Lucas 2

Nacimiento de Jesús

1  En esos días, Augusto, el emperador de Roma, decretó que se hiciera un censo en todo el Imperio romano. 2 (Este fue el primer censo que se hizo cuando Cirenio era gobernador de Siria). 3 Todos regresaron a los pueblos de sus antepasados a fin de inscribirse para el censo. 4 Como José era descendiente del rey David, tuvo que ir a Belén de Judea, el antiguo hogar de David. Viajó hacia allí desde la aldea de Nazaret de Galilea. 5 Llevó consigo a María, su prometida, cuyo embarazo ya estaba avanzado.

6 Mientras estaban allí, llegó el momento para que naciera el bebé. 7 María dio a luz a su primer hijo, un varón. Lo envolvió en tiras de tela y lo acostó en un pesebre, porque no había alojamiento disponible para ellos.

Pastores y ángeles

8 Esa noche había unos pastores en los campos cercanos, que estaban cuidando sus rebaños de ovejas. 9 De repente, apareció entre ellos un ángel del Señor, y el resplandor de la gloria del Señor los rodeó. Los pastores estaban aterrados, 10 pero el ángel los tranquilizó. «No tengan miedo —dijo—. Les traigo buenas noticias que darán gran alegría a toda la gente. 11 ¡El Salvador —sí, el Mesías, el Señor— ha nacido hoy en Belén, la ciudad de David! 12 Y lo reconocerán por la siguiente señal: encontrarán a un niño envuelto en tiras de tela, acostado en un pesebre».

13 De pronto, se unió a ese ángel una inmensa multitud —los ejércitos celestiales— que alababan a Dios y decían:

14 «Gloria a Dios en el cielo más alto
y paz en la tierra para aquellos en quienes Dios se complace».

15 Cuando los ángeles regresaron al cielo, los pastores se dijeron unos a otros: «¡Vayamos a Belén! Veamos esto que ha sucedido y que el Señor nos anunció».

16 Fueron de prisa a la aldea y encontraron a María y a José. Y allí estaba el niño, acostado en el pesebre. 17 Después de verlo, los pastores contaron a todos lo que había sucedido y lo que el ángel les había dicho acerca del niño. 18 Todos los que escucharon el relato de los pastores quedaron asombrados, 19 pero María guardaba todas estas cosas en el corazón y pensaba en ellas con frecuencia. 20 Los pastores regresaron a sus rebaños, glorificando y alabando a Dios por lo que habían visto y oído. Todo sucedió tal como el ángel les había dicho.

Presentación de Jesús en el templo

21 Ocho días después, cuando el bebé fue circuncidado, le pusieron por nombre Jesús, el nombre que había dado el ángel aun antes de que el niño fuera concebido.

22 Luego llegó el tiempo para la ofrenda de purificación, como exigía la ley de Moisés después del nacimiento de un niño; así que sus padres lo llevaron a Jerusalén para presentarlo al Señor. 23 La ley del Señor dice: «Si el primer hijo de una mujer es varón, habrá que dedicarlo al SEÑOR»t. 24 Así que ellos ofrecieron el sacrificio requerido en la ley del Señor, que consistía en «un par de tórtolas o dos pichones de paloma»t.

Profecía de Simeón

25 En ese tiempo, había en Jerusalén un hombre llamado Simeón. Era justo y devoto, y esperaba con anhelo que llegara el Mesías y rescatara a Israel. El Espíritu Santo estaba sobre él 26 y le había revelado que no moriría sin antes ver al Mesías del Señor. 27 Ese día, el Espíritu lo guió al templo. De manera que, cuando María y José llegaron para presentar al bebé Jesús ante el Señor como exigía la ley, 28 Simeón estaba allí. Tomó al niño en sus brazos y alabó a Dios diciendo:

29 «Soberano Señor, permite ahora que tu siervo muera en paz,
como prometiste.

30 He visto tu salvación,

31 la que preparaste para toda la gente.

32 Él es una luz para revelar a Dios a las naciones,
¡y es la gloria de tu pueblo Israel!».

33 Los padres de Jesús estaban asombrados de lo que se decía de él. 34 Entonces Simeón les dio su bendición y le dijo a María, la madre del bebé: «Este niño está destinado a provocar la caída de muchos en Israel, pero también será la alegría de muchos otros. Fue enviado como una señal de Dios, pero muchos se le opondrán. 35 Como resultado, saldrán a la luz los pensamientos más profundos de muchos corazones, y una espada atravesará tu propia alma».

Profecía de Ana

36 En el templo también estaba Ana, una profetisa muy anciana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser. Su esposo había muerto cuando sólo llevaban siete años de casados. 37 Después ella vivió como viuda hasta la edad de ochenta y cuatro años.t Nunca salía del templo, sino que permanecía allí de día y de noche adorando a Dios en ayuno y oración.38 Llegó justo en el momento que Simeón hablaba con María y José, y comenzó a alabar a Dios. Habló del niño a todos los que esperaban que Dios rescatara a Jerusalén.

39 Una vez que los padres de Jesús cumplieron con todas las exigencias de la ley del Señor, regresaron a su casa en Nazaret de Galilea. 40 Allí el niño crecía sano y fuerte. Estaba lleno de sabiduría, y el favor de Dios estaba sobre él.

