Lukas 23

Jesus for Pilatus

(Matt 27,1–2.11–14; Mark 15,1–5; Joh 18,33–38)

1  t Då reiste dei seg alle og førte han til Pilatus. 2 t Der tok dei til å koma med skuldingar mot han. Dei sa: «Vi har funne at denne mannen fører folket vårt på avvegar. Han forbyd oss å gje keisaren skatt, og han seier at han er Messias, altså konge.» 3 Pilatus spurde han: «Er du kongen over jødane?» «Du seier det», svara Jesus. 4 Då sa Pilatus til overprestane og folket: «Eg finn inga skuld hos denne mannen.»

5 t Men dei tok sterkare i: «Han eggjar opp folket i heile Judea med læra si. Han tok til i Galilea, og no er han komen heilt hit.»
6 Då Pilatus høyrde det, spurde han om mannen var frå Galilea,

7 tt og då han fekk vita at han var under domsmakta til Herodes, sende han Jesus over dit, for Herodes òg var i Jerusalem i dei dagane.

Jesus for Herodes

8  t Herodes vart svært glad då han fekk sjå Jesus, for han hadde høyrt om han og lenge ønskt å få møta han. No vona han å få sjå Jesus gjera eit teikn. 9 Han stilte han mange spørsmål, men Jesus svara ikkje eit ord. 10 Overprestane og dei skriftlærde stod der og kom med sterke skuldingar mot han. 11 Herodes vanæra han og spotta han saman med soldatane sine. Han la ei staseleg kappe om han og sende han tilbake til Pilatus.

12 t Den dagen vart Herodes og Pilatus vener; før hadde det vore fiendskap mellom dei.

Pilatus feller dommen

(Matt 27,15–26; Mark 15,6–15; Joh 19,6–16)

13 Så kalla Pilatus saman overprestane, rådsherrane og folket 14 og sa til dei: «De har ført denne mannen fram for meg og sagt at han fører folket på avvegar. No har eg spurt han ut medan de høyrde på, men eg har ikkje funne han skuldig i noko av det de klagar han for. 15 Det har ikkje Herodes heller, for han har sendt han tilbake til oss. Mannen har såleis ikkje gjort noko som fortener dødsstraff. 16 Difor vil eg la han bli piska og så setja han fri.» 17 t {{Men til høgtida måtte han gje dei ein fange fri.}} 18 Då ropa dei alle som ein: «Bort med han! Gjev oss Barabbas fri!»

19 t – Barabbas var ein mann som sat fengsla for opprør i byen og for mord.
20 Igjen tala Pilatus til dei, for han ville gjerne gje Jesus fri. 21 Men dei ropa imot han: «Krossfest han! Krossfest!» 22 Då tok han ordet tredje gongen: «Kva vondt har han så gjort? Eg har ikkje funne han skuldig i noko som kan straffast med døden. Eg vil la han bli piska og så setja han fri.»

23 t Men dei pressa han og kravde med høge skrik at Jesus skulle krossfestast, og skriket deira fekk overtaket.
24 Då felte Pilatus dommen; det skulle bli som dei kravde.

25 Han frigav den dei bad om, han som sat fengsla for opprør og mord. Men han overgav Jesus til dei, og dei fekk viljen sin.

Jesus blir krossfest

(Matt 27,31–44; Mark 15,20–32; Joh 19,17–27)

26  t Så førte dei han bort. På vegen greip dei fatt i ein mann som kom inn frå markene, Simon frå Kyréne. Og dei la krossen på Simon for at han skulle gå bak Jesus og bera.
27 Ein stor folkehop følgde med, og mellom dei var det mange kvinner som jamra og gret over han. 28 Men Jesus snudde seg til dei og sa: «Jerusalems døtrer! Gråt ikkje over meg, men gråt over dykk sjølve og borna dykkar. 29 t For det kjem dagar då folk skal seia: ‘Lukkelege er dei barnlause, dei morsliv som ikkje har fødd, og dei bryst som ikkje har gjeve die!’ 30 t Då skal dei seia til fjella: ‘Fall over oss!’ Og til haugane: ‘Løyn oss!’

31 For gjer dei slik med det grøne treet, korleis skal det då gå med det tørre?»
32  t To andre forbrytarar vart òg førte bort og skulle avrettast saman med Jesus. 33 Og då dei kom til den staden som heiter Hovudskallen, krossfeste dei både han og forbrytarane, den eine på høgre sida hans, den andre på venstre. 34 tt {{Men Jesus sa: «Far, tilgjev dei, for dei veit ikkje kva dei gjer.»}} Så kasta dei lodd om kleda hans og delte dei mellom seg. 35 Folket stod og såg på, men rådsherrane spotta han: «Andre har han frelst», sa dei, «lat han no frelsa seg sjølv dersom han er Guds Messias, den utvalde!» 36 tt Soldatane òg hånte han. Dei gav han vineddik 37 og sa: «Er du kongen over jødane, så frels deg sjølv!»

38 For det var sett ei innskrift over han: «Dette er kongen over jødane.»
39 Den eine av forbrytarane som hang der, spotta han og sa: «Er ikkje du Messias? Frels deg sjølv og oss!» 40 Men den andre tala han til rette og sa: «Har du ikkje ærefrykt for Gud, endå du er under same dommen? 41 For oss er dommen rettferdig, vi får berre att for det vi har gjort. Men han har ikkje gjort noko urett.» 42 Og han sa: «Jesus, kom meg i hug når du kjem til ditt rike!»

43 t Jesus svara: «Sanneleg, eg seier deg: I dag skal du vera med meg i paradis.»

