Lukas 14

1 Toe die sabbatdag aanbreek, het Jesus by een van die leiers van die Fariseërs gaan eet. Oudergewoonte het hulle Hom fyn dopgehou, want teen daardie tyd het hulle baie goed geweet dat Jesus Hom nie veel aan hulle reëls en wette steur nie.
2 Intussen het Jesus gesien dat daar 'n man onder hulle was met 'n liggaamlike afskeiding wat hom onrein maak.3 Toe draai Hy na die ander godsdienstige leiers toe wat ook daar was vir die ete en vra hulle: "Sê My, mag 'n mens iemand wat siek is op die sabbat gesond maak, of nie? Wat sê julle?"4 Maar niemand het 'n woord gesê nie. Hulle het net doodstil bly sit. Toe stap Jesus na die siek man toe, maak hom gesond en stuur hom terug na sy huis toe.
5 Jesus vra toe vir die godsdienstige leiers: "Wat sal julle doen as een van julle kinders of een van julle diere op die sabbatdag in 'n diep sloot vol water val? Sal julle hulle nie dadelik uithaal nie?"
6 Die godsdienstige leiers was nou in 'n hoek. Hulle het geweet as hulle ja sê, sou Jesus vir hulle sê dat dit presies was wat Hy nou vir die siek man gedoen het. Daarom het hulle stilgebly.
7  'n Rukkie later, toe die gasheer vir die gaste sê om te kom aansit vir ete, merk Jesus op hoe almal skarrel om die beste plekke aan tafel te kry.8 Toe sê Hy vir hulle: "Moenie altyd hardloop vir die beste plek as jy na 'n belangrike geleentheid toe uitgenooi word nie. Netnou gaan sit jy dalk op 'n plek wat vir 'n eregas bespreek is.9 Dink net hoe skaam jy dan sal kry as die gasheer daar voor almal vir jou kom sê: 'Verskoon tog, maar hierdie plekke is eintlik vir die eregaste bedoel. Soek vir jou 'n ander plek.' Dan moet jy met 'n rooi gesig opstaan en op die slegste plek gaan sit.
10 "Gaan sit liewer daar agter tussen die ander mense as jy na 'n belangrike funksie toe genooi word. Kies doelbewus die swakste plek uit. Wie weet, dalk kom die gasheer na jou toe en sê: 'Ag nee, vir wat sit jy hier agter? Daar voor is 'n baie beter plek. Kom sit daar by my.' Dan sal almal wat saam met jou aan tafel sit, sê: 'Sjoe, dat so 'n belangrike persoon so nederig is om hier tussen ons te sit!'11 Onthou: nederige mense word op die ou end met eer bekroon en belangrike mense word verneder."
12  Toe draai Jesus na die gasheer toe en sê vir hom: "As jy weer 'n groot ete of 'n fees hou, moet dan nie hierdie spul weer uitnooi nie. Haal al jou vriende en al jou familielede en die vernames se name van jou gastelys af. Moet ook nie daardie ryk bure van jou uitnooi nie. Dan is hulle almal weer onder die verpligting om jou vir 'n ete terug uit te nooi. En so gaan dit dan heeltyd aan.13 Nee, as jy weer 'n slag 'n partytjie hou, moet die volgende mense op jou uitnodigingslys wees: almal wat arm is en niks het om te eet nie, en almal wat siek is en swaarkry, veral diegene wat hulle ledemate verloor het of wat kreupel en blind is.
14 "As jy sulke mense uitnooi, is jy 'n baie gelukkige mens. Hulle het niks om vir jou mee dankie te sê nie. Maar dit maak nie saak nie, want God sien raak wat jy doen. En Hy onthou dit. Op die laaste dag wanneer al sy kinders daar voor Hom bymekaar is, wag daar 'n groot geskenk vir jou van God self."
15  Een van die gaste wat saam met Jesus aan tafel was, sê toe: "Sjoe, wat 'n voorreg moet dit nie wees om eendag daar in God se nuwe wêreld 'n plek te kan kry nie!"16 Jesus draai na hom toe en sê vir hom: "Weet jy, eendag het 'n ryk man 'n groot feesmaal gehou en baie mense uitgenooi. Omdat daar baie voorbereidings was, het hy met die gaste afgespreek dat hy hulle sou laat roep sodra alles gereed was. So gesê, so gedaan.17 Later, toe die kos reg was, stuur die man een van sy helpers om al die genooides te laat weet: 'Julle kan nou maar kom, die tafels staan gelaai met die heerlikste kos. Laat die fees begin.'
