Llamamiento de los primeros discípulos

1 Un día estaba Jesús a orillas del lago de Genesaret,s y la gente lo apretujaba para escuchar el mensaje de Dios. 2 Entonces vio dos barcas que los pescadores habían dejado en la playa mientras lavaban las redes. 3 Subió a una de las barcas, que pertenecía a Simón, y le pidió que la alejara un poco de la orilla. Luego se sentó, y enseñaba a la gente desde la barca.
4 Cuando acabó de hablar, le dijo a Simón:
—Lleva la barca hacia aguas más profundas, y echen allí las redes para pescar. 5 —Maestro, hemos estado trabajando duro toda la noche y no hemos pescado nada —le contestó Simón—. Pero como tú me lo mandas, echaré las redes.
6 Así lo hicieron, y recogieron una cantidad tan grande de peces que las redes se les rompían. 7 Entonces llamaron por señas a sus compañeros de la otra barca para que los ayudaran. Ellos se acercaron y llenaron tanto las dos barcas que comenzaron a hundirse.
8 Al ver esto, Simón Pedro cayó de rodillas delante de Jesús y le dijo:
—¡Apártate de mí, Señor; soy un pecador! 9 Es que él y todos sus compañeros estaban asombrados ante la pesca que habían hecho, 10 como también lo estaban *Jacobo y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo, que eran socios de Simón.
—No temas; desde ahora serás pescador de hombres —le dijo Jesús a Simón. 11 Así que llevaron las barcas a tierra y, dejándolo todo, siguieron a Jesús.

Jesús sana a un leproso

12 En otra ocasión, cuando Jesús estaba en un pueblo, se presentó un hombre cubierto de *lepra. Al ver a Jesús, cayó rostro en tierra y le suplicó:
—Señor, si quieres, puedes *limpiarme. 13 Jesús extendió la mano y tocó al hombre.
—Sí quiero —le dijo—. ¡Queda limpio! Y al instante se le quitó la lepra. 14 —No se lo digas a nadie —le ordenó Jesús—; sólo ve, preséntate al sacerdote y lleva por tu *purificación lo que ordenó Moisés, para que sirva de testimonio.
15 Sin embargo, la fama de Jesús se extendía cada vez más, de modo que acudían a él multitudes para oírlo y para que los sanara de sus enfermedades. 16 Él, por su parte, solía retirarse a lugares solitarios para orar.

Jesús sana a un paralítico

17 Un día, mientras enseñaba, estaban sentados allí algunos *fariseos y *maestros de la ley que habían venido de todas las aldeas de Galilea y Judea, y también de Jerusalén. Y el poder del Señor estaba con él para sanar a los enfermos. 18 Entonces llegaron unos hombres que llevaban en una camilla a un paralítico. Procuraron entrar para ponerlo delante de Jesús, 19 pero no pudieron a causa de la multitud. Así que subieron a la azotea y, separando las tejas, lo bajaron en la camilla hasta ponerlo en medio de la gente, frente a Jesús.
20 Al ver la fe de ellos, Jesús dijo:
—Amigo, tus pecados quedan perdonados. 21 Los fariseos y los maestros de la ley comenzaron a pensar: «¿Quién es éste que dice *blasfemias? ¿Quién puede perdonar pecados sino sólo Dios?»
22 Pero Jesús supo lo que estaban pensando y les dijo:
—¿Por qué razonan así? 23 ¿Qué es más fácil decir: “Tus pecados quedan perdonados”, o “Levántate y anda”? 24 Pues para que sepan que el Hijo del hombre tiene autoridad en la tierra para perdonar pecados —se dirigió entonces al paralítico—: A ti te digo, levántate, toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa.
25 Al instante se levantó a la vista de todos, tomó la camilla en que había estado acostado, y se fue a su casa alabando a Dios. 26 Todos quedaron asombrados y ellos también alababan a Dios. Estaban llenos de temor y decían: «Hoy hemos visto maravillas.»

Llamamiento de Leví

27 Después de esto salió Jesús y se fijó en un *recaudador de impuestos llamado Leví, sentado a la mesa donde cobraba.
—Sígueme —le dijo Jesús. 28 Y Leví se levantó, lo dejó todo y lo siguió.
29 Luego Leví le ofreció a Jesús un gran banquete en su casa, y había allí un grupo numeroso de recaudadores de impuestos y otras personas que estaban comiendo con ellos. 30 Pero los *fariseos y los *maestros de la ley que eran de la misma secta les reclamaban a los discípulos de Jesús:
—¿Por qué comen y beben ustedes con recaudadores de impuestos y *pecadores? 31 —No son los sanos los que necesitan médico sino los enfermos —les contestó Jesús—. 32 No he venido a llamar a justos sino a pecadores para que se *arrepientan.

