Lucas 14

Jesús sana a un enfermo

1 En cierta ocasión, Jesús fue a comer a la casa de un fariseo muy importante. Era un día de reposo, y ellos estaban acechándolo.2 Delante de Jesús estaba un hombre enfermo de hidropesía,3 y Jesús les preguntó a los intérpretes de la ley y a los fariseos: «¿Está permitido sanar en el día de reposo?»4 Pero ellos no respondieron. Entonces Jesús tomó al hombre de la mano, lo sanó y lo despidió;5 luego se dirigió a ellos, y les dijo: «¿Quién de ustedes, si su asno o su buey se cae en un pozo, no lo saca enseguida, aunque sea en día de reposo?»t6 Y nadie podía responderle.

Los convidados a las bodas

7 Cuando Jesús vio que los invitados a la mesa escogían los mejores lugares, les contó una parábola:8 «Cuando te inviten a una boda, no vayas a sentarte en el mejor lugar, no sea que otro de los invitados sea más importante que tú,9 y cuando venga el anfitrión te diga: “Dale tu lugar a este otro”; porque entonces, con toda vergüenza, tendrás que ir a ocupar el último lugar.10 Así que, cuando seas invitado, ve más bien a sentarte en el último lugar, para que cuando venga el anfitrión te diga: “Amigo mío, ven y siéntate más adelante”. Así serás honrado delante de los otros invitados a la mesa.t11 Porque todo el que se enaltece, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será enaltecido.»t

12 También le dijo a su anfitrión: «Cuando ofrezcas una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes y vecinos ricos, no sea que ellos también te vuelvan a invitar, y quedes así compensado.13 Al contrario, cuando ofrezcas un banquete, invita a los pobres y a los mancos, a los cojos y a los ciegos,14 y así serás dichoso. Porque aunque ellos no te puedan devolver la invitación, tu recompensa la recibirás en la resurrección de los justos.»

Parábola de la gran cena

15 Uno de los que estaban sentados con él a la mesa oyó esto, y le dijo: «Dichoso el que participe del banquete en el reino de Dios.»16 Entonces Jesús le dijo: «Un hombre ofreció un gran banquete, e invitó a muchos.17 A la hora del banquete envió a su siervo a decir a los invitados: “Vengan, que la mesa ya está servida.”18 Pero todos ellos comenzaron a disculparse. El primero dijo: “Acabo de comprar un terreno, y tengo que ir a verlo. Por favor, discúlpame.”19 Otro dijo: “Acabo de comprar cinco yuntas de bueyes, y voy a probarlas. Por favor, discúlpame.”20 Y otro más dijo: “Acabo de casarme, así que no puedo asistir.”21 Cuando el siervo regresó, le comunicó todo esto a su señor. Entonces el dueño de la casa se enojó, y le dijo a su siervo: “Ve enseguida por las plazas y por las calles de la ciudad, y trae acá a los pobres, a los mancos, a los cojos y a los ciegos.”22 Cuando el siervo le dijo: “Señor, se ha hecho lo que mandaste hacer, y todavía hay lugar”,23 el señor dijo al siervo: “Ve entonces por los caminos y por los atajos, y hazlos entrar por la fuerza. ¡Quiero que se llene mi casa!24 Quiero decirles que ninguno de los que fueron invitados disfrutará de mi cena.”»

Lo que cuesta seguir a Cristo

25 Como grandes multitudes lo seguían, Jesús se volvió a ellos y les dijo:26 «Si alguno viene a mí, y no renuncia a su padre y a su madre, ni a su mujer y sus hijos, ni a sus hermanos y hermanas, y ni siquiera a su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo.t27 Y el que no toma su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo.t28 Porque ¿quién de ustedes que quiera levantar una torre, no se sienta primero a calcular los costos, para ver si tiene todo lo que necesita para terminarla?29 No sea que después de haber puesto los cimientos, se dé cuenta de que no puede terminarla, y todos los que lo sepan comiencen a burlarse de él30 y digan: “Este hombre comenzó a construir, y no pudo terminar.”31 ¿O qué rey que marche a la guerra contra otro rey, no se sienta primero a calcular si puede hacerle frente con diez mil soldados al que viene a atacarlo con veinte mil?32 Si no puede hacerle frente, envía una embajada al otro rey cuando éste todavía está lejos, y le propone condiciones de paz.33 Así también, cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncia a todo lo que tiene, no puede ser mi discípulo.

