Lucas 23

Jesús ante Pilato

1 Entonces todos ellos se levantaron, y llevaron a Jesús ante Pilato.2 Allí comenzaron a acusarlo. Decían: «Hemos encontrado que éste subvierte a la nación, que prohíbe pagar tributo al César, y que dice que él mismo es el Cristo, es decir, un rey.»3 Pilato le preguntó: «¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos?». Jesús le respondió: «Tú lo dices.»4 Pilato dijo entonces a los principales sacerdotes, y a la gente: «Yo no encuentro delito alguno en este hombre.»5 Pero ellos seguían insistiendo: «Éste alborota al pueblo con lo que enseña por toda Judea, desde Galilea hasta este lugar.»

Jesús ante Herodes

6 Cuando Pilato escuchó esto, preguntó si él era galileo.7 Y al saber que era de la jurisdicción de Herodes, se lo envió a éste, que en aquellos días también estaba en Jerusalén.8 Herodes se alegró mucho al ver a Jesús, pues hacía tiempo que deseaba verlo, ya que había oído hablar mucho acerca de él, y esperaba verlo hacer alguna señal.9 Pero aunque Herodes le hacía muchas preguntas, Jesús no respondía nada.10 También estaban allí los principales sacerdotes y los escribas, los cuales lo acusaban con extremado apasionamiento.11 Entonces Herodes y sus soldados lo humillaron y se burlaron de él, y lo vistieron con una ropa muy lujosa, después de lo cual Herodes lo envío de vuelta a Pilato.12 Antes de ese día, Pilato y Herodes estaban enemistados entre sí, pero ese día se hicieron amigos.

Jesús es sentenciado a muerte

13 Pilato convocó a los principales sacerdotes, y a los gobernantes y al pueblo,14 y les dijo: «Ustedes me han presentado a este hombre como a un perturbador del pueblo, pero lo he interrogado delante de ustedes, y no lo he hallado culpable de ninguno de los delitos de los que ustedes lo acusan.15 Se lo envié a Herodes, y tampoco él lo ha hallado culpable. Por tanto, este hombre no ha hecho nada que merezca la muerte.16 Voy a castigarlo, y después de eso lo dejaré libre.»17 [Y en cada fiesta él tenía que poner en libertad a un preso.]t

18 Pero toda la multitud gritaba al unísono: «¡Fuera con éste! ¡Déjanos libre a Barrabás!»19 Barrabás había sido encarcelado por un levantamiento en la ciudad, y también por homicidio.20 Como Pilato quería soltar a Jesús, volvió a dirigirse al pueblo;21 pero ellos seguían gritando: «¡Crucifícalo, crucifícalo!»22 Por tercera vez Pilato les dijo: «¿Pues qué crimen ha cometido éste? ¡Yo no he hallado en él ningún delito que merezca la muerte! Voy a castigarlo, y luego lo dejaré libre.»23 Pero ellos seguían gritando, e insistían en que Jesús fuera crucificado. Al final, prevalecieron las voces de ellos y de los principales sacerdotes.24 La sentencia de Pilato fue que se hiciera lo que ellos pedían;25 puso en libertad a quien habían pedido, que había sido encarcelado por rebelión y homicidio, y puso a Jesús a la disposición de ellos.

Crucifixión y muerte de Jesús

26 Cuando llevaban a Jesús, echaron mano de un tal Simón de Cirene, que volvía del campo, y le pusieron la cruz encima, para que la llevara detrás de Jesús.27 Detrás de Jesús iba una gran multitud del pueblo, y mujeres que lloraban y se lamentaban por él.28 Pero Jesús se volvió hacia ellas y les dijo: «Mujeres de Jerusalén, no lloren por mí, sino por ustedes mismas y por sus hijos.29 Porque vienen días en que se dirá: “Dichosas las estériles, y los vientres que no concibieron, y los pechos que no amamantaron.”30 Entonces comenzarán a pedir a los montes: “¡Caigan sobre nosotros!” Y dirán a las colinas: “¡Cúbrannos por completo!”t31 Porque, si esto hacen con el árbol verde, ¡qué no harán con el árbol seco!»

