Lucas 14

Jesús sana en el día de descanso

1  Cierto día de descanso, Jesús fue a cenar en la casa de un líder de los fariseos, y la gente lo observaba de cerca. 2 Había allí un hombre que tenía hinchados los brazos y las piernas.t 3 Jesús preguntó a los fariseos y a los expertos de la ley religiosa: «¿Permite o no la ley sanar a la gente el día de descanso?». 4 Como ellos se negaron a contestar, Jesús tocó al hombre enfermo, lo sanó y lo despidió. 5 Después se dirigió a ellos y dijo: «¿Quién de ustedes no trabaja el día de descanso? Si tu hijot o tu buey cae en un pozo, ¿acaso no corres para sacarlo?». 6 Una vez más, ellos no pudieron responder.

Jesús enseña acerca de la humildad

7 Cuando Jesús vio que todos los invitados a la cena trataban de sentarse en los lugares de honor, cerca de la cabecera de la mesa, les dio el siguiente consejo: 8 «Cuando te inviten a una fiesta de bodas, no te sientes en el lugar de honor. ¿Qué pasaría si invitaron a alguien más distinguido que tú? 9 El anfitrión vendría y te diría: “Cédele tu asiento a esta persona”. Te sentirías avergonzado, ¡y tendrías que sentarte en cualquier otro lugar que haya quedado libre al final de la mesa!

10 »Más bien, ocupa el lugar más humilde, al final de la mesa. Entonces, cuando el anfitrión te vea, vendrá y te dirá: “¡Amigo, tenemos un lugar mejor para ti!”. Entonces serás honrado delante de todos los demás invitados. 11 Pues aquellos que se exaltan a sí mismos serán humillados, y los que se humillan a sí mismos serán exaltados».

12 Luego Jesús se dirigió al anfitrión: «Cuando ofrezcas un almuerzo o des un banquete —le dijo—, no invites a tus amigos, hermanos, parientes y vecinos ricos. Pues ellos también te invitarán a ti, y ésa será tu única recompensa. 13 Al contrario, invita al pobre, al lisiado, al cojo y al ciego. 14 Luego, en la resurrección de los justos, Dios te recompensará por invitar a los que no podían devolverte el favor».

Parábola de la gran fiesta

15 Al oír esto, un hombre que estaba sentado a la mesa con Jesús exclamó: «¡Qué bendición será participar de un banquetet en el reino de Dios!».

16 Jesús respondió con la siguiente historia: «Un hombre preparó una gran fiesta y envió muchas invitaciones. 17 Cuando el banquete estuvo listo, envió a su sirviente a decirles a los invitados: “Vengan, el banquete está preparado”; 18 pero todos comenzaron a poner excusas. Uno dijo: “Acabo de comprar un campo y debo ir a inspeccionarlo. Por favor, discúlpame”. 19 Otro dijo: “Acabo de comprar cinco yuntas de bueyes y quiero ir a probarlas. Por favor, discúlpame”. 20 Otro dijo: “Acabo de casarme, así que no puedo ir”.

21 »El sirviente regresó y le informó a su amo lo que le habían dicho. Su amo se puso furioso y le dijo: “Ve rápido a las calles y callejones de la ciudad e invita a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los ciegos y a los cojos”. 22 Después de hacerlo, el sirviente informó: “Todavía queda lugar para más personas”. 23 Entonces su amo dijo: “Ve por los senderos y detrás de los arbustos y a cualquiera que veas, insístele que venga para que la casa esté llena. 24 Pues ninguno de mis primeros invitados probará ni una migaja de mi banquete”».

El costo de ser discípulo

25 Una gran multitud seguía a Jesús. Él se dio vuelta y les dijo: 26 «Si quieres ser mi discípulo, debes aborrecer a los demás —a tu padre y madre, esposa e hijos, hermanos y hermanas— sí, hasta tu propia vida. De lo contrario, no puedes ser mi discípulo. 27 Además, si no cargas tu propia cruz y me sigues, no puedes ser mi discípulo.

