Luca 5

I primi discepoli.

1 Un giorno, mentre Gesù predicava sulla riva del lago di Genesaret, la folla gli si stringeva attorno per ascoltare la Parola di Dio.2 Gesù allora vide due barche vuote ferme a riva: i pescatori erano scesi e lavavano le reti.3 Montato su una delle barche, Gesù disse a Simone, il proprietario, di scostarsi un po’ dalla riva, così si sarebbe potuto sedere nella barca e da lì parlare alla folla.4 Quando ebbe finito di parlare, egli disse a Simone: « Ora vai al largo e getta le reti; vedrai quanto pesce prenderai! »5 Ma Simone rispose: « Signore, abbiamo lavorato sodo tutta la notte e non abbiamo preso niente! Ma se lo dici tu, proviamo ancora… »6 E stavolta le reti furono così piene, che cominciarono a strapparsi!7 Allora fecero cenno ai compagni dell’altra barca, perché venissero ad aiutarli; e ben presto tutte e due le barche furono talmente piene di pesce, che rischiavano di affondare!8 Quando Simon Pietro si rese conto dell’accaduto, cadde in ginocchio davanti a Gesù, dicendo: « O, Signore, per piacere allontanati da me, perché io sono troppo peccatore per starti vicino! »9-10 Pietro era rimasto sconvolto da quella pesca straordinaria e, come lui, lo erano gli altri, ed anche i suoi soci, Giacomo e Giovanni, figli di Zebedeo. Ma Gesù disse a Simone: « Non aver paura! D’ora in avanti pescherai anime di uomini! »11 E non appena sbarcarono, essi lasciarono tutto per andare con Gesù.

Gesù guarisce molti malati.

12 Un giorno, in un certo villaggio che Gesù stava visitando c’era un uomo lebbroso da molti anni. Quando il poveretto vide Gesù, si gettò ai suoi piedi, supplicandolo perché lo guarisse.
« Signore », disse, « se soltanto lo vuoi, tu puoi guarirmi del tutto! »13 Gesù lo toccò, dicendo: « Certo che lo voglio. Sii guarito! » E la lebbra sparì.14 Allora Gesù gli ordinò di allontanarsi subito, senza dir niente a nessuno e di andare a farsi vedere dal sacerdote giudeo. Poi aggiunse: « Offri il sacrificio richiesto dalla legge di Mosè per i lebbrosi che sono guariti. Ciò proverà a tutti che ora stai bene ».15 A questo punto, la notizia della sua potenza si sparse a grande velocità e moltissime persone venivano per sentirlo predicare e per essere guariti dalle malattie.16 E Gesù spesso si ritirava in luoghi deserti per pregare.17 Un giorno, mentre insegnava, si erano seduti vicino a lui alcuni capi religiosi giudei e dottori della legge, venuti da molti villaggi della Galilea, della Giudea ed anche da Gerusalemme. E la potenza del Signore era con lui per compiere guarigioni.18-19 Ed ecco che alcuni uomini vennero portando un paralitico in barella. Cercarono di farsi largo fra la folla per raggiungere Gesù, ma non ci riuscirono. Allora salirono sul tetto sopra di lui, tolsero alcune tegole e piano piano calarono la barella con l’invalido giù fra la folla, proprio davanti a Gesù.20 Vedendo la loro fede, Gesù disse a quell’uomo: « Amico, i tuoi peccati ti sono perdonati! »21 « Ma chi pensa di essere questo qui? » cominciarono a domandarsi i Farisei e i dottori della legge. « Questa è una bestemmia! Chi può perdonare i peccati all’infuori di Dio? »22 Ma Gesù che conosceva i loro pensieri disse loro: « Perché fate questi ragionamenti?23-24 Io, il Messia, ho l’autorità qui sulla terra di perdonare i peccati. Ma parlare è facile, chiunque potrebbe dire, ciò che ho detto. Vi proverò quindi la verità delle mie parole, guarendo quest’uomo ». Poi, rivolto al paralitico, comandò: « Raccogli la tua barella e vattene a casa, perché sei guarito! »25 Immediatamente, sotto gli occhi allibiti dei presenti, l’uomo si alzò, raccolse la barella e se ne andò a casa, lodando Dio.26 Tutti quanti furono presi da spavento e timore; e lodavano Dio, ripetendo: « Oggi abbiamo visto cose davvero straordinarie! »27 Più tardi, mentre Gesù passava per la strada, vide un esattore delle tasse, con la solita reputazione di truffatore, che sedeva dietro il suo banco. L’uomo si chiamava Levi. Gesù gli disse: « Vieni e diventa mio discepolo! »28 Levi balzò in piedi, lasciò tutto e andò con lui.29 Poco dopo Levi diede un pranzo a casa sua. Gesù era l’ospite d’onore. C’erano anche molti colleghi di Levi, agenti delle tasse, ed altri ospiti.

