Luca 11

Istruzioni di Gesù sulla preghiera

1 Gesù si trovava in un certo luogo a pregare e, quando ebbe finito, uno dei suoi discepoli gli disse: «Signore, insegnaci a pregare come anche Giovanni ha insegnato ai suoi discepoli».2 Egli disse loro: «Quando pregate, dite: "Padre, sia santificato il tuo nome; venga il tuo regno;3 dacci ogni giorno il nostro pane quotidiano,

4 e perdonaci i nostri peccati, perché anche noi perdoniamo a ogni nostro debitore; e non ci esporre alla tentazione"».
5 Poi disse loro: «Se uno di voi ha un amico, e va da lui a mezzanotte e gli dice: "Amico, prestami tre pani,6 perché mi è arrivato un amico da un viaggio e non ho nulla da mettergli davanti";7 e se quello dal di dentro gli risponde: "Non darmi fastidio; la porta è già chiusa e i miei bambini sono con me a letto, io non posso alzarmi per darteli",8 io vi dico che se anche non si alzasse a darglieli perché gli è amico, tuttavia, per la sua importunità, si alzerà e gli darà tutto ciò di cui ha bisogno.9 Io altresì vi dico: chiedete e vi sarà dato; cercate e troverete; bussate e vi sarà aperto.10 Perché chiunque chiede riceve, chi cerca trova, e sarà aperto a chi bussa.11 E chi è quel padre fra di voi che, se il figlio gli chiede un pesce, gli dia invece un serpente?12 Oppure se gli chiede un uovo, gli dia uno scorpione?

13 Se voi, dunque, che siete malvagi, sapete dare buoni doni ai vostri figli, quanto più il Padre celeste donerà lo Spirito Santo a coloro che glielo chiedono!»

Guarigione di un indemoniato

14 Gesù stava scacciando un demonio {che era muto}; e, quando il demonio fu uscito, il muto parlò e la folla si stupì.15 Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «È per l'aiuto di Belzebù t, principe dei demòni, che egli scaccia i demòni».16 Altri, per metterlo alla prova, gli chiedevano un segno dal cielo.17 Ma egli, conoscendo i loro pensieri, disse loro: «Ogni regno diviso contro se stesso va in rovina, e casa crolla su casa.18 Se dunque anche Satana è diviso contro se stesso, come potrà reggere il suo regno? Poiché voi dite che è per l'aiuto di Belzebù che io scaccio i demòni.19 E se io scaccio i demòni con l'aiuto di Belzebù, con l'aiuto di chi li scacciano i vostri figli? Perciò, essi stessi saranno i vostri giudici.20 Ma se è con il dito di Dio che io scaccio i demòni, allora il regno di Dio è giunto fino a voi.21 Quando l'uomo forte, ben armato, guarda l'ingresso della sua casa, ciò che egli possiede è al sicuro;22 ma quando uno più forte di lui sopraggiunge e lo vince, gli toglie tutta l'armatura nella quale confidava e ne divide il bottino.

23 Chi non è con me è contro di me, e chi non raccoglie con me disperde.

Il ritorno dello spirito immondo

24 «Quando lo spirito immondo esce da un uomo, si aggira per luoghi aridi, cercando riposo; e, non trovandone, dice: "Ritornerò nella mia casa, dalla quale sono uscito";25 e, quando ci arriva, la trova spazzata e adorna.

26 Allora va e prende con sé altri sette spiriti peggiori di lui, ed entrano ad abitarla; e l'ultima condizione di quell'uomo diventa peggiore della prima».
27 Mentre egli diceva queste cose, dalla folla una donna alzò la voce e gli disse: «Beato il grembo che ti portò e le mammelle che tu poppasti!» Ma egli disse:

28 «Beati piuttosto quelli che ascoltano la parola di Dio e la osservano!»

Il segno del profeta Giona

29 Mentre la gente si affollava intorno a lui, egli cominciò a dire: «Questa generazione è una generazione malvagia; chiede un segno, ma segno non le sarà dato, se non il segno di Giona.30 Infatti, come Giona fu un segno per i Niniviti, così anche il Figlio dell'uomo lo sarà per questa generazione.31 La regina del mezzogiorno tcomparirà nel giudizio con gli uomini di questa generazione e li condannerà, perché ella venne dalle estremità della terra per udire la sapienza di Salomone; ed ecco, qui c'è più di Salomone.

