Lucas 23

Juicio de Jesús ante Pilato

1  Entonces todo el Concilio llevó a Jesús ante Pilato, el gobernador romano. 2 Comenzaron a presentar su caso: «Este hombre ha estado llevando al pueblo por mal camino al decirles que no paguen los impuestos al gobierno romano y al afirmar que él es el Mesías, un rey».

3 Entonces Pilato le preguntó:
—¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?
Jesús contestó:
—Tú lo has dicho.

4 Pilato se dirigió a los principales sacerdotes y a la multitud y les dijo:
—¡No encuentro ningún delito en este hombre!

5 Pero insistían:
—Con sus enseñanzas causa disturbios por donde va, en toda Judea, desde Galilea hasta Jerusalén.

6 —Ah, ¿es galileo? —preguntó Pilato.

7 Cuando le dijeron que sí, Pilato lo mandó a Herodes Antipas, porque Galilea estaba bajo la jurisdicción de Herodes, y dio la casualidad de que se encontraba en Jerusalén en ese momento.

8 Herodes se alegró mucho por la oportunidad de ver a Jesús, porque había oído hablar de él y hacía tiempo que quería verlo realizar un milagro. 9 Herodes le hizo una pregunta tras otra, pero Jesús se negó a contestar. 10 Mientras tanto, los principales sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley religiosa se quedaron allí gritando sus acusaciones. 11 Entonces Herodes y sus soldados comenzaron a burlarse de Jesús y a ridiculizarlo. Finalmente le pusieron un manto real y lo enviaron de regreso a Pilato. 12 (Herodes y Pilato, quienes habían sido enemigos anteriormente, ese día se hicieron amigos).

13 Entonces Pilato llamó a los principales sacerdotes y a los otros líderes religiosos, junto con el pueblo, 14 y anunció su veredicto: «Me trajeron a este hombre porque lo acusan de encabezar una revuelta. Detenidamente lo he examinado al respecto en presencia de ustedes y lo encuentro inocente. 15 Herodes llegó a la misma conclusión y me lo devolvió. Este hombre no ha hecho nada que merezca la pena de muerte. 16 Así que lo haré azotar y luego lo pondré en libertad»t.

18 Pero un gran clamor surgió de la multitud, y a una voz la gente gritó: «¡Mátalo y suéltanos a Barrabás!». 19 (Barrabás estaba en prisión por haber participado en un levantamiento contra el gobierno en Jerusalén, y por asesinato). 20 Pilato discutió con ellos porque quería poner en libertad a Jesús, 21 pero la multitud seguía gritando: «¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifícalo!».

22 Por tercera vez insistió Pilato: «¿Por qué? ¿Qué crimen ha cometido? No encuentro ninguna razón para condenarlo a muerte. Lo haré azotar y luego lo soltaré».

23 Pero la turba gritó cada vez más fuerte, exigiendo que Jesús fuera crucificado, y sus voces prevalecieron. 24 Entonces Pilato sentenció a Jesús a muerte como la gente reclamaba. 25 Como habían pedido, puso en libertad a Barrabás, el que estaba preso por levantamiento y asesinato. Y les entregó a Jesús para que hicieran con él como quisieran.

La crucifixión

26 Cuando ellos se llevaban a Jesús, sucedió que un hombre llamado Simón, que era de Cirene,t venía del campo. Los soldados lo agarraron, pusieron la cruz sobre él y lo obligaron a cargarla detrás de Jesús. 27 Una gran multitud lo seguía, incluidas muchas mujeres que lloraban desconsoladas. 28 Entonces Jesús se dio la vuelta y les dijo: «Hijas de Jerusalén, no lloren por mí; lloren más bien por ustedes y por sus hijos. 29 Pues vienen días cuando dirán: “¡Dichosas las mujeres que no tienen hijos, los vientres que no dieron a luz y los pechos que no amamantaron!”. 30 La gente suplicará a los montes: “¡Caigan sobre nosotros!” y rogará a las colinas: “¡Entiérrennos!”t. 31 Pues, si estas cosas suceden cuando el árbol está verde, ¿qué pasará cuando esté seco?»t.

32 Llevaron a otros dos, ambos criminales, para ser ejecutados con Jesús. 33 Cuando llegaron a un lugar llamado «La Calavera»,t lo clavaron en la cruz y a los criminales también, uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda.

34 Jesús dijo: «Padre, perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen»t. Y los soldados sortearon su ropa, tirando los dados.t

35 La multitud observaba, y los líderes se burlaban. «Salvó a otros —decían—, que se salve a sí mismo si de verdad es el Mesías de Dios, el Elegido». 36 Los soldados también se burlaban de él, al ofrecerle vino agrio para beber. 37 Y exclamaron: «Si eres el rey de los judíos, ¡sálvate a ti mismo!». 38 Encima de su cabeza, colocaron un letrero que decía: «Este es el Rey de los judíos».

39 Uno de los criminales colgados junto a él se burló: «¿Así que eres el Mesías? Demuéstralo salvándote a ti mismo, ¡y a nosotros también!».

40 Pero el otro criminal protestó: «¿Ni siquiera temes a Dios ahora que estás condenado a muerte? 41 Nosotros merecemos morir por nuestros crímenes, pero este hombre no ha hecho nada malo».

