa tỏ ra sự thương xót cả thể cho Ê-li-sa-bét, thì chia vui cùng người.59 Qua ngày thứ tám, họ đều đến để làm lễ cắt bì cho con trẻ; và đặt tên là Xa-cha-ri theo tên của cha.60 Nhưng mẹ nói rằng: Không! phải đặt tên con là Giăng.61 Họ nói: Trong bà con ngươi không ai có tên đó.62 Họ bèn ra dấu hỏi cha muốn đặt tên gì cho con.63 Xa-cha-ri biểu lấy bảng nhỏ, và viết rằng: Giăng là tên nó. Ai nấy đều lấy làm lạ.64 Tức thì miệng người mở ra, lưỡi được thong thả, nói và ngợi khen Đức Chúa Trời.65 Hết thảy xóm giềng đều kinh sợ, và người ta nói chuyện với nhau về mọi sự ấy khắp miền núi xứ Giu-đê.66 Ai nghe cũng ghi vào lòng mà nói rằng: Ấy vậy, con trẻ đó sẽ ra thể nào? Vì tay Chúa ở cùng con trẻ ấy.67 Bấy giờ, Xa-cha-ri, cha con trẻ ấy, được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh, thì nói tiên tri rằng:68 Ngợi khen Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, Vì đã thăm viếng và chuộc dân Ngài,69 Cùng sanh ra cho chúng tôi trong nhà Đa-vít, tôi tớ Ngài, Một Đấng Cứu thế có quyền phép!70 Như lời Ngài đã dùng miệng các thánh tiên tri phán từ thuở trước,71 Ngài cứu chúng tôi khỏi kẻ thù và tay mọi người ghen ghét chúng tôi;72 Ngài tỏ lòng thương xót đến tổ tông chúng tôi, Và nhớ lại lời giao ước thánh của Ngài,73 Theo như Ngài đã thề với Áp-ra-ham là tổ phụ chúng tôi,74 Mà hứa rằng khi chúng tôi đã được cứu khỏi tay kẻ nghịch thù, Ngài sẽ ban ơn lành cho chúng tôi, trước mặt Ngài,75 Lấy sự thánh khiết và công bình mà hầu việc Ngài, trọn đời mình không sợ hãi gì hết.76 Hỡi con trẻ, người ta sẽ kêu con là tiên tri của Đấng Rất Cao; Con sẽ đi trước mặt Chúa, dọn đường Ngài,77 Để cho dân Ngài bởi sự tha tội họ mà biết sự rỗi.78 Vì Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi động lòng thương xót, Và mặt trời mọc lên từ nơi cao thăm viếng chúng tôi,79 Để soi những kẻ ngồi chỗ tối tăm và trong bóng sự chết, Cùng đưa chân chúng tôi đi đường bình an.80 Vả, con trẻ ấy lớn lên, tâm thần mạnh mẽ, ở nơi đồng vắng cho đến ngày tỏ mình ra cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.

Explanatory Preface

1 Nowt many have undertaken to compile an accountt of the thingst that have been fulfilledt among us,2 like the accountst passed ont to us by those who were eyewitnesses and servants of the words from the beginning.t3 Sot it seemed good to me as well,s because I have followedt all things carefully from the beginning, to write an orderly accounts for you, most excellent Theophilus,

4 so that you may know for certaint the things you were taught.t

Birth Announcement of John the Baptist

5 During the reignt of Herods king of Judea, there lived a priest named Zechariah who belonged tot the priestly division of Abijah,s and he had a wife named Elizabeth,t who was a descendant of Aaron.ts6 Theyt were both righteous in the sight of God, followingts all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.t

7 But they did not have a child, because Elizabeth was barren,s and they were both very old.t
8 Nowt while Zechariaht was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty,ts9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood,t to entert the holy placet of the Lord and burn incense.10 Nowt the whole crowdt of people were praying outside at the hour of the incense offering.t11 Ant angel of the Lord,t standing on the right side of the altar of incense, appeareds to him.12 And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel,t was seized with fear.t13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard,ts and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son; yout will name him John.ts14 Joy and gladness will comet to you, and many will rejoice att his birth,t15 for he will be great in the sight oft the Lord. Het must never drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth.ts16 Het will turns many of the peoplet of Israel to the Lord their God.

17 And he will go as forerunner before the Lordt in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,s to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”
18 Zechariaht said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this?t For I am an old man, and my wife is old as well.”t19 Thet angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who standst in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bringt you this good news.

