Une mise en garde contre l’hypocrisie

1 Pendant ce temps, les gens s’étaient assemblés par milliers, au point qu’ils se marchaient sur les pieds les uns des autres. Jésus s’adressa d’abord à ses disciples : « Gardez-vous, leur dit-il, du levain des Pharisiens, c’est-à-dire de leur hypocrisie. 2 Tout ce qui est caché sera découvert, et tout ce qui est secret sera connu.
3 C’est pourquoi tout ce que vous aurez dit dans l’obscurité sera entendu à la lumière du jour, et ce que vous aurez murmuré à l’oreille d’autrui dans une chambre fermée sera crié du haut des toits. »Celui qu’il faut craindre

4 « Je vous le dis, à vous mes amis : ne craignez pas ceux qui tuent le corps mais qui, ensuite, ne peuvent rien faire de plus.
5 Je vais vous montrer qui vous devez craindre : craignez Dieu qui, après la mort, a le pouvoir de vous jeter en enfert. Oui, je vous le dis, c’est lui que vous devez craindre !
6 « Ne vend-on pas cinq moineaux pour deux sous ? Cependant, Dieu n’en oublie pas un seul.
7 Et même vos cheveux sont tous comptés. N’ayez donc pas peur : vous valez plus que beaucoup de moineaux ! »Confesser ou renier Jésus-Christ

8 « Je vous le dis : quiconque reconnaît publiquement qu’il est mon disciple, le Fils de l’homme aussi reconnaîtra devant les anges de Dieu qu’il est à lui ; 9 mais si quelqu’un affirme publiquement ne pas me connaîtret, le Fils de l’homme aussi affirmera devant les anges de Dieu qu’il ne le connaît pas.
10 Quiconque dira une parole contre le Fils de l’homme sera pardonné ; mais celui qui aura fait insulte au Saint-Esprit ne recevra pas de pardon.
11 « Quand on vous conduira pour être jugés dans les synagogues, ou devant les dirigeants ou les autorités, ne vous inquiétez pas de la manière dont vous vous défendrez ou de ce que vous aurez à dire,
12 car le Saint-Esprit vous enseignera à ce moment-là ce que vous devez exprimer. »La parabole du riche insensé
13 Quelqu’un dans la foule dit à Jésus : « Maître, dis à mon frère de partager avec moi les biens que notre père nous a laissés. » 14 Jésus lui répondit : « Mon ami, qui m’a établi pour juger vos affaires ou pour partager vos biens ? »
15 Puis il dit à tous : « Attention ! Gardez-vous de tout amour des richesses, car la vie d’un homme ne dépend pas de ses biens, même s’il est très riche. »
16 Il leur raconta alors cette parabole : « Un homme riche avait des terres qui lui rapportèrent de bonnes récoltes. 17 Il réfléchissait et se demandait : “Que vais-je faire ? Je n’ai pas de place où amasser toutes mes récoltes.” 18 Puis il ajouta : “Voici ce que je vais faire : je vais démolir mes greniers, j’en construirai de plus grands, j’y amasserai tout mon blé et mes autres biens. 19 Ensuite, je me dirai à moi-même : Mon cher, tu as des biens en abondance pour de nombreuses années ; repose-toi, mange, bois et jouis de la vie.” 20 Mais Dieu lui dit : “Insensé ! Cette nuit même tu cesseras de vivre. Et alors, pour qui sera tout ce que tu as accumulé ?” »
21 Jésus ajouta : « Ainsi en est-il de celui qui amasse des richesses pour lui-même, mais qui n’est pas riche aux yeux de Dieut. »Avoir confiance en Dieu

