EVANGELO SECONDO S. LUCA 21

1 Poi, alzati gli occhi, Gesù vide dei ricchi che gettavano i loro doni nella cassa delle offerte. 2 Vide pure una vedova poveretta che vi gettava due spiccioli; 3 e disse: In verità vi dico che questa povera vedova ha gettato più di tutti; 4 poiché tutti costoro hanno gettato nelle offerte del loro superfluo; ma costei, del suo necessario, v'ha gettato tutto quanto avea per vivere. 5 E facendo alcuni notare come il tempio fosse adorno di belle pietre e di doni consacrati, egli disse: 6 Quant'è a queste cose che voi contemplate, verranno i giorni che non sarà lasciata pietra sopra pietra che non sia diroccata. 7 Ed essi gli domandarono: Maestro, quando avverranno dunque queste cose? e quale sarà il segno del tempo in cui queste cose staranno per succedere? 8 Ed egli disse: Guardate di non esser sedotti; perché molti verranno sotto il mio nome, dicendo: Son io; e: II tempo è vicino; non andate dietro a loro. 9 E quando udrete parlar di guerre e di sommosse, non siate spaventati; perché bisogna che queste cose avvengano prima; ma la fine non verrà subito dopo. 10 Allora disse loro: Si leverà nazione contro nazione e regno contro regno; 11 vi saranno gran terremoti, e in diversi luoghi pestilenze e carestie; vi saranno fenomeni spaventevoli e gran segni dal cielo. 12 Ma prima di tutte queste cose, vi metteranno le mani addosso e vi perseguiteranno, dandovi in man delle sinagoghe e mettendovi in prigione, traendovi dinanzi a re e governatori, a cagion del mio nome. 13 Ma ciò vi darà occasione di render testimonianza. 14 Mettetevi dunque in cuore di non premeditar come rispondere a vostra difesa, 15 perché io vi darò una parola e una sapienza alle quali tutti i vostri avversari non potranno contrastare né contraddire. 16 Or voi sarete traditi perfino da genitori, da fratelli, da parenti e da amici; faranno morire parecchi di voi; 17 e sarete odiati da tutti a cagion del mio nome; 18 ma neppure un capello del vostro capo perirà. 19 Con la vostra perseveranza guadagnerete le anime vostre. 20 Quando vedrete Gerusalemme circondata d'eserciti, sappiate allora che la sua desolazione è vicina. 21 Allora quelli che sono in Giudea, fuggano ai monti; e quelli che sono nella città, se ne partano; e quelli che sono per la campagna, non entrino in lei. 22 Perché quelli son giorni di vendetta, affinché tutte le cose che sono scritte, siano adempite. 23 Guai alle donne che saranno incinte, e a quelle che allatteranno in que' giorni! Perché vi sarà gran distretta nel paese ed ira su questo popolo. 24 E cadranno sotto il taglio della spada, e saran menati in cattività fra tutte le genti; e Gerusalemme sarà calpestata dai Gentili, finché i tempi de' Gentili siano compiti. 25 E vi saranno de' segni nel sole, nella luna e nelle stelle; e sulla terra, angoscia delle nazioni, sbigottite dal rimbombo del mare e delle onde; 26 gli uomini venendo meno per la paurosa aspettazione di quel che sarà per accadere al mondo; poiché le potenze de' cieli saranno scrollate. 27 E allora vedranno il Figliuol dell'uomo venir sopra le nuvole con potenza e gran gloria. 28 Ma quando queste cose cominceranno ad avvenire, rialzatevi, levate il capo, perché la vostra redenzione è vicina. 29 E disse loro una parabola: Guardate il fico e tutti gli alberi; 30 quando cominciano a germogliare, voi, guardando, riconoscete da voi stessi che l'estate è oramai vicina. 31 Così anche voi quando vedrete avvenir queste cose, sappiate che il regno di Dio è vicino. 32 In verità io vi dico che questa generazione non passerà prima che tutte queste cose siano avvenute. 33 Il cielo e la terra passeranno, ma le mie parole non passeranno. 34 Badate a voi stessi, che talora i vostri cuori non siano aggravati da crapula, da ubriachezza e dalle ansiose sollecitudini di questa vita, e che quel giorno non vi venga addosso all'improvviso come un laccio; 35 perché verrà sopra tutti quelli che abitano sulla faccia di tutta la terra. 36 Vegliate dunque, pregando in ogni tempo, affinché siate in grado di scampare a tutte queste cose che stanno per accadere, e di comparire dinanzi al Figliuol dell'uomo. 37 Or di giorno egli insegnava nel tempio; e la notte usciva e la passava sul monte detto degli Ulivi. 38 E tutto il popolo, la mattina di buon'ora, veniva a lui nel tempio per udirlo.

LUKE 21

A Widow's Offering

(Mark 12.41-44)

1 Jesus looked up and saw some rich people tossing their gifts into the offering box. 2 He also saw a poor widow putting in a few cents. 3 And he said, “I tell you that this poor woman has put in more than all the others.

4 Everyone else gave what they didn't need. But she is very poor and gave everything she had.”

The Temple Will Be Destroyed

(Matthew 24.1,2; Mark 13.1,2)

6 “Do you see these stones? The time is coming when not one of them will be left in place. They will all be knocked down.”

Warning about Trouble

(Matthew 24.3-14; Mark 13.3-13)

7  t Some people asked, “Teacher, when will all this happen? How can we know when these things are about to take place?”

8 Jesus replied:
Don't be fooled by those who will come and claim to be me. They will say, “I am Christ!” and “Now is the time!” But don't follow them.

9 When you hear about wars and riots, don't be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but this isn't the end.
10 Nations will go to war against one another, and kingdoms will attack each other.

11 There will be great earthquakes, and in many places people will starve to death and suffer terrible diseases. All sorts of frightening things will be seen in the sky.
12 Before all this happens, you will be arrested and punished. You will be tried in your synagogues and put in jail. Because of me you will be placed on trial before kings and governors.

13 But this will be your chance to tell about your faith.
14  t Don't worry about what you will say to defend yourselves. 15 I will give you the wisdom to know what to say. None of your enemies will be able to oppose you or to say that you are wrong. 16 You will be betrayed by your own parents, brothers, family, and friends. Some of you will even be killed. 17 Because of me, you will be hated by everyone. 18 But don't worry!t

19 You will be saved by being faithful to me.

Jerusalem Will Be Destroyed

(Matthew 24.15-21; Mark 13.14-19)

24 Some of them will be killed by swords. Others will be carried off to foreign countries. Jerusalem will be overrun by foreign nations until their time comes to an end.

When the Son of Man Appears

(Matthew 24.29-31; Mark 13.24-27)

28 When all of this starts happening, stand up straight and be brave. You will soon be set free.

A Lesson from a Fig Tree

(Matthew 24.32-35; Mark 13.28-31)

29 Then Jesus told them a story:
When you see a fig tree or any other tree 30 putting out leaves, you know that summer will soon come. 31 So, when you see these things happening, you know that God's kingdom will soon be here. 32 You can be sure that some of the people of this generation will still be alive when all of this takes place.

33 The sky and the earth won't last forever, but my words will.

A Warning

36 Watch out and keep praying that you can escape all that is going to happen and that the Son of Man will be pleased with you.
37  t Jesus taught in the temple each day, and he spent each night on the Mount of Olives. 38 Everyone got up early and came to the temple to hear him teach.