Le preguntan a Jesús sobre el ayuno

33 Algunos dijeron a Jesús:
—Los discípulos de Juan ayunan y oran con frecuencia, lo mismo que los discípulos de los *fariseos, pero los tuyos se la pasan comiendo y bebiendo. 34 Jesús les replicó:
—¿Acaso pueden obligar a los invitados del novio a que ayunen mientras él está con ellos? 35 Llegará el día en que se les quitará el novio; en aquellos días sí ayunarán.
36 Les contó esta parábola:
—Nadie quita un retazo de un vestido nuevo para remendar un vestido viejo. De hacerlo así, habrá rasgado el vestido nuevo, y el retazo nuevo no hará juego con el vestido viejo. 37 Ni echa nadie vino nuevo en odres viejos. De hacerlo así, el vino nuevo hará reventar los odres, se derramará el vino y los odres se arruinarán. 38 Más bien, el vino nuevo debe echarse en odres nuevos. 39 Y nadie que haya bebido vino añejo quiere el nuevo, porque dice: “El añejo es mejor.”

Jesus Chooses His First Disciples

(Matthew 4.18-22; Mark 1.16-20)

1  t Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, t teaching the people as they crowded around him to hear God's message. 2 Near the shore he saw two boats left there by some fishermen who had gone to wash their nets.

3 Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Simon and asked him to row it out a little way from the shore. Then Jesus sat downt in the boat to teach the crowd.

4 When Jesus had finished speaking, he told Simon, “Row the boat out into the deep water and let your nets down to catch some fish.”
5  t “Master,” Simon answered, “we have worked hard all night long and have not caught a thing. But if you tell me to, I will let the nets down.” 6 t They did this and caught so many fish that their nets began ripping apart.

7 Then they signaled for their partners in the other boat to come and help them. The men came, and together they filled the two boats so full that they both began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this happen, he knelt down in front of Jesus and said, “Lord, don't come near me! I am a sinner.” 9 Peter and everyone with him were completely surprised at all the fish they had caught.

10 His partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were surprised too.
Jesus told Simon, “Don't be afraid! From now on you will bring in people instead of fish.”

11 The men pulled their boats up on the shore. Then they left everything and went with Jesus.

Jesus Heals a Man

(Matthew 8.1-4; Mark 1.40-45)

12 Jesus came to a town where there was a man who had leprosy.t When the man saw Jesus, he knelt down to the ground in front of Jesus and begged, “Lord, you have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”
13 Jesus put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” At once the man's leprosy disappeared.

14 t Jesus told him, “Don't tell anyone about this, but go and show yourself to the priest. Offer a gift to the priest, just as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”t
15 News about Jesus kept spreading. Large crowds came to listen to him teach and to be healed of their diseases.

16 But Jesus would often go to some place where he could be alone and pray.

Jesus Heals a Man //Who Could Not Walk

(Matthew 9.1-8; Mark 2.1-12)

17 One day some Pharisees and experts in the Law of Moses sat listening to Jesus teach. They had come from every village in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem.
God had given Jesus the power to heal the sick, 18 and some people came carrying a man on a mat because he could not walk. They tried to take him inside the house and put him in front of Jesus.

19 But because of the crowd, they could not get him to Jesus. So they went up on the roof, t where they removed some tiles and let the mat down in the middle of the room.

20 When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “My friend, your sins are forgiven.”

21 The Pharisees and the experts began arguing, “Jesus must think he is God! Only God can forgive sins.”
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said, “Why are you thinking this? 23 Is it easier for me to tell this man that his sins are forgiven or to tell him to get up and walk?

24 But now you will see that the Son of Man has the right to forgive sins here on earth.” Jesus then said to the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk home.”
25 At once the man stood up in front of everyone. He picked up his mat and went home, giving thanks to God.

26 Everyone was amazed and praised God. What they saw surprised them, and they said, “We have seen a great miracle today!”

Jesus Chooses Levi

(Matthew 9.9-13; Mark 2.13-17)

28 Levi left everything and went with Jesus.

29 In his home Levi gave a big dinner for Jesus. Many tax collectors and other guests were also there.

30  t The Pharisees and some of their teachers of the Law of Moses grumbled to Jesus' disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with these tax collectors and other sinners?”
31 Jesus answered, “Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do.

32 I didn't come to invite good people to turn to God. I came to invite sinners.”

(Matthew 9.14-17; Mark 2.18-22)

33 Some people said to Jesus, “John's followers often pray and go without eating, t and so do the followers of the Pharisees. But your disciples never go without eating or drinking.”
34 Jesus told them, “The friends of a bridegroom don't go without eating while he is still with them.

35 But the time will come when he will be taken from them. Then they will go without eating.”

36 Jesus then told them these sayings:
No one uses a new piece of cloth to patch old clothes. The patch would shrink and make the hole even bigger.
37 No one pours new wine into old wineskins. The new wine would swell and burst the old skins.t Then the wine would be lost, and the skins would be ruined.

38 New wine must be put only into new wineskins.
39 No one wants new wine after drinking old wine. They say, “The old wine is better.”
