Jesús y la oración

1 Una vez, Jesús estaba orando en un lugar; cuando terminó, uno de sus discípulos le dijo:
—Señor, enséñanos a orar, así como Juan enseñó a sus discípulos.2 Jesús les dijo:
—Cuando oren, digan:

“Padre, santificado sea tu nombre.
Venga tu reino.3 Danos cada día el pan que necesitamos.4 Perdónanos nuestros pecados,
porque también nosotros perdonamos
a todos los que nos han hecho mal.
No nos expongas a la tentación.”5 También les dijo Jesús:
—Supongamos que uno de ustedes tiene un amigo, y que a medianoche va a su casa y le dice: “Amigo, préstame tres panes,6 porque un amigo mío acaba de llegar de viaje a mi casa, y no tengo nada que darle.”7 Sin duda el otro no le contestará desde adentro: “No me molestes; la puerta está cerrada, y mis hijos y yo ya estamos acostados; no puedo levantarme a darte nada.”8 Les digo que, aunque no se levante a darle algo por ser su amigo, lo hará por su impertinencia, y le dará todo lo que necesita.9 Así que yo les digo: Pidan, y Dios les dará; busquen, y encontrarán; llamen a la puerta, y se les abrirá.10 Porque el que pide, recibe; y el que busca, encuentra; y al que llama a la puerta, se le abre.11 «¿Acaso alguno de ustedes, que sea padre, sería capaz de darle a su hijo una culebra cuando le pide pescado,12 o de darle un alacrán cuando le pide un huevo?13 Pues si ustedes, que son malos, saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más el Padre celestial dará el Espíritu Santo a quienes se lo pidan!»

Acusación contra Jesús

14 Jesús estaba expulsando un demonio que había dejado mudo a un hombre; y cuando el demonio salió, el mudo comenzó a hablar. La gente se admiró de esto,15 pero algunos dijeron: «Beelzebú, el jefe de los demonios, es quien ha dado a este hombre el poder de expulsarlos.»16 Otros, para tenderle una trampa, le pidieron una señal milagrosa del cielo.17 Pero él, que sabía lo que estaban pensando, les dijo:
«Todo país dividido en bandos enemigos, se destruye a sí mismo y todas sus casas se derrumban una sobre otra.18 Así también, si Satanás se divide contra sí mismo, ¿cómo mantendrá su poder? Esto lo digo porque ustedes afirman que yo expulso los demonios por el poder de Beelzebú;19 pero si es así, ¿quién da a los seguidores de ustedes el poder para expulsarlos? Por eso, ellos mismos los condenarán a ustedes.20 Porque si yo expulso los demonios por la mano de Dios, eso significa que el reino de Dios ya ha llegado a ustedes.21 »Cuando un hombre fuerte está bien armado y cuida su casa, lo que en ella guarda está seguro.22 Pero si otro más fuerte que él viene y lo vence, le quita las armas en que confía, y sus pertenencias, y dispone de ellas.23 »El que no está a mi favor, está en contra mía, y el que conmigo no recoge, desparrama.

El espíritu impuro que regresa

24 »Cuando un espíritu impuro sale de un hombre, anda por lugares secos buscando descanso; pero, al no encontrarlo, piensa: “Volveré a mi casa, de donde salí.”25 Cuando regresa, encuentra a ese hombre como una casa barrida y arreglada.26 Entonces va y reúne otros siete espíritus peores que él, y todos juntos se meten a vivir en aquel hombre, que al final queda peor que al principio.»

Lo que realmente cuenta

27 Mientras Jesús decía estas cosas, una mujer entre la gente gritó:
—¡Dichosa la mujer que te dio a luz y te crió!28 Él contestó:
—¡Dichosos más bien quienes escuchan lo que Dios dice, y lo obedecen!

Algunos piden una señal milagrosa

29 La multitud seguía juntándose alrededor de Jesús, y él comenzó a decirles: «La gente de este tiempo es malvada; pide una señal milagrosa, pero no va a dársele más señal que la de Jonás.30 Pues así como Jonás fue una señal para la gente de Nínive, también el Hijo del hombre será una señal para la gente de este tiempo.31 En el día del juicio, cuando se juzgue a la gente de este tiempo, la reina del Sur se levantará y la condenará; porque ella vino de lo más lejano de la tierra para escuchar la sabiduría de Salomón, y lo que hay aquí es mayor que Salomón.32 También los de Nínive se levantarán en el día del juicio, cuando se juzgue a la gente de este tiempo, y la condenarán; porque los de Nínive se volvieron a Dios cuando oyeron el mensaje de Jonás, y lo que hay aquí es mayor que Jonás.

La lámpara del cuerpo

33 »Nadie enciende una lámpara y la pone en un lugar escondido, ni bajo un cajón, sino en alto, para que los que entran tengan luz.34 Tus ojos son la lámpara del cuerpo; si tus ojos son buenos, todo tu cuerpo tendrá luz; pero si son malos, tu cuerpo estará en la oscuridad.35 Ten cuidado de que la luz que hay en ti no resulte oscuridad.36 Pues si todo tu cuerpo tiene luz y no hay en él ninguna oscuridad, lo verás todo claramente, como cuando una lámpara te alumbra con su luz.»

