La autoridad de Jesús

1 Un día, mientras Jesús estaba en el templo enseñando a la gente y anunciando la buena noticia, llegaron los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley, junto con los ancianos,2 y le dijeron:
—¿Con qué autoridad haces esto? ¿Quién te dio esta autoridad?3 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo también les voy a hacer una pregunta. Respóndanme:4 ¿Quién envió a Juan a bautizar, Dios o los hombres?5 Comenzaron a discutir unos con otros: «Si respondemos que Dios lo envió, va a decir: “¿Por qué no le creyeron?”6 Y no podemos decir que fueron los hombres, porque la gente nos matará a pedradas, ya que todos están seguros de que Juan era un profeta.»7 Así que respondieron que no sabían quién había enviado a Juan a bautizar.8 Entonces Jesús les contestó:
—Pues yo tampoco les digo con qué autoridad hago esto.

La parábola de los labradores malvados

9 Luego empezó Jesús a hablar a la gente, y contó esta parábola:
—Un hombre plantó un viñedo, lo alquiló a unos labradores y emprendió un largo viaje.10 A su debido tiempo, mandó un criado a pedir a los labradores la parte de la cosecha que le correspondía; pero ellos lo golpearon y lo enviaron con las manos vacías.11 Entonces el dueño mandó otro criado; pero también a éste lo insultaron, lo golpearon y lo enviaron con las manos vacías.12 Volvió a mandar otro, pero los labradores también lo hirieron y lo echaron fuera.13 »Por fin el dueño del terreno dijo: “¿Qué haré? Mandaré a mi hijo querido; tal vez lo respetarán.”14 Pero cuando los labradores lo vieron, se dijeron unos a otros: “Éste es el que ha de recibir la herencia; matémoslo, para que la propiedad pase a poder nuestro.”15 Así que lo sacaron del viñedo y lo mataron.
»¿Y qué creen ustedes que hará con ellos el dueño del viñedo?16 Pues irá y matará a esos labradores, y dará el viñedo a otros.
Al oír esto, dijeron:
—¡Eso jamás!17 Pero Jesús los miró, y dijo:
—Entonces ¿qué significa esto que dicen las Escrituras?:

“La piedra que los constructores despreciaron
se ha convertido en la piedra principal.”18 Cualquiera que caiga sobre esa piedra, quedará hecho pedazos; y si la piedra cae sobre alguien, lo hará polvo.19 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley quisieron arrestar a Jesús en aquel mismo momento, porque comprendieron que al decir esta parábola se refería a ellos. Pero tenían miedo de la gente.

La pregunta sobre los impuestos

20 Mandaron a unos espías que, aparentando ser hombres honrados, hicieran decir a Jesús algo que les diera pretexto para ponerlo bajo el poder y la jurisdicción del gobernador romano.21 Éstos le preguntaron:
—Maestro, sabemos que lo que tú dices y enseñas es correcto, y que no buscas dar gusto a los hombres. Tú enseñas de veras el camino de Dios.22 ¿Está bien que paguemos impuestos al emperador romano, o no?23 Jesús, dándose cuenta de la mala intención que llevaban, les dijo:24 —Enséñenme una moneda de denario. ¿De quién es la cara y el nombre que aquí está escrito?
Le contestaron:
—Del emperador.25 Jesús les dijo:
—Pues den al emperador lo que es del emperador, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.26 Y en nada de lo que él decía delante de la gente encontraron pretexto para arrestarlo, así que admirados de su respuesta se callaron.

La pregunta sobre la resurrección

27 Después algunos saduceos fueron a ver a Jesús. Los saduceos niegan que los muertos resuciten; por eso le presentaron este caso:28 —Maestro, Moisés nos dejó escrito que si un hombre casado muere sin haber tenido hijos con su mujer, el hermano del difunto deberá tomar por esposa a la viuda para darle hijos al hermano que murió.29 Pues bien, había una vez siete hermanos, el primero de los cuales se casó, pero murió sin dejar hijos.30 El segundo31 y el tercero se casaron con ella, y lo mismo hicieron los demás, pero los siete murieron sin dejar hijos.32 Finalmente murió también la mujer.33 Pues bien, en la resurrección, ¿de cuál de ellos será esposa esta mujer, si los siete estuvieron casados con ella?34 Jesús les contestó:
—En la vida presente, los hombres y las mujeres se casan;35 pero aquellos que Dios juzgue que merecen gozar de la vida venidera y resucitar, sean hombres o mujeres, ya no se casarán,36 porque ya no pueden morir. Pues serán como los ángeles, y serán hijos de Dios por haber resucitado.37 Hasta el mismo Moisés, en el pasaje de la zarza que ardía, nos hace saber que los muertos resucitan. Allí dice que el Señor es el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob.38 ¡Y él no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para él todos están vivos!39 Algunos maestros de la ley le dijeron entonces:
—Bien dicho, Maestro.40 Y ya no se atrevieron a hacerle más preguntas.

¿De quién desciende el Mesías?

41 Jesús les preguntó:
—¿Por qué dicen que el Mesías desciende de David?42 Pues David mismo, en el libro de los Salmos, dice:

“El Señor dijo a mi Señor:
Siéntate a mi derecha,43 hasta que yo haga de tus enemigos
el estrado de tus pies.”44 ¿Cómo puede entonces el Mesías descender de David, si David mismo lo llama Señor?

Jesús denuncia a los maestros de la ley

45 Toda la gente estaba escuchando, y Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:46 «Cuídense de los maestros de la ley, pues les gusta andar con ropas largas, y quieren que los saluden con todo respeto en las plazas. Buscan los asientos de honor en las sinagogas y los mejores lugares en las comidas;47 y les quitan sus casas a las viudas, y para disimularlo hacen largas oraciones. Ellos recibirán mayor castigo.»

Luke 20

1 And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders;2 and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?3 And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me:4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him?6 But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.7 And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.8 And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.9 And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time.10 And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.11 And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty.12 And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth.13 And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him.14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.15 And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them?16 He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.17 But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner?

18 Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.19 And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them.20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.21 And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,24 Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar’s.25 And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.26 And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.27 And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection;28 and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man’s brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.29 There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless;30 and the second:31 and the third took her; and likewise the seven also left no children, and died.32 Afterward the woman also died.33 In the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had her to wife.34 And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage:35 but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:36 for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the place concerning the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.38 Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.39 And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said.40 For they durst not any more ask him any question.41 And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David’s son?42 For David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43 Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet.

44 David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son?45 And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples,46 Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts;47 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation.