42 Luego dijo:
—Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando vengas en tu reino.

43 Jesús respondió:
—Te aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso.

Muerte de Jesús

44 Ya era alrededor del mediodía, y la tierra se llenó de oscuridad hasta las tres de la tarde. 45 La luz del sol desapareció. Y, de repente, la cortina del santuario del templo se rasgó por la mitad. 46 Después Jesús gritó: «Padre, ¡encomiendo mi espíritu en tus manos!»t. Y con esas palabras dio su último suspiro.

47 Cuando el oficial romanot encargado de la ejecución vio lo que había sucedido, adoró a Dios y dijo: «Este hombre era inocentet de verdad». 48 Y cuando todas las multitudes que habían venido a observar la ejecución vieron lo que había sucedido, regresaron a casa con gran dolor;t 49 pero los amigos de Jesús, incluidas las mujeres que lo habían seguido desde Galilea, se quedaron mirando de lejos.

Entierro de Jesús

50 Había un hombre bueno y justo llamado José. Era miembro del Concilio Supremo judío, 51 pero no había estado de acuerdo con la decisión y las acciones de los otros líderes religiosos. Era de la ciudad de Judea llamada Arimatea y esperaba la venida del reino de Dios. 52 Fue a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. 53 Luego bajó el cuerpo de la cruz, lo envolvió en un largo lienzo de lino y lo colocó en una tumba nueva que había sido tallada en la roca. 54 Esto sucedió el viernes por la tarde, el día de preparación,t cuando el día de descanso estaba por comenzar.

55 Mientras llevaban el cuerpo, las mujeres de Galilea iban detrás y vieron la tumba donde lo colocaron. 56 Luego fueron a sus casas y prepararon especias y ungüentos para ungir el cuerpo de Jesús; pero cuando terminaron ya había comenzado el día de descanso, así que descansaron como ordena la ley.

LUKE 23

Pilate Questions Jesus

(Matthew 27.1,2,11-14; Mark 15.1-5; John 18.28-38)

1 Everyone in the council got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

2 They started accusing him and said, “We caught this man trying to get our people to riot and to stop paying taxes to the Emperor. He also claims that he is the Messiah, our king.”

3 Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Those are your words,” Jesus answered.

4 Pilate told the chief priests and the crowd, “I don't find him guilty of anything.”

5 But they all kept on saying, “He has been teaching and causing trouble all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has now come all the way here.”

Jesus //Is Brought before Herod

7 After Pilate learned that Jesus came from the region ruled by Herod, t he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.

8 For a long time Herod had wanted to see Jesus and was very happy because he finally had this chance. He had heard many things about Jesus and hoped to see him work a miracle.
9 Herod asked him a lot of questions, but Jesus did not answer.

10 Then the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses stood up and accused him of all kinds of bad things.
11 Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and insulted him. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends, even though they had been enemies before this.

The Death Sentence

(Matthew 27.15-26; Mark 15.6-15; John 18.39—19.16)

16-17 I will just have him beaten with a whip and set free.”t
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!”

19 Now Barabbas was in jail because he had started a riot in the city and had murdered someone.
20 Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he spoke again to the crowds.

21 But they kept shouting, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!”

22 Pilate spoke to them a third time, “But what crime has he done? I have not found him guilty of anything for which he should be put to death. I will have him beaten with a whip and set free.”
23 The people kept on shouting as loud as they could for Jesus to be put to death. 24 Finally, Pilate gave in.

25 He freed the man who was in jail for rioting and murder, because he was the one the crowd wanted to be set free. Then Pilate handed Jesus over for them to do what they wanted with him.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

(Matthew 27.31-44; Mark 15.21-32; John 19.17-27)

26 As Jesus was being led away, some soldiers grabbed hold of a man named Simon who was from Cyrene. He was coming in from the fields, but they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 A large crowd was following Jesus, and in the crowd a lot of women were crying and weeping for him.

28 Jesus turned to the women and said:
Women of Jerusalem, don't cry for me! Cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 Someday people will say, “Women who never had children are really fortunate!” 30 t At that time everyone will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” They will say to the hills, “Hide us!”

31 If this can happen when the wood is green, what do you think will happen when it is dry?t
32 Two criminals were led out to be put to death with Jesus.

33 When the soldiers came to the place called “The Skull,”t they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus.

34-35  t Jesus said, “Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing.”t
While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, “He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!”
36  t The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine.

37 They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

38 Above him was a sign that said, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!”
40 But the other criminal told the first one off, “Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong.”

42 Then he said to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into power!”

43 Jesus replied, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.”t

The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; John 19.28-30)

46 t Jesus shouted, “Father, I put myself in your hands!” Then he died.

47 When the Roman officer saw what had happened, he praised God and said, “Jesus must really have been a good man!”
48 A crowd had gathered to see the terrible sight. Then after they had seen it, they felt brokenhearted and went home.

49 t All of Jesus' close friends and the women who had come with him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched.

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; John 19.38-42)

50-51 There was a man named Joseph, who was from Arimathea in Judea. Joseph was a good and honest man, and he was eager for God's kingdom to come. He was also a member of the council, but he did not agree with what they had decided.
52 Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. 53 He took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in fine cloth. Then he put it in a tomb that had been cut out of solid rock and had never been used.

54 It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin.t
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and watched how Jesus' body was placed in the tomb. 56 t Then they went to prepare some sweet-smelling spices for his burial. But on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands.