Jesús habla con los maestros

41 Cada año, los padres de Jesús iban a Jerusalén para el festival de la Pascua. 42 Cuando Jesús tenía doce años, asistieron al festival como siempre. 43 Una vez terminada la celebración, emprendieron el regreso a Nazaret, pero Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén. Al principio, sus padres no se dieron cuenta, 44 porque creyeron que estaba entre los otros viajeros; pero cuando se hizo de noche y no aparecía, comenzaron a buscarlo entre sus parientes y amigos.

45 Como no pudieron encontrarlo, regresaron a Jerusalén para buscarlo allí. 46 Tres días después, por fin lo encontraron en el templo, sentado entre los maestros religiosos, escuchándolos y haciéndoles preguntas. 47 Todos los que lo oían quedaban asombrados de su entendimiento y de sus respuestas.

48 Sus padres no sabían qué pensar.
—Hijo, ¿por qué nos has hecho esto? —le dijo su madre—. Tu padre y yo hemos estado desesperados buscándote por todas partes.

49 —¿Pero por qué tuvieron que buscarme? —les preguntó—. ¿No sabían que tengo que estar en la casa de mi Padre?t

50 Pero ellos no entendieron lo que les quiso decir.

51 Luego regresó con sus padres a Nazaret, y vivió en obediencia a ellos. Y su madre guardó todas esas cosas en el corazón.

52 Jesús crecía en sabiduría y en estatura, y en el favor de Dios y de toda la gente.

LUKE 2

The Birth of Jesus

(Matthew 1.18-25)

1 About that time Emperor Augustus gave orders for the names of all the people to be listed in record books.t

2 These first records were made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.t
3 Everyone had to go to their own hometown to be listed.

4 So Joseph had to leave Nazareth in Galilee and go to Bethlehem in Judea. Long ago Bethlehem had been King David's hometown, and Joseph went there because he was from David's family.
5 Mary was engaged to Joseph and traveled with him to Bethlehem. She was soon going to have a baby, 6 and while they were there,

7 she gave birth to her first-bornt son. She dressed him in baby clothest and laid him on a bed of hay, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds

12 You will know who he is, because you will find him dressed in baby clothes and lying on a bed of hay.”

13 Suddenly many other angels came down from heaven and joined in praising God. They said:

14 “Praise God in heaven!
Peace on earth to everyone
who pleases God.”
15 After the angels had left and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about.”

16 They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and they saw the baby lying on a bed of hay.
17 When the shepherds saw Jesus, they told his parents what the angel had said about him. 18 Everyone listened and was surprised.

19 But Mary kept thinking about all this and wondering what it meant.

20 As the shepherds returned to their sheep, they were praising God and saying wonderful things about him. Everything they had seen and heard was just as the angel had said.

21  t Eight days later Jesus' parents did for him what the Law of Moses commands.t And they named him Jesus, just as the angel had told Mary when he promised she would have a baby.

Simeon Praises the Lord

22  t The time came for Mary and Joseph to do what the Law of Moses says a mother is supposed to do after her baby is born.t
They took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and presented him to the Lord, 23 t just as the Law of the Lord says, “Each first-bornt baby boy belongs to the Lord.”

24 The Law of the Lord also says parents have to offer a sacrifice, giving at least a pair of doves or two young pigeons. So that is what Mary and Joseph did.
25 At this time a man named Simeon was living in Jerusalem. Simeon was a good man. He loved God and was waiting for him to save the people of Israel. God's Spirit came to him

26 and told him that he would not die until he had seen Christ the Lord.
27 When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to do what the Law of Moses says should be done for a new baby, the Spirit told Simeon to go into the temple.

28 Simeon took the baby Jesus in his arms and praised God,

29 “Lord, I am your servant,
and now I can die in peace,
because you have kept
your promise to me.

30 With my own eyes I have seen
what you have done
to save your people,

31 and foreign nations
will also see this.

32  t Your mighty power is a light
for all nations,
and it will bring honor
to your people Israel.”
33 Jesus' parents were surprised at what Simeon had said. 34 Then he blessed them and told Mary, “This child of yours will cause many people in Israel to fall and others to stand. The child will be like a warning sign. Many people will reject him,

35 and you, Mary, will suffer as though you had been stabbed by a dagger. But all this will show what people are really thinking.”

Anna Speaks about //the Child Jesus

37 And now she was 84 years old.t Night and day she served God in the temple by praying and often going without eating.t

38 At this time Anna came in and praised God. She spoke about the child Jesus to everyone who hoped for Jerusalem to be set free.

The Return to Nazareth

40 The child Jesus grew. He became strong and wise, and God blessed him.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

45 When they could not find him with their relatives and friends, they went back to Jerusalem and started looking for him there.
46 Three days later they found Jesus sitting in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking them questions.

47 Everyone who heard him was surprised at how much he knew and at the answers he gave.

48 When his parents found him, they were amazed. His mother said, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been very worried, and we have been searching for you!”
49 Jesus answered, “Why did you have to look for me? Didn't you know that I would be in my Father's house?”t

50 But they did not understand what he meant.

51 Jesus went back to Nazareth with his parents and obeyed them. His mother kept on thinking about all that had happened.
52  t Jesus became wise, and he grew strong. God was pleased with him and so were the people.
