LUKAS 14
Jesus genees 'n man wat aan water gely het
1 Op 'n sabbatdag toe Jesus na die huis van 'n vooraanstaande Fariseër toe gegaan het om daar te eet, het hulle Hom fyn dopgehou. 2 Reg voor Hom was daar 'n man wat aan water gely het. 3 Jesus praat toe met die wetgeleerdes en Fariseërs en vra: “Mag 'n mens iemand op die sabbatdag gesond maak of nie?”
4 Maar hulle het stilgebly. Toe trek Jesus die sieke nader, maak hom gesond en laat hom gaan. 5 Daarna sê Hy vir hulle: “Sê nou 'n seun of 'n bees van een van julle val in 'n put, sal hy hom nie dadelik uithaal nie, al is dit op 'n sabbatdag?”
6 Hulle kon daar niks op antwoord nie.
Gelykenis oor beskeidenheid en gasvryheid
7 Toe Jesus merk hoe hulle die voorste plekke aan tafel uitsoek, vertel Hy aan die genooides die volgende gelykenis: 8 “As iemand jou na 'n bruilof toe uitnooi, moet jy nie sommer op die voorste plek gaan sit nie. Dit kan net wees dat die gasheer iemand uitgenooi het wat belangriker is as jy. 9 Dan sal hy wat julle albei uitgenooi het, na jou toe kom en sê: ‘Gee bietjie die plek af vir hierdie man.’ Jy sal dan tot jou skande die agterste plek moet gaan inneem. 10 Maar as jy uitgenooi is, gaan sit liewer op die agterste plek. Wanneer die gasheer kom, sal hy vir jou kan sê: ‘Vriend, kom sit hier voor.’ Dan sal jy in die agting van al die gaste styg. 11 Elkeen wat hoogmoedig is, sal verneder word, en elkeen wat nederig is, sal verhoog word.”
12 Hy het ook vir die gasheer gesê: “As jy in die middag of in die aand 'n maaltyd gee, moet dan nie jou vriende of broers of familie of ryk bure uitnooi sodat hulle jou waarskynlik ook weer uitnooi en jou op dié manier vergoed nie. 13 Nee, as jy 'n feesmaal gee, nooi dan armes, kreupeles, verlamdes en blindes. 14 Jy kan jou gelukkig ag dat hulle niks het om jou mee te vergoed nie, want God sal jou vergoed by die opstanding van dié wat reg gedoen het.”
Die gelykenis van die groot maaltyd
(Matt. 22:1-10)
15 Een van dié wat saam aan tafel was, het dit gehoor en vir Hom gesê: “Gelukkig is die man wat aan die maaltyd in die koninkryk van God kan deelneem.”
16 Toe sê Jesus vir hom: “Daar was 'n man wat 'n groot maaltyd gegee en baie mense uitgenooi het. 17 Toe die maaltyd gereed was, stuur hy sy slaaf om vir die genooides te sê: ‘Kom, die maaltyd staan klaar.’ 18 Maar hulle begin almal, die een na die ander, verskoning maak. Die eerste sê vir hom: ‘Ek het 'n stuk grond gekoop en dit is noodsaaklik dat ek uitgaan om daarna te kyk. Ek vra u, verskoon my asseblief.’ 19 'n Ander een sê: ‘Ek het vyf paar osse gekoop en gaan hulle probeer. Ek vra u, verskoon my asseblief.’ 20 Nog 'n ander een sê: ‘Ek is pas getroud, daarom kan ek nie kom nie.’
21 “Die slaaf kom toe terug en vertel dit alles aan sy eienaar. Toe word die man kwaad en sê vir sy slaaf: ‘Gaan uit na die strate en gangetjies van die stad en bring die armes en kreupeles en blindes en verlamdes hierheen.’ 22 Later kom die slaaf sê: ‘Meneer, u opdrag is uitgevoer, en daar is nog plek.’ 23 Toe sê die man vir die slaaf: ‘Gaan uit na die paaie en lanings en dring by hulle daarop aan om in te kom, sodat my huis vol kan word. 24 Dit verseker ek julle: Nie een van die mense wat genooi is, sal sy mond aan my kos sit nie.’ ”
Die eise van dissipelskap
(Matt. 10:37-38; vgl. Mark. 10:29-30)
25 'n Groot menigte het saam met Jesus gereis. Hy draai toe om en sê vir hulle: 26 “As iemand na My toe kom, kan hy nie my dissipel wees nie tensy hy afstand doen van sy eie vader en moeder en vrou en kinders en broers en susters, ja, selfs van sy eie lewe. 27 Iemand wat nie sy eie kruis dra en agter My aan kom nie, kan nie my dissipel wees nie.
