EVANGELO SECONDO S. LUCA 23

1 Poi, levatasi tutta l'assemblea, lo menarono a Pilato. 2 E cominciarono ad accusarlo, dicendo: Abbiam trovato costui che sovvertiva la nostra nazione e che vietava di pagare i tributi a Cesare, e diceva d'esser lui il Cristo re. 3 E Pilato lo interrogò, dicendo: Sei tu il re dei Giudei? Ed egli, rispondendo, gli disse: Sì, lo sono. 4 E Pilato disse ai capi sacerdoti e alle turbe: Io non trovo colpa alcuna in quest'uomo. 5 Ma essi insistevano, dicendo: Egli solleva il popolo insegnando per tutta la Giudea; ha cominciato dalla Galilea ed è giunto fin qui. 6 Quando Pilato udì questo, domandò se quell'uomo fosse Galileo. 7 E saputo ch'egli era della giurisdizione d'Erode, lo rimandò a Erode ch'era anch'egli a Gerusalemme in que' giorni. 8 Erode, come vide Gesù, se ne rallegrò grandemente, perché da lungo tempo desiderava vederlo, avendo sentito parlar di lui; e sperava di vedergli fare qualche miracolo. 9 E gli rivolse molte domande, ma Gesù non gli rispose nulla. 10 Or i capi sacerdoti e gli scribi stavan là, accusandolo con veemenza. 11 Ed Erode co' suoi soldati, dopo averlo vilipeso e schernito, lo vestì di un manto splendido, e lo rimandò a Pilato. 12 E in quel giorno, Erode e Pilato divennero amici, perché per l'addietro arano stati in inimicizia fra loro. 13 E Pilato, chiamati assieme i capi sacerdoti e i magistrati e il popolo, disse loro: 14 Voi mi avete fatto comparir dinanzi quest'uomo come sovvertitore del popolo; ed ecco, dopo averlo in presenza vostra esaminato, non ho trovato in lui alcuna delle colpe di cui l'accusate; 15 e neppure Erode, poiché egli l'ha rimandato a noi; ed ecco, egli non ha fatto nulla che sia degno di morte. 16 Io dunque, dopo averlo castigato, lo libererò. 17 [Or egli era in obbligo di liberar loro un carcerato in occasion della festa.] 18 Ma essi gridarono tutti insieme: Fa' morir costui, e liberaci Barabba! 19 (Barabba era stato messo in prigione a motivo di una sedizione avvenuta in città e di un omicidio). 20 E Pilato da capo parlò loro, desiderando liberar Gesù; 21 ma essi gridavano: Crocifiggilo, crocifiggilo! 22 E per la terza volta egli disse loro: Ma che male ha egli fatto? Io non ho trovato nulla in lui, che meriti la morte. Io dunque, dopo averlo castigato, lo libererò. 23 Ma essi insistevano con gran grida, chiedendo che fosse crocifisso; e le loro grida finirono con avere il sopravvento. 24 E Pilato sentenziò che fosse fatto quello che domandavano. 25 E liberò colui che era stato messo in prigione per sedizione ed omicidio, e che essi aveano richiesto; ma abbandonò Gesù alla loro volontà. 26 E mentre lo menavan via, presero un certo Simon, cireneo, che veniva dalla campagna, e gli misero addosso la croce, perché la portasse dietro a Gesù. 27 Or lo seguiva una gran moltitudine di popolo e di donne che facean cordoglio e lamento per lui. 28 Ma Gesù, voltatosi verso di loro, disse: Figliuole di Gerusalemme, non piangete per me, ma piangete per voi stesse e per i vostri figliuoli. 29 Perché ecco, vengono i giorni nei quali si dirà: Beate le sterili, e i seni che non han partorito, e le mammelle che non hanno allattato. 30 Allora prenderanno a dire ai monti: Cadeteci addosso; ed ai colli: Copriteci. 31 Poiché se fan queste cose al legno verde, che sarà egli fatto al secco? 32 Or due altri, due malfattori, eran menati con lui per esser fatti morire. 33 E quando furon giunti al luogo detto ‘il Teschio’, crocifissero quivi lui e i malfattori, l'uno a destra e l'altro a sinistra. 34 E Gesù diceva: Padre, perdona loro, perché non sanno quello che fanno. Poi, fatte delle parti delle sue vesti, trassero a sorte. 35 E il popolo stava a guardare. E anche i magistrati si facean beffe di lui, dicendo: Ha salvato altri, salvi se stesso, se è il Cristo, l'Eletto di Dio! 36 E i soldati pure lo schernivano, accostandosi, presentandogli dell'aceto e dicendo: 37 Se tu sei il re de' Giudei, salva te stesso! 38 E v'era anche questa iscrizione sopra il suo capo: QUESTO E IL RE DEI GIUDEI. 39 E uno de' malfattori appesi lo ingiuriava, dicendo: Non se' tu il Cristo? Salva te stesso e noi! 40 Ma l'altro, rispondendo, lo sgridava e diceva: Non hai tu nemmeno timor di Dio, tu che ti trovi nel medesimo supplizio? 41 E per noi è cosa giusta, perché riceviamo la condegna pena de' nostri fatti; ma questi non ha fatto nulla di male. 42 E diceva: Gesù, ricordati di me quando sarai venuto nel tuo regno! 43 E Gesù gli disse: Io ti dico in verità che oggi tu sarai meco in paradiso. 44 Ora era circa l'ora sesta, e si fecero tenebre per tutto il paese, fino all'ora nona, essendosi oscurato il sole. 45 La cortina del tempio si squarciò pel mezzo. 46 E Gesù, gridando con gran voce, disse: Padre, nelle tue mani rimetto lo spirito mio. E detto questo spirò. 47 E il centurione, veduto ciò che era accaduto, glorificava Iddio dicendo: Veramente, quest'uomo era giusto. 48 E tutte le turbe che si erano raunate a questo spettacolo, vedute le cose che erano successe, se ne tornavano battendosi il petto. 49 Ma tutti i suoi conoscenti e le donne che lo aveano accompagnato dalla Galilea, stavano a guardare queste cose da lontano. 50 Ed ecco un uomo per nome Giuseppe, che era consigliere, uomo dabbene e giusto, 51 il quale non avea consentito alla deliberazione e all'operato degli altri, ed era da Arimatea, città de' Giudei, e aspettava il regno di Dio, 52 venne a Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù. 53 E trattolo giù di croce, lo involse in un panno lino e lo pose in una tomba scavata nella roccia, dove niuno era ancora stato posto. 54 Era il giorno della Preparazione, e stava per cominciare il sabato. 55 E le donne che eran venute con Gesù dalla Galilea, avendo seguito Giuseppe, guardarono la tomba, e come v'era stato posto il corpo di Gesù. 56 Poi, essendosene tornate, prepararono aromi ed oli odoriferi.