32 I Niniviti compariranno nel giudizio con questa generazione e la condanneranno, perché essi si ravvidero alla predicazione di Giona; ed ecco, qui c'è più di Giona.

Parabola della lampada e dell'occhio

33 «Nessuno, quando ha acceso una lampada, la mette in un luogo nascosto {o sotto un recipiente}, anzi la mette sul candeliere, perché coloro che entrano vedano la luce.34 La lampada del corpo è l'occhio; se l'occhio tuo è limpido, anche tutto il tuo corpo è illuminato, ma se è malvagio, anche il tuo corpo è nelle tenebre.35 Sta quindi attento che la luce che è in te non sia tenebre.

36 Se dunque tutto il tuo corpo è illuminato, senza avere alcuna parte tenebrosa, sarà tutto illuminato come quando la lampada ti illumina con il suo splendore».

Gesù condanna i farisei

37 Mentre egli parlava, un fariseo lo invitò a pranzo da lui. Egli entrò e si mise a tavola.38 Il fariseo, veduto questo, si meravigliò che non si fosse lavato prima del pranzo.39 Il Signore gli disse: «Voi farisei pulite l'esterno della coppa e del piatto, ma il vostro interno è pieno di rapina e di malvagità.40 Stolti, Colui che ha fatto l'esterno non ha fatto anche l'interno?

41 Date piuttosto in elemosina quello che è dentro il piatto; e ogni cosa sarà pura per voi.

42 Ma guai a voi, farisei, perché pagate la decima della menta, della ruta e di ogni erba, e trascurate la giustizia e l'amore di Dio! Queste sono le cose che bisognava fare, senza trascurare le altre.

43 Guai a voi, farisei, perché amate i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe e i saluti nelle piazze.

44 Guai a voi, perché siete come quei sepolcri che non si vedono, e le persone vi camminano sopra senza saperlo».
45 Allora uno dei dottori della legge, rispondendo, gli disse: «Maestro, parlando così, offendi anche noi».

46 Ed egli disse: «Guai anche a voi, dottori della legge, perché caricate la gente di pesi difficili da portare, e voi non toccate quei pesi neppure con un dito!
47 Guai a voi, perché costruite i sepolcri dei profeti, e i vostri padri li uccisero.48 Voi dunque testimoniate delle opere dei vostri padri e le approvate; perché essi li uccisero e voi costruite i loro sepolcri.49 Per questo la sapienza di Dio ha detto: "Io manderò loro dei profeti e degli apostoli; ne uccideranno alcuni e ne perseguiteranno altri",50 affinché del sangue di tutti i profeti sparso fin dalla fondazione del mondo sia chiesto conto a questa generazione:

51 dal sangue di Abele fino al sangue di Zaccaria, che fu ucciso tra l'altare e il tempio; sì, vi dico, ne sarà chiesto conto a questa generazione.

52 Guai a voi, dottori della legge, perché avete portato via la chiave della conoscenza! Voi non siete entrati, e a quelli che volevano entrare lo avete impedito».
53 E quando fu uscito di là, gli scribi e i farisei cominciarono a contrastarlo duramente e a fargli domande su molte cose, tendendogli insidie,

54 per cogliere qualche parola che gli uscisse di bocca.

LUKE 11

Prayer

(Matthew 6.9-13; 7.7-11)

1 When Jesus had finished praying, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his followers to pray.”

2 So Jesus told them, “Pray in this way:
‘Father, help us
to honor your name.
Come and set up
your kingdom.

3 Give us each day
the food we need.t

4 Forgive our sins,
as we forgive everyone
who has done wrong to us.
And keep us
from being tempted.’ ”

5 Then Jesus went on to say:
Suppose one of you goes to a friend in the middle of the night and says, “Let me borrow three loaves of bread. 6 A friend of mine has dropped in, and I don't have a thing for him to eat.”

7 And suppose your friend answers, “Don't bother me! The door is bolted, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you something.”

