Lucas 12

Advertencia contra la hipocresía

1  Mientras tanto, las multitudes crecieron hasta que miles de personas se arremolinaban y se atropellaban unas a otras. Jesús primero se dirigió a sus discípulos y les advirtió: «Tengan cuidado con la levadura de los fariseos, es decir, su hipocresía. 2 Llegará el tiempo en que todo lo que está encubierto será revelado y todo lo secreto se dará a conocer a todos. 3 Todo lo que hayan dicho en la oscuridad se oirá a plena luz, y todo lo que hayan susurrado a puerta cerrada, ¡se gritará desde los techos para que todo el mundo lo oiga!

4 »Queridos amigos, no teman a los que quieren matarles el cuerpo, después de eso, no pueden hacerles nada más. 5 Les diré a quién temer: teman a Dios, quien tiene el poder de quitarles la vida y luego arrojarlos al infierno.t Claro, él es a quien deben temer.

6 »¿Cuánto cuestan cinco gorriones: dos monedas de cobre?t Sin embargo, Dios no se olvida de ninguno de ellos. 7 Y, en cuanto a ustedes, cada cabello de su cabeza está contado. Así que no tengan miedo; para Dios ustedes son más valiosos que toda una bandada de gorriones.

8 »Les digo la verdad, a todo el que me reconozca en público aquí en la tierra, el Hijo del Hombret también lo reconocerá en presencia de los ángeles de Dios. 9 Pero el que me niegue aquí en la tierra será negado delante de los ángeles de Dios. 10 El que hable en contra del Hijo del Hombre puede ser perdonado, pero el que blasfeme contra el Espíritu Santo no será perdonado.

11 »Cuando sean sometidos a juicio en las sinagogas y delante de gobernantes y autoridades, no se preocupen por cómo defenderse o qué decir, 12 porque el Espíritu Santo les enseñará en ese momento lo que hay que decir».

Parábola del rico insensato

13 Entonces alguien de la multitud exclamó:
—Maestro, por favor, dile a mi hermano que divida la herencia de nuestro padre conmigo.

14 Jesús le respondió:
—Amigo, ¿quién me puso por juez sobre ustedes para decidir cosas como ésa?

15 Y luego dijo: «¡Tengan cuidado con toda clase de avaricia! La vida no se mide por cuánto tienen».

16 Luego les contó una historia: «Un hombre rico tenía un campo fértil que producía buenas cosechas. 17 Se dijo a sí mismo: “¿Qué debo hacer? No tengo lugar para almacenar todas mis cosechas”. 18 Entonces pensó: “Ya sé. Tiraré abajo mis graneros y construiré unos más grandes. Así tendré lugar suficiente para almacenar todo mi trigo y mis otros bienes. 19 Luego me pondré cómodo y me diré a mí mismo: ‘Amigo mío, tienes almacenado para muchos años. ¡Relájate! ¡Come y bebe y diviértete!’”.

20 »Pero Dios le dijo: “¡Necio! Vas a morir esta misma noche. ¿Y quién se quedará con todo aquello por lo que has trabajado?”.

21 »Así es, el que almacena riquezas terrenales pero no es rico en su relación con Dios, es un necio».

Enseñanza acerca del dinero y las posesiones

22 Luego, dirigiéndose a sus discípulos, dijo: «Por eso les digo que no se preocupen por la vida diaria, si tendrán suficiente alimento para comer o suficiente ropa para vestirse. 23 Pues la vida es más que la comida, y el cuerpo es más que la ropa. 24 Miren los cuervos. No plantan ni cosechan ni guardan comida en graneros, porque Dios los alimenta. ¡Y ustedes son para él mucho más valiosos que cualquier pájaro! 25 ¿Acaso con todas sus preocupaciones pueden añadir un solo momento a su vida? 26 Y, si por mucho preocuparse no se logra algo tan pequeño como eso, ¿de qué sirve preocuparse por cosas más grandes?

27 »Miren cómo crecen los lirios. No trabajan ni cosen su ropa; sin embargo, ni Salomón con toda su gloria se vistió tan hermoso como ellos. 28 Y, si Dios cuida de manera tan maravillosa a las flores que hoy están y mañana se echan al fuego, tengan por seguro que cuidará de ustedes. ¿Por qué tienen tan poca fe?