Jesus døyr

(Matt 27,45–56; Mark 15,33–41; Joh 19,28–30)

44  t Det var alt kring den sjette timen. Då fall det mørker over heile landet, og mørkret låg til den niande timen, 45 t for sola lyste ikkje lenger. Forhenget i tempelet rivna midt i to,

46 t og Jesus ropa med høg røyst: «Far, i dine hender gjev eg mi ånd! » Med desse orda anda han ut.
47 Då offiseren såg det som hende, lova han Gud og sa: «Denne mannen var sanneleg rettferdig!» 48 t Og alle som hadde samla seg for å sjå på, slo seg for bringa då dei såg det som hende, og gjekk derifrå.

49 t Men alle som kjende han, stod langt borte og såg på. Mellom desse var òg dei kvinnene som hadde følgt han frå Galilea.

Jesus blir gravlagd

(Matt 27,57–61; Mark 15,42–47; Joh 19,38–42)

50 Det var ein rådsherre som heitte Josef. Han var ein god og rettferdig mann 51 t og hadde ikkje vore med på det dei andre hadde vedteke og sett i verk. Han var frå Arimatea, ein by i Judea, og han venta på at Guds rike skulle koma. 52 Han gjekk til Pilatus og bad om å få Jesu kropp. 53 Og Josef tok ned Jesu kropp, sveipte han i eit linklede og la han i ei grav som var hoggen ut i bergveggen, og som det endå ikkje hadde lege nokon i.

54 t Det var førebuingsdagen, rett før sabbaten tok til.
55  t Dei kvinnene som hadde vore med han frå Galilea, følgde etter. Dei såg grava og såg korleis Jesu kropp vart lagd der. 56 tt Sidan gjekk dei heim og gjorde i stand angande olje og salve. På sabbaten heldt dei seg i ro, som lova kravde.

LUKE 23

Pilate Questions Jesus

(Matthew 27.1,2,11-14; Mark 15.1-5; John 18.28-38)

1 Everyone in the council got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

2 They started accusing him and said, “We caught this man trying to get our people to riot and to stop paying taxes to the Emperor. He also claims that he is the Messiah, our king.”

3 Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Those are your words,” Jesus answered.

4 Pilate told the chief priests and the crowd, “I don't find him guilty of anything.”

5 But they all kept on saying, “He has been teaching and causing trouble all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has now come all the way here.”

Jesus //Is Brought before Herod

6 When Pilate heard this, he asked, “Is this man from Galilee?”

7 After Pilate learned that Jesus came from the region ruled by Herod, t he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.

8 For a long time Herod had wanted to see Jesus and was very happy because he finally had this chance. He had heard many things about Jesus and hoped to see him work a miracle.
9 Herod asked him a lot of questions, but Jesus did not answer.

10 Then the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses stood up and accused him of all kinds of bad things.
11 Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and insulted him. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends, even though they had been enemies before this.

The Death Sentence

(Matthew 27.15-26; Mark 15.6-15; John 18.39—19.16)

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people. 14 He told them, “You brought Jesus to me and said he was a troublemaker. But I have questioned him here in front of you, and I have not found him guilty of anything that you say he has done. 15 Herod didn't find him guilty either and sent him back. This man doesn't deserve to be put to death!

16-17 I will just have him beaten with a whip and set free.”t
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!”

19 Now Barabbas was in jail because he had started a riot in the city and had murdered someone.
20 Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he spoke again to the crowds.

21 But they kept shouting, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!”

22 Pilate spoke to them a third time, “But what crime has he done? I have not found him guilty of anything for which he should be put to death. I will have him beaten with a whip and set free.”
23 The people kept on shouting as loud as they could for Jesus to be put to death. 24 Finally, Pilate gave in.

25 He freed the man who was in jail for rioting and murder, because he was the one the crowd wanted to be set free. Then Pilate handed Jesus over for them to do what they wanted with him.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

(Matthew 27.31-44; Mark 15.21-32; John 19.17-27)

26 As Jesus was being led away, some soldiers grabbed hold of a man named Simon who was from Cyrene. He was coming in from the fields, but they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 A large crowd was following Jesus, and in the crowd a lot of women were crying and weeping for him.

28 Jesus turned to the women and said:
Women of Jerusalem, don't cry for me! Cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 Someday people will say, “Women who never had children are really fortunate!” 30 t At that time everyone will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” They will say to the hills, “Hide us!”

31 If this can happen when the wood is green, what do you think will happen when it is dry?t
32 Two criminals were led out to be put to death with Jesus.

33 When the soldiers came to the place called “The Skull,”t they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus.

34-35  t Jesus said, “Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing.”t
While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, “He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!”
36  t The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine.

37 They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

38 Above him was a sign that said, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!”
40 But the other criminal told the first one off, “Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong.”

42 Then he said to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into power!”

43 Jesus replied, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.”t

The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; John 19.28-30)

44 Around noon the sky turned dark and stayed that way until the middle of the afternoon. 45 t The sun stopped shining, and the curtain in the templet split down the middle.

46 t Jesus shouted, “Father, I put myself in your hands!” Then he died.

47 When the Roman officer saw what had happened, he praised God and said, “Jesus must really have been a good man!”
48 A crowd had gathered to see the terrible sight. Then after they had seen it, they felt brokenhearted and went home.

49 t All of Jesus' close friends and the women who had come with him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched.

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; John 19.38-42)

50-51 There was a man named Joseph, who was from Arimathea in Judea. Joseph was a good and honest man, and he was eager for God's kingdom to come. He was also a member of the council, but he did not agree with what they had decided.
52 Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. 53 He took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in fine cloth. Then he put it in a tomb that had been cut out of solid rock and had never been used.

54 It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin.t
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and watched how Jesus' body was placed in the tomb. 56 t Then they went to prepare some sweet-smelling spices for his burial. But on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands.