22 Puis Jésus dit à ses disciples : « Voilà pourquoi je vous dis : Ne vous inquiétez pas au sujet de la nourriture dont vous avez besoin pour vivre, ou au sujet des vêtements dont vous avez besoin pour votre corps. 23 Car la vie est plus importante que la nourriture et le corps plus important que les vêtements. 24 Regardez les corbeaux : ils ne sèment ni ne moissonnent, ils n’ont ni cave à provisions ni grenier, mais Dieu les nourrit ! Vous valez beaucoup plus que les oiseaux ! 25 Qui d’entre vous parvient à prolonger un peu la durée de sa viet par le souci qu’il se fait ? 26 Si donc vous ne pouvez rien pour ce qui est très peu de chose, pourquoi vous inquiétez-vous au sujet du reste ? 27 Regardez comment poussent les fleurs des champs : elles ne travaillent pas et ne tissent pas de vêtements. Pourtant, je vous le dis, même Salomon, avec toute sa richesse, n’a pas eu de vêtements aussi beaux qu’une seule de ces fleurst. 28 Dieu revêt ainsi l’herbe des champs qui est là aujourd’hui et qui demain sera jetée au feu : à combien plus forte raison vous vêtira-t-il vous-mêmes ! Comme votre confiance en lui est faible ! 29 Ne vous tourmentez donc pas à chercher continuellement ce que vous allez manger et boire. 30 Ce sont les païens de ce monde qui recherchent sans arrêt tout cela. Mais vous, vous avez un Père qui sait que vous en avez besoin.
31 Préoccupez-vous plutôt du Royaume de Dieu et Dieu vous accordera aussi le reste. »Des richesses dans le ciel

32 « N’aie pas peur, petit troupeau ! Car il a plu à votre Père de vous donner le Royaume. 33 Vendez vos biens et donnez l’argent aux pauvres. Munissez-vous de bourses qui ne s’usent pas, amassez-vous des richesses dans les cieux, où elles ne disparaîtront jamais : les voleurs ne peuvent pas les y atteindre ni les vers les détruire.
34 Car votre cœur sera toujours là où sont vos richesses. »Des serviteurs qui veillent
35 « Soyez prêts à agir, avec la ceinture serrée autour de la taille et vos lampes allumées. 36 Soyez comme des serviteurs qui attendent leur maître au moment où il va revenir d’un mariage, afin de lui ouvrir la porte dès qu’il arrivera et frappera. 37 Heureux ces serviteurs que le maître, à son arrivée, trouvera éveillés ! Je vous le déclare, c’est la vérité : il attachera sa ceinture, les fera prendre place à table et viendra les servir.
38 S’il revient à minuit ou même plus tard encore et qu’il les trouve éveillés, heureux sont-ils !
39 « Comprenez bien ceci : si le maître de la maison savait à quelle heure le voleur doit venir, il ne le laisserait pas pénétrer dans la maison.
40 Tenez-vous prêts, vous aussi, car le Fils de l’homme viendra à l’heure que vous ne pensez pas. »Le serviteur fidèle et le serviteur infidèle

41 Alors Pierre demanda : « Seigneur, dis-tu cette parabole pour nous seulement ou bien pour tout le monde ? »
42 Le Seigneur répondit : « Quel est donc le serviteur fidèle et intelligent ? En voici un que son maître va charger de veiller sur la maison et de donner aux autres serviteurs leur part de nourriture au moment voulu. 43 Heureux ce serviteur si le maître, à son retour chez lui, le trouve occupé à ce travail ! 44 Je vous le déclare, c’est la vérité : le maître lui confiera la charge de tous ses biens. 45 Mais si le serviteur se dit : “Mon maître tarde à revenir”, s’il se met alors à battre les autres serviteurs et les servantes, s’il mange, boit et s’enivre, 46 alors le maître reviendra un jour où le serviteur ne l’attend pas et à une heure qu’il ne connaît pas ; il chassera le serviteurt et lui fera partager le sort des infidèles. 47 Le serviteur qui sait ce que veut son maître, mais ne se tient pas prêt à le faire, recevra de nombreux coups.
48 Par contre, le serviteur qui ne sait pas ce que veut son maître et agit de telle façon qu’il mérite d’être battu, recevra peu de coups. A qui l’on a beaucoup donné, on demandera beaucoup ; à qui l’on a confié beaucoup, on demandera encore plus. »Jésus, cause de division