20 And now,t because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time,s you will be silent, unable to speak,s until the day these things take place.”
21 Nowt the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they began to wondert why he was delayed in the holy place.t22 Whent he came out, he was not able to speak to them. Theyt realized that he had seen a visiont in the holy place,t becauset he was making signs to them and remained unable to speak.t

23 When his time of service was over,t he went to his home.
24 After some timet his wife Elizabeth became pregnant,t and for five months she kept herself in seclusion.s She said,t

25 “This is whatt the Lord has done for me at the timet when he has been gracious to me,t to take away my disgraces among people.”t

Birth Announcement of Jesus the Messiah

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy,t the angel Gabriels was sent byt God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,ss27 to a virgin engagedt to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of David,ts and the virgin’s name was Mary.28 Thet angelt camet to her and said, “Greetings, favored one,t the Lord is with you!”s29 Buts she was greatly troubleds by his words and began to wonder about the meaning of this greeting.t30 Sot the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,s Mary, for you have found favorts with God!31 Listen:t You will become pregnantt and give birth tot a son, and you will name himt Jesus.ts32 Het will be great,s and will be called the Son of the Most High,s and the Lord God will give him the throne of his fathert David.33 Het will reign over the house of Jacobts forever, and his kingdom will never end.”34 Maryt said to the angel, “How will this be, since I have not had sexual relations witht a man?”

35 The angel replied,t “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadows you. Therefore the childt to be borns will be holy;t he will be called the Son of God.
36 “And look,t your relativet Elizabeth has also become pregnant witht a son in her old age – although she was called barren, she is now in her sixth month!t37 For nothingt will be impossible with God.”

38 Sot Mary said, “Yes,t I am a servantt of the Lord; let this happen to met according to your word.”s Thent the angel departed from her.

Mary and Elizabeth

39 In those dayss Mary got up and went hurriedly into the hill country, to a town of Judah,s40 and entered Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.41 Whent Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapeds in hert womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.s42 Shet exclaimed with a loud voice,t “Blessed are you among women,s and blessed is the childt in your womb!43 And who am It that the mother of my Lord should come and visit me?44 For the instantt the sound of your greeting reached my ears,t the baby in my womb leaped for joy.s

45 And blesseds is she who believed thatt what was spoken to her byt the Lord would be fulfilled.”ts

Mary’s Hymn of Praise

46 And Marys said,s
“My soul exaltst the Lord,s

47 and my spirit has begun to rejoicet in God my Savior,

48 because he has looked upon the humble state of his servant.t
Fort from now ons all generations will call me blessed,s

49 because he who is mightyt has done great things for me, and holy is his name;

50 fromt generation to generation he is mercifuls to those who feart him.

51 He has demonstrated powert with his arm; he has scattered those whose pride wells up from the sheer arrogancet of their hearts.

52 He has brought down the mightyt from their thrones, and has lifted up those of lowly position;ts

53 he has filled the hungry with good things,s and has sent the rich away empty.s

54 He has helped his servant Israel, rememberingt his mercy,t

55 as he promisedt to our ancestors,t to Abraham and to his descendantst forever.”

56 Sot Mary stayed with Elizabetht about three monthss and then returned to her home.

The Birth of John

57 Now the time camet for Elizabeth to have her baby,t and she gave birth to a son.

58 Hert neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shownt great mercy to her, and they rejoicedt with her.
59 Ont the eighth days they came to circumcise the child, and they wanted to namet him Zechariah after his father.60 Butt his mother replied,t “No! He must be namedt John.”s61 Theyt said to her, “Butt none of your relatives bears this name.”t62 Sot they made signs to the baby’st father,s inquiring what he wanted to name his son.t63 Het asked for a writing tablets and wrote,t “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.s64 Immediatelyt Zechariah’st mouth was opened and his tongues released,t and he spoke, blessing God.65 Allts their neighbors were filled with fear, and throughout the entire hill country of Judea all these things were talked about.

66 Allt who heard these thingst kept them in their hearts,t saying, “What then will this child be?”t For the Lord’s hands was indeed with him.

Zechariah’s Praise and Prediction

67 Thent his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied,ts

68 “Blesseds be the Lord God of Israel,
because he has come to helps and has redeemedts his people.

69 Fort he has raised ups a horn of salvations for us in the house of his servant David,s

70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from long ago,t

71 that we should be savedt from our enemies,s
and from the hand of all who hate us.

72 He has done thist to show mercys to our ancestors,t
and to remember his holy covenants –

73 the oatht that he swore to our ancestort Abraham.
This oath grantst

74 that we, being rescued from the hand of ours enemies,
may serve him without fear,t

75 in holiness and righteousnesss before him for as long as we live.t

76 And you, child,s will be called the prophett of the Most High.s
For you will go befores the Lord to prepare his ways,ts

77 to give his people knowledge of salvations through the forgivenesss of their sins.

78 Because oft our God’s tender mercys
the dawns will breakt upon us from on high

79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,s
to guide our feet into the wayt of peace.”

80 And the child kept growingt and becoming strongt in spirit, and he was in the wildernesst until the day he was revealedt to Israel.
