La missione dei settanta discepoli

1 Dopo queste cose, il Signore designò altri settanta discepoli e li mandò a due a due davanti a sé in ogni città e luogo dove egli stesso stava per andare.2 E diceva loro: «La mèsse è grande, ma gli operai sono pochi; pregate dunque il Signore della mèsse perché spinga degli operai nella sua mèsse.3 Andate! Ecco, io vi mando come agnelli in mezzo ai lupi.4 Non portate né borsa, né sacca, né calzari, e non salutate nessuno per via.5 Inqualunque casa entriate, dite prima: "Pace a questa casa!"6 Se vi è lì un figlio di pace, la vostra pace riposerà su di lui; se no, ritornerà a voi.7 Rimanete in quella stessa casa, mangiando e bevendo di quello che hanno, perché l'operaio è degno del suo salario t. Non passate di casa in casa.8 Inqualunque città entriate, se vi ricevono, mangiate ciò che vi sarà messo davanti,9 guarite i malati che ci saranno e dite loro: "Il regno di Dio si è avvicinato a voi".10 Ma in qualunque città entriate, se non vi ricevono, uscite sulle piazze e dite:11 "Perfino la polvere della vostra città che si è attaccata ai nostri piedi, noi la scuotiamo contro di voi; sappiate tuttavia questo, che il regno di Dio si è avvicinato a voi".

12 Io vi dico che in quel giorno la sorte di Sodoma tsarà più tollerabile di quella di tale città.

Gesù rimprovera le città impenitenti

13 «Guai a te, Corazin! Guai a te, Betsàida! Perché se in Tiro e in Sidone fossero state fatte le opere potenti compiute tra di voi, già da tempo si sarebbero ravvedute, sedendo con sacco e cenere t.14 Perciò, nel giudizio, la sorte di Tiro e di Sidone sarà più tollerabile della vostra.

15 E tu, Capernaum t, sarai forse innalzata fino al cielo? No, tu scenderai fino all'Ades.

16 Chi ascolta voi ascolta me; chi respinge voi respinge me, e chi rifiuta me rifiuta Colui che mi ha mandato».
17 Or i settanta tornarono pieni di gioia, dicendo: «Signore, anche i demòni ci sono sottoposti nel tuo nome».18 Ed egli disse loro: «Io vedevo Satana cadere dal cielo come folgore.19 Ecco, io vi ho dato il potere di camminare sopra serpenti e scorpioni, e su tutta la potenza del nemico; nulla potrà farvi del male.

20 Tuttavia, non vi rallegrate perché gli spiriti vi sono sottoposti, ma rallegratevi perché i vostri nomi sono scritti nei cieli».
21 Inquella stessa ora, Gesù, mosso dallo Spirito Santo, esultò e disse: «Io ti rendo lode, o Padre, Signore del cielo e della terra, perché hai nascosto queste cose ai sapienti e agli intelligenti, e le hai rivelate ai piccoli! Sì, Padre, perché così ti è piaciuto!22 Ogni cosa mi è stata data in mano dal Padre mio; e nessuno sa chi è il Figlio, se non il Padre, né chi è il Padre, se non il Figlio e colui al quale il Figlio voglia rivelarlo».23 E, rivolgendosi ai discepoli, disse loro privatamente: «Beati gli occhi che vedono quello che voi vedete!

24 Perché vi dico che molti profeti e re hanno desiderato vedere quello che voi vedete, e non l'hanno visto; e udire quello che voi udite, e non l'hanno udito».

Il buon Samaritano

25 Ed ecco, un dottore della legge si alzò per metterlo alla prova, dicendo: «Maestro, che devo fare per ereditare la vita eterna?»26 Gesù gli disse: «Nella legge che cosa sta scritto? Come leggi?»27 Egli rispose: «Ama il Signore Dio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta l'anima tua, con tutta la forza tua, con tutta la mente tua, e il tuo prossimo come te stesso t».28 Gesù gli disse: «Hai risposto esattamente; fa' questo e vivrai».29 Ma egli, volendo giustificarsi, disse a Gesù: «E chi è il mio prossimo?»30 Gesù rispose: «Un uomo scendeva da Gerusalemme a Gerico e s'imbatté nei briganti, che lo spogliarono, lo ferirono e poi se ne andarono, lasciandolo mezzo morto.31 Per caso un sacerdote scendeva per quella stessa strada, ma quando lo vide, passò oltre dal lato opposto.32 Così pure un Levita, quando giunse in quel luogo e lo vide, passò oltre dal lato opposto.33 Ma un Samaritano, che era in viaggio, giunse presso di lui e, vedendolo, ne ebbe pietà;34 avvicinatosi, fasciò le sue piaghe versandovi sopra olio e vino, poi lo mise sulla propria cavalcatura, lo condusse a una locanda e si prese cura di lui.35 Il giorno dopo, presi due denari, li diede all'oste e gli disse: "Prenditi cura di lui; e tutto ciò che spenderai di più, te lo rimborserò al mio ritorno".36 Quale di questi tre ti pare essere stato il prossimo di colui che s'imbatté nei ladroni?»

