Parabole de l'intendant infidèle

1 Jésus dit aussi à ses disciples: «Un homme riche avait un intendant. On vint lui rapporter qu'il gaspillait ses biens.2 Il l'appela et lui dit: 'Qu'est-ce que j'entends dire à ton sujet? Rends compte de ta gestion, car tu ne pourras plus gérer mes biens.'3 L'intendant se dit en lui-même: 'Que vais-je faire, puisque mon maître m'enlève la gestion de ses biens? Travailler la terre? Je n'en ai pas la force. Mendier? J'en ai honte.4 Je sais ce que je ferai pour qu'il y ait des gens qui m'accueillent chez eux quand je serai renvoyé de mon emploi.'5 Il fit venir chacun des débiteurs de son maître et dit au premier: 'Combien dois-tu à mon maître?'6 'Je dois 100 tonneaux d'huile d'olive', répondit-il. Il lui dit: 'Voici ton reçu, assieds-toi vite et écris 50.'7 Il dit ensuite à un autre: 'Et toi, combien dois-tu?' 'Je dois 100 mesures de blé', répondit-il. Et il lui dit: 'Voici ton reçu, écris 80.'

8 Le maître fit l'éloge de l'intendant malhonnête à cause de l'habileté dont il avait fait preuve. En effet, les enfants de ce monde sont plus habiles vis-à-vis de leur génération que ne le sont les enfants de la lumière.
9 »Et moi, je vous dis: Faites-vous des amis avec les richesses injustes, afin qu'ils vous accueillent dans les habitations éternelles lorsqu'elles viendront à vous manquer.10 Celui qui est fidèle dans les petites choses l'est aussi dans les grandes, et celui qui est malhonnête dans les petites choses l'est aussi dans les grandes.11 Si donc vous n'avez pas été fidèles dans les richesses injustes, qui vous confiera les biens véritables?12 Et si vous n'avez pas été fidèles dans ce qui est à autrui, qui vous donnera ce qui est à vous?

13 Aucun serviteur ne peut servir deux maîtres, car ou il détestera le premier et aimera le second, ou il s'attachera au premier et méprisera le second. Vous ne pouvez pas servir Dieu et l'argentt.»
14 En entendant tout cela, les pharisiens qui aimaient l'argent se moquaient de lui.15 Jésus leur dit: «Vous, vous cherchez à paraître justes devant les hommes, mais Dieu connaît votre cœur. De fait, ce qui est très estimé parmi les hommes est abominable devant Dieu.16 La loi et les prophètes ont subsisté jusqu'à Jean; depuis lors, la bonne nouvelle du royaume de Dieu est annoncée et chacun cherche avec force à y entrer.17 Le ciel et la terre disparaîtront plus facilement que ne tombera un seul trait de lettre de la loi.

18 Tout homme qui renvoie sa femme et en épouse une autre commet un adultère, et tout homme qui épouse une femme divorcée de son mari commet un adultère.

Histoire de l'homme riche et du pauvre Lazare

19 »Il y avait un homme riche, qui s'habillait de pourpre et de fin lin et qui chaque jour menait joyeuse et brillante vie.20 Un pauvre du nom de Lazare était couché devant son portail, couvert d'ulcères.21 Il aurait bien voulu se rassasier des miettes qui tombaient de la table du riche, cependant même les chiens venaient lécher ses ulcères.22 Le pauvre mourut et fut porté par les anges auprès d'Abraham. Le riche mourut aussi et fut enterré.23 Dans le séjour des morts, en proie à une grande souffrance il leva les yeux et vit de loin Abraham, avec Lazare à ses côtés.24 Il s'écria: 'Père Abraham, aie pitié de moi et envoie Lazare pour qu'il trempe le bout de son doigt dans l'eau afin de me rafraîchir la langue, car je souffre cruellement dans cette flamme.'25 Abraham répondit: 'Mon enfant, souviens-toi que tu as reçu tes biens pendant ta vie et que Lazare a connu les maux pendant la sienne; maintenant, il est consolé ici et toi, tu souffres.26 De plus, il y a un grand abîme entre nous et vous, afin que ceux qui voudraient passer d'ici vers vous, ou de chez vous vers nous, ne puissent pas le faire.'27 Le riche dit: 'Je te prie alors, père, d'envoyer Lazare chez mon père, car j'ai cinq frères.28 C'est pour qu'il les avertisse, afin qu'ils n'aboutissent pas, eux aussi, dans ce lieu de souffrances.'29 Abraham [lui] répondit: 'Ils ont Moïse et les prophètes, qu'ils les écoutent.'30 Le riche dit: 'Non, père Abraham, mais si quelqu'un vient de chez les morts vers eux, ils changeront d'attitude.'

31 Abraham lui dit alors: 'S'ils n'écoutent pas Moïse et les prophètes, ils ne se laisseront pas persuader, même si quelqu'un ressuscite.'»

Luke 16

1 And he said also unto the disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he was wasting his goods.2 And he called him, and said unto him, What is this that I hear of thee? render the account of thy stewardship; for thou canst be no longer steward.3 And the steward said within himself, What shall I do, seeing that my lord taketh away the stewardship from me? I have not strength to dig; to beg I am ashamed.4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.5 And calling to him each one of his lord’s debtors, he said to the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?6 And he said, A hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bond, and sit down quickly and write fifty.7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, A hundred measures of wheat. He saith unto him, Take thy bond, and write fourscore.8 And his lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely: for the sons of this world are for their own generation wiser than the sons of the light.9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends by means of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when it shall fail, they may receive you into the eternal tabernacles.10 He that is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much: and he that is unrighteous in a very little is unrighteous also in much.11 If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.14 And the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things; and they scoffed at him.15 And he said unto them, Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.16 The law and the prophets were until John: from that time the gospel of the kingdom of God is preached, and every man entereth violently into it.17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tittle of the law to fall.18 Every one that putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and he that marrieth one that is put away from a husband committeth adultery.19 Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:20 and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,21 and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table; yea, even the dogs come and licked his sores.22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.23 And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted and thou art in anguish.26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.27 And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house;28 for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.29 But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent.31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.