8 He may not get up and give you the bread, just because you are his friend. But he will get up and give you as much as you need, simply because you are not ashamed to keep on asking.
9 So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. 10 Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. 11 Which one of you fathers would give your hungry child a snake if the child asked for a fish? 12 Which one of you would give your child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg?

13 As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks.

Jesus and the Ruler //of Demons

(Matthew 12.22-30; Mark 3.20-27)

15 t But some people said, “He forces out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons!”
16  t Others wanted to put Jesus to the test. So they asked him to show them a sign from God.

17 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said:
A kingdom where people fight each other will end up in ruin. And a family that fights will break up. 18 If Satan fights against himself, how can his kingdom last? Yet you say that I force out demons by the power of Beelzebul. 19 If I use his power to force out demons, whose power do your own followers use to force them out? They are the ones who will judge you.

20 But if I use God's power to force out demons, it proves that God's kingdom has already come to you.
21 When a strong man arms himself and guards his home, everything he owns is safe. 22 But if a stronger man comes and defeats him, he will carry off the weapons in which the strong man trusted. Then he will divide with others what he has taken.

23 t If you are not on my side, you are against me. If you don't gather in the crop with me, you scatter it.

Return of an Evil Spirit

(Matthew 12.43-45)

26 it goes off and finds seven other evil spirits even worse than itself. They all come and make their home there, and that person ends up in worse shape than before.

Being Really Blessed

27 While Jesus was still talking, a woman in the crowd spoke up, “The woman who gave birth to you and nursed you is blessed!”

28 Jesus replied, “That's true, but the people who are really blessed are the ones who hear and obey God's message!”t

A Sign from God

(Matthew 12.38-42; Mark 8.12)

29  t As crowds were gathering around Jesus, he said:
You people of today are evil! You keep looking for a sign from God. But what happened to Jonaht is the only sign you will be given. 30 t Just as Jonah was a sign to the people of Nineveh, the Son of Man will be a sign to the people of today. 31 t When the judgment comes, the Queen of the Southt will stand there with you and condemn you. She traveled a long way to hear Solomon's wisdom, and yet here is something far greater than Solomon.

32 t The people of Nineveh will also stand there with you and condemn you. They turned to God when Jonah preached, and yet here is something far greater than Jonah.

Light

(Matthew 5.15; 6.22,23)

36 If you have light, and nothing is dark, then light will be everywhere, as when a lamp shines brightly on you.

Jesus Condemns the Pharisees //and Teachers of the Law of Moses

(Matthew 23.1-36; Mark 12.38-40; Luke 20.45-47)

39 So the Lord said to him:
You Pharisees clean the outside of cups and dishes, but on the inside you are greedy and evil. 40 You fools! Didn't God make both the outside and the inside?t

41 If you would only give what you have to the poor, everything you do would please God.

42  t You Pharisees are in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your gardens, such as mint and rue. But you cheat people, and you don't love God. You should be fair and kind to others and still give a tenth to God.
43 You Pharisees are in for trouble! You love the front seats in the synagogues, and you like to be greeted with honor in the market.

44 But you are in for trouble! You are like unmarked gravest that people walk on without even knowing it.

45 A teacher of the Law of Moses spoke up, “Teacher, you said cruel things about us.”

46 Jesus replied:
You teachers are also in for trouble! You load people down with heavy burdens, but you won't lift a finger to help them carry the loads. 47 Yes, you are really in for trouble. You build monuments to honor the prophets your own people murdered long ago.

48 You must think that was the right thing for your people to do, or else you would not have built monuments for the prophets they murdered.
49 Because of your evil deeds, the Wisdom of God said, “I will send prophets and apostles to you. But you will murder some and mistreat others.” 50 You people living today will be punished for all the prophets who have been murdered since the beginning of the world.

51 t This includes every prophet from the time of Abel to the time of Zechariah, t who was murdered between the altar and the temple. You people will certainly be punished for all of this.

52 You teachers of the Law of Moses are really in for trouble! You carry the keys to the door of knowledge about God. But you never go in, and you keep others from going in.
53 Jesus was about to leave, but the teachers and the Pharisees wanted to get even with him. They tried to make him say what he thought about other things, 54 so they could catch him saying something wrong.