18 "Maar toe gebeur daar 'n snaakse ding. Al die genooides het skielik kop uitgetrek. Die een het gesê: 'U moet my asseblief verskoon. Ek het so pas 'n stuk grond gekoop. Nou moet ek gou gaan kyk hoe dit lyk.'
19 "'n Ander een het gesê: 'Ek het 'n klompie osse gekoop en moet gou gaan kyk hoe dit met hulle gaan.'
20 "Nog 'n ander een het gesê: 'Ek het pas getrou. Daarom kan ek nie vandag by u ete wees nie.'
21 "Die helper het toe teruggekom en vir sy werkgewer vertel dat niemand meer kon kom nie. Die man was woedend daaroor. Nadat hy so 'n rukkie gestaan en dink het, sê hy toe vir sy helper: 'Kom ons maak 'n ander plan. Alles staan mos gereed. So, waarom sal ons dan nie feesvier nie? Gaan nooi gou almal wat jy in die hande kan kry. Maak nie saak wie hulle is of waar hulle bly nie, gaan nooi hulle uit. Gaan haal die armes en al die siekes wat daar in die agterstrate tussen die asblikke slaap. Sê vir hulle hulle moet dadelik na my feesmaal toe kom.'
22 "Die helper is toe daar weg. Na 'n ruk kom hy met 'n groot klomp mense terug. Hy het vir sy werkgewer gaan sê: 'Meneer, ek het gedoen wat u vir my gesê het om te doen. Hier is nou baie mense vir u feesmaal. Maar weet u, daar's nog plek oor.'
23-24 "'Nou ja, dan moet jy nog mense gaan soek,' sê die huisheer. 'Gaan keer almal voor wat met die hoofpad hier naby verbyry. Ja, en gaan ook daar na die winkelsentrum toe. Keer almal voor wat jy raakloop en smeek hulle om na my fees toe te kom. Moenie nee vir 'n antwoord vat nie. Hou aan totdat hulle ja sê. Sleep hulle saam met jou hierheen terug as dit moet. My huis moet vol word. Maar daardie ander spul wat genooi is, sal nie hulle monde aan my kos sit nie.'"
25  Jesus was teen daardie tyd so bekend dat 'n groot skare agter Hom aangestap het.26 Op 'n dag het Hy vir hulle almal gesê: "Dink julle regtig dat dit so maklik is om een van my volgelinge te wees? Wel, kom Ek sê reguit vir julle, as jy meer omgee vir jou ouers of vir jou vrou of jou kinders of vir enigiemand anders, moet jy nie eens probeer om agter My aan te kom nie.27 As jy My wil volg, moet jy alles wat vir jou baie belangrik is, laat staan. Stel dit tweede. So nie, bly dan weg!
"Ek moet die belangrikste van alles in jou lewe wees. En dit is baie moeilik. Ja, dis so moeilik soos om jou eie doodsvonnis te onderteken. Om My te volg moet jy maak soos iemand wat die doodsvonnis opgelê is: jy moet jou kruis optel en agter My aanstap. As jy nie daarvoor kans sien nie, bly liewer weg.
28 "Kom Ek verduidelik dit met 'n voorbeeld: As jy 'n huis wil bou, werk jy mos voor die tyd uit of jy genoeg geld het om dit alles te kan doen, nie waar nie?29 Anders, as jy nie jou sommetjies behoorlik gemaak het nie, is jou geld dalk te min nadat jy die fondament gegooi het. En wat gebeur dan? Dan lag almal vir jou.30 Hulle sal sê: 'Daar's nou vir jou 'n deurmekaar ou wat 'n huis halfpad bou en dit dan net so laat staan!'
31 "Nog 'n voorbeeld: As 'n koning met 'n leër van 10 000 soldate besluit om te gaan oorlog maak teen 'n ander koning met 'n leër van 20 000 soldate, moet hy voor die tyd baie mooi dink of hy dit kan regkry.32 So nie, moet hy liewer 'n afvaardiging na die ander koning toe stuur en met hom probeer onderhandel om 'n vreedsame oplossing te kry.
33 "Weet julle, so gaan dit ook met elkeen van julle wat agter My wil aankom. As julle nie bereid is om julle geld en julle besittings weg te gee aan ander mense wat swaarkry nie, kan julle nie my volgelinge wees nie.
34 "Julle wat sê dat julle my volgelinge is, is soos sout. Julle moet smaak gee aan hierdie smaaklose wêreld. Maar wat help dit as julle self smaakloos is?35 Dan beteken julle niks meer vir My nie. Dan moet julle weggegooi word, presies net soos 'n mens maak met sout wat sy smaak verloor het. Julle moet mooi luister na wat Ek vir julle sê, en dit ook gaan doen."

