Nascita di Gesù.
1 In quel periodo l’imperatore romano, Cesare Augusto, decretò che si facesse un censimento di tutta la nazione.2 Questo avvenne quando Quirino era governatore della Siria.3 Per il censimento era obbligatorio che tutti tornassero al paese dei propri antenati, per le debite registrazioni.4 Siccome Giuseppe era di stirpe reale, doveva andare in Giudea, a Betlemme, paese natale del re Davide. Era quindi necessario che si mettesse in viaggio da Nazaret di Galilea verso Betlemme.5 Giuseppe prese con sé Maria, sua moglie, che in quel periodo era in avanzato stato di gravidanza.6 Mentre si trovavano a Betlemme, fu tempo che il bambino nascesse,7 e Maria diede alla luce il suo primo figlio, un maschio. Ella lo avvolse in una coperta e lo depose nella mangiatoia di una stalla, perché non c’era posto per loro nella locanda del villaggio.8 Quella notte, nei campi fuori dal villaggio c’erano alcuni pastori che sorvegliavano le loro greggi.9 Improvvisamente un angelo apparve in mezzo a loro, e la gloria del Signore li avvolse di luce. I pastori erano molto spaventati,10 ma l’angelo li rassicurò.
« Non temete! » disse. « Io vi porto la più bella notizia che sia stata mai annunciata; questa notizia darà grande gioia a tutti!11 Il Salvatore, proprio il Messia, il Signore, è nato stanotte a Betlemme!12 Come potete riconoscerlo? Troverete un bambino avvolto in una coperta, che giace in una mangiatoia ».13 Subito al primo angelo se ne aggiunsero molti altri, gli eserciti del cielo, che lodavano Dio:14 « Gloria a Dio nel più alto dei cieli », cantavano, « e pace sulla terra a quelli che egli ama! »15 Quando gli angeli se ne furono tornati di nuovo in cielo, i pastori cominciarono a dirsi l’un l’altro: « Venite! Andiamo a Betlemme. Andiamo a vedere quello che è successo e che il Signore ci ha fatto sapere! »16 Corsero al villaggio, e là trovarono Maria e Giuseppe. E c’era il bambino che giaceva nella mangiatoia.17 I pastori divulgarono ovunque l’accaduto e ciò che l’angelo aveva detto del bambino;18 e tutti quelli che udivano la loro storia restavano meravigliati.19 Maria, intanto, serbava queste cose nel suo cuore, e spesso ci ripensava.20 I pastori, poi, ritornarono ai loro campi e alle loro greggi, lodando Dio per la visita degli angeli e perché avevano visto il bambino, proprio come l’angelo aveva annunciato.21 Otto giorni più tardi, durante la cerimonia della circoncisione, il bambino fu chiamato Gesù, il nome che gli aveva dato l’angelo, prima ancora che fosse concepito.22 Quando giunse il momento del sacrificio al tempio per la purificazione di Maria, come è prescritto dalla legge di Mosè dopo la nascita di un bimbo, i genitori portarono Gesù a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore,23 perché la legge di Dio dice: « Se il primo figlio di una donna è un maschio, deve essere consacrato al Signore ».24 In tale occasione i genitori di Gesù offrirono il sacrificio stabilito dalla legge, che poteva essere un paio di tortore o due piccioni.25 Quel giorno, c’era nel tempio un uomo di nome Simeone, residente a Gerusalemme. Egli era un buon uomo, molto devoto, pieno di Spirito Santo, in attesa continua dell’arrivo del Messia.26 Lo Spirito Santo, infatti, gli aveva rivelato che non sarebbe morto, finché non avesse visto « il Cristo di Dio ».27 Quel giorno, lo Spirito Santo spinse Simeone a recarsi al tempio, e così, quando Maria e Giuseppe giunsero per presentare il piccolo Gesù al Signore, in ubbidienza alla legge,28 Simeone era presente, e prese il bambino tra le braccia, lodando Dio.29-31 « Signore », egli disse, « ora posso morire contento, perché l’ho visto, come tu mi avevi promesso! Ho visto il Salvatore, che tu hai dato al mondo.32 Egli è la luce che splenderà su tutti i popoli, e sarà la gloria del tuo popolo Israele! »33 Giuseppe e Maria restarono meravigliati per ciò che Simeone diceva di Gesù.34-35 Simeone li benedì, ma poi disse a Maria: « Il dolore ti trapasserà l’anima come una spada, perché questo bambino sarà respinto da molti in Israele, ma questo sarà la causa della loro rovina. Però per molti altri egli sarà fonte d’immensa gioia, e i pensieri più profondi di tanti cuori saranno rivelati ».36-37 Quel giorno, c’era nel tempio anche la profetessa Anna, figlia di Fanuel, della tribù giudea di Aser. Anna era molto vecchia; dopo sette anni di matrimonio era rimasta vedova ed a quel tempo aveva ottantaquattro anni. Ella non s’allontanava mai dal