Cuando la sal pierde su sabor

34 »La sal es buena, pero si se vuelve insípida, ¿con qué puede recuperar su sabor?35 No sirve ni para la tierra ni para el montón de abono, y hay que tirarla. El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga.»

LUKE 14

Jesus Heals a Sick Man

1 One Sabbath, Jesus was having dinner in the home of an important Pharisee, and everyone was carefully watching Jesus. 2 All of a sudden a man with swollen legs stood up in front of him. 3 Jesus turned and asked the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of Moses, “Is it right to heal on the Sabbath?”

4 But they did not say a word.
Jesus took hold of the man. Then he healed him and sent him away. 5 t Afterwards, Jesus asked the people, “If your son or ox falls into a well, wouldn't you pull him out at once, even on the Sabbath?”

6 There was nothing they could say.

How To Be a Guest

7 Jesus saw how the guests had tried to take the best seats. So he told them:
8  t When you are invited to a wedding feast, don't sit in the best place. Someone more important may have been invited.

9 Then the one who invited you will come and say, “Give your place to this other guest!” You will be embarrassed and will have to sit in the worst place.
10 When you are invited to be a guest, go and sit in the worst place. Then the one who invited you may come and say, “My friend, take a better seat!” You will then be honored in front of all the other guests.

11 t If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.

12 Then Jesus said to the man who had invited him:
When you give a dinner or a banquet, don't invite your friends and family and relatives and rich neighbors. If you do, they will invite you in return, and you will be paid back. 13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the paralyzed, the lame, and the blind.

14 They cannot pay you back. But God will bless you and reward you when his people rise from death.

The Great Banquet

(Matthew 22.1-10)

15 After Jesus had finished speaking, one of the guests said, “The greatest blessing of all is to be at the banquet in God's kingdom!”

16 Jesus told him:
A man once gave a great banquet and invited a lot of guests.

17 When the banquet was ready, he sent a servant to tell the guests, “Everything is ready! Please come.”

18 One guest after another started making excuses. The first one said, “I bought some land, and I've got to look it over. Please excuse me.”

19 Another guest said, “I bought five teams of oxen, and I need to try them out. Please excuse me.”

20 Still another guest said, “I've just now married, and I can't be there.”

21 The servant told his master what happened, and the master became so angry he said, “Go as fast as you can to every street and alley in town! Bring in everyone who is poor or paralyzed or blind or lame.”

22 When the servant returned, he said, “Master, I've done what you told me, and there is still plenty of room for more people.”
23 His master then told him, “Go out along the back roads and make people come in, so my house will be full.

24 Not one of the guests I first invited will get even a bite of my food!”

Being a Disciple

(Matthew 10.37,38)

25 Large crowds were walking along with Jesus, when he turned and said:

26  t You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot follow me unless you love me more than you love your own life.

27  t You cannot be my disciple unless you carry your own cross and follow me.
28 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. What is the first thing you will do? Won't you sit down and figure out how much it will cost and if you have enough money to pay for it? 29 Otherwise, you will start building the tower, but not be able to finish. Then everyone who sees what is happening will laugh at you.

30 They will say, “You started building, but could not finish the job.”
31 What will a king do if he has only 10,000 soldiers to defend himself against a king who is about to attack him with 20,000 soldiers? Before he goes out to battle, won't he first sit down and decide if he can win? 32 If he thinks he won't be able to defend himself, he will send messengers and ask for peace while the other king is still a long way off.

33 So then, you cannot be my disciple unless you give away everything you own.