32 Con Jesús llevaban también a otros dos, que eran malhechores, para ser ejecutados.33 Cuando llegaron al lugar llamado de la Calavera, lo crucificaron allí, lo mismo que a los malhechores, uno a la derecha de Jesús y otro a su izquierda.34 [Jesús decía: «Padre, perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen.»]t Y los soldados echaron suertes para repartirse entre ellos sus vestidos.t35 Mientras el pueblo observaba, los gobernantes se burlaban de él y decían: «Ya que salvó a otros, que se salve a sí mismo, si en verdad es el Cristo, el escogido de Dios.»36 También los soldados se burlaban de él; hasta se acercaron y le ofrecieron vinagre,37 mientras decían: «Si eres el Rey de los judíos, ¡sálvate a ti mismo!»38 Había sobre él un epígrafe que en letras griegas, latinas y hebreas decía: «ÉSTE ES EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS.»

39 Uno de los malhechores que estaban allí colgados lo insultaba y le decía: «Si tú eres el Cristo, ¡sálvate a ti mismo y sálvanos a nosotros!»40 Pero el otro lo reprendió y le dijo: «¿Ni siquiera ahora, que sufres la misma condena, temes a Dios?41 Lo que nosotros ahora padecemos es justo, porque estamos recibiendo lo que merecían nuestros hechos, pero éste no cometió ningún crimen.»42 Y a Jesús le dijo: «Acuérdate de mí cuando llegues a tu reino.»43 Jesús le dijo: «De cierto te digo que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso.»

44 Desde el mediodía y hasta las tres de la tarde hubo tinieblas sobre toda la tierra.45 El sol se oscureció, y el velot del templo se rasgó por la mitad.46 En ese momento Jesús clamó a gran voz, y dijo: «Padre, en tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu.»t Y después de haber dicho esto, expiró.47 Cuando el centurión vio lo sucedido, alabó a Dios y dijo: «Realmente, este hombre era justo.»48 Al ver lo sucedido, toda la multitud que presenciaba este espectáculo se golpeaba el pecho y se fue alejando de allí.49 Pero todos los conocidos de Jesús, y las mujerest que lo habían seguido desde Galilea, seguían observando a cierta distancia lo que sucedía.

Jesús es sepultado

50 Un hombre bueno y justo, llamado José, que era miembro del tribunal,51 no había estado de acuerdo con lo que los del tribunal planearon, ni con lo que hicieron. Este José era de Arimatea, una ciudad de Judea, y también esperaba el reino de Dios,52 así que fue a ver a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús.53 Después de bajarlo de la cruz, envolvió el cuerpo en una sábana y lo puso en un sepulcro abierto en una peña, en donde aún no se había sepultado a nadie.54 Era el día de la preparación, y estaba por comenzar el día de reposo.55 Acompañaron a José las mujeres que habían venido con Jesús desde Galilea, y vieron el sepulcro y cómo fue colocado el cuerpo.56 Después regresaron a su casa para preparar especias aromáticas y ungüentos, y descansaron en el día de reposo, conforme al mandamiento.t

LUKE 23

Pilate Questions Jesus

(Matthew 27.1,2,11-14; Mark 15.1-5; John 18.28-38)

1 Everyone in the council got up and led Jesus off to Pilate.

2 They started accusing him and said, “We caught this man trying to get our people to riot and to stop paying taxes to the Emperor. He also claims that he is the Messiah, our king.”

3 Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Those are your words,” Jesus answered.

4 Pilate told the chief priests and the crowd, “I don't find him guilty of anything.”

5 But they all kept on saying, “He has been teaching and causing trouble all over Judea. He started in Galilee and has now come all the way here.”

Jesus //Is Brought before Herod

7 After Pilate learned that Jesus came from the region ruled by Herod, t he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time.

