1 Or avvenne che essendogli la moltitudine addosso per udir la parola di Dio, e stando egli in piè sulla riva del lago di Gennesaret, 2 vide due barche ferme a riva, dalle quali erano smontati i pescatori e lavavano le reti. 3 E montato in una di quelle barche che era di Simone, lo pregò di scostarsi un po' da terra; poi, sedutosi, d'in sulla barca ammaestrava le turbe. 4 E com'ebbe cessato di parlare, disse a Simone: Prendi il largo, e calate le reti per pescare. 5 E Simone, rispondendo, disse: Maestro, tutta la notte ci siamo affaticati, e non abbiam preso nulla; però, alla tua parola, calerò le reti. 6 E fatto così, presero una tal quantità di pesci, che le reti si rompevano. 7 E fecero segno a' loro compagni dell'altra barca, di venire ad aiutarli. E quelli vennero, e riempirono ambedue le barche, talché affondavano. 8 Simon Pietro, veduto ciò, si gettò a' ginocchi di Gesù, dicendo: Signore, dipartiti da me, perché son uomo peccatore. 9 Poiché spavento avea preso lui e tutti quelli che eran con lui, per la presa di pesci che avean fatta; 10 e così pure Giacomo e Giovanni, figliuoli di Zebedeo, ch'eran soci di Simone. E Gesù disse a Simone: Non temere: da ora innanzi sarai pescator d'uomini. 11 Ed essi, tratte le barche a terra, lasciarono ogni cosa e lo seguirono. 12 Ed avvenne che, trovandosi egli in una di quelle città, ecco un uomo pien di lebbra, il quale, veduto Gesù e gettatosi con la faccia a terra, lo pregò dicendo: Signore, se tu vuoi, tu puoi mondarmi. 13 Ed egli, stesa la mano, lo toccò dicendo: Lo voglio, sii mondato. E in quell'istante la lebbra sparì da lui. 14 E Gesù gli comandò di non dirlo a nessuno: Ma va', gli disse, mostrati al sacerdote ed offri per la tua purificazione quel che ha prescritto Mosè; e ciò serva loro di testimonianza. 15 Però la fama di lui si spandeva sempre più; e molte turbe si adunavano per udirlo ed esser guarite delle loro infermità. 16 Ma egli si ritiravane' luoghi deserti e pregava. 17 Ed avvenne, in uno di que' giorni, ch'egli stava insegnando; ed eran quivi seduti de' Farisei e de' dottori della legge, venuti da tutte le borgate della Galilea, della Giudea e da Gerusalemme; e la potenza del Signore era con lui per compier delle guarigioni. 18 Ed ecco degli uomini che portavano sopra un letto un paralitico, e cercavano di portarlo dentro e di metterlo davanti a lui. 19 E non trovando modo d'introdurlo a motivo della calca, salirono sul tetto, e fatta un'apertura fra i tegoli, lo calaron giù col suo lettuccio, in mezzo alla gente, davanti a Gesù. 20 Ed egli, veduta la loro fede, disse: O uomo, i tuoi peccati ti sono rimessi. 21 Allora gli scribi e i Farisei cominciarono a ragionare, dicendo: Chi è costui che pronunzia bestemmie? Chi può rimettere i peccati se non Dio solo? 22 Ma Gesù, conosciuti i loro ragionamenti, prese a dir loro: Che ragionate nei vostri cuori? 23 Che cosa è più agevole dire: I tuoi peccati ti son rimessi, oppur dire: Lèvati e cammina? 24 Ora, affinché sappiate che il Figliuol dell'uomo ha sulla terra autorità di rimettere i peccati: Io tel dico (disse al paralitico), lèvati, togli il tuo lettuccio e vattene a casa tua. 25 E in quell'istante, alzatosi in presenza loro e preso il suo giaciglio, se ne andò a casa sua, glorificando Iddio. 26 E tutti furon presi da stupore e glorificavano Iddio; e pieni di spavento, dicevano: Oggi abbiamo visto cose strane. 27 E dopo queste cose, egli uscì e notò un pubblicano, di nome Levi, che sedeva al banco della gabella, e gli disse: Seguimi. 28 Ed egli, lasciata ogni cosa, si levò e si mise a seguirlo. 29 E Levi gli fece un gran convito in casa sua; e c'era gran folla di pubblicani e d'altri che erano a tavola con loro. 30 E i Farisei ed i loro scribi mormoravano contro i discepoli di Gesù, dicendo: Perché mangiate e bevete coi pubblicani e coi peccatori? 31 E Gesù rispondendo, disse loro: I sani non hanno bisogno del medico, bensì i malati. 32 Io non son venuto a chiamare i de' giusti, ma de' peccatori a ravvedimento. 33 Ed essi gli dissero: I discepoli di Giovanni digiunano spesso e fanno orazioni; così pure i discepoli de' Farisei; mentre i tuoi mangiano e bevono. 34 E Gesù disse loro: Potete voi far digiunare gli amici dello sposo, mentre lo sposo è con loro? 35 Ma verranno i giorni per questo; e quando lo sposo sarà loro tolto, allora, in que' giorni, digiuneranno. 36 Disse loro anche una parabola: Nessuno strappa un pezzo da un vestito nuovo per metterlo ad un vestito vecchio; altrimenti strappa il nuovo, e il pezzo tolto dal nuovo non adatta al vecchio. 37 E nessuno mette vin nuovo in otri vecchi; altrimenti vin nuovo rompe gli otri, il vino si spande, e gli otri vanno perduti. 38 Ma il vin nuovo va messo in otri nuovi. 39 E nessuno che abbia bevuto del vin vecchio, ne desidera del nuovo, perché dice: Il vecchio è buono.