Jesús denuncia a los fariseos y a los maestros de la ley

37 Cuando Jesús dejó de hablar, un fariseo lo invitó a comer en su casa, y Jesús entró y se sentó a la mesa.38 El fariseo se extrañó al ver que no había cumplido con la ceremonia de lavarse antes de comer.39 Pero el Señor le dijo:
—Ustedes los fariseos limpian por fuera el vaso y el plato, pero por dentro ustedes están llenos de lo que han conseguido por medio del robo y la maldad.40 ¡Necios! ¿No saben que el que hizo lo de fuera, hizo también lo de dentro?41 Den ustedes sus limosnas de lo que está dentro, y así todo quedará limpio.42 »¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos!, que separan para Dios la décima parte de la menta, de la ruda y de toda clase de legumbres, pero no hacen caso de la justicia y el amor a Dios. Esto es lo que deben hacer, sin dejar de hacer lo otro.43 »¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos!, que quieren tener los asientos de honor en las sinagogas, y que desean que la gente los salude con todo respeto en las calles.44 »¡Ay de ustedes, que son como sepulcros ocultos a la vista, los cuales la gente pisa sin saberlo!45 Le contestó entonces uno de los maestros de la ley:
—Maestro, al decir esto nos ofendes también a nosotros.46 Pero Jesús dijo:
—¡Ay de ustedes también, maestros de la ley!, que cargan sobre los demás cargas que nadie puede soportar, y ustedes ni siquiera con un dedo quieren tocarlas.47 »¡Ay de ustedes!, que construyen los sepulcros de los profetas a quienes los antepasados de ustedes mataron.48 Con eso dan a entender que están de acuerdo con lo que sus antepasados hicieron, pues ellos los mataron y ustedes construyen sus sepulcros.49 »Por eso, Dios en su sabiduría dijo: “Les mandaré profetas y apóstoles, y matarán a algunos de ellos y perseguirán a otros.”50 Pues a la gente de hoy Dios le va a pedir cuentas de la sangre de todos los profetas, que ha sido derramada desde que se hizo el mundo,51 desde la sangre de Abel hasta la de Zacarías, a quien mataron entre el altar y el santuario. Por lo tanto, les digo que Dios pedirá cuentas de la muerte de ellos a la gente de hoy.52 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley!, que se han apoderado de la llave del conocimiento; pero ni ustedes mismos entran ni dejan entrar a los que quieren hacerlo.53 Cuando Jesús salió de allí, los maestros de la ley y los fariseos se enojaron mucho, y comenzaron a molestarlo con muchas preguntas,54 tendiéndole trampas para atraparlo en sus propias palabras.

Luke 11

1 And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples.2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Father, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.3 Give us day by day our daily bread.4 And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation.5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves;6 for a friend of mine is come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him;7 and he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee?8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will arise and give him as many as he needeth.9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.11 And of which of you that is a father shall his son ask a loaf, and he give him a stone? or a fish, and he for a fish give him a serpent?12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he give him a scorpion?13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?14 And he was casting out a demon that was dumb. And it came to pass, when the demon was gone out, the dumb man spake; and the multitudes marvelled.15 But some of them said, By Beelzebub the prince of the demons casteth he out demons.16 And others, trying him, sought of him a sign from heaven.17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub.19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.20 But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.21 When the strong man fully armed guardeth his own court, his goods are in peace:22 but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him his whole armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.23 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.24 The unclean spirit when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest, and finding none, he saith, I will turn back unto my house whence I came out.25 And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished.26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more evil than himself; and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first.27 And it came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck.28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.29 And when the multitudes were gathering together unto him, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation: it seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah.30 For even as Jonah became a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.32 The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.33 No man, when he hath lighted a lamp, putteth it in a cellar, neither under the bushel, but on the stand, that they which enter in may see the light.34 The lamp of thy body is thine eye: when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when it is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.35 Look therefore whether the light that is in thee be not darkness.36 If therefore thy whole body be full of light, having no part dark, it shall be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining doth give thee light.37 Now as he spake, a Pharisee asketh him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first bathed himself before dinner.39 And the Lord said unto him, Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.40 Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also?41 But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, all things are clean unto you.42 But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over justice and the love of God: but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.43 Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces.44 Woe unto you! for ye are as the tombs which appear not, and the men that walk over them know it not.45 And one of the lawyers answering saith unto him, Teacher, in saying this thou reproachest us also.46 And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.47 Woe unto you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.48 So ye are witnesses and consent unto the works of your fathers: for they killed them, and ye build their tombs.49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles; and some of them they shall kill and persecute;50 that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;51 from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary: yea, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation.52 Woe unto you lawyers! for ye took away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.53 And when he was come out from thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things;54 laying wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth.
