Luca 23

Gesù davanti a Pilato

1 Poi tutta l'assemblea si alzò e lo condussero da Pilato.
2 E cominciarono ad accusarlo, dicendo: «Abbiamo trovato quest'uomo che sovvertiva la nostra nazione, vietava di pagare i tributi a Cesare e diceva di essere lui il Cristo re».

3 Pilato lo interrogò, dicendo: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?» E Gesù gli rispose: «Tu lo dici».
4 Pilato disse ai capi dei sacerdoti e alla folla: «Non trovo nessuna colpa in quest'uomo».

5 Ma essi insistevano, dicendo: «Egli sobilla il popolo insegnando per tutta la Giudea; ha cominciato dalla Galilea ed è giunto fin qui».

Pilato manda Gesù da Erode

6 Quando Pilato udì questo, domandò se quell'uomo fosse Galileo.

7 Saputo che egli era della giurisdizione di Erode, lo mandò da Erode, che si trovava anch'egli a Gerusalemme in quei giorni.
8 Quando vide Gesù, Erode se ne rallegrò molto, perché da lungo tempo desiderava vederlo, avendo sentito parlare di lui; e sperava di vedergli fare qualche segno miracoloso.9 Gli rivolse molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla.10 Or i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi stavano là, accusandolo con veemenza.11 Erode, con i suoi soldati, dopo averlo vilipeso e schernito, lo vestì di un manto splendido e lo rimandò da Pilato.

12 Inquel giorno, Erode e Pilato divennero amici; prima infatti c'era stata inimicizia tra loro.

Gesù o Barabba?

13 Pilato, riuniti i capi dei sacerdoti, i magistrati e il popolo, disse loro:14 «Mi avete condotto quest'uomo come sobillatore del popolo; ed ecco, dopo averlo esaminato in presenza vostra, non ho trovato in lui nessuna delle colpe di cui lo accusate,15 e neppure Erode, poiché egli lo ha rimandato da noi. Ecco, egli non ha fatto nulla che sia degno di morte.

16 Perciò, dopo averlo castigato, lo libererò».
17 [Ora egli aveva l'obbligo di liberare loro un carcerato in occasione della festa;]18 ma essi gridarono tutti insieme: «Fa' morire costui e liberaci Barabba!»19 Barabba era stato messo in prigione a motivo di una sommossa avvenuta in città e di un omicidio.20 E Pilato parlò loro di nuovo perché desiderava liberare Gesù;21 ma essi gridavano: «Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo!»22 Per la terza volta egli disse loro: «Ma che male ha fatto? Io non ho trovato nulla in lui, che meriti la morte. Perciò, dopo averlo castigato, lo libererò».23 Ma essi insistevano a gran voce, chiedendo che fosse crocifisso; e le loro grida finirono per avere il sopravvento.24 Pilato decise che fosse fatto quello che domandavano:

25 liberò colui che era stato messo in prigione per sommossa e omicidio, e che essi avevano richiesto, ma abbandonò Gesù alla loro volontà.

In cammino verso il Golgota

26 Mentre lo portavano via, presero un certo Simone, di Cirene, che veniva dalla campagna, e gli misero addosso la croce perché la portasse dietro a Gesù.
27 Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che facevano cordoglio e lamento per lui.28 Ma Gesù, voltatosi verso di loro, disse: «Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete per me, ma piangete per voi stesse e per i vostri figli.29 Perché, ecco, i giorni vengono nei quali si dirà: "Beate le sterili, i grembi che non hanno partorito e le mammelle che non hanno allattato".30 Allora cominceranno adire ai monti: "Cadeteci addosso!" e ai colli: "Copriteci!" t.

31 Perché se fanno questo al legno verde, che cosa sarà fatto al secco?»

32 Ora altri due, malfattori, erano condotti per essere messi a morte insieme a lui.

La crocifissione di Gesù

33 Quando furono giunti al luogo detto «il Teschio t», vi crocifissero lui e i malfattori, uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra.

34 {Gesù diceva: «Padre, perdona loro, perché non sanno quello che fanno».}Poi divisero le sue vesti, tirandole a sorte t.
35 Il popolo stava a guardare. E anche i magistrati si beffavano di lui, dicendo: «Ha salvato altri, salvi se stesso, se è il Cristo, l'Eletto di Dio!»36 Pure i soldati lo schernirono, accostandosi, presentandogli dell'aceto e dicendo:

37 «Se tu sei il re dei Giudei, salva te stesso!»

38 Vi era anche questa iscrizione sopra il suo capo: «Questo è il re dei Giudei».
39 Uno dei malfattori appesi lo insultava, dicendo: «Non sei tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e noi!»40 Ma l'altro lo rimproverava, dicendo: «Non hai nemmeno timor di Dio, tu che ti trovi nel medesimo supplizio?41 Per noi è giusto, perché riceviamo la pena che ci meritiamo per le nostre azioni, ma questi non ha fatto nulla di male».42 E diceva: «Gesù, ricòrdati di me quando entrerai nel tuo regno!»