28 »Sin embargo, no comiences sin calcular el costo. Pues, ¿quién comenzaría a construir un edificio sin primero calcular el costo para ver si hay suficiente dinero para terminarlo? 29 De no ser así, tal vez termines sólo los cimientos antes de quedarte sin dinero, y entonces todos se reirán de ti. 30 Dirán: “¡Ahí está el que comenzó un edificio y no pudo terminarlo!”.

31 »¿O qué rey entraría en guerra con otro rey sin primero sentarse con sus consejeros para evaluar si su ejército de diez mil puede vencer a los veinte mil soldados que marchan contra él? 32 Y, si no puede, enviará una delegación para negociar las condiciones de paz mientras el enemigo todavía esté lejos. 33 Así que no puedes convertirte en mi discípulo sin dejar todo lo que posees.

34 »La sal es buena para condimentar, pero si pierde su sabor, ¿cómo la harán salada de nuevo? 35 La sal sin sabor no sirve ni para la tierra ni para el abono. Se tira. ¡El que tenga oídos para oír debe escuchar y entender!».

LUKE 14

Jesus Heals a Sick Man

1 One Sabbath, Jesus was having dinner in the home of an important Pharisee, and everyone was carefully watching Jesus. 2 All of a sudden a man with swollen legs stood up in front of him. 3 Jesus turned and asked the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses, “Is it right to heal on the Sabbath?”

4 But they did not say a word.
Jesus took hold of the man. Then he healed him and sent him away. 5 t Afterwards, Jesus asked the people, “If your son or ox falls into a well, wouldn't you pull him out at once, even on the Sabbath?”

6 There was nothing they could say.

How To Be a Guest

7 Jesus saw how the guests had tried to take the best seats. So he told them:
8  t When you are invited to a wedding feast, don't sit in the best place. Someone more important may have been invited.

9 Then the one who invited you will come and say, “Give your place to this other guest!” You will be embarrassed and will have to sit in the worst place.
10 When you are invited to be a guest, go and sit in the worst place. Then the one who invited you may come and say, “My friend, take a better seat!” You will then be honored in front of all the other guests.

11 t If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.

12 Then Jesus said to the man who had invited him:
When you give a dinner or a banquet, don't invite your friends and family and relatives and rich neighbors. If you do, they will invite you in return, and you will be paid back. 13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the paralyzed, the lame, and the blind.

14 They cannot pay you back. But God will bless you and reward you when his people rise from death.

The Great Banquet

(Matthew 22.1-10)

15 After Jesus had finished speaking, one of the guests said, “The greatest blessing of all is to be at the banquet in God's kingdom!”

16 Jesus told him:
A man once gave a great banquet and invited a lot of guests.

17 When the banquet was ready, he sent a servant to tell the guests, “Everything is ready! Please come.”

18 One guest after another started making excuses. The first one said, “I bought some land, and I've got to look it over. Please excuse me.”

19 Another guest said, “I bought five teams of oxen, and I need to try them out. Please excuse me.”

20 Still another guest said, “I've just now married, and I can't be there.”

21 The servant told his master what happened, and the master became so angry he said, “Go as fast as you can to every street and alley in town! Bring in everyone who is poor or paralyzed or blind or lame.”

22 When the servant returned, he said, “Master, I've done what you told me, and there is still plenty of room for more people.”
23 His master then told him, “Go out along the back roads and make people come in, so my house will be full.

24 Not one of the guests I first invited will get even a bite of my food!”

Being a Disciple

(Matthew 10.37,38)

25 Large crowds were walking along with Jesus, when he turned and said:

26  t You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot follow me unless you love me more than you love your own life.

27  t You cannot be my disciple unless you carry your own cross and follow me.
28 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. What is the first thing you will do? Won't you sit down and figure out how much it will cost and if you have enough money to pay for it? 29 Otherwise, you will start building the tower, but not be able to finish. Then everyone who sees what is happening will laugh at you.

30 They will say, “You started building, but could not finish the job.”
31 What will a king do if he has only 10,000 soldiers to defend himself against a king who is about to attack him with 20,000 soldiers? Before he goes out to battle, won't he first sit down and decide if he can win? 32 If he thinks he won't be able to defend himself, he will send messengers and ask for peace while the other king is still a long way off.

33 So then, you cannot be my disciple unless you give away everything you own.