37 Quegli rispose: «Colui che gli usò misericordia». Gesù gli disse: «Va', e fa' anche tu la stessa cosa».

Marta e Maria

38 Mentre erano in cammino, Gesù entrò in un villaggio; e una donna, di nome Marta, lo ospitò in casa sua.39 Marta aveva una sorella chiamata Maria, la quale, sedutasi ai piedi del Signore, ascoltava la sua parola.40 Ma Marta, tutta presa dalle faccende domestiche, venne e disse: «Signore, non ti importa che mia sorella mi abbia lasciata sola a servire? Dille dunque che mi aiuti».41 Ma il Signore le rispose: «Marta, Marta, tu ti affanni e sei agitata per molte cose, ma una cosa sola è necessaria.

42 Maria ha scelto la parte buona che non le sarà tolta».

LUKE 10

The Work //of the Seventy-Two Followers

1 Later the Lord chose 72 t other followers and sent them out two by two to every town and village where he was about to go.

2 t He said to them:
A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in. 3 t Now go, but remember, I am sending you like lambs into a pack of wolves. 4 t Don't take along a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals. And don't waste time greeting people on the road.t 5 As soon as you enter a home, say, “God bless this home with peace.” 6 If the people living there are peace-loving, your prayer for peace will bless them. But if they are not peace-loving, your prayer will return to you.

7 t Stay with the same family, eating and drinking whatever they give you, because workers are worth what they earn. Don't move around from house to house.
8 If the people of a town welcome you, eat whatever they offer.

9 Heal their sick and say, “God's kingdom will soon be here!”t
10  t But if the people of a town refuse to welcome you, go out into the street and say, 11 “We are shaking the dust from our feett as a warning to you. And you can be sure that God's kingdom will soon be here!”t

12 t I tell you that on the day of judgment the people of Sodom will get off easier than the people of that town!

The Unbelieving Towns

(Matthew 11.20-24)

15 t People of Capernaum, do you think you will be honored in heaven? Well, you will go down to hell!

16  t My followers, whoever listens to you is listening to me. Anyone who says “No” to you is saying “No” to me. And anyone who says “No” to me is really saying “No” to the one who sent me.

The Return of the Seventy-Two

17 When the 72t followers returned, they were excited and said, “Lord, even the demons obeyed when we spoke in your name!”

18 Jesus told them:
I saw Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19 t I have given you the power to trample on snakes and scorpions and to defeat the power of your enemy Satan. Nothing can harm you.

20 But don't be happy because evil spirits obey you. Be happy that your names are written in heaven!

Jesus Thanks His Father

(Matthew 11.25-27; 13.16,17)

21 At that same time, Jesus felt the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, t and he said:
My Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am grateful that you hid all this from wise and educated people and showed it to ordinary people. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.

22  t My Father has given me everything, and he is the only one who knows the Son. The only one who really knows the Father is the Son. But the Son wants to tell others about the Father, so they can know him too.
23 Jesus then turned to his disciples and said to them in private, “You are really blessed to see what you see!

24 Many prophets and kings were eager to see what you see and to hear what you hear. But I tell you they did not see or hear.”

The Good Samaritan

25  t An expert in the Law of Moses stood up and asked Jesus a question to see what he would say. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to have eternal life?”

26 Jesus answered, “What is written in the Scriptures? How do you understand them?”

27  t The man replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind.’ They also say, ‘Love your neighbors as much as you love yourself.’ ”

28  t Jesus said, “You have given the right answer. If you do this, you will have eternal life.”

29 But the man wanted to show that he knew what he was talking about. So he asked Jesus, “Who are my neighbors?”

30 Jesus replied:
As a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, robbers attacked him and grabbed everything he had. They beat him up and ran off, leaving him half dead.
31 A priest happened to be going down the same road. But when he saw the man, he walked by on the other side.

32 Later a temple helpert came to the same place. But when he saw the man who had been beaten up, he also went by on the other side.
33  t A man from Samaria then came traveling along that road. When he saw the man, he felt sorry for him 34 and went over to him. He treated his wounds with olive oil and winet and bandaged them. Then he put him on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.

35 The next morning he gave the innkeeper two silver coins and said, “Please take care of the man. If you spend more than this on him, I will pay you when I return.”

36 Then Jesus asked, “Which one of these three people was a real neighbor to the man who was beaten up by robbers?”

37 The expert in the Law of Moses answered, “The one who showed pity.”
Jesus said, “Go and do the same!”

Martha and Mary

40 Martha was worried about all that had to be done. Finally, she went to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn't it bother you that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!”
41 The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, 42 but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.”