LUKE 5

Jesus Chooses His First Disciples

(Matthew 4.18-22; Mark 1.16-20)

1  t Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, t teaching the people as they crowded around him to hear God's message. 2 Near the shore he saw two boats left there by some fishermen who had gone to wash their nets.

3 Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Simon and asked him to row it out a little way from the shore. Then Jesus sat downt in the boat to teach the crowd.

4 When Jesus had finished speaking, he told Simon, “Row the boat out into the deep water and let your nets down to catch some fish.”
5  t “Master,” Simon answered, “we have worked hard all night long and have not caught a thing. But if you tell me to, I will let the nets down.” 6 t They did this and caught so many fish that their nets began ripping apart.

7 Then they signaled for their partners in the other boat to come and help them. The men came, and together they filled the two boats so full that they both began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this happen, he knelt down in front of Jesus and said, “Lord, don't come near me! I am a sinner.” 9 Peter and everyone with him were completely surprised at all the fish they had caught.

10 His partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were surprised too.
Jesus told Simon, “Don't be afraid! From now on you will bring in people instead of fish.”

11 The men pulled their boats up on the shore. Then they left everything and went with Jesus.

Jesus Heals a Man

(Matthew 8.1-4; Mark 1.40-45)

12 Jesus came to a town where there was a man who had leprosy.t When the man saw Jesus, he knelt down to the ground in front of Jesus and begged, “Lord, you have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”
13 Jesus put his hand on him and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” At once the man's leprosy disappeared.

14 t Jesus told him, “Don't tell anyone about this, but go and show yourself to the priest. Offer a gift to the priest, just as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.”t
15 News about Jesus kept spreading. Large crowds came to listen to him teach and to be healed of their diseases.

16 But Jesus would often go to some place where he could be alone and pray.

Jesus Heals a Man //Who Could Not Walk

(Matthew 9.1-8; Mark 2.1-12)

17 One day some Pharisees and experts in the Law of Moses sat listening to Jesus teach. They had come from every village in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem.
God had given Jesus the power to heal the sick, 18 and some people came carrying a man on a mat because he could not walk. They tried to take him inside the house and put him in front of Jesus.

19 But because of the crowd, they could not get him to Jesus. So they went up on the roof, t where they removed some tiles and let the mat down in the middle of the room.

20 When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “My friend, your sins are forgiven.”

21 The Pharisees and the experts began arguing, “Jesus must think he is God! Only God can forgive sins.”
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said, “Why are you thinking this? 23 Is it easier for me to tell this man that his sins are forgiven or to tell him to get up and walk?

24 But now you will see that the Son of Man has the right to forgive sins here on earth.” Jesus then said to the man, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk home.”
25 At once the man stood up in front of everyone. He picked up his mat and went home, giving thanks to God.

26 Everyone was amazed and praised God. What they saw surprised them, and they said, “We have seen a great miracle today!”

Jesus Chooses Levi

(Matthew 9.9-13; Mark 2.13-17)

28 Levi left everything and went with Jesus.

29 In his home Levi gave a big dinner for Jesus. Many tax collectors and other guests were also there.

30  t The Pharisees and some of their teachers of the Law of Moses grumbled to Jesus' disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with these tax collectors and other sinners?”
31 Jesus answered, “Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do.

32 I didn't come to invite good people to turn to God. I came to invite sinners.”

33 Some people said to Jesus, “John's followers often pray and go without eating, t and so do the followers of the Pharisees. But your disciples never go without eating or drinking.”
34 Jesus told them, “The friends of a bridegroom don't go without eating while he is still with them.

35 But the time will come when he will be taken from them. Then they will go without eating.”

36 Jesus then told them these sayings:
No one uses a new piece of cloth to patch old clothes. The patch would shrink and make the hole even bigger.
37 No one pours new wine into old wineskins. The new wine would swell and burst the old skins.t Then the wine would be lost, and the skins would be ruined.

38 New wine must be put only into new wineskins.
39 No one wants new wine after drinking old wine. They say, “The old wine is better.”