29 »No se inquieten por lo que van a comer o lo que van a beber. No se preocupen por esas cosas. 30 Esas cosas dominan el pensamiento de los incrédulos en todo el mundo, pero su Padre ya conoce sus necesidades. 31 Busquen el reino de Dios por encima de todo lo demás, y él les dará todo lo que necesiten.

32 »Así que no se preocupe, pequeño rebaño. Pues al Padre le da mucha felicidad entregarles el reino.

33 »Vendan sus posesiones y den a los que pasan necesidad. ¡Eso almacenará tesoros para ustedes en el cielo! Y las bolsas celestiales nunca se ponen viejas ni se agujerean. El tesoro de ustedes estará seguro; ningún ladrón podrá robarlo y ninguna polilla, destruirlo. 34 Donde esté su tesoro, allí estarán también los deseos de su corazón.

Preparados para la venida del Señor

35 »Estén vestidos, listos para servir y mantengan las lámparas encendidas, 36 como si esperaran el regreso de su amo de la fiesta de bodas. Entonces estarán listos para abrirle la puerta y dejarlo entrar en el momento que llegue y llame. 37 Los siervos que estén listos y a la espera de su regreso serán recompensados. Les digo la verdad, él mismo les indicará dónde sentarse, se pondrá el delantal y les servirá mientras están a la mesa y comen. 38 Puede ser que llegue en la mitad de la noche o durante la madrugada,t pero cualquiera que sea la hora que llegue, recompensará a los siervos que estén preparados.

39 »Entiendan lo siguiente: si el dueño de una casa supiera exactamente a qué hora viene un ladrón, no dejaría que asaltara su casa. 40 Ustedes también deben estar preparados todo el tiempo, porque el Hijo del Hombre vendrá cuando menos lo esperen.

41 Pedro preguntó:
—Señor, ¿esa ilustración es sólo para nosotros o es para todos?

42 Y el Señor respondió:
—Un siervo fiel y sensato es aquel a quien el amo puede darle la responsabilidad de dirigir a los demás siervos y alimentarlos. 43 Si el amo regresa y encuentra que el siervo ha hecho un buen trabajo, habrá una recompensa. 44 Les digo la verdad, el amo pondrá a ese siervo a cargo de todo lo que posee. 45 ¿Pero qué tal si el siervo piensa: “Mi amo no regresará por un tiempo” y comienza a golpear a los otros siervos, a parrandear y a emborracharse? 46 El amo regresará inesperadamente y sin previo aviso, cortará al siervo en pedazos y lo expulsará junto con los infieles.

47 »Un siervo que sabe lo que su amo quiere, pero no se prepara ni cumple las instrucciones, será severamente castigado. 48 Pero alguien que no lo sabe y hace algo malo, será castigado levemente. Alguien a quien se le ha dado mucho, mucho se le pedirá a cambio; y alguien a quien se le ha confiado mucho, aún más se le exigirá.

Jesús causa división

49 »Yo he venido para encender con fuego el mundo, ¡y quisiera que ya estuviera en llamas! 50 Me espera un terrible bautismo de sufrimiento, y estoy bajo una carga pesada hasta que se lleve a cabo. 51 ¿Piensan que vine a traer paz a la tierra? No, ¡vine a causar división entre las personas! 52 De ahora en adelante, las familias estarán divididas, tres a mi favor y dos en mi contra, o dos a favor y tres en contra.

53 “Habrá divisiones, el padre estará contra el hijo
y el hijo contra el padre;
la madre contra la hija
y la hija contra la madre;
la suegra contra la nuera,
y la nuera contra la suegra”t.

54 Entonces Jesús se dirigió a la multitud y dijo: «Cuando ustedes ven que se forman nubes en el occidente, dicen: “Viene la lluvia”. Y tienen razón. 55 Cuando sopla viento del sur, dicen: “Hoy será un día de mucho calor”. Y así sucede. 56 ¡Necios! Saben interpretar las señales del clima en la tierra y en los cielos, pero no saben interpretar los tiempos presentes.

57 »¿Por qué no pueden decidir por ustedes mismos lo que es correcto? 58 Cuando vayan camino al juicio con el que los acusa, traten de resolver el asunto antes de llegar. De no ser así, su acusador podría arrastrarlos ante el juez, quien los entregará a un oficial, que los meterá en la cárcel. 59 Y, si eso sucede, no los pondrán en libertad hasta que hayan pagado el último centavot».

LUKE 12

Warnings

1  t As thousands of people crowded around Jesus and were stepping on each other, he told his disciples:
Be sure to guard against the dishonest teachingt of the Pharisees! It is their way of fooling people. 2 t Everything that is hidden will be found out, and every secret will be known.

