Nascita di Gesú a Betlemme

1 In quel tempo uscí un decreto da parte di Cesare Augusto, che ordinava il censimento di tutto l'impero.2 Questo fu il primo censimento fatto quando Quirinio era governatore della Siria.

3 Tutti andavano a farsi registrare, ciascuno alla sua città.
4 Dalla Galilea, dalla città di Nazaret, anche Giuseppe salí in Giudea, alla città di Davide chiamata Betlemme, perché era della casa e famiglia di Davide,

5 per farsi registrare con Maria, sua sposa, che era incinta.
6 Mentre erano là, si compí per lei il tempo del parto;

7 ed ella diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, lo fasciò, e lo coricò in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.
8 In quella stessa regione c'erano dei pastori che stavano nei campi e di notte facevano la guardia al loro gregge.9 E un angelo del Signore si presentò a loro e la gloria del Signore risplendé intorno a loro, e furono presi da gran timore.10 L'angelo disse loro: «Non temete, perché io vi porto la buona notizia di una grande gioia che tutto il popolo avrà:11 “Oggi, nella città di Davide, è nato per voi un Salvatore, che è il Cristo, il Signore.

12 E questo vi servirà di segno: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce e coricato in una mangiatoia”».

13 E a un tratto vi fu con l'angelo una moltitudine dell'esercito celeste, che lodava Dio e diceva:

14 «Gloria a Dio nei luoghi altissimi, e pace in terra agli uomini ch'egli gradisce!»
15 Quando gli angeli se ne furono andati verso il cielo, i pastori dicevano tra di loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme e vediamo ciò che è avvenuto, e che il Signore ci ha fatto sapere».16 Andarono in fretta, e trovarono Maria e Giuseppe e il bambino, adagiato nella mangiatoia;17 e, vedutolo, divulgarono quello che era stato loro detto di quel bambino.18 E tutti quelli che li udirono si meravigliarono delle cose dette loro dai pastori.19 Maria serbava in sé tutte queste cose, meditandole in cuor suo.

20 E i pastori tornarono indietro, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutto quello che avevano udito e visto, com'era stato loro annunziato.

Presentazione di Gesú al tempio

21 Quando furono compiuti gli otto giorni dopo i quali egli doveva essere circonciso, gli fu messo il nome di Gesú, che gli era stato dato dall'angelo prima che egli fosse concepito.22 Quando furono compiuti i giorni della loro purificazione secondo la legge di Mosè, portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore,23 come è scritto nella legge del Signore: «Ogni maschio primogenito sarà consacrato al Signore»;

24 e per offrire il sacrificio di cui parla la legge del Signore, di un paio di tortore o di due giovani colombi.

Adorazione di Simeone e di Anna

25 Vi era in Gerusalemme un uomo di nome Simeone; quest'uomo era giusto e timorato di Dio, e aspettava la consolazione d'Israele; lo Spirito Santo era sopra di lui;26 e gli era stato rivelato dallo Spirito Santo che non sarebbe morto prima di aver visto il Cristo del Signore.27 Egli, mosso dallo Spirito, andò nel tempio; e, come i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesú per adempiere a suo riguardo le prescrizioni della legge,

28 lo prese in braccio, e benedisse Dio, dicendo:

29 «Ora, o mio Signore, tu lasci andare in pace il tuo servo, secondo la tua parola;

30 perché i miei occhi hanno visto la tua salvezza,

31 che hai preparata dinanzi a tutti i popoli

32 per essere luce da illuminare le genti e gloria del tuo popolo Israele».
33 Il padre e la madre di Gesú restavano meravigliati delle cose che si dicevano di lui.34 E Simeone li benedisse, dicendo a Maria, madre di lui: «Ecco, egli è posto a caduta e a rialzamento di molti in Israele, come segno di contraddizione

35 (e a te stessa una spada trafiggerà l'anima), affinché i pensieri di molti cuori siano svelati».
36 Vi era anche Anna, profetessa, figlia di Fanuel, della tribú di Aser. Era molto avanti negli anni: dopo essere vissuta con il marito sette anni dalla sua verginità, era rimasta vedova e aveva raggiunto gli ottantaquattro anni.37 Non si allontanava mai dal tempio e serviva Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere.

38 Sopraggiunta in quella stessa ora, anche lei lodava Dio e parlava del bambino a tutti quelli che aspettavano la redenzione di Gerusalemme.

