Discusión sobre la autoridad de Jesús

1 Un día Jesús estaba enseñando y contando las buenas noticiast del reino en el área del templot. Los jefes de los sacerdotes, los maestros de la ley y los ancianos líderes vinieron a hablar con Jesús,

2 y le dijeron:
—Dinos, ¿con qué autoridad haces esto? ¿Quién te la dio?

3 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo también les haré una pregunta. Respóndanme,

4 ¿el bautismot de Juan era de Dios o de los hombres?
5 Ellos hablaron sobre eso y dijeron entre ellos: «Si decimos que venía de Dios, Jesús nos preguntará por qué entonces no le creímos.6 Pero si decimos que venía de los hombres, nos matarán a pedradas porque todos creen que Juan era un profeta».

7 Así que respondieron:
—No sabemos de dónde venía.

8 Entonces Jesús les dijo:
—Yo tampoco les voy a decir con qué autoridad hago estas cosas.

Historia de los labradores perversos

9 Luego Jesús le contó a la gente esta historiat: «Un hombre plantó un viñedo y lo alquiló a unos labradores. Luego se fue por mucho tiempo.10 Y a su debido tiempo, mandó a un siervo a pedirles a los labradores la parte de la cosecha que le pertenecía a él. Pero los labradores lo golpearon y lo enviaron con las manos vacías.11 Entonces, el hombre mandó a otro siervo, pero los labradores lo golpearon también. Lo trataron muy mal y lo enviaron de vuelta con las manos vacías.12 Entonces el hombre mandó a un tercer siervo, pero los labradores lo hirieron y lo echaron de allí.13 Entonces el dueño del viñedo dijo: "¿Qué debo hacer? Mandaré a mi hijo amado. Tal vez a él si lo respetarán".14 Pero cuando los labradores vieron al hijo del dueño, hablaron entre ellos y dijeron: "Este es el heredero, ¡matémoslo para quedarnos con la herencia!"

15 Lo echaron del viñedo y lo mataron.
»¿Qué les hará el dueño del viñedo a los labradores?

16 El dueño vendrá, los matará y les dará el viñedo a otros labradores».
Cuando la gente escuchó esto, dijeron:
—¡Eso nunca!

17 Pero Jesús los miró y dijo:
—Entonces, ¿qué significado tiene esto que está escrito?:
»"La piedra que los constructores rechazaron
se ha convertido en la piedra principal".t

18 »Todo el que caiga sobre esa piedra se hará pedazos y al que esa piedra le caiga encima lo hará polvo.

19 Los maestros de la ley y los jefes de los sacerdotes comprendieron que la historia se refería a ellos y por eso lo querían arrestar, pero tenían miedo de lo que les pudiera hacer el pueblo.

El pago de impuestos

20 Observaban a Jesús todo el tiempo y enviaron a escucharlo a unos espías que fingían tener buenas intenciones. Querían usar en su contra algo que él dijera y así poder entregarlo al poder y autoridad del gobernador.

21 Entonces los espías le preguntaron a Jesús:
—Maestro, sabemos que tú hablas y enseñas sólo lo correcto, que para ti todos son iguales y que enseñas con sinceridad el camino de Dios.

22 Entonces, ¿está bien que paguemos impuestos al emperador o no?

23 Jesús sabía que le querían poner una trampa. Entonces les dijo:

24 —Muéstrenme una moneda de platat. ¿De quién es la imagen que está en la moneda y el nombre que está escrito en ella?
Ellos dijeron:
—Del emperador.

25 Así que Jesús les dijo.
—Entonces den al emperador lo que es del emperador y a Dios lo que es de Dios.

26 Los hombres se asombraron de su respuesta y se quedaron sin palabras. No pudieron usar en su contra nada de lo que dijo delante de la gente.

La pregunta sobre la resurrección

27 Después, unos saduceost, los que dicen que no hay resurrección, se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron:
28 —Maestro, Moisést nos escribió que si un hombre casado moría sin haber tenido hijos, su hermano debía casarse con la viuda. De esa manera los hijos que tuvieran serían considerados hijos del hermano fallecido.t29 Una vez hubo siete hermanos. El primero se casó, pero más tarde murió sin dejar hijos.30 Entonces el segundo hermano se casó con la viuda y también murió.31 Luego el tercer hermano se casó con la viuda, pero también murió. Lo mismo pasó con todos los demás hermanos. Todos murieron sin haber tenido hijos.32 Tiempo después, la mujer también murió.

33 Todos los siete hermanos se habían casado con ella. El día en que la gente resucite, ¿de quién será esposa la viuda?

34 Jesús les dijo:
—En esta vida la gente se casa y se da en matrimonio.35 Algunos serán considerados dignos de ser resucitados de la muerte y participar en la vida venidera, pero entonces no se casarán ni serán dados en matrimonio.36 En esa vida, la gente será como ángeles y no morirá. Ellos serán hijos de Dios porque habrán sido resucitados.37 Pero que la gente es resucitada de la muerte lo demostró Moisés mismo en la historia sobre el arbustot ardiente, pues ahí él llama al Señor El Dios de Abrahamt, el Dios de Isaact y el Dios de Jacobt.t

38 Él no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, porque para Dios todos están vivos.

39 Algunos de los maestros de la ley dijeron:
—Maestro, ¡qué buena respuesta!

40 Nadie más se atrevió a hacerle otra pregunta.

¿De quién es hijo el Cristo?

41 Entonces Jesús les preguntó:
—¿Por qué dicen que el Cristot es el Hijo de Davidt?42 En el libro de los Salmos, el mismo David dice:
»"El Señor Dios le dijo a mi Señor:
Siéntate a mi derecha,
43 y yo pondré a tus enemigos
bajo tu podert.t

44 Entonces si David llama al Cristo "Señor", ¿cómo puede él ser su hijo?

Advertencia a los maestros de la ley

45 Mientras toda la gente escuchaba a Jesús, él les dijo a sus seguidores:46 «Tengan cuidado de los maestros de la ley. A ellos les gusta pasearse vistiendo ropa que muestre su autoridad y les encanta que la gente los salude con respeto en las plazas de mercado. También les gusta mucho sentarse en los lugares de honor de las sinagogast y tener los mejores lugares en los banquetes.

47 Ellos se roban los bienes de las viudas y para disimularlo hacen largas oraciones. Por eso Dios los castigará con más severidad».

Luke 20

Jesus' Authority Questioned

1 On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, 2 and they spoke, saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?"3 Jesus answered and said to them, "I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me:4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?"5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'6 But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet."7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from.8 And Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

Parable of the Vine-growers

9 And He began to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.10 At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.11 And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed.12 And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out.13 The owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.'14 But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, 'This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.'15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?16 He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others." When they heard it, they said, "May it never be!"17 But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written:
'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,
THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone'?18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."

Tribute to Caesar

19 The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.20 So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.21 They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth.22 Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?"23 But He detected their trickery and said to them,24 "Show Me a tdenarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's."25 And He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."26 And they were unable to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.

Is There a Resurrection?

27 Now there came to Him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection),28 and they questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES, having a wife, AND HE IS CHILDLESS, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.29 Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless;30 and the second31 and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.32 Finally the woman died also.33 In the resurrection therefore, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."

34 Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;36 for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.38 Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him."39 Some of the scribes answered and said, "Teacher, You have spoken well."40 For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.

41 Then He said to them, "How is it that they say tthe Christ is David's son?42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms,
'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
"SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

43 UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'44 Therefore David calls Him 'Lord,' and how is He his son?"

45 And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples,46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,47 who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation."