LUKE 23

Pilate Questions Jesus

(Matthew 27.1,2,11-14; Mark 15.1-5; John 18.28-38)

1 Everyone in the council got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

2 They started accusing him and said, “We caught this man trying to get our people to riot and to stop paying taxes to the Emperor. He also claims that he is the Messiah, our king.”

3 Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Those are your words,” Jesus answered.

4 Pilate told the chief priests and the crowd, “I don't find him guilty of anything.”

5 But they all kept on saying, “He has been teaching and causing trouble all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has now come all the way here.”

Jesus //Is Brought before Herod

7 After Pilate learned that Jesus came from the region ruled by Herod, t he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.

8 For a long time Herod had wanted to see Jesus and was very happy because he finally had this chance. He had heard many things about Jesus and hoped to see him work a miracle.
9 Herod asked him a lot of questions, but Jesus did not answer.

10 Then the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses stood up and accused him of all kinds of bad things.
11 Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and insulted him. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends, even though they had been enemies before this.

The Death Sentence

(Matthew 27.15-26; Mark 15.6-15; John 18.39—19.16)

16-17 I will just have him beaten with a whip and set free.”t
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!”

19 Now Barabbas was in jail because he had started a riot in the city and had murdered someone.
20 Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he spoke again to the crowds.

21 But they kept shouting, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!”

22 Pilate spoke to them a third time, “But what crime has he done? I have not found him guilty of anything for which he should be put to death. I will have him beaten with a whip and set free.”
23 The people kept on shouting as loud as they could for Jesus to be put to death. 24 Finally, Pilate gave in.

25 He freed the man who was in jail for rioting and murder, because he was the one the crowd wanted to be set free. Then Pilate handed Jesus over for them to do what they wanted with him.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

(Matthew 27.31-44; Mark 15.21-32; John 19.17-27)

26 As Jesus was being led away, some soldiers grabbed hold of a man named Simon who was from Cyrene. He was coming in from the fields, but they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 A large crowd was following Jesus, and in the crowd a lot of women were crying and weeping for him.

28 Jesus turned to the women and said:
Women of Jerusalem, don't cry for me! Cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 Someday people will say, “Women who never had children are really fortunate!” 30 t At that time everyone will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” They will say to the hills, “Hide us!”

31 If this can happen when the wood is green, what do you think will happen when it is dry?t
32 Two criminals were led out to be put to death with Jesus.

33 When the soldiers came to the place called “The Skull,”t they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus.

34-35  t Jesus said, “Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing.”t
While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, “He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!”
36  t The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine.

37 They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

38 Above him was a sign that said, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!”
40 But the other criminal told the first one off, “Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong.”

42 Then he said to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into power!”

43 Jesus replied, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.”t

The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; John 19.28-30)

46 t Jesus shouted, “Father, I put myself in your hands!” Then he died.

47 When the Roman officer saw what had happened, he praised God and said, “Jesus must really have been a good man!”
48 A crowd had gathered to see the terrible sight. Then after they had seen it, they felt brokenhearted and went home.

49 t All of Jesus' close friends and the women who had come with him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched.

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; John 19.38-42)

50-51 There was a man named Joseph, who was from Arimathea in Judea. Joseph was a good and honest man, and he was eager for God's kingdom to come. He was also a member of the council, but he did not agree with what they had decided.
52 Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. 53 He took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in fine cloth. Then he put it in a tomb that had been cut out of solid rock and had never been used.

54 It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin.t
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and watched how Jesus' body was placed in the tomb. 56 t Then they went to prepare some sweet-smelling spices for his burial. But on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands.