43 Ed egli gli disse: «Io ti dico in verità, oggi tu sarai con me in paradiso».

Morte di Gesù

44 Era circa l'ora sesta, e si fecero tenebre su tutto il paese fino all'ora nona t;

45 il sole si oscurò e la cortina del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo.

46 E Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: «Padre,nelle tue mani rimetto lo spirito mio t». Detto questo, spirò.

47 Il centurione, veduto ciò che era accaduto, glorificava Dio, dicendo: «Veramente quest'uomo era giusto».
48 E tutta la folla che assisteva a questo spettacolo, vedute le cose che erano accadute, se ne tornava battendosi il petto.

49 Ma tutti i suoi conoscenti e le donne che lo avevano accompagnato dalla Galilea stavano a guardare queste cose da lontano.

Il seppellimento di Gesù

50 C'era un uomo, di nome Giuseppe, che era membro del Consiglio, uomo giusto e buono,51 il quale non aveva acconsentito alla deliberazione e all'operato degli altri. Egli era di Arimatea, città della Giudea, e aspettava il regno di Dio.52 Si presentò a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.53 E, trattolo giù dalla croce, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo e lo mise in una tomba scavata nella roccia, dove nessuno era ancora stato deposto.

54 Era il giorno della Preparazione e stava per cominciare il sabato.
55 Le donne che erano venute con Gesù dalla Galilea, seguito Giuseppe, guardarono la tomba, e come vi era stato deposto il corpo di Gesù.

56 Poi tornarono indietro e prepararono aromi e profumi. Durante il sabato si riposarono, secondo il comandamento.

LUKE 23

Pilate Questions Jesus

(Matthew 27.1,2,11-14; Mark 15.1-5; John 18.28-38)

1 Everyone in the council got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

2 They started accusing him and said, “We caught this man trying to get our people to riot and to stop paying taxes to the Emperor. He also claims that he is the Messiah, our king.”

3 Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Those are your words,” Jesus answered.

4 Pilate told the chief priests and the crowd, “I don't find him guilty of anything.”

5 But they all kept on saying, “He has been teaching and causing trouble all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has now come all the way here.”

Jesus //Is Brought before Herod

7 After Pilate learned that Jesus came from the region ruled by Herod, t he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.

8 For a long time Herod had wanted to see Jesus and was very happy because he finally had this chance. He had heard many things about Jesus and hoped to see him work a miracle.
9 Herod asked him a lot of questions, but Jesus did not answer.

10 Then the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses stood up and accused him of all kinds of bad things.
11 Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and insulted him. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends, even though they had been enemies before this.

The Death Sentence

(Matthew 27.15-26; Mark 15.6-15; John 18.39—19.16)

16-17 I will just have him beaten with a whip and set free.”t
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!”

19 Now Barabbas was in jail because he had started a riot in the city and had murdered someone.
20 Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he spoke again to the crowds.

21 But they kept shouting, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!”

22 Pilate spoke to them a third time, “But what crime has he done? I have not found him guilty of anything for which he should be put to death. I will have him beaten with a whip and set free.”
23 The people kept on shouting as loud as they could for Jesus to be put to death. 24 Finally, Pilate gave in.

25 He freed the man who was in jail for rioting and murder, because he was the one the crowd wanted to be set free. Then Pilate handed Jesus over for them to do what they wanted with him.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

(Matthew 27.31-44; Mark 15.21-32; John 19.17-27)

26 As Jesus was being led away, some soldiers grabbed hold of a man named Simon who was from Cyrene. He was coming in from the fields, but they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 A large crowd was following Jesus, and in the crowd a lot of women were crying and weeping for him.

28 Jesus turned to the women and said:
Women of Jerusalem, don't cry for me! Cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 Someday people will say, “Women who never had children are really fortunate!” 30 t At that time everyone will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” They will say to the hills, “Hide us!”

31 If this can happen when the wood is green, what do you think will happen when it is dry?t
32 Two criminals were led out to be put to death with Jesus.

33 When the soldiers came to the place called “The Skull,”t they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus.

34-35  t Jesus said, “Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing.”t
While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, “He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!”
36  t The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine.

37 They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

38 Above him was a sign that said, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!”
40 But the other criminal told the first one off, “Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong.”

42 Then he said to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into power!”

43 Jesus replied, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.”t

The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; John 19.28-30)

46 t Jesus shouted, “Father, I put myself in your hands!” Then he died.

47 When the Roman officer saw what had happened, he praised God and said, “Jesus must really have been a good man!”
48 A crowd had gathered to see the terrible sight. Then after they had seen it, they felt brokenhearted and went home.

49 t All of Jesus' close friends and the women who had come with him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched.

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; John 19.38-42)

50-51 There was a man named Joseph, who was from Arimathea in Judea. Joseph was a good and honest man, and he was eager for God's kingdom to come. He was also a member of the council, but he did not agree with what they had decided.
52 Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. 53 He took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in fine cloth. Then he put it in a tomb that had been cut out of solid rock and had never been used.

54 It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin.t
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and watched how Jesus' body was placed in the tomb. 56 t Then they went to prepare some sweet-smelling spices for his burial. But on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands.