3 Whatever you say in the dark will be heard when it is day. Whatever you whisper in a closed room will be shouted from the housetops.

The One To Fear

(Matthew 10.28-31)

5 God is the one you must fear. Not only can he take your life, but he can throw you into hell. God is certainly the one you should fear!
6 Five sparrows are sold for only a few cents, but God doesn't forget a single one of them.

7 Even the hairs on your head are counted. So don't be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows.

Telling Others about Christ

(Matthew 10.32,33; 12.32; 10.19,20)

10 t If you speak against the Son of Man, you can be forgiven, but if you speak against the Holy Spirit, you cannot be forgiven.
11  t When you are brought to trial in the synagogues or before rulers or officials, don't worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say.

12 At that time the Holy Spirit will tell you what to say.

A Rich Fool

13 A man in a crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to give me my share of what our father left us when he died.”

14 Jesus answered, “Who gave me the right to settle arguments between you and your brother?”

15 Then he said to the crowd, “Don't be greedy! Owning a lot of things won't make your life safe.”

16 So Jesus told them this story:
A rich man's farm produced a big crop,

17 and he said to himself, “What can I do? I don't have a place large enough to store everything.”
18 Later, he said, “Now I know what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones, where I can store all my grain and other goods.

19 t Then I'll say to myself, ‘You have stored up enough good things to last for years to come. Live it up! Eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.’ ”

20 But God said to him, “You fool! Tonight you will die. Then who will get what you have stored up?”

21 “This is what happens to people who store up everything for themselves, but are poor in the sight of God.”

Worry

(Matthew 6.25-34)

22 Jesus said to his disciples:
I tell you not to worry about your life! Don't worry about having something to eat or wear. 23 Life is more than food or clothing. 24 Look at the crows! They don't plant or harvest, and they don't have storehouses or barns. But God takes care of them. You are much more important than any birds. 25 Can worry make you live longer?t

26 If you don't have power over small things, why worry about everything else?
27  t Look how the wild flowers grow! They don't work hard to make their clothes. But I tell you Solomon with all his wealtht wasn't as well clothed as one of these flowers.

28 God gives such beauty to everything that grows in the fields, even though it is here today and thrown into a fire tomorrow. Won't he do even more for you? You have such little faith!
29 Don't keep worrying about having something to eat or drink. 30 Only people who don't know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father knows what you need.

31 But put God's work first, and these things will be yours as well.

Treasures in Heaven

(Matthew 6.19-21)

34 Your heart will always be where your treasure is.

Faithful and Unfaithful Servants

(Matthew 24.45-51)

40 So always be ready! You don't know when the Son of Man will come.

41 Peter asked Jesus, “Did you say this just for us or for everyone?”

42 The Lord answered:
Who are faithful and wise servants? Who are the ones the master will put in charge of giving the other servants their food supplies at the proper time? 43 Servants are fortunate if their master comes and finds them doing their job.

44 A servant who is always faithful will surely be put in charge of everything the master owns.
45 But suppose one of the servants thinks that the master won't return until late. Suppose that servant starts beating all the other servants and eats and drinks and gets drunk.

46 If that happens, the master will come on a day and at a time when the servant least expects him. That servant will then be punished and thrown out with the servants who cannot be trusted.
47 If servants are not ready or willing to do what their master wants them to do, they will be beaten hard.

48 But servants who don't know what their master wants them to do will not be beaten so hard for doing wrong. If God has been generous with you, he will expect you to serve him well. But if he has been more than generous, he will expect you to serve him even better.

Not Peace, but Trouble

(Matthew 10.34-36)

53 t Fathers and sons will turn against one another, and mothers and daughters will do the same. Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law will also turn against each other.

Knowing What To Do

(Matthew 16.2,3; 5.25,26)

54 Jesus said to all the people:
As soon as you see a cloud coming up in the west, you say, “It's going to rain,” and it does. 55 When the south wind blows, you say, “It's going to get hot,” and it does. 56 Are you trying to fool someone? You can predict the weather by looking at the earth and sky, but you don't really know what's going on right now. 57 Why don't you understand the right thing to do? 58 When someone accuses you of something, try to settle things before you are taken to court. If you don't, you will be dragged before the judge. Then the judge will hand you over to the jailer, and you will be locked up. 59 You won't get out until you have paid the last cent you owe.