49 « Je suis venu apporter un feu sur la terret et combien je voudrais qu’il soit déjà allumé ! 50 Je dois recevoir un baptême et quelle angoisse pour moi jusqu’à ce qu’il soit accompli ! 51 Pensez-vous que je sois venu apporter la paix sur la terre ? Non, je vous le dis, mais la division. 52 Dès maintenant, une famille de cinq personnes sera divisée, trois contre deux et deux contre trois.
53 Le père sera contre son fils et le fils contre son père, la mère contre sa fille et la fille contre sa mère, la belle-mère contre sa belle-fille et la belle-fille contre sa belle-mèret. »Comprendre le sens des temps

54 Jésus disait aussi à la foule : « Quand vous voyez un nuage se lever à l’ouest, vous dites aussitôt : “Il va pleuvoir”, et c’est ce qui arrive. 55 Et quand vous sentez souffler le vent du sud, vous dites : “Il va faire chaud”, et c’est ce qui arrive.
56 Hypocrites ! Vous êtes capables de comprendre ce que signifient les aspects de la terre et du ciel ; alors, pourquoi ne comprenez-vous pas le sens du temps présent ? »Trouver un arrangement avec son adversaire

57 « Pourquoi ne jugez-vous pas par vous-mêmes de la juste façon d’agir ? 58 Si tu es en procès avec quelqu’un et que vous alliez ensemble au tribunal, efforce-toi de trouver un arrangement avec lui pendant que vous êtes en chemin. Tu éviteras ainsi que ton adversaire ne te traîne devant le juge, que le juge ne te livre à la police et que la police ne te jette en prison. 59 Tu ne sortiras pas de là, je te l’affirme, tant que tu n’auras pas payé ta dette jusqu’au dernier centime. »

1 In the mean time, when the many thousands of the multitude were gathered together, insomuch that they trod one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.2 But there is nothing covered up, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.3 Wherefore whatsoever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light; and what ye have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.5 But I will warn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, who after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pence? and not one of them is forgotten in the sight of God.7 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not: ye are of more value than many sparrows.8 And I say unto you, Every one who shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God:9 but he that denieth me in the presence of men shall be denied in the presence of the angels of God.10 And every one who shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Spirit it shall not be forgiven.11 And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, be not anxious how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:12 for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say.13 And one out of the multitude said unto him, Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.14 But he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:17 and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits?18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.20 But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.23 For the life is more than the food, and the body than the raiment.24 Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap; which have no store-chamber nor barn; and God feedeth them: of how much more value are ye than the birds!25 And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit unto the measure of his life?26 If then ye are not able to do even that which is least, why are ye anxious concerning the rest?27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.28 But if God doth so clothe the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more shall he clothe you, O ye of little faith?29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.31 Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you.32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.33 Sell that which ye have, and give alms; make for yourselves purses which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief draweth near, neither moth destroyeth.34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning;36 and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him.37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them.38 And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so blessed are those servants.39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.40 Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.41 And Peter said, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all?42 And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?43 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.44 Of a truth I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.45 But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;46 the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.47 And that servant, who knew his lord’s will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes;48 but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask the more.49 I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what do I desire, if it is already kindled?50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!51 Think ye that I am come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:52 for there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.53 They shall be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother in law against her daughter in law, and daughter in law against her mother in law.54 And he said to the multitudes also, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it cometh to pass.55 And when ye see a south wind blowing, ye say, There will be a scorching heat; and it cometh to pass.56 Ye hypocrites, ye know how to interpret the face of the earth and the heaven; but how is it that ye know not how to interpret this time?57 And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?58 For as thou art going with thine adversary before the magistrate, on the way give diligence to be quit of him; lest haply he drag thee unto the judge, and the judge shall deliver thee to the officer, and the officer shall cast thee into prison.59 I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the very last mite.