Ritorno a Nazaret

39 Com'ebbero adempiuto tutte le prescrizioni della legge del Signore, tornarono in Galilea, a Nazaret, loro città.

40 E il bambino cresceva e si fortificava; era pieno di sapienza e la grazia di Dio era su di lui.

Gesú dodicenne al tempio

41 I suoi genitori andavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua.
42 Quando giunse all'età di dodici anni, salirono a Gerusalemme, secondo l'usanza della festa;43 passati i giorni della festa, mentre tornavano, il bambino Gesú rimase in Gerusalemme all'insaputa dei genitori;44 i quali, pensando che egli fosse nella comitiva, camminarono una giornata, poi si misero a cercarlo tra i parenti e i conoscenti;45 e, non avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme cercandolo.46 Tre giorni dopo lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai maestri: li ascoltava e faceva loro delle domande;47 e tutti quelli che l'udivano, si stupivano del suo senno e delle sue risposte.48 Quando i suoi genitori lo videro, rimasero stupiti; e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto cosí? Ecco, tuo padre e io ti cercavamo, stando in gran pena».49 Ed egli disse loro: «Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io dovevo trovarmi nella casa del Padre mio?»50 Ed essi non capirono le parole che egli aveva dette loro.

51 Poi discese con loro, andò a Nazaret, e stava loro sottomesso. Sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel suo cuore.

52 E Gesú cresceva in sapienza, in statura e in grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.

LUKE 2

The Birth of Jesus

(Matthew 1.18-25)

1 About that time Emperor Augustus gave orders for the names of all the people to be listed in record books.t

2 These first records were made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.t
3 Everyone had to go to their own hometown to be listed.

4 So Joseph had to leave Nazareth in Galilee and go to Bethlehem in Judea. Long ago Bethlehem had been King David's hometown, and Joseph went there because he was from David's family.
5 Mary was engaged to Joseph and traveled with him to Bethlehem. She was soon going to have a baby, 6 and while they were there,

7 she gave birth to her first-bornt son. She dressed him in baby clothest and laid him on a bed of hay, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds

12 You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay.”

13 Suddenly many other angels came down from heaven and joined in praising God. They said:

14 “Praise God in heaven!
Peace on earth to everyone
who pleases God.”
15 After the angels had left and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about.”

16 They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and they saw the baby lying on a bed of hay.
17 When the shepherds saw Jesus, they told his parents what the angel had said about him. 18 Everyone listened and was surprised.

19 But Mary kept thinking about all this and wondering what it meant.

20 As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said.

21  t Eight days later Jesus' parents did for him what the Law of Moses commands.t And they named him Jesus, just as the angel had told Mary when he promised she would have a baby.

Simeon Praises the Lord

22  t The time came for Mary and Joseph to do what the Law of Moses says a mother is supposed to do after her baby is born.t
They took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and presented him to the Lord, 23 t just as the Law of the Lord says, “Each first-bornt baby boy belongs to the Lord.”

24 The Law of the Lord also says parents have to offer a sacrifice, giving at least a pair of doves or two young pigeons. So that is what Mary and Joseph did.
25 At this time a man named Simeon was living in Jerusalem. Simeon was a good man. He loved God and was waiting for him to save the people of Israel. God's Spirit came to him

26 and told him that he would not die until he had seen Christ the Lord.
27 When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to do what the Law of Moses says should be done for a new baby, the Spirit told Simeon to go into the temple.

28 Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God,

29 “Lord, I am your servant,
and now I can die in peace,
because you have kept
your promise to me.

30 With my own eyes I have seen
what you have done
to save your people,

31 and foreign nations
will also see this.

32  t Your mighty power is a light
for all nations,
and it will bring honor
to your people Israel.”
33 Jesus' parents were surprised at what Simeon had said. 34 Then he blessed them and told Mary, “This child of yours will cause many people in Israel to fall and others to stand. The child will be like a warning sign. Many people will reject him,

35 and you, Mary, will suffer as though you had been stabbed by a dagger. But all this will show what people are really thinking.”

Anna Speaks about //the Child Jesus

37 And now she was 84 years old.t Night and day she served God in the temple by praying and often going without eating.t

38 At this time Anna came in and praised God. She spoke about the child Jesus to everyone who hoped for Jerusalem to be set free.

The Return to Nazareth

40 The child Jesus grew. He became strong and wise, and God blessed him.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

45 When they could not find him with their relatives and friends, they went back to Jerusalem and started looking for him there.
46 Three days later they found Jesus sitting in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking them questions.

47 Everyone who heard him was surprised at how much he knew and at the answers he gave.

48 When his parents found him, they were amazed. His mother said, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been very worried, and we have been searching for you!”
49 Jesus answered, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I would be in my Father's house?”t

50 But they did not understand what he meant.

51 Jesus went back to Nazareth with his parents and obeyed them. His mother kept on thinking about all that had happened.
52  t Jesus became wise, and he grew strong. God was pleased with him and so were the people.