Luke 14

Healing Again on the Sabbath

1 Nowt one Sabbath when Jesus went to dinet at the house of a leadert of the Pharisees,s they were watchings him closely.2 Theret rightt in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy.s3 Sot Jesus askedt the experts in religious lawt and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbaths or not?”4 But they remained silent. Sot Jesust took hold of the man,t healed him, and sent him away.t5 Thent he said to them, “Which of you, if you have a sons or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?”

6 Butt they could not replys to this.

On Seeking Seats of Honor

7 Thent when Jesust noticed how the guestst chose the places of honor,t he told them a parable. He said to them,8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast,t do not taket the place of honor, because a person more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host.t9 Sot the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this man your place.’ Then, ashamed,t you will begin to move to the least importantt place.10 But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your hostt approaches he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up here to a better place.’t Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you.

11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, butt the one who humbless himself will be exalted.”
12 Het said also to the mans who had invited him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet,t don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid.13 But when you host an elaborate meal,t invite the poor, the crippled,s the lame, andt the blind.s

14 Thent you will be blessed,s because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaids at the resurrection of the righteous.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

15 Whent one of those at the meal with Jesust heard this, he said to him, “Blessed is everyonet who will feastt in the kingdom of God!”s16 But Jesust said to him, “A man once gave a great banquett and inviteds many guests.t17 Att the time for the banquett he sent his slavet to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’18 But one after another they allt began to make excuses.s The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field,s and I must go out and see it. Please excuse me.’s19 Anothert said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen,s and I am going outt to examine them. Please excuse me.’20 Anothert said, ‘I just got married, and I cannot come.’s21 Sot the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the master of the household was furioust and said to his slave, ‘Go out quicklys to the streets and alleys of the city,t and bring in the poor,s the crippled,t the blind, and the lame.’22 Thent the slave said, ‘Sir, what you instructed has been done, and there is still room.’s23 Sot the master said to hist slave, ‘Go out to the highwayss and country roadst and urget peoplet to come in, so that my house will be filled.s

24 For I tell you, not one of those individualst who were inviteds will taste my banquet!’”t

Counting the Cost

25 Now large crowdss were accompanying Jesus,t and turning to them he said,26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hatet his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life,t he cannot be my disciple.27 Whoever does not carry his own crosss and followt me cannot be my disciple.28 For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t sit downt first and compute the costt to see if he has enough money to complete it?29 Otherwise,t when he has laidt a foundation and is not able to finish the tower,t all who see itt will begin to make fun oft him.30 They will say,t ‘This mans began to build and was not able to finish!’s31 Or what king, going out to confront another king in battle, will not sit downt first and determine whether he is able with ten thousand to opposet the one coming against him with twenty thousand?32 If he cannot succeed,t he will send a representativet while the other is still a long way off and ask for terms of peace.s

33 In the same way therefore not one of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his own possessions.ts
34 “Saltts is good, but if salt loses its flavor,s how can its flavor be restored?

35 It is of no valuet for the soil or for the manure pile; it is to be thrown out.t The one who has ears to hear had better listen!”t