Gli esperti contestano.

30 I Farisei e i dottori della legge protestarono vivamente con i discepoli, perché Gesù partecipava a quel banchetto, spalla a spalla con i più noti peccatori.31 Gesù rispose loro: « Sono i malati che hanno bisogno del medico, non quelli in buona salute!32 Io sono venuto a chiamare quelli che si sentono peccatori, perché cambino vita, non quelli che si reputano già abbastanza buoni! »33 I Farisei e i dottori della legge protestarono anche perché i discepoli di Gesù mangiavano e bevevano, anziché digiunare. Dicevano: « I discepoli di Giovanni Battista digiunano spesso e pregano, così fanno anche i nostri discepoli. Perché i tuoi discepoli, invece, mangiano e bevono? »34 Gesù rispose: « Possibile che si metta a digiunare chi è felice? O pensate, forse, che gli invitati ad un banchetto di nozze se ne stiano a soffrir la fame, mentre festeggiano lo sposo?35 Ma verrà il momento in cui lo sposo sarà portato via da loro; allora sì che non vorranno più mangiare! »36 Poi Gesù portò questo paragone: « Nes-suno taglia un pezzo di stoffa da un vestito nuovo per rattoppare un vestito vecchio. Non solo sarebbe rovinato l’indumento nuovo, ma anche il vecchio sarebbe più brutto con una toppa nuova!37 Così pure, nessuno mette del vino nuovo in otri vecchi, perché il vino nuovo li fa scoppiare, e così si rovinerebbero gli otri ed anche il vino andrebbe perso.38 Il vino nuovo deve essere messo in otri nuovi.39 E nessuno, dopo aver bevuto del vino d’annata, ne vuol bere del nuovo. Infatti si suol dire: “Quello vecchio è migliore” ».

1 Now it came to pass, while the multitude pressed upon him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;2 and he saw two boats standing by the lake: but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets.3 And he entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the multitudes out of the boat.4 And when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.5 And Simon answered and said, Master, we toiled all night, and took nothing: but at thy word I will let down the nets.6 And when they had done this, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes; and their nets were breaking;7 and they beckoned unto their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.8 But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.9 For he was amazed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken;10 and so were also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all, and followed him.12 And it came to pass, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy: and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.13 And he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou made clean. And straightway the leprosy departed from him.14 And he charged him to tell no man: but go thy way, and show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.15 But so much the more went abroad the report concerning him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed of their infirmities.16 But he withdrew himself in the deserts, and prayed.17 And it came to pass on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who were come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.18 And behold, men bring on a bed a man that was palsied: and they sought to bring him in, and to lay him before him.19 And not finding by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his couch into the midst before Jesus.20 And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?22 But Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said unto them, Why reason ye in your hearts?23 Which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk?24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins (he said unto him that was palsied), I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thy house.25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his house, glorifying God.26 And amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God; and they were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day.27 And after these things he went forth, and beheld a publican, named Levi, sitting at the place of toll, and said unto him, Follow me.28 And he forsook all, and rose up and followed him.29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house: and there was a great multitude of publicans and of others that were sitting at meat with them.30 And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with the publicans and sinners?31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are in health have no need of a physician; but they that are sick.32 I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.33 And they said unto him, The disciples of John fast often, and make supplications; likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink.34 And Jesus said unto them, Can ye make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?35 But the days will come; and when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then will they fast in those days.36 And he spake also a parable unto them: No man rendeth a piece from a new garment and putteth it upon an old garment; else he will rend the new, and also the piece from the new will not agree with the old.37 And no man putteth new wine into old wine-skins; else the new wine will burst the skins, and itself will be spilled, and the skins will perish.38 But new wine must be put into fresh wine-skins.39 And no man having drunk old wine desireth new; for he saith, The old is good.