tempio, dove rimaneva giorno e notte, adorando Dio, pregando e spesso digiunando.38 S’avvicinò proprio mentre Simeone stava parlando con Maria e Giuseppe. Anch’ella cominciò a ringraziare Dio e ad annunciare a tutti quelli che aspettavano la redenzione di Gerusalemme che il Messia era finalmente arrivato.39 Quando i genitori di Gesù ebbero fatto tutto quanto è prescritto dalla legge di Dio, se ne tornarono a casa, a Nazaret in Galilea.40 Il bambino divenne un ragazzo forte e robusto, pieno di sapienza. E Dio lo colmava di benedizioni.41-42 Quando ebbe dodici anni, Gesù accompagnò i suoi genitori per la festa annuale di Pasqua, a cui partecipavano ogni anno.43 A celebrazione conclusa, si rimisero in viaggio per ritornare a Nazaret, ma Gesù rimase a Gerusalemme. Il primo giorno, i suoi genitori non s’accorsero della sua mancanza,44 perché pensavano che anche lui fosse in viaggio con la comitiva. Ma quando quella sera non si fece vivo, Maria e Giuseppe cominciarono a cercarlo fra parenti ed amici.45 Non riuscendo a trovarlo, ritornarono a Gerusalemme, per continuare le ricerche.46-47 Finalmente, dopo tre giorni, lo trovarono. Gesù era nel tempio, seduto fra i dottori della legge e parlava con loro di profondi argomenti, meravigliando tutti con la sua intelligenza e le sue risposte.48 I suoi genitori non sapevano cosa pensare: « Figliuolo », gli disse Maria, « perché ci hai fatto questo? Tuo padre ed io eravamo molto preoccupati e ti cercavamo dappertutto! »49 « Che bisogno avevate di cercare? » disse allora Gesù. « Non avete pensato che sarei stato qui nel tempio, nella casa di mio Padre? »50 Ma essi non capivano che cosa volesse dire con quelle parole.51 Poi Gesù tornò a Nazaret con loro e fu ubbidiente ai genitori. E sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel cuore.52 Così Gesù cresceva in statura e in saggezza, ed era amato da Dio e dagli uomini.

1 Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled.2 This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.3 And all went to enrol themselves, every one to his own city.4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;5 to enrol himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being great with child.6 And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered.7 And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.8 And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.9 And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.10 And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people:11 for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.12 And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased.
15 And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.16 And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.17 And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child.18 And all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds.19 But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them.21 And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him.26 And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law,28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 Now lettest thou thy servant depart, Lord, According to thy word, in peace;
30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples;
32 A light for revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of thy people Israel.
33 And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him;34 and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against;35 yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,37 and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day.38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spake of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.39 And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.40 And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.41 And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast;43 and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not;44 but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance:45 and when they found him not, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him.46 And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions:47 and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.48 And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing.49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father’s house?50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