28 “Wie van julle wat 'n gebou wil oprig, gaan nie eers sit en die koste bereken, om te sien of hy genoeg geld het om die werk te voltooi nie? 29 Anders, as hy die fondament gelê het en nie in staat is om die gebou te voltooi nie, sal almal wat dit sien, met hom die spot begin dryf. 30 Hulle sal sê: ‘Hier is 'n man wat begin bou het maar nie kon klaar maak nie.’
31 “Of watter koning wat met 'n ander koning in 'n oorlog betrokke raak, sal nie eers gaan sit en oorweeg of hy met sy tien duisend man sterk genoeg is om die ander een teen te staan wat met twintig duisend teen hom optrek nie? 32 Anders stuur hy 'n afvaardiging om vredesvoorwaardes te vra terwyl die ander een nog ver is.
33 “So kan niemand van julle my dissipel wees as hy nie bereid is om van al sy besittings afstand te doen nie.”
Kragtelose sout
(Matt. 5:13; Mark. 9:50)
34 “Sout is 'n goeie ding. Maar as sout verslaan het, waarmee sal dit weer sout gemaak word? 35 Dit is nie eers bruikbaar vir die grond of vir die mishoop nie. Hulle gooi dit buitekant weg. Wie ore het om te hoor, moet luister!”
Luke 14
1 IT OCCURRED one Sabbath, when [Jesus] went for a meal at the house of one of the ruling Pharisees, that they were [engaged in] watching Him [closely].2 And behold, [just] in front of Him there was a man who had dropsy.3 And Jesus asked the lawyers and the Pharisees, Is it lawful and right to cure on the Sabbath or not?4 But they kept silent. Then He took hold [of the man] and cured him and sent him away.5 And He said to them, Which of you, having a son or a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not at once pull him out on the Sabbath day?6 And they were unable to reply to this.7 Now He told a parable to those who were invited, [when] He noticed how they were selecting the places of honor, saying to them,8 When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, do not recline on the chief seat [in the place of honor], lest a more distinguished person than you has been invited by him, 9 And he who invited both of you will come to you and say, Let this man have the place [you have taken]. Then, with humiliation and a guilty sense of impropriety, you will begin to take the lowest place.10 But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher! Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit [at table] with you.11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled (ranked below others who are honored or rewarded), and he who humbles himself (keeps a modest opinion of himself and behaves accordingly) will be exalted (elevated in rank).12 Jesus also said to the man who had invited Him, When you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, lest perhaps they also invite you in return, and so you are paid back.13 But when you give a banquet or a reception, invite the poor, the disabled, the lame, and the blind.14 Then you will be blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied), because they have no way of repaying you, and you will be recompensed at the resurrection of the just (upright).15 When one of those who reclined [at the table] with Him heard this, he said to Him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!16 But Jesus said to him, A man was once giving a great supper and invited many;17 And at the hour for the supper he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, Come, for all is now ready.18 But they all alike began to make excuses and to beg off. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of land, and I have to go out and see it; I beg you, have me excused.19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine and put my approval on them; I beg you, have me excused.20 And another said, I have married a wife, and because of this I am unable to come. 21 So the servant came and reported these [answers] to his master. Then the master of the house said in wrath to his servant, Go quickly into the great streets and the small streets of the city and bring in here the poor and the disabled and the blind and the lame.22 And the servant [returning] said, Sir, what you have commanded me to do has been done, and yet there is room.23 Then the master said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges and urge and constrain [them] to yield and come in, so that my house may be filled.24 For I tell you, not one of those who were invited shall taste my supper.25 Now huge crowds were going along with [Jesus], and He turned and said to them,26 If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters--[yes] and even his own life also--he cannot be My disciple.27 Whoever does not persevere and carry his own cross and come after (follow) Me cannot be My disciple.28 For which of you, wishing to build a farm building, does not first sit down and calculate the cost [to see] whether he has sufficient means to finish it?29 Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and is unable to complete [the building], all who see it will begin to mock and jeer at him,30 Saying, This man began to build and was not able (worth enough) to finish.31 Or what king, going out to engage in conflict with another king, will not first sit down and consider and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand [men] to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?32 And if he cannot [do so], when the other king is still a great way off, he sends an envoy and asks the terms of peace.33 So then, any of you who does not forsake (renounce, surrender claim to, give up, say good-bye to) all that he has cannot be My disciple.34 Salt is good [an excellent thing], but if salt has lost its strength and has become saltless (insipid, flat), how shall its saltness be restored?35 It is fit neither for the land nor for the manure heap; men throw it away. He who has ears to hear, let him listen and consider and comprehend by hearing!