8 For a long time Herod had wanted to see Jesus and was very happy because he finally had this chance. He had heard many things about Jesus and hoped to see him work a miracle.
9 Herod asked him a lot of questions, but Jesus did not answer.

10 Then the chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses stood up and accused him of all kinds of bad things.
11 Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and insulted him. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends, even though they had been enemies before this.

The Death Sentence

(Matthew 27.15-26; Mark 15.6-15; John 18.39—19.16)

16-17 I will just have him beaten with a whip and set free.”t
18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!”

19 Now Barabbas was in jail because he had started a riot in the city and had murdered someone.
20 Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he spoke again to the crowds.

21 But they kept shouting, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!”

22 Pilate spoke to them a third time, “But what crime has he done? I have not found him guilty of anything for which he should be put to death. I will have him beaten with a whip and set free.”
23 The people kept on shouting as loud as they could for Jesus to be put to death. 24 Finally, Pilate gave in.

25 He freed the man who was in jail for rioting and murder, because he was the one the crowd wanted to be set free. Then Pilate handed Jesus over for them to do what they wanted with him.

Jesus Is Nailed to a Cross

(Matthew 27.31-44; Mark 15.21-32; John 19.17-27)

26 As Jesus was being led away, some soldiers grabbed hold of a man named Simon who was from Cyrene. He was coming in from the fields, but they put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 A large crowd was following Jesus, and in the crowd a lot of women were crying and weeping for him.

28 Jesus turned to the women and said:
Women of Jerusalem, don't cry for me! Cry for yourselves and for your children. 29 Someday people will say, “Women who never had children are really fortunate!” 30 t At that time everyone will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” They will say to the hills, “Hide us!”

31 If this can happen when the wood is green, what do you think will happen when it is dry?t
32 Two criminals were led out to be put to death with Jesus.

33 When the soldiers came to the place called “The Skull,”t they nailed Jesus to a cross. They also nailed the two criminals to crosses, one on each side of Jesus.

34-35  t Jesus said, “Father, forgive these people! They don't know what they're doing.”t
While the crowd stood there watching Jesus, the soldiers gambled for his clothes. The leaders insulted him by saying, “He saved others. Now he should save himself, if he really is God's chosen Messiah!”
36  t The soldiers made fun of Jesus and brought him some wine.

37 They said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

38 Above him was a sign that said, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals hanging there also insulted Jesus by saying, “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and save us!”
40 But the other criminal told the first one off, “Don't you fear God? Aren't you getting the same punishment as this man? 41 We got what was coming to us, but he didn't do anything wrong.”

42 Then he said to Jesus, “Remember me when you come into power!”

43 Jesus replied, “I promise that today you will be with me in paradise.”t

The Death of Jesus

(Matthew 27.45-56; Mark 15.33-41; John 19.28-30)

46 t Jesus shouted, “Father, I put myself in your hands!” Then he died.

47 When the Roman officer saw what had happened, he praised God and said, “Jesus must really have been a good man!”
48 A crowd had gathered to see the terrible sight. Then after they had seen it, they felt brokenhearted and went home.

49 t All of Jesus' close friends and the women who had come with him from Galilee stood at a distance and watched.

Jesus Is Buried

(Matthew 27.57-61; Mark 15.42-47; John 19.38-42)

50-51 There was a man named Joseph, who was from Arimathea in Judea. Joseph was a good and honest man, and he was eager for God's kingdom to come. He was also a member of the council, but he did not agree with what they had decided.
52 Joseph went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. 53 He took the body down from the cross and wrapped it in fine cloth. Then he put it in a tomb that had been cut out of solid rock and had never been used.

54 It was Friday, and the Sabbath was about to begin.t
55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and watched how Jesus' body was placed in the tomb. 56 t Then they went to prepare some sweet-smelling spices for his burial. But on the Sabbath they rested, as the Law of Moses commands.
